Opis:
The article presents the emergence of the exhibition industry in Poland as an effect of a social and economic transformation, which took place in late 1980s and early 1990s. Several newly established enterprises started to learn the specificity of exhibition industry and to compete with the Poznań International Fair. Lack of professionalism, clear procedures and business reliability often led to misunderstandings and conflicts. Establishing Polish Trade Fair Corporation (PTFC) in 1993 had started the process of setting situation of the industry in order but it did not solve some of the problems. The key problems still regard ethical issues. Although the ethical code of PTFC established rules of just competition, their efficiency depends mostly on their honest abiding. The article presents various examples of breaking the rules and major fields of conflict in the exhibition industry in Poland. In 2007 PTFC was replaced by newly established Polish Chamber of Exhibition Industry (PCEI). Its major challenges are verification of experience of almost twenty years of the exhibition industry in Poland and proposing new version of Ethical Code, so that the representatives of the industry respect it.

The paper highlights how the exhibition of design of urban rationalist spaces in Varese and Brescia called “Prospicĕre” tackled the topic starting from an idea coherently up to the results, inviting to 'look ahead'. This attitude not only as a physical action, but also as a stimulus to encourage the entrance of research on urban representation into the new channels of digital communication and networking, in order to transform architectural exhibitions into the tools for a cultural dissemination of architectural design. That is the path to join architectural heritage, communication and digital tools.

The text discusses the practice of the Swiss art historian and curator Harald Szeemann (1933– 2005), based on the example of two exhibitions: Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form, organised at Kunsthalle Bern in 1969, and A-Historische Klanken held at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1988. Drawing upon existing research as well as material from the archive of Harald Szeemann, the article focuses on Szeemann’s innovative approach to the concept of group exhibition and museum display. Szeemann’s curatorial practice was not only concerned with challenging existing models for displaying contemporary art, but also with re-inventing the position of the art institution, whose he saw as extending beyond the exhibition hall as the setting in which to show self-contained artworks, and the museum as a site of self-regulated production of knowledge. It was by contesting these paradigms that Harald Szeemann paved the way for the birth of the profession of art curator as it is known today

Science objects need a permanent theatre in the University? In a multidisciplinary and multicampus university is it a good solution to think the development of collections by the creation of a Museum? An alternative would be access to the collections of successive, partial and temporary manner, in other words the choice of Nomadism - the concept of Nomadism involving small movements that renew the interest of the place. We will study the conditions to attract diverse audiences and to keep a character of event for these temporary exhibitions in various premises. Thus, we will try to define a concept of academic, neither virtual nor permanent but Nomadic Museum.

Opis:
The site currently occupied by the Archaeological Museum in Kraków abounds with finds dating back to the early medieval period. It is located on the edge of the alluvial cone of the Prądnik, a tributary to the Vistula River. In the 9th-13th century, the area was contained within the fortified suburbium where a dwelling, productive and commercial settlement developed. After 1612, the land was donated to the Discalced Carmelite Order, and the monastery with the church of St. Michael and St. Joseph were built. In the year 1797, on the strength of the decree issued by the Austrian Emperor Joseph II (from 1782), concerning the dissolution of monastic orders, the Carmelite Order was dissolved, and the church with the monastery were confiscated by the State Treasury to be used as prison and jail cells. In 1954, Kraków authorities donated the complex to serve the needs of the Archaeological Museum in Kraków. The history of the buildings became the topic of subsequent exhibitions.

