Opis:
The aim of this article is to carry out analyses of professional and family activities of women, based on the results of the study “Psychophysical health of women during and after menopause in terms of preserving their ability to work”. This study was conducted in the years 2014–2016 on a sample of 300 women, in the Institute of Rural Health in Lublin on behalf of the Central Institute for Labour Protection in Warsaw. Menopausal and postmenopausal period corresponds to non-mobility working age in economics – that is 45–60 years old. Professional and family activities are the most important in a woman’s life, but they are competing against each other. Professional and family activities of the surveyed women can be assessed positively.
Celem artykułu jest przeprowadzenie analizy aktywności zawodowej i rodzinnej kobiet na podstawie wyników badania pt. „Zdrowie psychofizyczne kobiet w okresie około- i pomenopauzalnym w aspekcie zachowania ich zdolności do pracy”. Badanie to zostało przeprowadzone w latach 2014–2016 na próbie 300 kobiet w Instytucie Medycyny Wsi w Lublinie na zlecenie Centralnego Instytutu Ochrony Pracy w Warszawie. Okres około- i pomenopauzalny odpowiada w ekonomii wiekowi produkcyjnemu niemobilnemu, czyli 45–60 lat. Aktywność zawodowa i rodzinna jest najważniejsza w życiu kobiety, jednak są one konkurencyjne wobec siebie. Aktywność zawodową i rodzinną badanych kobiet można ocenić pozytywnie.

A rational organization of leisure time should be a priority for the family environment. This problem is particularly important in the era of modern civilization, dominated by passive forms of recreation, resulting in many hours spent sitting in front of the TV and the computer screen. The role of parents should be based on a conscious and deliberate preparation of children and young people for a proper organization of their leisure time. It is important that parents’ activities encourage young people to participate in individual and organized forms of physical activity (sport, tourism, and recreation). Previous studies clearly indicate that physical activity in childhood influences the physical activity in adulthood. The processes of awakening interest, searching for patterns of behavior and forming habits related to various types of physical activity are all elements of lifelong learning.

The study focused on the involvement of children and adults in family leisure activities during pandemic-related lockdowns in relation to the WHO’s recommendations regarding physical activity. The study is based on data collected from adolescents (n = 89) and their parents (n = 73) selected from among inhabitants of Poznan and its neighbouring areas. Physical activity levels were determined using a Physical Activity Screening Measure. The results suggest a negative impact of the pandemic on leisure physical activity undertaken by members of the surveyed families. In order to effectively monitor the effects of the pandemic on family physical activity, it is necessary to develop experimental projects in the form of interventional programs.

Research background: This paper explores the approach that focuses on entrepreneurial activities suppressed by restraining forces or different barriers. We investigated a particular type of obstacles reported by entrepreneurs, i.e., those which prevented their gaining access to support instruments. This paper delved into the specificity of family businesses and explained why perceptions of access to support could differ between family and non-family firms. Purpose of the article: This paper seeks to identify the differences between family and non-family businesses in terms of their perceptions of different barriers that hinder access to support instruments. Methods: The main research processes were based on logistic regression models with a dependent variable: 0 for a non-family firm and 1 for a family firm.  As dependent variables 13 barriers to the access of public support instruments were adopted. The study was conducted on a sample of 386 Polish business entities. Findings & value added: The results confirmed the existence of differences between family and non-family businesses in perceptions of barriers towards gaining support in entrepreneurial endeavours. Obstacles, such as overly-complex bureaucratic procedures and requirements, lack of access to information disseminated by business support institutions, and complicated support settlement procedures, were perceived as far less crucial by family businesses than non-family businesses. Family businesses demonstrated a lower propensity to use real property as collateral for transactions. Additionally, family businesses with financial resources that overlap with their own familial resources declared that they found it easier to make their own contributions to satisfy the requirements for support programmes or services. This paper makes several novel and significant contributions to the field. First, we add to existing research focusing exclusively on family entrepreneurial activity by drawing a comparison between family and non-family firms in terms of the perceived barriers towards gaining support. Second, we address different types of barriers. Our findings provide further evidence that different types of businesses perceive certain types of barriers differently. Third, we extend current knowledge on family businesses study in Poland.

