The study evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention for families raising children with autism aimed to improve the family’s quality of life, strengthen its capacity, and expand rights and opportunities. The experimental intervention was implemented at the Educational and Rehabilitation Center for Children with Autism “Trust” (Lviv, Ukraine). It had one experimental group (30 people) and two control groups (60 people). The effectiveness and duration of the intervention effects were assessed using a before/after study design with the same questionnaire. Findings from the survey evidence the effectiveness of the intervention, in particular, for expanding the family’s capabilities, its capacity, improving relationships in family subsystems, increasing parental competence, and improving well-being. Limitations of the intervention are discussed.

Skala Praktyki Familiocentrycznej
Opis:
The article is a part of the evaluation research and evidence-based practice and theory. Changes taking place in public policies in the social area require scientific evaluation. Unfortunately, the right tools are often missing, especially when system users are respondents. Filling this gap, the authors selected and then adapted the tool to assess the quality of relationships between professionals and families who use the support services – Family-Centered Practice Scale created by Carl J. Dunst, Carol M. Trivette and Deborah W. Hamby from the Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute (USA). The aim of the article was, therefore, a cultural adaptation of the Polish version of the questionnaire and validation of its psychometric properties. The scale consists of two dimensions (relational and participative) and four subscales. In the process of adjusting the scale to conditions in Poland, language adaptation, cultural adaptation, psychometric validation and scale normalization were made. The obtained results indicate high accuracy and reliability of the questionnaire, which means that the presented scale can be used to determine the quality of relations between employees of aid institutions and families.

Eugenics as a cultural and historical context for social work with the familyThe social discourse on the use of knowledge in the field of genetic research involving both supporters as well as opponents. First, pointing to the medical aspects, emphasize new possibilities for prevention and treatment of diseases. Others warn against the temptation associated with the manipulation of human nature through sex selection, genetic features children or patching or muscles. As stated Marek Drwięga the problem (and the related moral dilemmas) occurs when - instead of the treatment of diseases - people use gene therapy to "improve their physical and mental faculties" to the consequences "as a unit better to" find themselves "above norm ". The variety of positions and the lack of clarity in the expression of individual opinion partly due to the fact that technological progress is much faster than moral reflection. This leads - according to Michael Sandel - a situation in which people express their concern about reaching into the language of autonomy, justice and individual rights. Unfortunately, this "moral" vision of the world does not bring relief to people and does not release them from anxiety, as they continue to answer the fundamental questions concerning, inter alia, the design of children or human cloning remain open. In the context of genetic engineering and biotechnology is increasingly appearing concept of eugenics - invented in the nineteenth century by Francis Galton and meaning "well-born" - which is the "gate" to the in-vitro procedure. In today's world, where thanks to advanced technologies dominate pleasure, convenience and comfort, eugenics may be manipulating the eternal laws of nature in order to "breed a man without any dysfunction and deficits, or to bring into being an artificial being, human-like in appearance only, and characterized by excellent physical and mental efficiency." The purpose of our article is, therefore, a reflection on the risks associated with the formation of new sources of inequality and identity wounds, which is particularly important in the field of contemporary social work with the family.

The aim of the article is to review the applicable normative acts related to the divorce of parents from the point of view of risk and the opportunities they create for the situation of the child and the family. The authors draw attention to the responsibility of social workers and family assistants in the process of supporting families in this crisis. The increasing number of divorces in Poland obliges researchers to undertake scientific discussions and conduct reliable scientific research, the results of which will also be changes in the practical approach of professionals working with families. The first part of the article focuses on the negative consequences of the development of children who are witnesses and victims of a family crisis and the relationship between children and parents. The authors emphasise the essence of tasks undertaken in social work addressed to the whole family experiencing a crisis caused by the breakdown of the parents’ marriage. In the last part of the article, the authors take up a polemic about supervision in social work, as an example of good practice in developing the competence of family assistants and social workers in their professional work.

Opis:
In the last few decades, the traditional concept of family has weakened while the development of numerous new constellations has gained a lot of attention. Convention sees family as a nuclear social formation, where heterosexual parents raise their children well. This view attests to the potential for healthy functioning in a variety of family arrangements, and to the stability of these social environments. In the turmoil of our rapidly changing world, the value of system orientation is changing and questions are being raised over what is an ordinary landscape of family life, its constellations and optimal functioning. This article raises family-relevant issues and discusses social pedagogy in family social work, particularly related to social care in Sweden intended for socially vulnerable populations such as the elderly, members of minority ethnic groups, and persons with disabilities suffering from discrimination and social exclusion. It is concluded that – in these populations – the family constellation, be it traditional or modern, is not really the issue, since public social care service constructions have mostly replaced traditional caring relations within families with leveling institutional structures. The social pedagogy in family social work professional practice is conducted using socio-ecological approaches for assessment, treatment and service delivery, for the improvement of individual wellbeing referred to as the individual, social and sociopolitical life-world context.

