Opis:
This paper is an attempt to use the sophistication index developed by Lall et al. (2006) to analyze the export structures of Turkey and Poland. Export sophistication index is calculated to determine the sophistication levels of each industry at the 3 digit ISIC system. These index values are then used to compare export sophistications of Poland and Turkey. The findings indicate that export structures of the two countries were similar with regard to their sophistication levels in 1985, Poland’s position improved and Turkey’s position declined in the last two decades. Today Poland is exporting relatively more sophisticated manufactured products than Turkey.

Opis:
In the era of globalization, international trade plays a role that is increasing in importance as a factor shaping not only individual economies, but also of the world economy. This makes an examination of its determinants important and relevant. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between financing in a form of export insurance and international trade. The study focuses on selected economies in the region of Central Europe. These countries include: Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Hungary. Given the lack of data, two Scandinavian countries have been added: Denmark and Sweden. Results obtained with an econometric model show that the higher the value of short-term export insurance to a given economy, the higher is the value of imports of that economy. This means that access to financing plays a significant role in determining of international exchange. This result should direct the attention of economists and economic policymakers towards the quality of the fi nancial system as a factor contributing to the size of international trade.

This paper investigates the nature and pattern of export specialization in Lithuania. The aim of this paper is to estimate the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization under the existing conditions. Seeking to define the nature and pattern of export specialization, the basic methods of export specialization measurement and the nature and pattern of export specialization in trade between Lithuania and the EU are determined. For measurement of the pattern of export specialization in Lithuania two approaches are adopted. The index of export specialization is used to determine the pattern of comparative advantage. Secondly, trade dissimilarity index is used to predict structural changes in Lithuanian exports. Using these methods of measurement and standard international trade classification (SITC), the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization was determined. It was found that the biggest flows from Lithuania to the EU are in the following groups: food, drink and tobacco; raw materials; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. These calculation results show the main directions of nature and pattern of export specialization. This research could be useful for preparing and forecasting the possibilities of Lithuanian export development.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to test the export-led growth hypothesis for the Republic of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is an oil-exporting country and the share of oil and oil products in total exports is 94.78 percent in 2009. In this paper, the export-led growth hypothesis is tested for Azerbaijan using cointegration and error correction model techniques for the 1996-2008 period. Long-run and short-run relationship was found between real GDP, and exports and imports. The results fail to find any support for the proposition that exports Granger cause GDP. However, real GDP Granger causes exports. The findings of this study showed that export-led growth hypothesis is not valid for Azerbaijan.

Opis:
According to the International Energy Agency, at least until 2030, coal will be the primary raw material for the production of electricity. Therefore, a growth of investments aimed at increasing production and its efficiency, as well as reduction of costs through further mechanization of the mining process, is also expected. This will be realized mainly in the following countries: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Colombia, Australia, South Africa. The situation of mining equipment manufacturers is highly dependent on the situation in the mining industry, in Poland – especially in the coal mining industry, which prospects are weaker than global. Production has been decreasing. The latest proposal for the new EU climate and energy policy, presented by the European Commission on the January 22nd, may become another major threat to this industry. The number of Polish suppliers of machinery, equipment and mining services is estimated at approximately 200. About 40 of them produce specialized mining equipment. The largest, most experienced and recognizable (also abroad) and offering the widest range of products and services are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange capital groups: Famur SA, Kopex SA, Fasing SA and Bumech SA. The advantage of many foreign companies over the Polish ones in the competition in new markets lies in the size of the former. Polish industry of machinery and mining equipment is in fact still more fragmented and diverse than the American or the Western European.

Ethiopia has one of the largest livestock populations in Africa. In 2016-2017, the share of live animals, leather, and meat in the total export of the country reached 9.6%. This paper aims to identify the determinants of the export of Ethiopian livestock products by means of vector autoregressive and vector error correction models. Multivariate time series is used to model the association between the products of the Ethiopian livestock export included in the study. Vector autoregressive and vector error correction models are used for modelling and inference. The results indicated the existence of a long term correlation between the volume of live animals, meat and leather exports. The volume of meat export is significantly affected by a lag occurring in the export of live animals in the short-run. Therefore, 3.7% of the shortrun imbalance in the volume of leather export is adjusted each quarter. It is suggested that the exporters of livestock products should properly utilise the Ethiopian livestock resources. On the other hand, the government should offer different forms of support to exporters, especially those focusing on exporting value-added products.