Policies of particular states are different in terms of the amount and availability of family benefits, and that can be reflected in women’s willingness to return to work.

Objectives The aim of the study is to describe both professional and social activities of patients after heart transplant. Material and Methods Ninety-five heart transplant patients treated at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze were surveyed, comprising 29 women (30.5%) and 66 men (69.5%). The average age of respondents was 54.3 years old (standard deviation (SD) = 15 years); the average period that had elapsed since the heart transplant was 7.1 years (SD = 4 years). We designed a questionnaire as a tool for collecting information from patients. Results Twenty-five percent of patients worked at the time of completion of the questionnaire. Eighty percent of those patients were working before and after the transplant, 20% – only after transplantation (p < 0.05). A different job position at a new workplace had 47.8% of patients, 34.8% of them had the same job position at the same work place as they had had before, 63.4% of the heart transplant respondents were pensioners. Eighty-two percent of patients had a certificate with a designated degree of disability – among them: 69% had a certificate for a significant degree of disability, 22% – for a moderate degree of disability. Among those surveyed, 52.5% said that their financial situation had not changed whereas 34.5% of those surveyed reported a change for the worse. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported changes in family relationships. Seventy-seven percent reported that they received help from family members, as compared with 19% who did not. Conclusions Only 25.3% of the patients treated at the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases after heart transplant are employed and it is one of the lowest employment rates in this category of patients in Europe. One third of working patients have the same work place as they had before their operation. Heart transplant is a cause of changes in family relationships. Most often family bonds are strengthened but sometimes family members become nervous, impatient and unwilling to talk about the transplant.

The article presents the careers of two representatives of one of the oldest Polish magnate families – Tęczyński, coat of arms Topór, the elder sons of Andrzej (d. 1588), the governor of Krakow: Gabriel (d. 1617), the voivode of Lublin and Andrzej (d. 1613), the castellan of Bełz, living at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. It has been proven that after a long period of education outside the borders of the Commonwealth, which was interrupted in 1593 by an episode, when the brothers were sent to the General Sejm, from the beginning of the 17th century, as young magnate sons, they actively participated in the public life. Gabriel worked in the local government of the Lublin Voivodeship, while Andrzej was a member of the Opatów regional parliament. Although the brothers did not reach the highest state offices – the end of Gabriel's career was Lublin voivodship, and Andrzej castellany of Bełz – they showed significant activity during the Sandomierz rebellion in 1606-1607, taking the side of the royal camp. In the following years, Andrzej Tęczyński expressed his support for the royal party in his views and attitude, while the elder Gabriel distanced himself from the policy of Sigismund III Vasa at least from 1611. Their careers ended with fairly sudden deaths, after which the public activity was taken up by the youngest of their brothers - Jan Magnus (d. 1637), the voivode of Kraków, with whom the Tęczyński line came to an end.

Opis:
The impact of physical activity on mental health is widely described in literature. Less attention is given to factors which may modify this correlation, except for gender. The aim of this study was to conduct a qualitative assessment of such papers relating to children and young people. Selected papers were evaluated with regard to additional factors related to family, school and neighborhood. Attention was drawn to the definitions of these variables, the methods of analysis, and the content of the discussion. The starting point for this study included 7 systematic reviews published in 2006–2018. A total of 161 full articles described in detail in those reviews, and representing different research patterns, were selected for qualitative analysis. They met the criteria for the type of publication, mental health outcome, the direction of association, and the age group. A supplementary section of this paper contains a review of Polish literature from the Polish Medical Bibliography, and an analysis of national studies and some more recent papers not included in the analyzed reviews. It was demonstrated that 33 papers analyzed environmental variables to a greater degree than the characteristics of the sample. Twenty-three papers containing the results of statistical analyses were considered to be of particular interest. Almost 50% of these included both the socio-economic position of the family and the characteristics of the neighborhood. However, only 1 featured stratification of the sample with regard to contextual environmental variables. The obtained results are of great practical importance. Firstly, development of the research into environmental moderators should be advocated. Secondly, the social context in which adolescents grow up should be taken into account when designing intervention programs. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(4):423–39