The purpose of the article is to consider a unit and family experience in confrontation with an oncology disease, showing a high degree of complexity and psych-social functioning marked with a disease. The knowledge on physical, social, emotional, existential-spiritual consequences of the disease is the basis for the ability to assess, to which degree the disturbances affect the well-being of the family and his family. However it is one of the prerequisites which encourages for deepening theoretical bases for the actions for undertaking practical consid-erations with reference to the shape of the aid offer which should be available within the support system for the patients and their families in oncological disease within social work. Among the activities concerning executing care of the patients, being recommended in the oncological tasks of the social workers is the need to accompany the units and the family faced with the disease in obtaining the possibility to function in social roles as most as possible: marital/partner, family, in professional roles. These oncological social workers undertake effective interventions allowing for overcoming the consequences of the crisis caused by the disease and strengthening the resources in the interpersonal relations and the environment of the patient. The professional work oriented to strengthening the families of the oncologically sick persons consti-tutes a special area which may extend the professional identity of the social worker with the activity in the field which is somehow a statutory obligation of the social work, but its use in practice is not a common phenomenon.

A family as the oldest and the most widespread form of the collective life in the world is close to every intelligent and acting pro-socially human being. It is the basis of existence of nations and societies. The family is one of the main socializing institutions in which children learn and internalize gradually basic values and behaviour rules preparing to fulfil important social roles. The family is the place of conveying cultural heritage, and its influence does not stop even after reaching maturity. That is why proper functioning of every family is so important. There are distinguished three following variants of socialization which favour pathologisation of attitudes and components of personality: -“disturbed socialisation”- it is a result of applying inappropriate educational methods, pedagogical negligence, emotional rejection of the child in his early developmental stages, -“demoralisation”- it consists in abandonment of traditional values and insufficiently strong assimilating new values or also rejection of all values, -“subcultural socialisation”- it takes place within the limits outlined by the narrow social group and having subcultural character (e.g. in the family of thieves). In the consequence socialization leads to a conflict of an individual with the wider social community because of the content of norms and patterns assimilated within the given subculture.

With its specific way of functioning and network of interweaving interactions of various character and emotional intensity, the family is an environment where the process of a child’s socialization takes place, social personality develops and patterns of social roles are acquired. A family that malfunctions can trigger deviation mechanisms, thus considerably contributing to a child’s social maladjustment. Due to that, in case the criteria described by law are met, it is necessary to use specific assistance measures and interfere in a family’s autonomy, limit its parental authority and support it in fulfilling educational and socialization functions. Appointing a family assistant is one of the measures of limiting parental authority aimed at helping a family.

Opis:
The subject of my reflection is family assistantship — a new form of family support, implemented in Poland as part of grassroots initiatives of non-governmental organizations and social assistance organizational units [JOPS], in the period preceding the adoption of the Act on family support and foster care system (act) . The appointment of a new professional role, the family assistant, in the social assistance system, or more broadly — in the context of care and assistance - was a real challenge to the current practices supporting the family in Poland: tasks, well-established forms of support, as well as the expectations and interests of helpers' professional environments, administration, local authority and other groups. The purpose of the sociological analysis of the processes of conceptualizing and implementing family assistantship in the social assistance system is to justify the thesis that family assistantship in the years 1990–2011 can be seen as a normative innovation (adaptive strategy) in social assistance and social work, which was a consequence of the revolt against the appearance of goals of social assistance and social work, and a response to the expectation of effective action, directed from various sides to social assistance, including from the professional environment of social workers, more and more active in the educational sphere. Also social policy, since the 1990s interested in the issue of the effectiveness of social assistance and social activity, has become an “external” source of inspiration for the institutional change introduced, which was the work of the (social) family assistant and its organizational model. In the presented text I am looking for answers to two questions: 1) what are the characteristic features of family assistantship as normative innovation? 2) what was the social order destabilisation in the years 1990–2011, incurred by including family assistantship in routine practices in social assistance centres? In preparing this study, I used my own research, observation and professional experience, as well as research carried out by other authors. In addition to the main goal, this article also pursues a minor goal. It is an attempt to synthesize dispersed empirical material on the subject of family assistantship, as well as the results of research relating to the processes of implementing institutional change, in an important context of care and assistance that is underrated in sociological reflection.

