Opis:
The paper reports a study examining which Big Five personality traits correlate with pronunciation attainment of students who had been offered systematic long-term explicit pronunciation-focused instruction. The participants were 47 English majors just finishing their one-year course of practical English phonetics at the University of Wrocław, Poland. The five personality traits were measured with the use of a Polish version of Goldberg’s instrument, i.e. IPIP-BFM-50 (Struś, Cieciuch, Rowiński, 2014). The personality traits were then correlated with the students’ pronunciation proficiency represented by their (1) phonological competence, (2) pronunciation of selected vocabulary, and (3) accuracy in pronunciation operationalised as correct production of selected segments, rhythm, and consistency in using a chosen native English accent (RP or GA) when reading aloud a short passage with focus on its meaning. All of the judged aspects of pronunciation were explicitly drawn attention to and practised during the course of phonetics. The results of correlation analyses revealed that Openness to experience and Conscientiousness were significantly and positively linked to pronunciation attainment, with the former showing moderate and large effect sizes, and the latter, small and moderate effect sizes.

Opis:
We analyse the accuracy of a deconvolution (inverse filtering) method in 1D and 2D periodic domains. The deconvolution is performed by applying the iterative van Cittert method using explicit and compact filters of the 2nd to 8th order. We consider cases in which an approximate inverse filter $ G_\alpha^{-1} $ formulated to deconvolve an original function from a filtered one $ ( \overline{f} = G \ast f ) $ is constructed based on: (a) $G$ the same as used to define $ \overline{f} = G \ast f $; (b) $ G $ different than the one used to define $ \overline{f} = G \ast f $. In case (a), the convergence rate of the deconvolution process is much better when compact filters are used. This is attributed to a flatter transfer function of this type of filter and thus a smaller deterioration of the input function $ \overline{f} $. Case (b) reflects a real situation in which the precise definition of a basic filter $G$ used in $ \overline{f} = G \ast f $ is unknown. We found that when $ G_\alpha^{-1} $ is formulated based on $G$ of a higher order than the one used to define $ \overline{f} $ the reconstructed function $ f^\ast = G_\alpha^{-1} \ast \overline{f} $ is suppressed compared to the original function $f$. On the other hand, the deconvolution process performed with the use of $ G_\alpha^{-1} $ defined based on $G$ of a lower order than the order of the basic filter significantly amplifies the reconstructed function $ f^\ast $. As a result, the function $ f^\ast $ contains more energy than the function $f$, especially in the range of small and high-frequency scales. This effect is particularly strong when explicit filters of different orders are used. The impact of the filter type in the practical application of deconvolution is demonstrated based on large eddy simulations (LES) of a 2D decaying homogenous turbulent flow. LES combined with an approximate deconvolution method (ADM) for the computation of sub-filter terms shows better accuracy than in the case when these terms are modelled using the classical Smagorinsky model or when they are neglected (no-model approach). This analysis consists of comparisons of the evolution of total energy, energy spectra, and higher-order moments (variance, skewness, kurtosis) of the velocity components and vorticity. We found that more accurate results are obtained when the deconvolution is performed using the explicit filters even if the deconvolution process based on the compact filters was found to converge faster in 1D and 2D test cases. Most likely this is because in the performed LES the explicit filters correspond better to an unknown filter induced by discretisation.

This is a study of the use of generic pronouns in Swedish as a second language (L2) by L1 Finnish immersion students. We compare two groups, 12-year-olds, and 15-year-olds, to see if there is a difference and to identify which the most challenging cases are in both groups. Norm deviations are compared to see if they mainly consist of overuse of generic pronouns or more formal aspects, such as the pronoun which is chosen, and the understanding of the relation between the generic subject, object, possessive and reflexive pronouns. Both groups use generic pronouns in the subject position in a manner which mostly follows the standard, and mainly have problems with possessive pronouns in connection to generic pronouns. It is possible that object generic pronouns would also be problematic, but there are none in our data. Generic pronouns are sometimes left out as subjects, which is ungrammatical in Swedish. There is also occasional overuse of man where it is not idiomatic, and some mixed forms with man and s-passive. Results show possible transfer from the first language (L1) of the learners, but less in the older group. Furthermore, there also appears to be transfer from L3 English, which our informants are learning at school. This seems more present in the older group.

