    The aim of the paper is to evaluate alternative food networks (farmers’ markets and community gardens) in Slovak towns in order to determine the views of town self-governing authorities. Data was collected through a questionnaire sent to representatives of towns. The results have shown that only 39% of towns regularly organise farmers’ markets but, overall, 52% of towns support or plan to support their organisation. There are a total of 40 community gardens in 17 towns, mainly in the west of Slovakia. The paper discusses the ways in which Slovak towns support alternative food networks.

    The article investigates food fears in the context of the everyday food practices of customers of farmers’ markets in Małopolska Voivodeship, Poland. The qualitative analysis of 15 individual in-depth interviews mostly concerns topics of negative evaluation and narratives justifying the exclusion of specific products, food practices and institutions of the food chain. In particular, the study focuses on ways of defining food fears, such as chemicals in food, processed food, suspicious appearance and freshness of products and concerns associated with the place of purchase. An in-depth analysis of these topics reveals broader criticism of the food system within the narratives of the research subjects. This concerns redefinitions of relations between economic order and social institutions, removing particular cultural meaning from it, fragmentation and distancing of the production process from consumption, a lack of transparency in the food chain, and the associated ignorance. The diagnosis resulting from the interviews is expressed as food fears: it has ramifications connected to the engagement and practices of avoidance or minimisation of food threats and strategies of resistance. The analysis employs Mary Douglas’s structuralist theory of defining through negation and Peter Jackson’s food anxieties theory, as well as concepts of ignorance, distrust and social embeddedness of economic practices.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza sposobu definiowana żywności naturalnej przez klientów targów świeżej żywności. Postawione w nim tezy opierają się na piętnastu indywidualnych wywiadach pogłębionych, przeprowadzonych z klientami targów w Krakowie i mniejszych miejscowościach Małopolski. W trakcie analizy zastosowane zostało podejście relacyjne i założenia teorii Aktora Sieci. Perspektywa ta pozwala uchwycić specyfikę społecznej kategorii naturalności jedzenia. Żywność jest tu rozumiana jako wytwór czynników ludzkich i pozaludzkich, socjonatura, efekt koprodukcji. Artykuł rozwija również wątek związany z kryteriami i legitymizacją wyborów konsumpcyjnych w obszarze żywności oraz znaczeniem kompetencji i kapitału społecznego podczas zakupów. Ukazany jest w nim związek kategorii naturalności z kategoriami zaufania, bezpieczeństwa, czystości, brudu i „chemii”. W interpretacji uwzględniony został kontekst społeczno-gospodarczy, między innymi osobiste doświadczenie produkcji żywności czy sceptycyzm wobec marek ekologicznych.
    The objective of the article is to analyse the way in which customers of fresh food markets define natural food. The arguments made are based on 15 individual in-depth interviews conducted with customers of markets in Krakow and smaller towns in the Małopolska region. A relational approach and the premises of Actor-Network Theory were applied during the analysis, permitting the specific nature of the social category of naturalness of food to be identified. Food here is understood as a product of human and non-human factors, socionature, and the effect of coproduction. The article also develops the theme of the criteria and legitimation of consumer choices in the area of food and the importance of competences and social capital during shopping. It illustrates the link between the category of naturalness and those of trust, safety, cleanness, dirtiness and “chemicals”. Taken into account in the interpretation was the socio-economic context, including personal experience of food production and scepticism towards “eco” brands.

    Opis:
    Local food systems (LFS) is not a legal term, although it is used in EU documents, and legal instruments supporting their development can be indicated in EU, and national legal orders. Based on the analysis and comparison of these instruments, extracted from Italian, French, Polish, American, and EU legislation, this study aims to formulate proposals for possible and beneficial solutions to be introduced into national and EU legislation, aimed at supporting LFS. The proposal includes the introduction at the EU level, along with the local food labelling system, of the LFS definition supporting small farmers who run agricultural production with the use of environmentally friendly, sustainable methods. In the field of food law, it is necessary to articulate the LFS requirements more clearly so that they are better understood by farmers. In national legislation, the instruments to be implemented involve the possibility for the farmer to carry out the activity of processing and selling his products directly to consumers and local retailers as part of his privileged agricultural status, at the same time obliging municipalities to create farmers’ markets, and supporting agriculture in the urban and peri-urban areas. Other necessary instruments include the requirement to offer local products in gastronomy by public institutions, hotels, restaurants and agritourism, and implementation of appropriate solutions in the public procurement law encouraging local food supplies.

    Smallholder farmers face multiple constraints in accessing input markets. This study seeks to understand the dynamics that influence input markets in northern Ghana and the opportunities that exist for smallholder farmers to increase their productivity and welfare. Using a random sample of 448 households, the study applied the probit and non-parametric methods in identifying the factors that influence farmers’ access to input markets and the key constraints faced by them. The results show that access to extension services, access to finance, distance to the nearest input market, and input source are significant factors that would be likely to influence farmers’ access to input markets. Lack of finance, poor road network, and low prices of output are the main critically ranked constraints limiting farmers’ access to input markets. Policy initiatives should be geared toward strengthening extension service delivery, farmer education on inputs, improving feeder roads, and encouraging private sector participation in input markets. Available opportunities to leverage on and improve farmers’ access to input markets include the governments’ input subsidy programmes, existing large-scale agricultural projects, private agricultural companies with contract farming models, and extensive network of input dealers and aggregators in the communities. These findings are relevant for farmers, input dealers and policy makers working to improve farmers’ access to input markets.
