The paper describes the first hundred years of the history of eye tracking as a research method, dividing it into three phases of development. It starts by presenting the studies on tracing eye movements in reading in the end of the 19th century and the creation of the first eye trackers. The further part presents how the eye tracking technology was improved in the time of film recordings, ceasing to be invasive for the eyes. It also shows how in this time the main focus of research shifted to practical aspects due to the development of the behaviourist movement in experimental psychology. The third phase starts in the 1970s, when researchers turned more towards the dependence between the perception and mental processes. It was linked to the establishment of a theoretical and methodological basis for cognitive psychology.

Opis:
The scientific objective of the study was to identify factors modifying the eye movements observed during the performance of mental rotation tasks. On the one hand, differences were sought in indicators concerning eye movements between the phases of the perception of an object in the original and rotated positions; on the other hand, the study tested the influence of object complexity on the strength of similarity between perception and visualization in terms of the times of eye fixation in corresponding regions of interest. The results showed longer mean fixation times as well as a lower number and frequency of eye fixations when visualizing objects compared to viewing them. It can therefore be concluded that mental images required longer and deeper data processing than viewed objects did. The similarity of perception and visualization in terms of visual fixation times in corresponding regions of interest was stronger for simple objects than for complex ones. Moreover, it was demonstrated that for larger rotation angles the number of fixations was higher and their frequency was lower compared to smaller angles, which suggests an increase in perceived task difficulty and an increase in cognitive engagement with the increase in rotation angle.

Opis:
Emotions, especially stress, affect a student’s intellectual functioning, achievement and effectiveness in problem solving. Sources of stress include new and difficult situations in which there is frustration, essentially the set of unpleasant emotions associated with the inability to implement necessities or the difficulty in solving a task or problem. The reaction to stress is often an escape from the frustrating situation or resignation, which in the case of learning leads to a reduction of effectiveness. Therefore, an important aspect of teachers’ work is helping students to relieve stress and maintain their motivation to learn. This is particularly essential for school subjects that are generally considered by students to be difficult. This article discusses the results of studies in which the eye-tracking technique was used to identify emotions, especially stress, experienced during problem solving in physics, mathematics, computer science and biology. In this experiment, eye movement parameters and survey data were analysed with the aim of obtaining information on the subjective assessment of the stress level experienced during problem solving in the field of science. Participants included 45 pupils (middle school students). The results confirm the possibility of using eye-tracking data to diagnose negative emotions. The results of the studies might also be useful for teachers, who might be able to design a system of rapid intervention and student support, with the goal of stopping students from a quick resignation of solving problems. This study fits into the new trend of neurodidactics for the development of interdisciplinary research in the area of teaching

Opis:
This paper is the second part of research concerning students' view on usefulness of physics formulas. In the first part we examined subjective students' opinions on the usefulness of selected physics formulas from the school curriculum. No we concentrated on eye-tracking experiments. Students have assessed 16 of the most important physics formulas, chosen by physics teachers. For deeper understanding of student's choices on eye-tracking has been conducted. For 52 students divided on two groups: not participating in school competitions in physics and other natural sciences named “ordinary students” and participating in these competitions named “extraordinary students”, a relationship was observed between their eyes’ fixation time (divided into Area of Interest) on 16 displayed formulas and the frequency of recognizing these as useful. We compared also saccade duration time between these two groups of students. Physics contest winners found over 60% of these formulas useful, whereas the average students’ result was less than 30%. We observed a positive correlation between the number of eye-fixations on a given formula and the frequency of selection by the students as useful. Students that showed more interest in the selected subjects also perceived the areas of study presented by them to be much more useful to the society. It has also been concluded that the intention of choosing one’s profession within the area of a given subject depends on one’s interest in the subject.

Opis:
Eye-tracking is a group of various techniques in which eye movements are recorded usually in order to get information about the path composed of gaze points. Eye-tracking used to be a unusual technique, mainly because of lack of suitable equipment. Currently eye-tracking has become more available because the cost has become Iower and it is not as time-consuming. Eye-tracking has become the focus of attention of psychology, medicine and ergonomics. It is also used in market research and research projects on HCI Human - Computer Interaction. Eye--tracking is also used by cartographers. While reading a map, the part we concentrate our attention on is most effectively analyzed, i.e. the part whose image is located in the fovea centralis during fixation. The image changes together with saccades (fast eye movements) when we focus our attention on other parts of the map. Through employing the eye--tracking technique we can follow the cognitive proc-ess accompanying map reading. It can be determined for instance what catches the reader's attention first, what is the sequence of viewing the elements of map content, when the reader looks at the legend, etc. Although first attempts at using the eye-tracking technique in cartography go back to 1970s cartographers lost interest in it later on. However, at the beginning of the new millennium a rise in the amount of publications can be noted. The generał aim of doing research with the eye--tracking technique is to get deeper insight into how maps are used, e.g. indicate typical visual behaviors. Sometimes, the goal is to find out about behavior during visual searching of information on a map. An interesting approach connected to behavior is research in which the main goal is to recognize differences between the visual behavior of professional map users and the visual behavior of amateurs. It is not easy to specify if the results of eye-tracking research can be used in map design or whether they discover anything new. It is certain however that using the technique in research can shed new light on popu-lar opinions thus providing a strong scientific basis for arguments or strengthen knowledge. In cartography eye-tracking can be especially used in research on interactive maps, their usage advantages and interface designing. Sometimes the aim of research is to compare cartographic elaborations of similar content and functionality but different graphic form and distribution of interactive interface elements. In the development of cartography, research with the use of eye-tracking has arranged, verified and set-tled knowledge. What used to be only assumed (especially when we were interested in the behavior during visual map analysis) can now be verified using eye--tracking. Despite the progress in the technique of eye-tracking and its usage in cartography, many problems still need to be looked into. An important issue is the difficulty of interpreting the information about visual map analysis behavior. Thanks to eye-tracking we are able to determine which parts of a map are looked at, but it is still hard to indicate factors conditioning this behavior. Database (BDO) is presented for both systems in the form of a sequence of generalization activities and respective operators and generalization algorithms. Thus prepared database has been verified by a series of research experiments covering settiement generalization and road network in Lower Silesian and Łódź voivodships. In order to adapt the generalization process to the requirements of smali scale publications new tools and algorithms have been designed or modified for the systems, which improves correctness of generalization of particular thematic layers.

Opis:
To give an appropriate description of fixational eye movements is a very challenging problem. Over the years authors tried to describe the movements through different methods. The time series of the movements exhibit very characteristic behavior, which is the visible impulses. This may suggest the heavy-tailed distribution behind the data. In this paper on stochastic description of fixational eye movements, the α-stable distribution as the most important member of heavy-tailed family of distributions is proposed. The fixational eye movements together with head movement of both eyes of eight healthy subjects were measured and recorded by use of own designed optical system. Further analysis of changes in position of the pupil center in two-dimensional plane was performed. It was shown that head movement has very small impact on values of stability parameter α of fixational eye movements. The α-stable based analysis can be useful in better understanding of the character of the eye globe dynamics.

The text presents an extract of an eye tracking verification study of the reading process in children with the risk of dyslexia. A case study analysis was used. The study revealed differences and irregularities between children with the risk of dyslexia and their peers in areas such as: number of fixations, length of fixations and length of observation of text. It was observed that the intensity of difficulties associated with the reading skills does not have to be proportional to the irregularities of the movements of the eye balls (for instance, serious decrease in the reading skills with insignificant improper movements of the eyes) but visual perception of the text being processed varies, which is graphically presented in the text.