The paper proposes a reflection on the construction of grammatical competence in French as L2. We argue that grammatical competence embraces implicit and explicit knowledge, and results from the complementarity of conscious functions, closely linked to analogy and intelligence, and unconscious functions strictly connected with intuition. In the article, we show that an approach guaranteeing communicative success is connected to teaching formal aspects of language combined with meaning. In the first part, we discuss the specificity of both types of grammatical knowledge and refer to the concept of « grammar of sense » by P. Charaudeau. In the second part, some exercises and communication tasks combining analytical thinking and sense-oriented intuitive thinking are proposed.

Opis:
Today, hybridity has become a topic of interest in translation, especially when it comes to translating literature from postcolonial contexts. This is, for instance, the case with Frenchspeaking African literature, where several authors embed a hybrid language in their writing, thus producing multilingual literary works. From a translation perspective, literary productions adopting this writing style expose the translator to a major challenge: translating not only from a single language into another, but also from two or more languages into another. The difficulty is compounded by the explicitness and implicitness of hybridity features. This article seeks to explore the explicitness and implicitness of (linguistic) hybridity in literature and its implication for translation. It uses French-speaking African literature to illustrate both concepts.

Blade vibrations in aircraft engines are a significant challenge that must be overcome during the design and development of modern turbine engines. Vibrations lead to cyclic displacements and result in alternating stress and strain in undesired environments (high temperatures, erosion, corrosion of the surface, etc.). Under resonance conditions, stress amplitudes can increase and exceed their safety limits, and in extreme cases, can lead to engine failure. One method to reduce resonance vibrations is to increase damping in the turbine assembly. This paper presents and describes vibration damping sources in the turbine, including aerodynamic, material, and friction damping. Additionally, typical damping values for each damping component are presented and compared.

Making mistakes is a natural part of learning process requiring correction; accordingly, corrective feedback is indispensable. On this ground, the present study compared the effects of mobile-mediated explicit and implicit corrective feedback on Iranian EFL learners’ use of English prepositions of manner and movement. To this end, the participants including 60 learners were randomly assigned to three groups of 20 individuals on WhatsApp application. These three groups included two experimental and one control groups. The treatment groups sat for a pre-test, received instruction on the errors under study, and practiced correcting them in response to the corrective feedback condition. Next, participants took immediate post-test and delayed post-test. The statistical analysis revealed that although the control group was more proficient than its experimental counterparts on the pre-test, their performance did not improve on immediate and delayed post-tests. However, both of the experimental groups significantly improved on immediate post-test and retained their gains on the delayed post-test. The pedagogical implication is provided for both teachers and learners.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to argue that the way explicitly communicated content is approached in leading pragmatic theories is flawed, since it is posited that explicature generation involves pragmatic enrichment of the decoded logical form of the utterance to full propositionality. This kind of enhancement postulated to underlie explicature generation appears to be theoretically inadequate and not to correspond to the psychological reality of utterance interpretation. Drawing on earlier critique of extant pragmatic positions on explicatures, mainly by Borg (2016) and Jary (2016), I add further arguments against modelling explicitly communicated import in the way leading verbal communication frameworks do. It is emphasized that the cognitively plausible theory of communicated meaning is compromised at the cost of theory-internal concerns.
Czerpiąc z wcześniejszej krytyki pojęcia eksplikatury, ukazanej w pracach Borg (2016) i Jary’ego (2016), artykuł przedstawia dodatkowe argumenty przeciwko modelowaniu treści przekazywanych wprost w sposób, w jaki robią to czołowe koncepcje pragmatyczne. Podkreśla się, że wiarygodna poznawczo teoria komunikacji werbalnej powinna właściwie oddawać naturę procesów przekazywania i odbioru znaczeń, a proponowane instrumentarium teoretyczne nie może ich zniekształcać.

The aim of this publication was to reconstruct the image of God that has been perpetuated in the German language through fixed collocations. Based on a methodological reflection, the author attempted to determine which of God’s attributes are conveyed in these expressions. Attempts were also made to identify the linguistic mechanisms that contributed to that process. The author concluded that the image of God present in German phraseology was clearly consistent with the biblical worldview. In the German language, God is depicted as someone good, just, trustworthy, but sometimes also wrathful and stern. According to the beliefs conveyed by the German language, God dwells in heaven, from which He rules over the world as God almighty. God is portrayed explicitly or implicitly, often through metaphorical and metonymic structures. God’s attributes are frequently portrayed in a language whose modality is full of reverence and supplication and is indicative of man’s dependence on Him, as well as through the use of exclusively adulatory vocabulary.

