Opis:
Waged in 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs has claimed over 20,000 lives according to human rights groups. The Duterte administration’s own count is significantly lower: around 6,000. The huge discrepancy between the government’s official count and that of arguably more impartial organizations about something as concretely material as body count is symptomatic of how disinformation is central to the Duterte administration and how it can sustain the approval of the majority of the Philippine electorate. We suggest that Duterte’s populist politics generates what Boler and Davis (2018) call “affective feedback loops,” which create emotional and informational ecosystems that facilitate smooth algorithmic governance. We turn to Patron Saints of Nothing, a recently published novel by Randy Ribay about a Filipino-American who goes back to the Philippines to uncover the truth behind the death of his cousin. Jay’s journey into the “heart of darkness” as a “hyphenated” individual (Filipino-American) allows him access to locally networked subjectivities but not its affective entanglements. Throughout the novel, he encounters numerous versions of the circumstances of Jun’s demise and the truth remains elusive at the end of the novel. We argue that despite the constant distortion of fact and fiction in the novel, what remains relatively stable or “sticky” throughout the novel are the letters from Jun Reguero that Jay carries with him back to the Philippines. We suggest that these letters can potentially serve as a form of “dissensus” that challenges the constant redistribution of the sensible in the novel.

Corrective Feedback (CF)
French learners of English
Opis:
The role of corrective feedback (CF) in L2 development has been the topic of much discussion in SLA literature (see for example Sheen and Ellis 2011 for a recent overview). Researchers have focused their attention on CF provided either by language teachers or by fellow L2 learners, whereas relatively little is known about phonetic feedback offered in a non-institutional setting during peer-to-peer native/non-native interactions as is the case with tandem language learning. Tandem language exchanges represent a special learning environment, as each participant takes turns being the native and the non-native side of the dialogue. Thus, in contrast to the typical L2 learning setting, the hierarchical structure between the participants is fluid: the expert-novice power relationship evolves as the meeting progresses and the conversation switches from one language to the other. In order to see how the distinguishing characteristics of tandem learning (such as solidarity and reciprocity) shape the process of L2 phonetic development in their own specific ways, we collected an English-French Tandem Corpus as part of the SITAF project (Spécificités des Interactions verbales dans le cadre de Tandems linguistiques Anglais-Français), launched at the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 in October 2012. We gathered linguistic data – both video and audio recorded – from face-to-face conversational exchanges held by 21 pairs of undergraduate students, with each ‘tandem’ consisting of a native speaker of English and a native speaker of French. The dialogues and reading passages were recorded on two occasions separated by a 3-month interval. The present paper offers a preliminary analysis of L2 pronunciation feedback on several renditions of the same text (The North Wind and the Sun), given to the French speakers by their English tandem partners. The passage was produced by each French participant three times: (1) during the ‘monitored’ reading, which was supervised by the English-speaking partner and which led to (2) the ‘second reading’ in the course of the first recording session, and then (3) the ‘final reading’ performed during the second recording session 3 months later. Data analysis will allow us to address the following questions relating to the study of phonetic corrective feedback: What is corrected by the native-speaking partner (henceforth NS)? Segmental or prosodic errors? Phonemic or allophonic deviations? What is the corrective strategy adopted by the NS? Is it explicit correction, recast, or elicitation? What is the learner’s uptake after receiving feedback? We hope that our data brings a valuable and fairly unique contribution to SLA research, helping to establish which errors get corrected and how it may have implications for setting priorities in L2 pronunciation teaching.

Student feedback
Opis:
Sociology students in Portugal have usually been taught methodology and epistemology in a classical, scholastic way. If students are provided with practical contact early on, this can help them to better understand and apply theoretical concepts conveyed through lectures. During their last graduate year, Sociology students of the University of Minho are expected to design a full research project and to conduct exploratory research, completed by the last semester, and this includes either a residence period or a research seminar. To ensure this works well, methodology units are organised on a weekly basis, according to two types of classes: 1) theoretical and 2) theoretical-practical, with the purpose of gradually enabling students to develop the competencies they will need to graduate. Focusing on the teaching experience of qualitative methodologies, and using as an example the teaching of observation techniques, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the advantages of offering the students early contact with the “field”, and prepare them for future full-scale research. These advantages are acknowledged by students, as evidenced in their written evaluations of their field experiences. However, it is important to note that this type of learning is most fruitful when students have been previously trained in the use of the written language – namely aiming to develop their ability to describe – and social theories.

Opis:
When implementing the hierarchical structure [4][5] of the learning algorithm of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), two very important questions have to be solved. The first one is connected with the selection of the broad coordination principle. In [1], three different principles are described. They vary with regard to the degree of freedom for the first-level tasks. The second problem is connected with the coordinator structure or, in other words, the coordination algorithm. In the regulation theory, the process of finding the coordinator structure is known as the feedback principle. The simplest regulator structure (scheme) is known as the proportional regulator – “P” regulator. In the article, the regulator structure and its parameters are analysed as well as their impact on the learning process quality.

This paper reports on two ways in which success and failure can be operationalized and quantified in a non-institutional L2 learning context such as language tandem setting. We draw on the SITAF database, where we gathered 25 hours of video-recorded conversations held by 21 pairs, each consisting of a native speaker of English and a native speaker of French. The tandems performed collaborative tasks in both languages, thus giving each participant ample opportunity to be both the ‘expert’ and the ‘novice’ (learner) part of the dialogue. The tandem partners met regularly and autonomously outside of the recording sessions, and making progress in their L2 was one of their declared goals. Two possible measures of success in achieving this goal are: (1) the quality and quantity of learner uptake which followed the expert’s corrective feedback (CF) during the recorded conversations. Significant differences between the two L1 groups were observed: while 52% of the CF given by the native French speakers met with total uptake, over 52% of the English CF generated no uptake at all; (2) the participants’ own narratives of progress, as both the experts and the learners, obtained through questionnaires they filled out at the end of the program. Our study aims to contribute to the discussion on the stakes of successful L2 informal learning (with a focus on the acquisition of L2 pronunciation) by adopting a perspective which combines learners’ spoken output data and learners’ perceptions of their own language learning activity.

