Opis:
The article focuses on the genre of girls’ school stories, which was developing in Russian literature in 1900–1930, before and after the dramatic shift of the state ideology. The main subjects of the study are Lidija Charskaja’s works The Notes of an Institute Girl and Ljuda Vlassovskaja (1901–1904) and a play by Aleksandra Brushtejn Blue and Pink (1936). The research demonstrates that the Russian girls’ school story of that period, influenced by this genre’s classical works, elaborated its specific language, plot elements, and system of characters. All those essential features were based on real-life experiences of boarding schools for girls of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Soviet era critics attempted to eliminate Charskaja’s books from circulation among the new post-revolutionary readership. However, as this article attempts to demonstrate, even while the ideology of the school story has changed dramatically, the structure remained in tack for many years to come. The tradition of the genre was continued despite and, perhaps, due to the ideological pressures of Soviet censorship.

Opis:
Szkic poświęcony polsko-niemieckiej aktorce i pisarce Eleonorze Kalkowskiej jest przyczynkiem do szerszej recepcji jej twórczości w Polsce. Autorka podejmuje próbę uporządkowania dotychczasowego stanu badań w Niemczech i w Polsce. Podkreślona zostaje ponadnarodowa wartość pisarstwa tworzącej po niemiecku Kalkowskiej, którego istotą pozostaje idea sprawiedliwości społecznej i obrona człowieczeństwa jednocześnie z pozycji humanistycznych, chrześcijańskich i feministycznych.
The study devoted to the forgotten Polish-German actress and writer, Eleonora Kalkowska, is a contribution to the reception of her works. The author makes an attempt to order the current state of the research in both Germany and Poland. Consequently, she depicts Kalkowska’s artistic development: from love poetry (Die Oktave, 1912), through anti-war lyrics (Der Rauch des Opfers, 1916), up to social drama of the in-between-the-wars period (Josef, Zeitungsnotitzen, 1932), of which Kalkowska is an eminent representative. Transnational quality of her works has been noticed here, whose most important idea is social justice and defense of humanity. The uniqueness of her writing is characterized by the form and manner of realizing her artistic mission, both from a humanistic, Christian and woman’s perspective.

The article sketches a portrayal of educated women in literature of the interwar period. The ways are shown in which typical experiences of women students are reflected in prose works describing the consecutive stages of scholarly career – from the beginning of one’s university studies to successful independent work. The figure of female student and scientist is shown in the novels concerned as a model example of emancipation, while the influence of a conservative concept of femininity is apparent. The model protagonist is a utopian figure as it harmoniously merges emancipative and conservative elements.

Opis:
Literary texts, and especially those that are aesthetically mediocre or even pretentious, have been an important platform for political expression in the interwar Europe. A significant number of Polish (and foreign) women writers in the 1920s and 1930s, such as Wanda Miłaszewska, Zofia Kossak, Pola Gojawiczyńska, and Halina Krahelska – to mention only a few representative names – wrote many personal and fictional narratives about female experience, regional culture, and collective identity. However, while male writers’ contribution to literary regionalism has been well documented, the contribution of female authors to the development of regional writing and regional identities has not been explored as thoroughly as it ought to be. This article proposes a new approach to analyzing regional women’s writing by drawing particularly on studies of women’s literature, comparative literature, and geopoetics. It poses a number of research questions whose aim is to spark a debate in this area.

Based on a research concerning literary works by the authors from Central and Eastern European countries living in Italy, this article explores the imaginary bonded to a vast geographical area and to a variety of social experiences connected to that area under regime or to the post-migration condition. The interviews conducted with the selected writers allow the authoress to gather elements that show the perception of the place of origin and its connection with neighboring countries, suggested by different motivations. The literary works cited in the article give testimony of lives under regimes and describe moments of transition due to political and social change or to the choice to migrate. While revealing sometimes a stereotyped view of the idea of ‘East’ in opposition to the ‘West’, these different voices, located at a spatial and temporal distance from the social realities they explore, suggest an important role of literary expression as means for contrasting the oblivion of the past and present injustices.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to literature written by women in the Kashubian language. Notably, in Kashubian literature, recent decades have witnessed a revival in women’s writing, resulting in numerous literary works. There are several reasons for this, all determined predominantly by the cultural tradition of Kashubia. The revival in the literary world of female writers and poets most certainly results from numerous complex social and cultural processes, including the growing emancipation, the need for education and opening up to the world. Women writing in Kashubian express themselves in poetry, drama and prose. The works of women writing in Kashubian can be attributed to two stages originating in the 1980s. Among the first poets and writers were Rozalia Narloch (referred to as the “Kashubian Cinderella”), Teodora Kropidłowska, writing under the pseudonym “Deotyma” and Agnieszka Browarczyk. They were followed by the novels and plays by Anna Łajming. The most prominent female authors writing in Kashubian include Maria Boszke, Krystyna Muza, Jaromira Labuda, Ida Czaja, Hanna Makurat, Wanda Kiedrowska, Ewa Warmowska, Elżbieta Bugajna, Bożena Ugowska, Lucyna Sorn, Dorota Wilczewska and Gracjana Potrykus.

