Opis:
The adult under the pressure of demands to function in two life domains: work and family There is a growing number of men and women engaged in work and family roles. This article describes linkages between the work-family interface and individual, family and work outcomes: life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, individual psychologicall well-being, job stress. Recent studies on the work-family interface have focused on the scarcity perspective, which posits that engaging in multiple roles results in interrole conflict when participation in one role is made more difficult by virtue of participation in the other role. Other studies support the facilitation or enhancement hypothesis which suggests, that participation in one role is made better or easier by virtue of participation in the other role. The aim of this research is to present a research project studying the work-family questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) assessing work-family conflict, work-family facilitation, family-work conflict, family-work facilitation:to analyze both the conflict and facilitation dimensions and both directions of influence: work to family and family to work in dual-earner couples,to examine the relation of conflict and facilitation to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction and other indicators of mental health. The subjects in this research are 80 married couples living in dual-earner families in Poland, who have at least one child under 12.Measures used in this study:Work-Family Fit Questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) in Polish version adopted by Lachowska (2005),Job characteristics assessed through a questionnaire developed by Dudek at al. (1999),General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg, 1978),Marital Satisfaction Scale (Olson, Fowers, 1993),Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener at al., 1993).

The aim of this article is to describe the notion of telework and show the most popular aspects of telecommuting. Detailed review of the literature points out that there is no one, widely accepted definition of telework. Thus, for the purpose of this article, telecommuting is defined as “Every sort of money-gained activity, caused by external motivation of the individual and/or induced by the organization, no matter what is the extent of time spent on teleworking. What is very important is the fact that teleworking is connected with fulfilling the obligations in a flexible way, outside the conventional workplace, with the use of available telecommunications or computer-based technology to transport it’s effects”. Further investigation of the literature shows that 3 aspects are being the most popular among telework researchers: 1) demographic and psychological characteristic of telecommuting individuals, 2) causes of teleworking, 3) outcomes of teleworking, such as: increased productivity, organizational loyalty, satisfaction and high morale, decreased level of stress and positive work-life balance. Majority of the surveys have got plenty of methodological limitations, thus the results are not to be generalized on wider population. Moreover, obtained data varies in different studies, so that telework with all it’s aspects needs further investigation. At the end of the article there are proposed new directions for the future research.

Artykuł przedstawia polską adaptację skali do pomiaru konfliktu Praca-Dom (WFC) i Dom-Praca (FWC) autorstwa Dawn Carlson i współpracowników (2000).

Opis:
The present-day media and women's magazines in particular, offer articles on different aspects of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. They present the relationship problems that arise between the mother, her married son and her daughter-in-law as well as the mother-in-law's unacceptable behaviour, her taking part in running the household and participation in bringing up the grandchildren. The magazines also include advice, both for the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law, which focuses on the positive aspects of their mutual relations. Analysing the articles on contemporary mothers-in-law, it can be seen that the mother-in-law's image they produce remains in keeping with commonplace stereotypes. The older woman's faults are often exaggerated; her values, beliefs and her chosen style of living are disregarded. A responsibility for the problems young married couples experience is attributed to her. The editors of women's magazines, in an effort to bring about a modification of the stereotype, show how to change and improve daughter-in-law and mother-in-law relationships.

Family is an institution where the primary point of reference is the manner or pattern of behavior. It is also a continuous process of creation and perpetuation of patterns of behavior are responsible for the implementation of a way of life of individuals. One of the frequent conflicts of classification is the division because of their form, rational or irrational conflicts, antagonistic – non-antagonistic, explicit – implicit, organized – unorganized. The conflict may relate to the values that are common to the parties, or different. From the perspective of the family, the most important is the role of conflict of interest, although it added that this is not the only motive of disputes. Due to the effect that the emergence and development of the conflict has on the functioning of the family, there are two types: constructive and destructive conflict. It should be strongly emphasized that there is no such family in which there is no conflict. Of all the actions taken to reduce the amount of conflict and limit the negative effects of the most important is to educate parents about their own parental role. Knowing and adequate understanding of the role that should play to the child’s parents, is associated with a sense of responsibility for learning and healthy development of the child, as defined relationship to the child’s parents, understanding their needs, aspirations and ambitions. The size and nature of the occurrence of conflicts in the family influenced by a variety of factors are mutually conditioning. This situation forces us to take practical measures and solutions.

In the article there has been introduced the concept concerning family conflicts and troubles experienced by people in their families. There have also been introduced conflict resolutions strategies and abilities used by family members in conflict situations. The author points out in particular to types of family conflicts and reasons for family conflict. One of several approaches to conflict resolution is mediation. It is a way of resolving disputes between two or more parties that uses a “third party” intermediary to help the disputing people resolve their conflict. The author pays special attention to divorce mediation that is an alternative to traditional divorce litigation. The main idea of this article is the assumption that mediation helps the couple learn to communicate again for the sake of the children and to work together as parents. There have been also remarkably emphasized flexibility and confidentiality of mediation.