Objectives The aim of the study is to describe both professional and social activities of patients after heart transplant. Material and Methods Ninety-five heart transplant patients treated at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze were surveyed, comprising 29 women (30.5%) and 66 men (69.5%). The average age of respondents was 54.3 years old (standard deviation (SD) = 15 years); the average period that had elapsed since the heart transplant was 7.1 years (SD = 4 years). We designed a questionnaire as a tool for collecting information from patients. Results Twenty-five percent of patients worked at the time of completion of the questionnaire. Eighty percent of those patients were working before and after the transplant, 20% – only after transplantation (p < 0.05). A different job position at a new workplace had 47.8% of patients, 34.8% of them had the same job position at the same work place as they had had before, 63.4% of the heart transplant respondents were pensioners. Eighty-two percent of patients had a certificate with a designated degree of disability – among them: 69% had a certificate for a significant degree of disability, 22% – for a moderate degree of disability. Among those surveyed, 52.5% said that their financial situation had not changed whereas 34.5% of those surveyed reported a change for the worse. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported changes in family relationships. Seventy-seven percent reported that they received help from family members, as compared with 19% who did not. Conclusions Only 25.3% of the patients treated at the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases after heart transplant are employed and it is one of the lowest employment rates in this category of patients in Europe. One third of working patients have the same work place as they had before their operation. Heart transplant is a cause of changes in family relationships. Most often family bonds are strengthened but sometimes family members become nervous, impatient and unwilling to talk about the transplant.

Opis:
This paper explores the issues of current achievements in the field of the constructivist social work with the family, as well as presents a new perspective on the use of constructivist thought in this area. The constructivist approach was particularly developed in the 1970s. Still, it remains a concept that strongly influences the process of helping the family. Numerous constructivist-oriented methods of working with the family were developed in Europe and the United States; they also inspired Polish social work. The solution-centered approach is the most widespread approach to the constructivist school of thought in Poland. In addition, among a wide range of these concepts we can distinguish: constructive social work by Nigel Parton and Patrick O'Byrne, strengths-based social work by Ann Weick, Charles Rapp, Patrick W. Sullivan, Walter Kisthardt, Dennis Saleebey, the concept of positive practice by Gary Clapton and strengths-based work models (FGC, VIT). Researchers of social work less frequently refer to positions that fall within the current of systemic (operational) constructivism by Niklas Luhmann. The analysis undertaken in the article aims to show the ways of (re) defining the helping process, as well as the role of partners involved in this process in the theories of Heinz von Foerster and Niklas Luhmann.

Combining work and family life is becoming a challenge today. Preparation for fulfilling social roles, including professional and family roles, is not only theoretical. The dimension of everyday combining of these two areas becomes particularly important today. The aim of this article is to present the profile of a social worker in terms of combining the professional and family role, especially in terms of the impact of work on the fulfillment of the family role. It also examined the level of job satisfaction, the level of stress experienced and whether the conditions of work organization have an impact on the family functioning of social workers. Also taken into consideration was how the experience of working with social welfare clients translates into social workers' own family functioning. As the presented research shows social workers have a reference from their professional work, providing support and assistance to families with multiple problems, on the functioning of their own family. However, it should be pointed out that social workers require a number of supportive interventions to maintain high professional and social condition which will translate into maintaining a satisfactory level of family life.

As a result, new and innovative solutions appear in the social welfare system. However, the analysis of public policies and programs shows that many good ideas are not implemented in the daily work of employees who directly support clients. There is a resistance on their part to novelty and their openness to the implementation of new concepts is limited. The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of openness to change. The study was conducted on a group of 186 social welfare workers (132 social workers and 54 family assistants). Two research categories were adopted: declared and actual openness to change. The results of the study showed that social assistance workers declare a high level of openness to change, but their measured level of real openness is actually low. Although employees declare great support for new solutions, they do, in fact, have very low tolerance for uncertainty and the ability to take risks, which is inherent in the implementation of innovations. Thus, a gap arises between the declared and actual value. This discovery is crucial for the successful implementation of innovations and may be one of the more important obstacles to its realization. It is necessary to change the current approach and broaden the activities preparing for implementation of new solutions so that the actual readiness to change of employees is at a sufficient level.
