Opis:
Today, hybridity has become a topic of interest in translation, especially when it comes to translating literature from postcolonial contexts. This is, for instance, the case with Frenchspeaking African literature, where several authors embed a hybrid language in their writing, thus producing multilingual literary works. From a translation perspective, literary productions adopting this writing style expose the translator to a major challenge: translating not only from a single language into another, but also from two or more languages into another. The difficulty is compounded by the explicitness and implicitness of hybridity features. This article seeks to explore the explicitness and implicitness of (linguistic) hybridity in literature and its implication for translation. It uses French-speaking African literature to illustrate both concepts.

Conventional metal manufacturing techniques are suitable for mass production. However, cheaper and faster alternatives are preferred for small batch sizes and individualized components. Directed energy deposition (DED) processes allow depositing metallic material in almost arbitrary shapes. They are characterized by cyclic heat input, hence heating and cooling every point in the workpiece several times. This temperature history leads to distribution of mechanical properties, distortions, residual stresses or even fatigue properties in the part. To avoid experimental trial-and-error optimization, different methods are available to simulate DED processes. Currently, the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is the most competitive DED process. In this work, a simulation method for the WAAM process is established and validated, which should be capable to calculate global effects (e.g. distortions, residual stresses) of real WAAM-processes with duration of hours and thousands of weld beads. The addition of beads and layers is simulated by the element birth and death technique. The elements are activated according to the movements of the heat source (arc). In this paper, the influence of the time step, the mesh size and the material properties of the inactive elements in hybrid implicit / explicit and fully implicit solutions are evaluated with respect to the computation time and stability. This investigation concludes several recommendations for AM-modelling. For example, a low Young’s modulus (100 N/mm2) for the inactive elements show nearly no influences on the welding simulation, but introduces numerical instabilities in case of multiple welding beads. The Young’s modulus should be increased to 1.000 N/mm2 for small mesh-sizes, small step-sizes and many beads, even when it introduces unwanted stresses.

Offshore platforms are exposed to waves slamming event. Waves hitting the columns with a high velocity are in many cases the design criteria for column structure. This paper focuses on the analysis of wave slamming on floating platform column. Significant for wave slamming pressure is load history, which is usually based on model test. Wave slamming loads were defined on all four walls of column to assess the worst place. For south wall of column three positions exposed to slamming loads between elevation 21.000 (SWL) and elevation 35.500 were checked. Dynamic analysis has been performed with nonlinear FEM program ABAQUS /explicit. The steel was modeled as an elastic-plastic material with isotropic hardening.

Opis:
Explicit filtering with a smooth shape is one of approaches adopted in large eddy simulations (LES). The present work investigates the application of an explicit high order smooth (HOS) filter for the LES of a fully developed turbulent channel flow. The Crank-Nicolson scheme for time marching and second-order finite-volume schemes for spatial derivatives were implemented in this investigation. Implicit filtering, together with the Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model, and explicit filtering, along with a HOS filter were studied in a fully turbulent channel flow. In this study, explicit HOS filtering with an explicit filter width to grid size ratio of 2.0 was in agreement with the available direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. However, the mean velocity profile in the streamwise direction was underestimated, and the turbulence intensity in the streamwise direction improved compared to other directions. Moreover, turbulence stresses were well predicted using the mixed SGS and sub-filter stress (SFS) models and applying the HOS filter as an explicit filter.
Jawne filtrowanie typu gładkiego jest jedną z metod stosowanych w symulacjach wielkowirowych (tzw. LES). W pracy opisano zastosowanie filtra wysokiego rzędu o charakterystyce gładkiej (HOS) do symulacji wielkowirowej w pełni rozwiniętego turbulentnego przepływu w kanale.

The focus of the paper is on lying in verbal communication. The main aim of the paper is to examine the act of lying with reference to the explicit/implicit distinction in the cognitive, relevance-theoretic, model of utterance comprehension (cf. Sperber and Wilson [1986] 1995; 2004; Wilson and Sperber 2002; 2012), which rejected the maxim of truthfulness for the sake of the Principle of Relevance. The paper views lying in the context of interpersonal communication, as a pragmatic act and a linguistic strategy intentionally employed by the speaker to manipulate the hearer’s interpretation of an utterance. Since encoded linguistic meaning (logical form) falls far short of determining the proposition expressed by an utterance (explicature) and its implicatures, there is a potential for a liar to achieve his/her goal by influencing the interpretation process at different stages of pragmatic enrichment. Accordingly, an attempt is made in the paper to categorize lies by placing them along the explicit-implicit continuum, depending on the type of pragmatic task that is to lead the hearer to a false belief.