A novice advanced architecture of 8-bit analog to digital converter is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The structure of proposed ADC is based on the sub-ranging ADC architecture in which a 4-bit resolution flash-ADC is utilized. The proposed ADC architecture is designed by employing a comparator which is equipped with common mode current feedback and gain boosting technique (CMFD-GB) and a residue amplifier. The proposed 8 bits ADC structure can achieve the speed of 140 mega-samples per second. The proposed ADC architecture is designed at a resolution of 8 bits at 10 MHz sampling frequency. DNL and INL values of the proposed design are -0.94/1.22 and -1.19/1.19 respectively. The ADC design dissipates a power of 1.24 mW with the conversion speed of 0.98 ns. The magnitude of SFDR and SNR from the simulations at Nyquist input is 39.77 and 35.62 decibel respectively. Simulations are performed on a SPICE based tool in 90 nm CMOS technology. The comparison shows better performance for this proposed ADC design in comparison to other ADC architectures regarding speed, resolution and power consumption.

Opis:
This paper is concerned with the problem of designing a robust modified repetitive-control system with a dynamic output feedback controller for a class of strictly proper plants. Employing the continuous lifting technique, a continuous-discrete two-dimensional (2D) model is built that accurately describes the features of repetitive control. The 2D control input contains the direct sum of the effects of control and learning, which allows us to adjust control and learning preferentially. The singular-value decomposition of the output matrix and Lyapunov stability theory are used to derive an asymptotic stability condition based on a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). Two tuning parameters in the LMI manipulate the preferential adjustment of control and learning. A numerical example illustrates the tuning procedure and demonstrates the effectiveness of the method.

A two-axis gimbal system can be used for stabilizing platform equipped with observation system like cameras or different measurement units. The most important advantageous of using a gimbal stabilization is a possibility to provide not disturbed information or data from a measurement unit. This disturbance can proceed from external working conditions. The described stabilization algorithm of a gimbal system bases on a regulator with a feedback loop. Steering parameters are calculated from quaternion transformation angular velocities received from gyroscopes. This data are fed into the input of Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller. Their input signal is compared with earned value in the feedback loop. The paper presents the way of increasing the position’s accuracy by getting it in the feedback loop. The data fusion from a positioning sensor and a gyroscope results in much better accuracy of stabilization.

This paper presents an (infinite-dimensional) geometric framework for control systems, based on infinite jet bundles, where a system is represented by a single vector field and dynamic equivalence (to be precise: equivalence by endogenous dynamic feedback) is conjugation by diffeomorphisms. These diffeomorphisms are very much related to Lie-Bäcklund transformations. It is proved in this framework that dynamic equivalence of single-input systems is the same as static equivalence.

Nowadays, multiclassifier systems (MCSs) are being widely applied in various machine learning problems and in many different domains. Over the last two decades, a variety of ensemble systems have been developed, but there is still room for improvement. This paper focuses on developing competence and interclass cross-competence measures which can be applied as a method for classifiers combination. The cross-competence measure allows an ensemble to harness pieces of information obtained from incompetent classifiers instead of removing them from the ensemble. The cross-competence measure originally determined on the basis of a validation set (static mode) can be further easily updated using additional feedback information on correct/incorrect classification during the recognition process (dynamic mode). The analysis of computational and storage complexity of the proposed method is presented. The performance of the MCS with the proposed cross-competence function was experimentally compared against five reference MCSs and one reference MCS for static and dynamic modes, respectively. Results for the static mode show that the proposed technique is comparable with the reference methods in terms of classification accuracy. For the dynamic mode, the system developed achieves the highest classification accuracy, demonstrating the potential of the MCS for practical applications when feedback information is available.

Assessment in translator education can sometimes be regarded as a necessary evil, either by trainees who tend to dislike evaluations of their competence and performance or by trainers who are obliged to measure and judge these elusive qualities. This authoritative role imposed on the translation teacher by various institutional regulations interferes with the image of the teacher as a guide postulated by the idea of empowerment (Kiraly 2000, 2005), since it might affect the distribution of power and control in the translation classroom. Grades assigned to translation assessment can hardly reflect the actual quality of the trainee translator’s work, let alone help them improve the necessary skills that translation competence entails. However, when accompanied by constructive feedback, the necessary evil cannot only be justified but also excused or even fostered. The author advocates transforming training-based assessment into assessment-based training. In as much as the translation teacher organises, controls and evaluates the students’ performance, a premise of equal importance is that assessment can also have a measurable effect on student competence development. As Fowler (2007: 254) claims, “the competence development in translators mainly derives from formative assessment”. With this presupposition in mind, the article will introduce the basic tenets of formative assessment with a close look given to its features and principles that should be observed with the aim of giving objective and effective feedback. Then, the roles of the trainer and the trainee will be discussed in relation to the distribution of power and control in the translation classroom and the position of the evaluator and the evaluee. The article will give an example of instrument that the evaluee needs in order to become the evaluator and, finally, it will demonstrate a methodology for formative assessment based on a few formative feedback techniques.

Usage of certain values for feedback and delay parameters allows simulating the heart action when an accessory conducting pathway is present (Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome).