Taking into account the significant role of family home in the process of shaping human pro-social attitudes, the investigations undertaken were aimed at determining which of the specific features and components of family home have a significant impact on undertaking and conducting socially useful activities by volunteers. The subject of the empirical research of the study were the family homes of the surveyed volunteers, which may be a factor conditioning the undertaking of local initiatives. The aim of the research was to: diagnose which of the elements characterizing the family home of the surveyed volunteers constituted the source of undertaking and conducting their voluntary activity; learning about the nature of interpersonal bonds in the home of the surveyed social workers and determining the role of the family home in the care, upbringing and education of the surveyed volunteers, which determines the undertaking and conducting of local initiatives by them in the studied area. The research used the method of individual cases, and the research material was obtained using the interview technique. The analysis of the research results showed that both the positive components of the family home (pro-social patterns presented by parents, good material base, mutual understanding of family members) and its negative elements (emotional coldness, fear of criticism, materialism) direct the pro-social activities undertaken by the surveyed volunteers. As a result of the research, several models of the family home that are conducive to undertaking voluntary activities have been developed. An important conclusion from the analyzes carried out is the confirmation of the fact that, despite its diversity, each of the family homes of the surveyed volunteers to some extent conditioned the decisions of the social worker to undertake voluntary activities.

Opis:
Disadvantageous social & demographic trends in the European Union, in particular, ageing of the society and the decrease in the reproduction, force a public debate focused on conditions which could promote linking of the professional life and the family life. One of significant elements of the family promoting policy must be employment market situation adjusted to the needs of women, who must work and face the family issues. A substantial matter for women, who are mothers, is liquidation of obstacles arising from the return of women to the employment market. Giving birth must not mean falling out of the market and the long-term unemployment. Previous efforts made in Poland have failed. Even worse, the latest data regarding the unemployment rate originating from the MPiPS (Ministry of Labor and Social Policy) show that at the end of the first half 2012, the unemployment record contained data of 211 thousands women who did not return to work after they had given birth. This is by 18 thousand more than in 2011 and by 36 thousand more compared to 2010. Moreover, in Poland, when a woman returns to work after the expiration of the maternity leave, a guarantee of getting her job back is limited (art. 1832 Labor Code); she is not protected from a dismissal. The goal of this paper is an assessment of Polish mothers-managers situation, including situation of women who run their businesses, returning to the employment market after giving birth. The results are based on own survey. To achieve the goal the impact of changes on the employment market in the twenty first century on the contemporary family model was described. A previous model, so called single breadwinner, that is a traditional family model with a man being the sole person who works, is no longer valid. Moreover, there were enumerated factors, which affect the professional activity of women-mothers, on the basis of research in the framework of the scientific project “Social Diagnosis 2000-2009”. They proved that having a baby means nearly 100% increase in the professional activity of fathers and the decrease in the professional activity of mothers by 75%. In order to achieve the goal the following methods and analysis were used: the descriptive method, comparative analysis and the critical analysis of results. The analyses were based on own studies carried out from May to July 2012. The subject of the study was a group of 263 women. All of the women had children, they were professionally active and all of them were hired on managerial positions or they run their private businesses. The women lived in Jelenia Góra, Kamienna Góra and Wałbrzych poviats. The survey aimed to diagnose the situation of women who had children on the employment market and to assess the impact of having children on the professional status. The survey proved that mothers-managers stay beyond the employment market no longer than the statutory time of the maternity leave. More than 70% women did not use the right to the child care leave and the remaining approx. 30% women resigned the leave after 3-6 months. The women explained that they were worried about losing their jobs, losing incomes, and in the future, having lower pensions. Finally, they were worried that their skills would become poor which could negatively affect their chances for professional promotion. It should be mentioned that 62% women established their businesses having in mind the problems which occur after giving birth or no chance to be employed, in particular until a child is 4 years old. In the light of such results of the survey the author concludes that the extension of the maternity leave time may not be accepted by women who take managerial positions and those who run their own businesses. However, other changes are desired (presented in the conclusions section) e.g.: setting up a chain of day nurseries, kindergartens and common rooms open till 8 p.m., setting up a chain of easily accessible services which decrease the liabilities of women in terms of housework, setting up complex work-life programs, promotion of flexible work time and modern forms of employment (e.g., telecommuting, like in France which implemented a tax relief for mothers who choose this form of employment, or possibility to work partially at home), and, which is very significant, promotion of the social acceptance for men’s engagement into child care and family duties.