Objective. To evaluate of life quality among male shift-workers. Methods: Research based on a self-devised questionnaire, conducted among 700 shift-workers, followed by statistical analysis of the results. Results. Nearly a half of respondents (43.00%) reported that shift-work influences the quality of their family life. Remarkably, such an opinion was often stated by people with children (46.01%) p<0.05, the divorced (58.22%), married people (44.74%) and bachelors (25.33%), respectively. Fathers usually indicated lack of contact with their family as well as irregular consumption of meals (66.91%). Almost every third respondent noted that their shift type of work negatively influence their sexual life (31.14%). Conclusions. It was shown that shift-work negatively influences the respondents’ life quality in the form of deterioration of the quality of family life; the respondents, regardless of marital status, age and having children, most often complained about the lack of contact with the family and irregular eating with them; negative influence on sexual life, which was the case in one-third of respondents. In order to encourage healthy behaviour and increase the quality of life of people performing shift-work, training and programmes should be introduced. These would help shift- workers to adjust their work time to their family and social life.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze the role of general and occupational stress in the relationship between workaholism (recognized in two ways: as addiction and as behavioral tendency) and the intensity of work-family and familywork conflict. Materials and Methods: The study included 178 working people. The survey was conducted at three stages - half a year before a holiday, right after the holiday and half a year after the holiday. The Excessive Work Involvement Scale (SZAP) by Golińska for the measurement of workaholism recognized as addiction; The Scale of Workaholism as Behavioral Tendencies (SWBT) by Mudrack and Naughton as adapted by Dudek et al for the measurement of workaholism as behavioral tendency; the Perceived Stress Scale by Cohen et al., as adapted by Juczyński for the measurement of general stress; the Scale of Occupational Stress by Stanton in the adaptation of Dudek and Hauk for measurement of occupational stress; the Scale of Work-Family Conflict WFC/FWC by Netemeyer et al. with the Polish adaptation of A.M. Zalewska. Workaholism was measured once - before a holiday, the explained and intervening variables (the level of conflicts and stress, respectively) were measured at three stages. To test the mediating role of general and occupational stress, hierarchical regression analysis as well as the method of bootstrapping were applied. Results and Conclusions: Our results indicate that general stress is an important mediator of the relationship between workaholism recognized as an addiction and work-family conflicts. Occupational stress turned out to be the only mediator in the relationship between workaholism (recognized as an addiction) and the work-family conflict, noted exclusively in the first stage of the study. Both general and occupational stress were not significant mediators in the relationship between workaholism recognized as a behavioral tendency and the conflicts described.

This article attempts to analyze the problems arising at the junction of two social institutions: the army and military families. It shows, in the face of the transformations taking place in the area of family life and in the face of professionalization of the Polish Armed Forces, how complex relationships between these two worlds are created. The article raises the issue of dual loyalty and „greed” of these institutions. A feature that modern family and the army share is the fact that each of these institutions would like to focus the attention and energy of its members and involve them in their actions as much as possible, which would secure their operations. Such a demanding attitude, however, has a negative impact on the performance of social roles outside the institution. The empirical analyses on the topic conclude with the condition and problems of modern military family. They also show how the duties and requirements for the profession of a soldier affect the organization, structure and functions of the family, the course and the rhythm of their life, homely atmosphere, the content and scope of the role played, the manner of satisfying their needs and the lever of the satisfaction. This text is a contribution to further research of the presented issue.

The Bible tells us not only about God, but about human beings and anthropological relationships. By reflecting on relationships of some biblical families, we can gain the potentials of overcoming different kinds of deep relational conflicts. In this way we might learn how to approach Jeremiah’s prophetic oracle: No longer will anyone go around saying, “Sour grapes eaten by parents leave a sour taste in the mouths of their children” (Jer. 31:29). According to the stories about Abraham and his family, Isaac and his family, Jacob and his family, and Josef and his reconciliation with his brothers in Egypt, we see that the “taste of the grapes” from the previous generations undoubtedly affects the next generation. To overcome the negative consequences and to prevail over the compulsive repetitions of the past generations, the biblical stories have lessons that cannot be ignored, lessons that are didactic even to contemporary men and women, especially in the context of the crisis which family life is experiencing today. By accepting the history and in learning from it, which includes at least some levels of forgiveness and reconciliation with the past, the next generation can potentiality cultivate the ability to “live different” and to “do better”. In that context God is giving the chance for a “new life” to each new generation.

Background: This paper presents the results of the study concerning mutual relations between work–family conflict and family– work conflict in the context of age and sex. Material and Methods: The study included 223 subjects (115 women, 108 men, 74 mothers and 61 fathers), aged 21–63. The Work–Family and Family–Work Conflicts Questionnaire and socio-demographic questionnaire were used as the survey tools. To verify hypotheses the correlation analysis and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used. Results: It has been found that a stronger work–family conflict is experienced by the examined men and fathers and a stronger family–work conflict is observed among parents. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between the number of working hours per day and work–family conflict and family–work conflict. Work–family conflict among mothers is significantly correlated with the income. The family–work conflict is stronger in the middle adulthood group. Background: The objective of the study was to the determine of neuroticism, requirements of the labor market and work-family conflict while exploring consequences of various aspects of job stress in occupationally active parents. Material and Methods: The investigations covered 159 females and 154 males from families where both parents are occupationally active and bring up at least one child aged up to 12 years. The following consequences of occupational stress were analyzed: the state of psychological health self-reported by the employees (symptoms of somatic disorders, anxiety and insomnia, functioning disorders, symptoms of depression, global distress), as well as distress experienced at work, employee intention to turnover, and job satisfaction. Results: The importance of neuroticism, work demands, and work-family conflict varies when explaining individual consequences of job stress. Of all the predictors analyzed, neuroticism is significantly correlated with the majority of consequences. Having considered the importance of work-family conflict, the role of work demands in understanding various consequences of job stress is much lower or even statistically insignificant. Conclusions: The construction of complex theoretical models, taking account of a wide range of factors related with the sphere of occupational activity, the role of work-family conflict and individual factors, allow for a better understanding of the determinants of job stress and its consequences.
