Opis:
When analyzing the structure of the soul, Aristotle distinguished three faculties: the theoretical, the practical and the technical one. The latter two are the focus of this paper. The division could be perceived as an abstract description of diverse functions and purposes of the faculties, but it does not imply factual dissociation between them if we take under consideration their functioning. On the contrary, Aristotle suggested that it would be impossible to detach the practical reasoning from the operational one, for the former stipulated the goal, whereas the latter provided the means for its fulfillment. The genuine intellectual disposition, which supplements the practical reason with the proper means was referred to as ‘cleverness’ (δεινότης). Cleverness has usually been associated with the technical faculty but it also seems to be, first and foremost, the disposition to inventiveness in a broader sense. Although Aristotle did not formulate this directly, it is plausible to view the practical and technical faculty as depending on each other, as far as their products and works are useful to pursue the practical goals and the practical reasoning determines the extent of the possibilities and limitations of their utility in the field of politics. The disposition to cleverness made the cooperation of those faculties possible.

Opis:
The article presents historical background and the origins of the Polish first faculty of electrical engineering that was funded in Warsaw – the older faculties had been operating exclusively in Lviv University of Technology. It emphasises usually-unknown organisational actions of representatives of the then cultural elite and at the time narrow group of Polish electrotechnicians. Despite adversities due to their enormous potential and involvement, it was possible to begin to teach subjects of electrotechnics – at first in Russian and later on after the Second World War was over, in Polish. Effort of splendid scientists such as Mieczysław Pożaryski, Kazimierz Drewnowski, Stanisław Patschke, Leon Staniewicz, Konstanty Żórawski, Stanisław Odrowąż-Wysocki, Janusz Groszkowski, and many more enabled founding on 14 July in 1921 Faculty of Electrotechnology at the Warsaw University of Technology that, as an independent institution, has been providing teaching and research.

Opis:
The article (part one) presents historical background and the origins of a university of technology in the city of Warsaw – Polytechnic, where the lectures were given in Polish. It emphasises usually-unknown organisational actions of representatives of the then cultural elite and at the time narrow group of Polish electrotechnicians. It was due to their enormous potential and involvement that Poland not only regained independence but many state-run institutions could be established, hiring highly professional scientists and economists. The achievements would be impossible, however, if not for the favourable political situation in Europe in 1920s. The heroism and valour of the patriots of that time led to the success that has been bearing fruit ever after.
W artykule (część I) przedstawiono tło historyczne i okoliczności powstania w Warszawie wyższej uczelni technicznej – Politechniki, z językiem wykładowym polskim. Heroizm i bohaterstwo ówczesnych patriotów przyniosło sukces, z którego dobrodziejstw do dziś czerpiemy. W części drugiej przedstawione zostaną zasługi poszczególnych pracowników naukowych i technicznych Politechniki Warszawskiej, zwłaszcza Wydziału Elektrycznego, w odzyskaniu niepodległości, a następnie w budowie odrodzonego państwa.

While discussion on faculty development in China has been increasing in recent years, our understanding of the strategy for the development remains limited. This study with a survey aimed to examine whether e-learning could meet faculty members’ expectations for their professional development. Our findings suggest that e-learning is identified as a preferred means of opening new opportunities to meet the needs of faculty in China where faculty development still remains traditional training and it has bright prospects. The result also highlights individual perspectives as a critical factor shaping e-learning behavior, and provides implications for the policy of faculty development.

Opis:
Aim: The aim of the reserch is to explore the possibility of integrating Sciences and Humanities in the Faculty of Education using Ecocriticism books and literary workshops with didactic activities of interdisciplinary nature. Methods: The experience was carried out with 100 students of the Faculty of Education of the University of Valencia from the subjects “Natural Sciences for teachers” and “Literary training for teachers”, where different didactic activities around two literary works, a novel and a short story, were proposed. Results: After the activities, the vast mayority of the students consider that Literature can help to learn Science. 41'7% of the students of “Literary training for teachers” and 62.5% of “Natural Sciences for teachers” consider the integration of Sciences and Humanities in class “very important”; and 55.6% and 29.2% “quite important”. More than 90% of the students said they were “very” or “quite” conscious of sustainability and environmental protection, although the percentages vary slightly between the two classes. Conclusion: With this study we have shown that Ecocriticism and Education are two interlinked concepts, in the same way that literature and society are. Using the socializing function of literature is when we can have greater educational performance in the current classrooms, because it allows the students to connect their reality with the texts. These ecocriticism works are a first-order didactic resource to raise awareness about environmental and sustainability problems in pre-service teachers that will transmit the message to their future students.

Scant literature is available on procedural justice – organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) via mediating role of leader-member exchange (LMX) in higher education context especially in Asian countries like Pakistan. For this purpose, data was collected from 452 permanent and contractual teaching faculty serving in different positions at private and public sector degree awarding institutes / universities accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. Mediated regression analysis, as proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986), was employed to address the research hypothesis. Results showed that LMX fully mediates the relationship of procedural justice OCB. Implications for future researchers and academic administrators are presented.