Introduction: Lack of physical activity has become a tremendous health problem in young people, notably in the digital communication era. Due to burdensome academic tasks, the situation may be more rigorous for medical students. The family structure is supposed to influence children’s physical activity patterns. Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate the effect of family structure on physical activity levels in medical students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was followed by 109 students; 75 (68.8%) were female. Gender, family structure, parents’ level of physical activity, number of families, and the presence of grandparents were included as independent variables. In contrast, students’ level of physical activity was a dependent variable. Data on independent variables were obtained through a guided interview. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied to assess students’ level of physical activity. Variables were dichotomously categorized to simplify statistical testing. Chi-square was applied to reveal the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 39 (35.8%) students had low IPAQ score, 47 (43.1%) moderate, and 23 (21.1%) high. Most students (61.4%) lived in a nuclear family. There were 55 students (50.5%) who lived with family members less than 5; only 31 (28.4%) reported the presence of grandparents in their homes. Most students’ parents reported doing sufficient regular exercise (73.1%). Students’ IPAQ score was associated with the family type (OR 3.56, 95% CI 1.53–8.20, p = 0.002) and the presence of grandparents (OR 3.76, 95% CI 1.57–9.00, p = 0.002). Conclusion: Medical students who lived in a nuclear family and lived without their grandparents had higher physical activity levels.

The socio-economic transformations taking place in the contemporary world condition the shape of the family and the quality of the process of the development, upbringing and socialization of the youngest generation. Family life has become subordinate to a professional career, which is an important factor in these transformations. The assumption that a properly functioning family is the best environment for child-rearing, as it provides stimuli necessary for children’s harmonious and comprehensive development, leads to the diagnosis of the changes affecting the family. Opis:
Cel badań. Celem badań było poznanie zależności pomiędzy środowiskiem rodzinnym a poziomem aktywności fizycznej dzieci. Materiały i metody. Badaniom poddano 191 osób (65 dzieci, 65 matek oraz 61 ojców). Dzieci należały do grupy osób aktywnych fizycznie, natomiast wśród rodziców znalazły się osoby zarówno aktywne, jak i nieaktywne fizycznie. W badaniach wykorzystano Kwestionariusz KŚRS do oceny środowiska rodzinnego, Kwestionariusz IPAQ do oceny poziomu aktywności fizycznej oraz ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Wyniki. Wnioski. Poziom aktywności fizycznej dzieci związany jest z różnorodnymi czynnikami środowiska rodzinnego (np. poprawnymi relacjami interpersonalnymi w rodzinie, tradycjami).
Background. The purpose of the article was to examine the relationship between the family environment and the level of physical activity among children. Material and methods. The group of respondents consisted of 191 people (65 children, 65 mothers, and 61 fathers). The examined children belonged to the group of physically active people, while the parents were active or inactive physically. In the research, the KŚRS questionnaire for athletes’ family environment evaluation, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and an own questionnaire were applied. Results. Good interpersonal relations in the family turned out the main family environment predictor of the level of physical activity among children. The analysis concerning gender differences in the context of physical activity showed that boys more often than girls presented high-intensity activity. Also, discrepancies were observed between the parents and children regarding the forms of activity, as well as motives and ways of encouragement. Conclusions. The results of research showed that the level of children’s physical activity was connected with a variety of factors of the family environment (e.g. good interpersonal relations in the family, traditions).