The studies devoted to the so-called good language learners that emerged in the 1970s (Rubin 1975) reveal that efficient learners fall back on an abundant and highly individualised array of techniques and strategic behaviours related to and employed while learning. The well-known taxonomies by Oxford (1990) and O’Malley and Chamot (1990) gave rise to analyses and investigations in the field of learner autonomy and self-development, also in pronunciation learning/teaching. As has been corroborated by empirical studies (Oxford 2001a; Oxford 2001b; Chamot, 2004) strategy training contributes to the increase in overall proficiency as well as to a number of invaluable benefits such as enhanced motivation, greater self-efficacy, anxiety reduction and more positive attitudes. Although studies dedicated to the relationship between learning strategies and pronunciation are still in their infancy, there are a number of investigations that set the directions for further research and development (Peterson 2000; Pawlak 2008; Pawlak and Oxford 2018). The paper presents results of a pilot study conducted in a secondary school that aimed at observing how learners develop pronunciation strategies as a result of regular pronunciation input and feedback from the teacher. It addresses a tentative assumption that explicit pronunciation training may contribute to the enhanced strategy use and consequently to better oral performance. Detecting and naming the strategies employed by the learners as well as selecting the most effective ones for more explicit application aided and boosted the learners’ awareness and confidence, which was confirmed by data obtained from questionnaires and from participant observation.

The social stigma of cancer is a powerful source of stereotyping and prejudice against people affected by oncological disorders. Two cross-sectional studies attempted to (1) provide a formal and content characteristic of the stereotype of teenage cancer patient and (2) analyze explicit and implicit prejudice against them. In the first study, 2,370 middle school students proposed open-ended descriptions and quantified 50 attributes representing physical appearance, cognitive, task-oriented, social, and emotional functioning of the teenage cancer patient. In the second study, 207 undergraduate students of education completed the Implicit Association Test, which contrasted the teenage cancer patient with a teenager as a reference category. Content analysis of 11,191 open-ended descriptions and exploratory factor analysis of 50 attributes showed that teenage cancer patients were characterized in the emotional, social, and physical appearance domain. The IAT revealed that teenagers with cancer automatically induced moderate negative prejudice not linked with similarly negative explicit prejudice. Negative explicit and implicit prejudice suggests that teenagers with cancer may be omitted or disfavored by classmates and teachers, therefore they require special treatment in school and out-of-school environments. The findings and their practical implications were discussed in light of theories of stigmatization, stereotyping, and prejudice against cancer patients.

Auxetic structures exhibit unusual behavior not only when subjected to static loads but also in case of dynamic events. However, their response to transient loads still requires further research. In this article, the blast resistance of auxetic and non-auxetic sandwich plates was compared using the finite element method. The first stage of works, that consisted of the analyses of plates with homogenized core with different values of Poisson’s ratio subjected to blast load, proved that auxetic core may increase the resistance to this kind of load. In the next step, two sandwich plates were compared - one with auxetic anti-tetrachiral core and one with a non-auxetic hexagonal honeycomb core. Obtained results indicate that auxetic plate has superior blast resistance when compared with the regular sandwich panel.

Thanking, belonging to expressive speech acts, according to the classification by Searle (1969), can be regarded as worth exploring due to the fact that gratitude, as a component of value systems, is as the fundamental emotion underlying social relations, and thus reflected in the language, especially fixed expressions, crucial for linguistic politeness. The aim of the present research is to compare explicit and implicit formulas (as referred to by Kerbrat-Orecchioni 2001) of the act of thanking in French and Polish. The examined material is composed of exemplary utterances retrieved from blogs, social networking sites, and internet fora. The methodology used includes studies on speech act theory (Austin 1962), typology of speech acts (Searle 1969), as well as research papers on language politeness by Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1996, 2001) and gratitude (SieradzkaBaziur 2017). Moreover, the author refers to comparative studies on politeness acts conducted up to now (Romero 2000, Rădulescu and Scurtu 2003, Perez 2005, Grossmann and Krzyżanowska 2018, Meng 2012). The author classifies collected explicit and implicit utterances, juxtaposing French and Polish examples and providing an analysis based on pragmatic parameters. As a result, the author creates a corpus of utterances used for expressing gratitude along with a study on diverse thanking formulas in both languages.
