Opis:
This paper presents differences between fossil fuel (Jet A-1) and alcohol/Jet A-1 blend, during combustion process using laboratory test rig with miniature turbojet engine (MiniJETRig). The test rig has been created in Air Force Institute of Technology for research and development works aimed at alternative fuels for aviation. Fuel from different feedstock (non-fossil sources) is introduced into market due to ecological aspects, fuel price stability and energy security. Application of alcohol to propel aircraft has started form using a blend of aviation gasoline with ethanol in spark-ignited internal-combustion engines. Taking into account that large part of aviation fuels used by commercial aircraft is jet fuels, so in this area it has begun to look for possibilities to apply alcohol component. In 2016, international standard (ASTM) approved a synthetic blending component for aviation turbine fuels for use in civil aircraft and engines – alcohol-to-jet synthetic paraffinic kerosene (ATJ-SPK). According to standard, ATJ-SPK synthetic blending components shall be comprised hydro processed synthetic paraffinic kerosene wholly derived from isobutanol processed through dehydration, oligomerization, hydrogenation and fractionation. Two different fuel samples, a traditional fossil jet fuel (Jet A-1) and a blend of 10% butanol with Jet A-1 were tested. Laboratory tests of selected physicochemical properties and bench tests with the same profile of engine test were carry out for both fuel samples. The obtained results: engine parameters and exhaust gas emissions are compared and discussed.

Opis:
Vehicles powered in alternative ways have an increasing share in the car market. Their use is becoming more and more justified considering the ever more stringent standards for the emission of harmful substances from the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines and the introduction of restrictions on vehicle traffic in city centres. The possibility of using in the propulsion systems only an electric motor or its simultaneous use with the internal combustion engine enables a significant reduction of emission of harmful exhaust gas pollutants. This applies in particular to urban areas, where there are numerous exceedances of acceptable air quality standards. This problem is most noticeable in larger cities in Poland, where there is a lot of traffic. It is therefore legitimate to promote alternative vehicles powered in alternative ways. Their dual power system gives the opportunity to significantly reduce the emission of harmful substances. Therefore, the article presents own research, carried out on a chassis dynamometer, using two passenger cars, one with a spark-ignition combustion engine and the second with a hybrid drive system containing a spark-ignition engine and an electric motor (system without the possibility of recharging batteries from external sources). Vehicles were characterized by similar mass and the same displacement volumes of internal combustion engines. The results of the tests made it possible to compare cars in terms of exhaust emissions. For testing purposes, a chassis dynamometer was used, on which the WLTC homologation cycle was repeatedly reproduced. This is a new driving cycle, which replaces the NEDC cycle used so far in the type approval procedure in the European Union.

Opis:
One of the ways for toxic emissions reduction from internal combustion engines, beside external Exhaust purification systems and alternative fuels, is direct intervention into engine combustion process. The inner catalyst application, in form of ceramic active coating applied inside of combustion chamber, is one of the examples of that kind of solution. The application of active coating inside of a compression-ignition engine (diesel engine) may have an important impact on several stages of combustion process: fuel cracking, fore-flame phase, combustion phase and secondary combustion phase. Investigations of such construction are very rare in the literature. The paper presents the results of the researches which aim was analysis of inner catalyst application impact on toxic emissions. As a catalyst platinum and rhodium was used. As a catalyst support and local thermal barrier a zirconium ceramic coating was used. The catalyst was located on the gasoline engine valves surface. The research was done in Emission Research Laboratory of the Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines. The analysis was done according to European standard (EN ISO 16017-1: 2006) on gas chromatograph (Yarian 450 GC) equipped in capillary column and flame-ionization detector (FID). The results of the researches proofed effectiveness of that solution on toxic emissions limitation.

Opis:
Ship engines emit noxious gases (SO2, NOx, and VOC) and particulate matter (PM), mostly black carbon. Since 1990, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations gradually restricted the level of emission of NOx, which since 2016 have to be lower than 2-3.4 g/kWh, depending on engine power. SO2 emission reduction has begun since 2010 and now the content of sulphur in marine fuels is limited to 3.5%. At the same time, the Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA) has been established, at which the sulphur content in fuel cannot be higher than 0.1%. Since 2020, only a fuel of 0.5% sulphur can be used at all cruising areas outside SECA. It should be noted that due to lack of efficient technology, IMO still has not issued regulations regarding the PM emission by ships. The paper discusses various electrostatic techniques used for the reduction of PM emission in Diesel engine exhausts. Electrostatic scrubber systems, using seawater, allow removal of PM from exhausts with high efficiency and simultaneously SO2 gas. Electrostatic agglomerators allow increasing submicron and nanoparticles by coagulation of those particles to the larger ones, which could be removed by conventional techniques.

Podkreślono wady metody i przedstawiono propozycję pomiaru jednopunktowego.
Emission of harmful compounds in the exhaust gases depends on the operating conditions of the engine and its technical condition. Therefore, the legislative activity is focused on the introduction of new diagnostic and research procedures. The preferred method is using probes with plurality of holes for multi-gas sampling from the entire cross-section of exhaust stream. This method appears to vitiated by an error caused by averaging dilution and sampling gas from the very beginning of the measurement path. The results of measurements contained in the article are related to changes in the concentration of harmful substances in exhaust gases depending on the distance from the axis of the jet. In the article the disadvantages of this the methods were highlighted and the single-point measurement method was proposed.