Opis:
In the years of 1784-1871 the university in Lvov was re-opened as a German Josephine University with the following faculties: Philosophical, Theological, Legal, and Medical. In the initial period of the 19th century the then professors did not conduct a more reliable and systematic research on the history of the Church. The history of the Church, nevertheless, was regularly lectured within the schedule of the particular faculties. The following father professors worked then: J. B. Fisinger, A. Bielecki, F. K. Zachariasiewicz, O. Krynicki, J.Delkiewicz, and others. From the 1960s onwards the university was gradually polonised, and in 1871 it became a Polish university at which the Ukrainian language had the same rights. It was only then that historians started research mainly on the period of the Middle Ages, including the origins of the Church in the world and in Poland. Works were written that discussed the organisational and political relations between the Church and the state during the first centuries. It was then that biographies of the first Polish bishops, archbishops, lives of the saints, the first papers characterising some pontificates, history of the papacy and the relations between the Polish Republic and the Vatican, together with some more reliable works on the history of the Eastern Church. At the Philosophical Faculty in the period of positivism there were the following departments: of universal history, of Austria, of Poland and modern history. The department of universal history was conducted from 1863 on by H. Zeissberg, then K. Liske. In the years of 1891-1914 it was run by R. Dembiński, who specialised in the history of the Church, studied the history of papacy and its position towards Poland. The department of the history of Austria was run from 1871 on by I. Szaraniewicz; he studied mainly the history of Russia and the Eastern Church. The history of the Church, the legal aspect of its existence and activity, remained in the field of interest of the scholars working at the Faculty of Law: E. Rittner and J. Kasznica. Their heritage was taken over in 1888 by the canon law professor W. Abraham, one of the then most eminent experts on the history of the Church at Lvov University. A separate department of the history of the Church was established at the Faculty of Theology. In this department lectures were delivered by Rev. J. Delkiewicz and Rev. E. Skrochowski. From 1895 to 1912 Rev. J. Fijałek worked in this department, an eminent historian of the Church, the author of numerous publications on the history of the Catholic and Eastern Churches, on the law and church organisation, on the Scriptures, and on the devotion to the Mother of God, and many others. Professors of Lvov University in the 19th century initiated pioneer researches on the history of the Church in Poland; many of their publications are relevant still today.

Opis:
There are two major theories about the origin of human syntax: evolutionary and catastrophic, the latter appears more probable on theoretical and empirical grounds, the most serious reason being the problem with imagining the intermediate stages between protosyntax and full-blown syntax (Bickerton 1998). The “missing link” is recently often associated with recursion, a sole element of human syntax considered specifically human and specifically linguistic. Some accounts associate this trigger with a subpart of recursion, either operation Merge or a subpart of Merge, operation Label (Hornstein 2009) which by breaking the initial symmetry provides a sine qua non condition for asymmetric syntax in terms of endocentricity, phrase structure and, consequently, recursive embedding. My hypothesis is that assuming the catastrophic scenario, more than one catastrophic event must have happened in a very short time. Given that human vocal tract and human phonetics and phonology have several unique features compared with Great Apes (hierarchical but non-recursive structure, speech imitation skills, abundant use of formants, lack of laryngeal air sacks in the vocal tract) and given that the phonological form constitutes the interface of the human syntax, the mere addition of Label to the already existing operations of the protolanguage is insufficient, since (1) it does not account for the emergence of the phonologically interfaced syntax, (2) it fails to explain the indisociability of non-syntactic elements of language in terms of phonology, semantics and syntax as evidenced in Jackendoff (2011). Consequently, I assume that human language emerged as a result of at least two catastrophic processes: catastrophic emergence of phonetics and catastrophic emergence of syntax accompanied by the rapid expansion of the lexicon, the latter possibly as a result of a quantitative rather than qualitative development. The emergence of human phonology might have occurred gradually, but as a result of the catastrophic emergence of phonetics.

The aim of the research was to acquire knowledge about students’ physical activity in their free time according to their chosen faculties. Subject of the research were the students from seven faculties in two universities from Biała Podlaska: computer science, public health, medicine, nursing, tourism and recreation, physiotherapy and PE (physical education) – 548 people in total were the participants. In the work, the method of diagnostic survey based upon the questionnaire technique was applied. Faculty is the aspect that has great impact on the type of chosen forms of physical activities, reasons of its choice, barrier and importance of physical activities in the participants’ lives. Students from such faculties as PE and tourism and recreation show more physical activity in contrast to students from other faculties. More attention should be paid to extension and promotion of physical activity – a very important part of healthy lifestyle - in didactical-educational work of universities.

HISTORY OF THE CONCEPT OF INTUITION
INTUITION
KNOWING
KNOWLEDGE
Opis:
This paper is a part of my research into the history of the concept of intuition and the category of insight in the writings of Canadian philosopher and theologian Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984). Philosophical discussions make use of many partly or totally different concepts of intuition, and the variety of those concepts is related to many aspects of intuition: the type of 'object' that intuition is; the way intuition grasps its object; its epistemic functions, etc. From the metatheoretical point of view the question is: historically, what type of 'object' (designatum) was denoted by the term intuition and its foreign language counterparts? In employing the term designatum of 'intuition' I am looking for more general categories for intuition. In classical terms, it is about finding the genus proximus for intuition. I distinguish and characterize three basic types of denotation of the term intuition: 1) (intuitive) knowing, as a cognitive act (for example insight), or as something that is not an act, or as a process; 2) (intuitive) knowledge, as propositional knowledge (propositions, beliefs) or as non-propositional knowledge (knowledge-how or knowledge by acquaintance), and 3) faculty (for example intellect) or ability (disposition) of mind to produce intuitive knowledge.