Opis:
From the second half of the 20th century, the issue of women’s writing has been of considerable interest in literary studies, highlighting the need to know women as writers and as literary subjects, in order to understand female experience first-hand. This approach to written texts is based on two fundamental aspects of study: women as writers and the representation of women in the text. This has made it possible to examine how women are represented and what topics women writers prefer, for example, motherhood, a literary topos par excellence in Italian literature. Despite this, although motherhood is present in numerous works, the voices of actual mothers are largely absent: mothers and motherhood are in fact narrated from the point of view of daughters. In view of that, there are two main aims of this study: (1) to examine the possible reasons for the absence of the mother’s point of view and (2) to analyze some contemporary Italian literarature narrated by mothers themselves.

The comparison draws from the fact that both writers were considered as scandalizing by their contemporaries. The two discussed novels present transformations of the heroines, socially liberatedas a result of the Great War. The article analyses the female discovery of sensuality as a common motif of the two novels. It shows the literary images of feminine sensuality in the context of interwar vitality, aesthetic experience of human body and sexuality perceived as visual and tactile sensations.

The position of women is certainly one of the important issues of recent decades, and not only in academic research. Facing concrete forms of vulnerability all over the world (which may include lower social status, the lack of choices women have, or the distinction between genders in schools, at work, and in the public sphere) and the current escalating presence of violence against women in the media and the temptation of formulating simple remedies to these problems, contemporary research in the humanities has to become sensitive to current developments and must dare to undertake the task of shaping the culture. We have to become aware that culture products such as literature, music, or art must not only reflect reality but also influence or (re)structure social statuses. This article focuses on one medieval Dutch text, Beatrijs, and the way the central figure of the woman is portrayed in it. It presents the link between the different social positions of the protagonist Beatrijs, the norms she has to follow, and the possibilities she has to choose from at particular turning points of her life. Beatrijs clearly belongs to the canon of medieval Dutch literature, and many aspects of it have been discussed already. After the first edition was published by Jonckbloet in 1841,1 the text did not receive much attention, and it was not until the new revival of the story at the beginning of the twentieth century when its diverse features were studied. With the publication by Deschamps,2 interest in the material characteristics of the manuscript itself piqued and detailed textual study with close-reading analysis and a diplomatic edition with Latin sources presented by Duinhoven3 has raised new questions about the interpretation of the text. The most recent research was presented in a publication that is the summation of the international project Beatrijs internationaal, which focused on the circulation of the text within and outside of the Netherlands in the past and present.4 Beatrijs is also one of the most widely circulated medieval Dutch texts with translations, adaptations, and intersemiotic interpretations all over the world. It has served as the source material for opera, films, modern literature for young readers, and theatre. This is why it is important to see Beatrijs not only as a story of one girl but more as a reflection of the social relations in the middle ages and a tool to influence them. This article shall not discuss how women were generally regarded in the Middle Ages but rather present the image set by literature and more precisely by one particular Dutch text and the way social attitudes are shown in it.

This paper deals with the bodily attractiveness of heroines and heroes, as described in one of the two most important epics of India. The basis for this analysis is the love stories and episodes included in the main plot of the Vanaparvan, the third book of the Mahābhārata. The stories from this book have been taken into consideration due to their numerous occurrences, which are a sufficient ground for generalizations. Many characteristic features of their protagonists are repeated in different sub‑stories. Also, the images of female and male characters, princesses, queens and kings are presented and discussed in detail. The external beauty of such female heroines as Damayantī, Sāvitrī, Sukanyā, Suśobhanā and Sitā; as well as the attractiveness of two semi‑goddesses, called Apsarases, are described and analysed. The names of the Apsarases discussed in the context of female beauty are Urvaśī and Menakā. Besides this, the image of an unnamed courtesan is discussed, as it is the most detailed description of a female character and probably follows the ideal of female beauty as shown in the Mahābhārata. As far as the male protagonists are concerned, the images of heroes such as Nala, Bhīma, Aśvapati, Rāma and Daśaratha are taken into consideration. The examples of male attractiveness also include features of the five main heroes of the Mahābhārata: the Paṇḍava brothers.

Then it turns to feminist literary theory tracking two different periods of its reception by, and adaption to, literary criticism in post-communist academic research. The concepts of women’s generations and women’s literary canon, vital for the western tradition of gynocriticism, are closely analyzed in line with their relevance to present-day women’s literature in post-communist culture. The paper ends with a presentation of a threefold model of the prospective to speak of women’s literature imbedded in, or in counter stance to, the traditional literary canon.
