    The article attempts to present Étienne Gilson’s approach to Thomas Aquinas’ existential interpretation of being. The French thinker’s apprehension of Aquinas’ system is characterized by accentuating existential perspective within the framework of the analysis of the structure of being. Gilson supported existential Thomism and, consequently, strongly emphasized the role of existence (esse) for being real. The French philosopher was of opinion that the existence of being should be depicted by means of existential judgments that affirm real and specific existence of beings. According to Gilson, the existential judgment of the affirmation-oriented being is the starting point for metaphysics.

    The aim of this article is to indicate certain ideas common to existential Thomism, Phenomenology, and the Philosophy of Dialogue. While the often polemical philosophical literature more frequently emphasizes the discrepancies between these philosophical schools, a closer look, which takes into account the current state of philosophy and its relationship to dynamically developing science (especially natural science), reveals several common elements. Despite their differences, manifested especially in their use of different conceptual apparatuses, all three philosophical schools point to the existence of primary, irreducible experiences that are inaccessible to science. These experiences indicate the primacy of the personal world over the naturalistic representation of the world (reality) that emerges from natural science.

    The aim of this article is to present and reconstruct the existential arguments formulated by thomists in opposition to ontology as pursued by phenomenologists. The entire discussion is presented against the general background of a critique of phenomenology as a way of pursuing philosophy. The article presents the most important arguments before evaluating them, taking into account their historical, subject-specific, and methodological contexts. Attention is paid to the significance of this discussion in shaping the philosophical dialogue between thomism and phenomenology, and with respect to the current relevance of the issues addressed. For some thomists, this dialogue has led to rethinking a number of metaphysical questions (e.g. the structure of intentional being). It is also pointed out that contemporary thomism and phenomenological ontology share a common opponent: namely, naturalism in its various guises. In relation to this, a deeper level of cooperation between thomism and phenomenological ontology is also advocated here as the only way to establish a meaningful debate with naturalism, given that the strong hold exercised by the latter – even at the level of how resources are administratively assigned – is such as to push in the direction of eliminating classical metaphysics and phenomenology altogether.
    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i rekonstrukcja argumentów sformułowanych przez tomistów egzystencjalnych przeciwko ontologii uprawianej przez fenomenologów. Całość dyskusji zaprezentowano na ogólnym tle krytyki fenomenologii jako sposobu uprawiania filozofii. W artykule zaprezentowano najważniejsze argumenty, następnie oceniono ich wartość merytoryczną, biorąc pod uwagę kontekst historyczny, przedmiotowy i metodologiczny. Zwrócono uwagę na wartość tej dyskusji dla kształtowania dialogu filozoficznego między tomizmem a fenomenologią oraz na aktualność podejmowanej problematyki. Dialog ten u niektórych tomistów doprowadził do nowego przemyślenia szeregu kwestii metafizyki tomistycznej (np. struktury bytu intencjonalnego). Wskazano również, że współcześnie tomizm i ontologia fenomenologiczna mają wspólnego przeciwnika jakim jest naturalizm w różnych wariantach. W związku z tym rekomendowano, że między tomizmem a ontologią fenomenologiczną powinna zachodzić głębsza współpraca, gdyż tylko wtedy będzie można podjąć sensowną debatę z naturalizmem, który sięgając nawet po środki administracyjne stara się wprost wyeliminować tak metafizykę klasyczną, jak i fenomenologię.

    Opis:
    Étienne Gilson and Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec notice essential elements that determine philosophical realism. Such discovery allows a philosopher to build realistic concept of object, method and objective of metaphysical cognition thus standing against idealistic tendencies. Realistic object of metaphysical cognition is characterized by realism (intelligibility, self-evidence, extrasubjectiveness), universalism (unity and pluralism), neutralism (beings constituted in the existence considered as a real element of cognition). Realistic method of cognition according to Krąpiec and Gilson has to reject irrational understanding of common sense, abstractionism and cartesianism, while making use of thomistic understanding of common sense, existential judgements and metaphysical separation. Realistic objective of metaphysical cognition is oriented on cognition of causality, cognition of the first cause, understanding of the four Aristotle's causes, recta ratio and recta voluntas and analogous cognition. Due to determinants of realism mentioned before, it is possible to practice thomistic philosophy based on riches of the world given in the cognition.