The first difficulty in liberalization agricultural trade stemmed from his position as the United States and the application of ny quantitative restriction. But then the main reason for the exclusion of agriculture from the negotiations was the first position of the EWG, and then of the European communities. Community countries already in the mid-sixties introduced protectionist common agricultural policy (CAP: Common Agricultural Policy). Generally speaking, liberal trade policy brings benefits in comparison with protectionism. This was reflected in the main principles of the international trade policy in the framework of the WTO and the EU. Also the introduction and opening of the Polish economy was made possible thanks to the progressive liberalization of this policy. The most important were tariff reductions resulting from the agreements of the WTO and of the Europe agreement with the EU.

Opis:
Research background: The differences in the legal structures, tax rates, and cultural-linguistic issues of various countries have always been a significant concern for SMEs in their exporting activities and internationalization processes. However, since firm-level characteristics might provide some advantages or disadvantages in their operations, their perceptions of export impediments might vary across size, age, and sector groups. Purpose of the article: This paper investigates the perceptions of export impediments by 408 larger-smaller, older-younger, and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian SMEs in a country-based perspective. Methods: The researchers use the random sampling method to create research samples and employ an internet-mediated questionnaire to collect the research data. The researchers use both Independent Sample T-test and ANOVA analyses to find differences between size, age, and sector groups. Findings & value added: While the differences exist between the perceptions of Slovakian larger-smaller and manufacturing-nonmanufacturing SMEs regarding cultural differences, the perceptions of legal and tax-related export impediments by SMEs do not differ depending on their age, size, and sector. This paper contributes to the literature by confirming various perceptions of SMEs in different countries and different characteristics regarding export obstacles and providing an entity-specific and international scope that policymakers and SMEs can benefit from. Awareness of the policymakers regarding the results of this paper that includes differences and similarities in SMEs' perceptions of export barriers might make them have close interactions with SMEs to reduce SMEs' concerns regarding their export risks. On the other hand, SMEs that are aware of the results of this paper can be more interested in having a broader network that includes close relationships not only with intermediary firms, but also with governments to overcome the export impediments.

In this paper, we study the export performance determinants of firms in selected MENA countries, both jointly and separately, as well as compare them with the performance of firms from countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The analysis is based on information about individual firms found in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and World Bank Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) V database, covering the period 2011-2014. We estimate the probability of exports, while controlling for country- and sector-specific effects, using the probit model. We find that, in both groups of countries, similar variables affect firm export performance. Our empirical results obtained for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and CEE countries indicate that the probability of exporting is positively related to the level of productivity, firm size, spending on research and development (R&D), the share of university graduates in productive employment and the internationalization of firms. State ownership and the perception of corruption by firms are mostly not statistically significant. The results obtained for the two groups of countries are statistically not very different, but enough to have some policy implications, while results for particular countries and subgroups of countries reveal a large degree of heterogeneity.

Opis:
The work is aimed at analysing the state and prospects of implementing the export potential of the agrarian sector of Ukraine, the structure of which is based on the principles of transition from the abstract to the concrete. The study begins with the definition of factors that shape the export opportunities of the agrarian sector, namely: the quality of the factors of agricultural production (objects of labour, means of labour); the branch structure of agricultural production; the state of the systems of certification and quality control of export products; the diversification of markets; the access to financial resources; the level of the marketing support of export; the mechanisms of the realization of the state export policy; the state of development of agro-logistics. It has been proved that in the short term, the production components are not decisive in the processes of using and expanding the existing export potential of the national agrarian sector. In the modern conditions the state of logistics infrastructure is coming to the forefront. In the general problem of agro-logistics, the following levels are distinguished: micro-, meso-, macro-, and supranational. In each of them we have identified "the bottlenecks" of the process of building up export potential from the point of view of agro-logistics. The ways of increasing the export potential of the agrarian sector in Ukraine have been proposed. These include: the development of container transportation sphere; the creation of effective mechanisms for directing funds of united territorial communities for the development of regional logistics infrastructure; the reform of Ukrzaliznytsia (JSC „Ukrainian Railways”); the development of alternative variants of supply chains by improving the infrastructure of the automobile and river transport; the expansion of the representation of Ukraine in the world governmental and non-governmental organizations in order to protect the national trade interests; the formation of the system of training personnel capable of adapting to changing market conditions.