The exhibition “Life as Song. From the Portfolio of Professor Adolf Dygacz” was organized by the Museum “Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzów” in 2020. The curators of the exhibition and the authors of the accompanying it catalog are Krzysztof Bulla and Agata Krajewska. The composition of the exhibition together with the prepared catalog form a coherent in the terms of its content, factual and logically planned whole. The exhibition is devoted to archival materials preserved in the folklore portfolio of Professor Adolf Dygacz, an outstanding expert in the traditional musical culture of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin. In a separate part, the exhibition presents the scientist, his life, professional, pedagogical and social activity, especially the extensive area of his interests and research results collected in many studies and scientific works, songbook editions and popular science study sketches. The main subject of the exhibition is an extensive collection of folk songs, documented by Adolf Dygacz during many years of his field work and research. The archival resource of source materials was arranged into clear thematic blocks – information boards, correctly and precisely prepared, with examples of texts and song melodies, and boards of antique folk and glass instruments. The extensive exhibition has been complemented with illustrative music and audiovisual recordings. Therefore, the participants of the exhibition have the opportunity to choose only elements of their interest, which are placed in separate thematic boards. The organizational, exhibition and scientific project undertaken has the rank of a particularly important document, as it is a pioneering, revealing and momentous event that clearly and permanently fits into the landscape of contemporary culture of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin.
Kompozycja wystawy wraz z przygotowanym katalogiem tworzą spójną w treści, rzeczową i logicznie rozplanowaną całość. Ekspozycja poświęcona jest materiałom archiwalnym zachowanym w tece folklorystycznej profesora Adolfa Dygacza, wybitnego znawcy tradycyjnej kultury muzycznej Górnego Śląska i Zagłębia Dąbrowskiego. W odrębnym fragmencie wystawy prezentuje sylwetkę uczonego, jego życie, działalność zawodową, pedagogiczną i społeczną, zwłaszcza rozległy obszar jego zainteresowań i rezultatów badawczych sfinalizowanych w wielu studiach i pracach naukowych, edycjach śpiewnikowych oraz szkicach popularno-naukowych. Głównym tematem poznawczym wystawy pozostaje obszerny zbiór pieśni ludowych, udokumentowanych przez Adolfa Dygacza podczas długoletniej pracy terenowej i naukowo-badawczej. Archiwalny zasób materiałów źródłowych rozplanowano w czytelne bloki tematyczne – tablice informacyjne, opracowane poprawnie i szczegółowo, z przykładami tekstów i melodii pieśni oraz planszami zabytkowych instrumentów ludowych i szklanych. Obszerną ekspozycję uzupełniono poglądowymi nagraniami muzycznymi i audiowizualnymi.

Following a long disease, on 12 December 2022, Zbigniew Wawer passed away: a historian, boasting a postdoctoral degree, an associate professor, author of numerous publications, and a film producer. In 2012–2017, he ran the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, as of 2017 having become Director of the Royal Łazienki Museum. The period of his career connected with museology was marked by the process of establishing contacts with international partners focused mainly on presenting research results. It was also characterized by a high dynamics of displays meant to expose some unique artefacts, particularly Polonica, and of publishing projects. He considered these two aspects the most important in fulfilling the museum’s mission. Prof. Wawer also paid similar attention to collection extension, having demonstrated high efficiency in fundraising for the purpose. Furthermore, he strongly opted for the upgrading of his staff’s qualifications, while also seeing the necessity to verify museum-related competences. Many museum curators followed his encouragement to study. The paper presents the profile of a widely known individual in more detail; he was a researcher focused on revealing the historical truth and a museum curator frequently appreciated for his activity.

The article analyzes museum representations of communism in Poland from the perspective of exhibition strategies influencing the public understanding of the past. Over the past forty years, Western museums have increasingly moved away from the affirmative model of presenting the past, dominating since the nineteenth century, towards critical paradigms and even those pro-moting social activism. The analysis of Polish exhibitions devoted to recent history carried out from this perspective allows us to reveal the functions fulfilled by museum institutions in the Polish social and political reality.

The Warsaw ”Exhibition of Antiquities belonged to a series of events that were a part of the panEuropean fashion for popularising the achievements of fine arts, scholarship and industry in the form of presentations or exhibitions open to the general public. The exhibition opened in June 1856 in the private palace of the Count and Countess August Potocki at Krakowskie Przedmieście 32 and continued for more than half a year. Beside the Potockis, its coorganisers were outstanding scholars and collectors, such as Paweł Bolesław Podczaszyński, Karol Bayer, Edward Rastawiecki, Henryk Stecki and Kazimierz Stronczyński. The aim of the exhibition was to gather and showcase objects linked directly with historical figures and events that reinforced the sense of national identity in the period when Poland was not an independent state; for this reason the event was disguised as one aimed to collect funds for charitable purposes. The Potockis lent 288 pieces from their own collections; 123 of them have survived to our times. The exhibition was accompanied by the publication of pioneering books, including a catalogue and an album which is today considered the first iconographic register of historical monuments in the Polish lands. This exhibition has provided the focus for a new permanent exhibition currently under preparation at the Wilanów Palace.
