Opis:
In the present study, we used next-generation sequencing to investigate the impacts of two commercially available prescription diet regimens on the fecal microbiomes of eleven client-owned healthy pet dogs. We tested an anallergenic diet on 6 dogs and a low-fat diet on 5 dogs. Before starting the study, each dog was fed a different commercial diet over 5 weeks. After collecting pre-diet fecal samples, the anallergenic or low-fat diet was administered for 5 weeks. We then collected fecal samples and compared the pre- and post-diet fecal microbiomes. In the dogs on the anallergenic diet, we found significantly decreased proportions of Bacteroides, Ruminococcaceae, and Fusobacteriaceae, belonging to the phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Fusobacteria, respectively. The proportion of the genus Streptococcus belonging to the phylum Firmicutes was significantly increased upon administering the anallergenic diet. In the dogs on the low-fat diet, although the phyla Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes tended to increase (p=0.116) and decrease (p=0.147) relative to the pre-diet levels, respectively, there were no significant differences in the proportions of any phylum between the pre- and post-diet fecal microbiomes. The anallergenic diet induced a significantly lower diversity index value than that found in the pre-diet period. Principal coordinate analysis based on unweighted UniFrac distance matrices revealed separation between the pre- and post-diet microbiomes in the dogs on the anallergenic diet. These results suggest that, even in pet dogs kept indoors in different living environments, unification of the diet induces apparent changes in the fecal microbiome.

Opis:
Purpose:It is expected that H. pylori residing outside the stomach influences the results of the stool test. The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of H. pylori antigens in dental plaque and feces of the patients with H. pylori infected and non-infected stomachs.Materials and methods: The study was conducted in 188 dentate patients, 107 with H. pylori infected and 81 non-infected stomachs. Stomach infection with H. pylori was evaluated with CLO test, histology and culture. The stomach was classified as infected if at least two of three tests (CLO test, culture, histology) were positive and as non-infected if all three tests were negative. Dental plaque was taken only from the natural teeth. On the day of the gastroscopic examination or on the next two days a stool sample was collected for H. pylori antigens testing. H. pylori antigens in dental plaque and feces were determined by immunological method. Results:In 60.8% of subjects with an infected stomach, H. pylori antigens were present both in the dental plaque and feces, in 37.4% in feces only, in 0.9% only in the dental plaque, and in 0.9% neither in the dental plaque nor feces. In 46.9% of subjects with a non-infected stomach, H. pylori antigens were found neither in the dental plaque nor feces, in 24.7% both in the dental plaque and feces, in 23.5% only in the dental plaque, and in 4,9% only in feces. Conclusions: There is a weak association between the occurrence of H. pylori antigens in feces and the dental plaque, and also between the occurrence of the antigens in the dental plaque and stomach infection.

Opis:
The Upper Cretaceous turbidite sandstones of the Godula Beds at Międzybrodzie Bialskie, Outer Western Carpathians, Poland, yielded a specimen here interpreted as a coprolite due to its elongated morphology and a high content of fragmented inoceramid shells. The coprolite was produced by a durophagous carnivore, which was most likely a teleost fish, or possibly a reptile. Coprolites are therefore confirmed to have a potential utility as aggregations of body fossils in macrofossil-poor sedimentary rocks, exemplified by the Godula Beds.

Opis:
In this study total of 266 fecal samples from 242 animals belonging to 113 species kept in the Poznan Zoological Garden were examined for Giardia. The cysts of Giardia were found only in five samples of feces collected from a giant toad (Bufo marinus), tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) and three individuals of cactus mouse (Peromyscus eremicus). Fragments of β-giardin (bg), triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) genes were successfully amplified only from the Giardia isolate obtained from the tamandua. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed that the Giardia isolate from the tamandua belonged to the B assemblage and showed homologies of 99% to 100% at bg, gdh and tpi loci of the same markers of parasites isolated from humans and animals in various parts of the world. This is the first molecular characterization of G. duodenalis from tamandua.

Opis:
Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. is a common parasitic disease in homing pigeons. The study objective was to evaluate the incidence of coccidia infections in pigeon lofts during racing season. The intensity of coccidiosis was determined by floatation analyses of faeces samples collected from three pigeon groups performed in three replications (before the racing season, in mid-season and after the end of racing season). The presence of coccidia oocysts was determined in all faeces samples in each replication. At the end of the racing season, the average oocyst counts in faeces samples collected from pigeons that were flown for the first time increased by around 10% in relation to oocysts counts determined before the race. In flown pigeons (aged 2–4 years) a 2.5–9.9% drop was noted in oocysts counts subject to flock, whereas an increase of 15.7–17.3% was reported in parent flocks (unflown pigeons). The results of the experiment indicate that coccidia infections are a common problem in homing pigeons during racing season, which affects racing results and contributes to bird loss.