Internet is an information and communication environment. The Internet replaces the reference offices of airports, train stations, shops, pharmacies. The Internet replaces libraries by placing on the Internet the main encyclopedias, dictionaries, various directories, branch databases and much more. TV channels and newspapers create their own websites, because the number of online audiences is constantly increasing. The network version of the publication due to advertising banners on the site can be more profitable and promising than its paper or television analogue-source. Social networks and blogs are developing and gaining popularity. They differ from traditional broadcast media not only in their interactivity, but the lexical filling and syntactic processing of the information offered. In addition, one of the special features of network communication is its metalanguage. Purpose is to characterize explicit and implicit manifestations of metalanguage reflexion of network vocabulary. The task: to describe the explicit symbols that are typical for network communication; language phenomena of implication in the network vocabulary. Methods. Descriptive and comparative. Results. The peculiarity of the network vocabulary is undeniable, since such lexicon is inherent in explicit and implicit meta-linguistic reflection. Language peculiarity of network communication covers all levels of language – phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactic. In addition, graphics and spelling of the network language deserve attention. Such uniqueness is dictated by the activation of metalanguage reflexion.

The present study explored the effects of explicit and systematic teaching of morphemic analysis on vocabulary learning and comprehension. The reading class taught by the researcher was purposely taught the most common (30) prefixes and the most common (30) roots. Following fourteen 50-minute lessons, students were tested on their ability to recall the meanings of words used to teach the morphemic analysis skills, to derive meanings for new words that contained taught morphemic elements, and to comprehend text containing new words. The results indicated that (a) there was an immediate and delayed effect of morphemic analysis for lesson words, and (b) there was evidence that a morphemic approach improved students’ vocabulary and, consequently, their comprehension. The findings of this study provide support for the implementation of a morphemic approach for vocabulary instruction.

Research background: Endeavouring to develop healthy societies is a primary goal in many countries. As smoking is a major problem of public health, lowering the extent of smoking is one of the conditions for developing a healthy society. Based on the research revealing that the pairing of the product with negative stimuli enhances the possibility of negative reaction to the product as negative stimulus transfers it’s meaning to the product, tobacco packaging was labelled with negative smoking-related pictures illustrating the danger of smoking. Nevertheless, the extent of smoking is still large in many countries. Hence, the effect of negative smoking-related pictures has been the subject of intense debate within the scientific community. Purpose of the article: The aim of this research is to determine the effect of negative smoking-related pictures on the both implicit and explicit attitude toward smoking. Methods: For the purpose of determining the effect of negative smoking-related pictures on the both implicit and explicit attitude toward smoking, Implicit Association Test and questionnaire survey were provided. The questionnaire was elaborated based on the analysis and synthesis of scientific literature. Findings & Value added: The theoretical analysis substantiated the influence of attitude toward the product on consumer purchase decisions. Nevertheless, people do not always want to reveal their opinion, hence traditional marketing research methods for measuring explicit attitude are not sufficient as they are often not objective. Therefore, neuromarketing research methods complement traditional marketing research methods by providing more objectivity. Consequently, the Implicit Association Test and traditional questionnaire research are applied for the empirical research, revealing the effect of negative smoking-related pictures on the both implicit and explicit attitude toward smoking. The recommendations for the usage of negative smoking-related pictures on purpose to influence attitude toward smoking and consumer purchase behaviour are substantiated.

AIMS: The primary goal of the presented research was to investigate the memory effects of implicit negation, conveyed using implicatures, as compared to explicit negation. We also speculated that implicit negation might require more cognitive effort. METHODS: Three experiments were conducted (total N = 181), in which participants were presented with a description containing implicit or explicit negation, followed by a memory recognition test of items present, negated or not mentioned in the description. We manipulated the pace at which the description was presented (own pace vs. fixed) and whether participants were informed about the upcoming recognition test. RESULTS: We found no differences between explicit and implicit negation in the number of false alarms to negated and not mentioned items, response times or time spent reading the source material. Bayesian analyses indicated a 90% probability that there were no differences in the number of false alarms between explicit and implicit negation. CONCLUSIONS: Implicit and explicit negation lead to a similar quality of recognition, and seem to require a similar amount of time to process, indicating comparable cognitive effort.
