Opis:
Tree architecture is thought to allow species to share available resources both above and below ground. The description of plant architecture is useful to model plant structure and function, as well as interactions with other species or generally with the environment. The aim of this study was to present a conceptual implementation of a simple photogrammetric method for the above-ground tree architecture description of leafless individuals growing under different conditions. The implemented method was single- image photogrammetry. The novel aspect is the heuristic assumption that tree’s image is a projection onto a plane that cross-sections the stem base; which enables assessment of a set of the canopy attributes, with only one image involved. The method was tested in two ways: (1) in the field: in terms of its applicability to real trees, we used 31 plots with different terrain slope and tree density, in natural forest, in every case the target tree was European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) which is known as a very plastic tree species, and (2) with virtual tree-like 3D models, created with L-system rules, to determine the accuracy of the method. Some of the traits measured or estimated with respect to the projection plane α are: the length of the trunk and branches (L), inclination of the tree main axis from the vertical (IA), crown width (CW), two opposite crown radius (CR), crown length (CL); and the external factors, like the terrain slope inclination (S) and number of trees competing for light (N). The advantages (e.g., low time consumption and low cost), difficulties (e.g., occlusion of tree tops) and accuracy in idealised conditions were described. The tree traits that can be measured using the proposed method are essential for estimating many ecological parameters. Our method allows reducing fieldwork time to a minimum and taking measurements of large numbers of plots daily when the environmental conditions are similar, even when they are taken by only one person. This method is very useful for conducting studies on a temporal scale (e.g., to record changes in the branching structure). Future research is needed to validate the method in different environments.

Opis:
The investigation of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper content was carried out in the soil (from the level 0–10 cm) and in the leaves of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the Bieszczady National Park. Samples of soil and plants material were collected in 2007 from 63 selected sites. The level of Zn, Cd and Cu in the plants leaves and soil was below the values considered as toxic levels for the protected area. The lowest and the average (4,4 ěg/g d.m.) concentrations of copper in the leaves of Fagus sylvatica L. were definitely lower than the normal level, which indicated a deficiency of that element. In the analyzed soil samples it was noted that the concentration of Pb (mean 31 ěg/g d.m.) which as higher than the normal level for the protected area.
Przeprowadzono badania dotyczące zawartości metali ciężkich (Zn, Cd, Cu i Pb) w liściach Fagus sylvatica L. i w wierzchniej (0.10 cm) warstwie gleby na terenie Bieszczadzkiego Parku Narodowego.

Opis:
As of 2019, the total area of forest stands with the varying proportion of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in composition on the Ukrainian Roztochchia was 11,251.3 ha and the area of pine stands involving European beech in composition was 6879.5 ha. Pine stands involving beech in composition are formed on the fresh, moist and boggy relatively pure and relatively rich soil condition. Pine forest stands (average share of pine exceeds 56%), which include beech in composition occupy more than 80% of the total area of interest. Mature and overmature forest stands dominate most of the landscape. More than 85% of stands are characterized by an average relative completeness. Undergrowth of deciduous tree species, which is mainly formed by European beech or hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and rarely by common oak (Quercus robur L.) or sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), is available under a canopy of middle-aged, ripening and mature stands. The study points to the need to rethink forest management approaches and eventually to use such methods of forest cuttings that ensure natural regeneration not only of a European beech and common oak, but primarily of a pine. The practice of creating pine plantations in such conditions favourable for its growth and development should be used only in those cases when it is impossible to achieve natural regeneration of pine.

The paper presents the variation in the percentage of tree clusters, tree distribution pattern and tree morphology (crown base height, stem inclination) along the distance gradient from the upper forest limit. It was ascertained that vegetative reproduction through branch and stem rooting and root and stem suckers is of a great significance for beech stand dynamics and regeneration in the upper timberline area in the Bieszczady Zachodnie Mountains.

The aim of the study was to estimate the diversity of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seeds in Poland in the years 1992−2004. The investigation started in 1992 when seeds were collected from thirteen selected beech provenances and continued in the following period 1995−2004 with samples of seeds from Seed−Quality Assessment Laboratory. Significant differences in size, shape, vitality and weight of the beech seeds were found between crop years and regions of Poland.

Opis:
The experimental area is located in the Wêgorzyno Forest Sub-District, £obez Forest District. 29 Polish provenances of beech from their natural range were growth in a completely randomized block design with four replications. In 2010, after the end of the growing season, measurements were carried out on the experimental plot, including: determination of the survival rate and the diameter at breast height, and height of trees. Moreover, the total basal area and the total volume were calculated. Using ANOVA, statistically significant differences between provenances were apparent for four of the five traits measured; all except diameter at breast height. Provenances characterized by high values for the analyzed traits were considered the best adapted to the habitat conditions in the experimental plot, while provenances reaching low values were considered unsuitable for use under the conditions similar to those at the trial site location.

Studies on the structure of a 140 to160−year−old Fagus sylvatica stand at Chorzów, Upper Silesia were undertaken. The single−layer stand had a dense canopy and was in good health. Limited natural regeneration occurred. There were numerous seedlings reaching 0.5 m in height growing in well−lit places. However, the rate of seedling occurrence was low under the dense canopy, indicating that insufficient light is the main factor affecting the degree of regeneration.

The study was based on the empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn (6 plots) and Stare Jabłonki (6 plots) forest districts. On the basis of the collected material, a height growth model was developed for the beech growing in the lower storey of pine stands. The developed functions can be used, inter alia, for the characterisation of top−height growth with stand age, development of a network of site indices, as well as in the studies on the height growth rate.

The study focused primarily on the analysis of the periodic annual and mean annual increment and on the recognition of the growth phases for beech growing in the lower storey of beech−pine stands. The empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn and Stare Jabłonki Forest Districts was used for the study. The height increment of the beech trees from the second storey of beech−pine stands under study culminated earlier than the height increment of the beech trees from pure, one−storied stands. The beech trees growing in the second storey are also characterised by a shorter juvenile phase.
