Opis:
In order to establish a condition monitoring system to detect wear of the mechanical components of feed drives with ball screws a measuring and data evaluation method has been established. In order to keep the costs down, boundary condition is to use the machines own functionalities only (On Board Diagnosis). At present, most of wear detecting methods use vibration analysis. Here, a signal analysis method is presented that may well complement established methods of vibration analysis. The publication presents a method to exploit positioning data to detect wear of a ball screw drive exemplarily that is run under real conditions. The presented method is partially derived from wear detection methods of roller bearings and may also be adapted for other parts such as linear guides.

The paper deals with the influence of linear feed drive controller setting of a CNC turning lathe on the stability of machining. A coupled simulation model of feed drive control and ball screw drive mechanics with a transmission belt was created and validated by the feed drive diagnostic measurements. The influence of drive control on the overall dynamic compliance at the TCP and the limits of stable depth of cut was examined. Impact of the feed drive actual kinematics configuration on the stability limits was studied as well.

Opis:
Machine tools’ feed dynamics are usually limited in order to reduce excitation of machine structure oscillations. Consequently, the potential increase in productivity provided by direct drives, e.g. linear motors, cannot be exploited. The novel approach of the Kinematically Coupled Force Compensation (KCFC) applies a redundant axis configuration combined with the principle of force compensation and thus achieves an increase in feed dynamics while drive reaction forces cancel out each other in the machine base. In this paper, the principle of KCFC is introduced briefly. Subsequently, the basics for the realisation of a highly dynamic KCFC motion system with planar motion are derived and discussed. In order to achieve highest acceleration (> 100 m/s2) and jerk (> 100000 m/s3), a mechatronic system with specially designed components for the mechanical, electrical and control system is required. Thus, the design approach presented in this paper applies lightweight slides, a decoupled guide frame and voice coil motors operated at high frequencies for the pulse width modulation and control loops.

This article describes the design and construction of a feed drive load measuring system based on industrial strain gauges installed in the machine tool structure. The system was calibrated and dynamically tested in the range of 15 kN in real machining conditions. The tests showed that the system installed on a machine tool works correctly and its error amounts to about 5% of the measured range. Thanks to this measuring system the accuracy of the machine tool in machining conditions can be increased through the active compensation of the axial error caused by displacements. Moreover, the system can prevent tool breakage and increase machining efficiency.

This paper deals with the precision modelling of the ball screw unit’s thermal behaviour in the turning centre and its impact on the tool head positioning error. The error components along controllable axes X and Z are described in detail using an FE model integrating the changes in thermal and force loads and deformations occurring during the motion of the nut as a heat source. The impact of the nut work cycle on the thermal deformations of the ball screw and the displacements of the slideways and the screw points along both the axes and on carriage positioning precision is demonstrated.

Opis:
Gantry stages, which consist of two parallel acting servo drives, are commonly used in machine tools. One drawback of this concept is the crosstalk between both drives due to the structural coupling that can cause stability issues and therefore limits the bandwidth of the position control. This paper deals with the development of compliant joints to solve the coupling between the drives. When compared to solutions containing bearings, the advantages of such flexible elements are low friction and the absence of backlash. To adjust the properties of the joints, packages of spring-steel-sheets are used as compliant links. One design aspect of the flexible joints is a low stiffness relating to the rotation around one specific axis, but a high stiffness relating to the other degrees of freedom. With this method, the dynamic behaviour of the gantry stage is modified and the bandwidth of the controllers can be increased. Additionally, by releasing the mechanical coupling of the drives, the reaction forces the actuators have to provide can be reduced. Both systems with flexible and with rigid connecting elements, are analysed by measured frequency response functions.

This paper briefly describes the current requirements which machine tool ball screws must meet and indicates the need for the modelling and numerical simulation of the latter. The structure of a holistic ball screw model and ways of modelling the properties of the ball screw in a turning centre, including the moving heat sources on the guides and in the screw-nut joint, are presented. The results of computing the heating up and displacements of a preloaded screw and the screw without preload are reported. The modelled changes in motion resistance and in displacements are shown to be in agreement with the results of measuring the current drawn by the drive’s motor. It is also shown that the models represent well the real physical phenomena occurring in the ball screw during the execution of repeatable work cycles by the drive.

Opis:
The vibration of a machine tool is mainly caused by the dynamic acceleration of a motion axis and by the forces that act on it. All the disturbance forces are transmitted to the machine tool frame through the drive (motor) and its regulation loop and they excite its vibrations. Thus the achievable dynamics and machining quality is negatively influenced. There are several possibilities how to suppress the excited vibrations including the recently introduced "motor on motor" technique which is based on the serial connection of two linear motors. This paper presents new simulation results performed on the simulation model of a real machine tool. The maximal achievable tuning of the regulation loop parameters of the motion axis equipped with the "motor on motor" technique was confronted with the conventional feed drive setting. The "motor on motor" feed drive properties were also tested in the virtual machining operation mode where the real measured cutting force was used. The sensitivity analysis of the reaction force and the middle mass movement of the "motor on motor" feed drive solution to the predicted cutting force introduced to the feed drive control has been investigated. The middle mass is represented by the shared part of both linear motors which absorbs the high frequency part of the reaction force by its movement.

This article discusses the most important issues regarding the implementation of digital algorithms for control and drive technology in industrial machines, especially in open mining machines. The article presents the results of tests in which the algorithm and drive control parameter settings were not selected appropriately for voltage-fed induction motors, and where the control speed was not verified by any of the available motoring or simulation methods. We then show how the results can be improved using field-oriented control algorithms and deep parameters analysis for sensorless field-oriented performance.

When harvesting plant mass by forage harvesters for haylage, maize of high ripeness for silage, etc., one of the tasks is to increase the efficiency of the use of vehicles by increasing the quantity of transported growing mass, which is achievable with proper compaction and uniform distribution of the vehicle bunker. This is facilitated by the use of an active visor with a return movement located on the silo line of the forage harvester. The results of theoretical studies on optimization of operation modes and improving the design of active visor are presented. The options for a smooth and continuous control of the working stroke of the active visor located on the silo line of forage harvester are developed. When harvesting vegetable mass with forage harvesters for haylage, corn of wax ripeness for silage, etc.one of the tasks is to increase the efficiency of using vehicles by increasing the amount of transported plant mass, which is achievable if it is properly compacted and evenly distributed over the vehicle body. This is facilitated by the use of an active visor, i.e. a visor with a return movement on the silo of the forage harvester. Theoretical studies on optimizing operating modes and improving the design of the active visor on the silo of the forage harvester were carried out in accordance with the provisions of classical mechanics. Four basic schemes for controlling the working stroke of the visor are structurally justified. The use of the proposed control concepts and active visor designs allows you to control the process of uniform and homogeneous loading of vehicles when harvesting grasses for silage by forage harvesters.