    The concept of existence (esse) as an act of making realistic and actual individual being describes the basic feature of Consequential Thomism which refers to all possible philosophical analysis from the topic of existence (esse), because existence (esse) is the first and initiating principle of being. Professor Gogacz claims that the beginning of the modification of depictions the issue of esse in the context of Existential Thomism is published in book Istnieć i poznawać in 1969. Theses of this book also are found in the script about philosophy of being (1973) entitled Ważniejsze zagadnienia metafizyki. The most mature formula of Consequential Thomism is in the Elementarz metafizyki (1987). Some topics were developed in details in the articles that also are in the following books: Historia filozofii w poszukiwaniu realizmu (2011) and W kierunku tomizmu konsekwentnego (2012). The analysis of these texts allows to separate ten topics connected with the problem of esse: 1) act of existence’s characteristic, 2) types of acts of existence, 3) making realistic and actual as an act of existence’s ‘action’, 4) the issue of Ipsum Esse Subsistens, 5) the problem of not independent being (accident) of act of being (ipsum esse), 6) the issue of transcendentals, 7) the knowledge of the existence (esse), 8) the issue of creatio esse and conservatio esse 9) the order of thesis in metaphysics, 10) the historical and philosophical aspects of the modification of Thomism which led to its consistent version. In Istnieć i poznawać M. Gogacz represents an Existential Thomism and he is influenced by thought of M. A. Krąpiec. Elementarz metafizyki is the most mature version of Consequential Thomism. According it Consequential Thomism is characterized by: 1) Recognition of statements of Avicenna’s philosophy and taking them out from Existential Thomism; 2) Understanding of existence (esse) as a created principle which initiate an individual being; 3) The experience essential principles in verbum cordis; 4) Application the essential order of causes and results with consistent notice of pluralism; 5) Distinguishing the relationship connected with esse and the relationship connected with essentia and joining the experience of ipsum esse with relationship connected with esse and joining experience of unity of esse-principles with essential relationship; 6) Using the depiction of essence (essentia) permeated by existence (esse), what should be understanding as a subsistentia, in the issue of person.

    The article aims at presenting the life and work of Étienne Gilson (1884–1978)—a historian of philosophy, medievalist, renewer of the scholastic tradition, proponent of a return to the original doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, and philosopher. It is focused on selected areas of Gilson’s philosophical interest, such as: medieval philosophy, the history of philosophy, existential Thomism, atheism, literature and art. In the final analysis, Gilson appears as a firm advocate of philosophical realism which makes it possible to find a way out of contradictory explanations of the world, and allows man to live in openness to the voice of God’s revelation that constantly flows from reality.

    The aim of the article is the forgotten dispute regarding the world-view value of Thomism, taking place in the early 1960s in the Polish Catholic press. I attempt to present and evaluate the theses and arguments of both sides (critics as well as advocates of Thomism). My claim is that the dispute anticipated the loud discussion with Thomism initiated by J. Tischner in the 1970s and designated the areas of confrontation, as well as, the content and the character of the arguments for and against Thomism.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest zapomniany spór na temat światopoglądowej wartości tomizmu, toczący się na początku lat sześćdziesiątych XX wieku w polskiej prasie katolickiej. Próbuję przedstawić tezy i argumenty obu stron oraz dokonać ich oceny. Twierdzę, że spór ten antycypował głośną dyskusję z tomizmem, podjętą przez J. Tischnera w latach siedemdziesiątych – wyznaczył obszary tej konfrontacji oraz treść i charakter argumentacji za i przeciw.

    In this paper the author recalls his meetings with J.F. Drewnowski, which took place near Warsaw. Drewnowski and others form the so-called Krakow circle (J. Salamucha, I.M. Bocheński, and also B. Sobociński were supported by J. Łukasiewicz and under the patronage of K. Michalski) intended to develop a program for improving Thomism by means of logic. After the war, the school of philosophy at the Catholic University of Lublin would be involved in its development, but over time it adopted a more and more critical approach. This is especially true of M.A. Krąpiec, the key Polish existential Thomist. The logician and methodologist S. Kamiński was less radical in his criticism, whereas J. Kalinowski maintained his logical approach. The author of this article, who is a member of the Lublin School of Philosophy, takes this opportunity to raise questions, make comparative remarks, and formulate general considerations.
    Autor wspomina swoje podwarszawskie spotkania z J.F. Drewnowskim. Współtworzył on przed wojną program logicznej melioracji tomizmu, koło krakowskie: J. Salamucha, I.M. Bocheński, a także B. Sobociński, ze wsparciem J. Łukasiewicza i patronatem K. Michalskiego. W filozofii Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego nawiązywano do tego po wojnie, jednak z czasem co raz bardziej krytycznie: najbardziej M.A. Krąpiec czołowy polski tomista egzystencjalny, mniej radykalnie logik i metodolog S. Kamiński; J. Kalinowski nadal „logizował”. Daje to okazję autorowi, adeptowi lubelskiej szkoły filozofii klasycznej do pewnych zapytań, porównawczych uwag i refleksji.

    The most original theory in anthropology and ethics of a founder of consequential Thomism – Mieczysław Gogacz – is a theory of personal existential relations. He distinguishes three personal existential relations: love, faith and hope, that while being shaped and developed in shaping and developing in person circle become a source of their humanism and metanoia. On foundation of these relations a family as a union of people related with personal relations is constituting. Personal relations are family home, that protects its members from negative influence of culture, which not always protects people. In the face of contemporary challenges of family, it seems that Mieczysła Gogacz’s proposal is a remedy for many problems, which family has to deal with.

    This article introduces the life and work of Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec (1921-2008)—a Polish philosopher, theologian, humanist, co-founder of the Lublin Philosophical School, rector of the Catholic University of Lublin, initiator and chairman of the scientific committee of The Universal Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Krąpiec created a coherent philosophical system that, by a metaphysical explanation, encompassed the whole of reality that is accessible to human cognition. According to the author, Krąpiec’s philosophy is the greatest achievement in classical philosophy in Poland and in the world in the twentieth century, both with respect to its comprehensive scope and its meritorious importance; for the vision of the world that it reveals shows not only the human person’s unity and harmony with the reality that surrounds him, but also his openness to a connection with the transcendent Absolute.