Regulations concerning the limitation of harmful compounds emission contained in exhaust gases become more restrictive. This is observed within regulations regarding land-based installations and also rules applied to ships of global trade fleet. Other restrictions of vessels emissions, enclosed in rules set out in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78 are gradually implemented and establish emission limits for ship engines. The boiler delivers the heat energy required for fuel preparation for main and auxiliary engines - and also by consuming fuel in its combustion chamber becomes and emitter. This article describes the anticipated methodology of the boiler steam efficiency, depending on the main engine installed. Additionally, fuel oil consumption analysis in various steam capacity range performed using the histograms. The histograms were produced on the basis of service reports of similar units, and combining fuel oil consumption with exhaust emission during operation. A vessel engine report includes monthly machinery abstract and is compiled for a ship-owner on the basis of the log book records. Quantified exhaust emission from auxiliary oil fired boiler contributes determination the overall emissions from a ship.

Nowadays more and more attention is paid to minimizing the costs of air operations. The largest share in the cost of the flight is the cost of consumed fuel. Taking into account the external conditions, having impact on the aircraft, such as wind direction and magnitude when planning the aircraft trajectory it is possible to reduce flight time and thus reduce fuel consumption. An additional advantage is the simultaneous reduction of pollutants in the jet engines exhausts. In the times of pro-ecological trends and concepts (e.g. Clean Sky, Single European Sky, CORSIA) this aspect is of crucial importance. The emission of selected pollutants in the jet engine exhausts (NOx, CO and HC) emitted during the flight of a business jet on the route whose cruise phase was assumed 1000 km long was determined in the article. The aircraft used in the research was Gulfstream GIV, powered by two Rolls Royce TAY 611-C engines, for which a cruising altitude of 10 km and a flight speed of 0.8 Ma were assumed. The thrust necessary for the flight at these cruise parameters was set, and then the engine thrust appropriate for the flight and the corresponding specific fuel consumption were determined. On this basis, based on the available ICAO data, the emission of selected pollutants in tis engines exhausts was determined for windless conditions. Next, the analysis of the impact of wind - its magnitude and direction – on the emission of these pollutants was made. The results of the conducted analyses are presented in diagrams and discussed in the conclusions.

Among the most important problems currently faced by air transport, we can distinguish the adverse impact of aircrafts on the natural environment, as well as the rising costs of transport. One of the possibilities to improve this situation is better adjustment of aircraft characteristics to the performed transport tasks, taking into account all the requirements and limitations that exist in air traffic and the adverse impact of air transport on the natural environment. It is reflected in the research tasks conducted under the SESAR program. The aspiration to minimize the adverse impact of aircrafts on the environment is executed, among others, through determining such trajectories that are characterized by minimal fuel consumption or minimal emission of harmful substances in the engines exhausts. These goals are corresponding with the research conducted and described in the paper. The main aim of the work was to analyse the impact of wind speed and direction on the emission of harmful substances of a jet aircraft performing a flight on a given route. For research purposes, the route between two Polish cities Gdansk and Rzeszow was considered. The distance between the two airports was divided into sections for which wind direction and strength were determined (read from the windy.com website). Next, the aircraft performance was determined and the fuel consumption and the amount of harmful compounds (CO2, NOx, CO and HC), emitted in the engines exhausts were determined for the route from Gdansk to Rzeszow (under favourable wind conditions) and on the return route - from Rzeszow to Gdansk (under unfavourable wind conditions). For comparative purposes, emission of these substances for windless conditions was also determined. The results are presented in tables and depicted in the graph, as well as discussed in the conclusions of the paper.

Opis:
In currently implemented international aviation strategies and programs, including those realised under the European Union policy, such as Clean Sky, SES, SESAR and, CORSIA, the environmental aspect is particularly prominent – reducing the emission of all gaseous pollutants, and from 2020 also particulate matter. Therefore, it is important to know how the change in flight parameters (altitude, speed) affects the emission of pollutants in jet engine exhausts. Such information will enable to adjust the flight altitude of the aircraft when ecological aspect is taken into consideration. In addition to the operating condition (altitude, flight speed, range of power or thrust), the amount and type of pollutants emitted depends on the type of aircraft, its aerodynamic characteristics, engine type and as well as on the type of fuel used. The impact of changes in aircraft flight parameters (speed and altitude) on the performance of a bypass jet engine and the emission of pollutants in its exhausts is analysed in the paper. For this purpose, the speed-altitude characteristics of such an engine were determined. Next, the emission indexes (EI) for the LTO phase taken from the ICAO database were used to determine the emission indexes corresponding to given parameters of both the engine operation and the aircraft flight. For selected speeds and cruising altitudes, the value of thrust required for the flight of the aircraft was determined and to this value, the engine operation range was assigned as well the corresponding pollutant emission indexes. This allowed to calculate the mass of pollutants emitted per unit of time for given flight parameters. The results obtained are presented in the graphs and discussed.

Opis:
An intensive expansion of motorization caused a necessity to limit its harmful acting on the environment. It is connected with more and more law requirements and regulations from the range of protection of the natural environment. The essential part in this process is played by vegetable fuel like rape oil methyl group ester of higher fatty acids, more and more often used to supply Diesel engines. The most essential problem for these drive units in the ecological aspect is the smokiness level, it means the soot contents in exhaust gases. Using this kind of vegetable fuels seems to be reasonable, especially in case of older construction engines, for which introducing of other solutions could be troublesome and unjustified. In this lecture there has been discussed affect of change of factory settings of the unitary fuel consumption and exhaust gases smokiness of the engine with the turbulence combustion chamber supplied with RME. The parameters adjusted in relation to the nominal settings were: injection pressure, the injection advance angle and injection pump volumetric fuel charge. The results of the tests have been shown in the form of the external surface characteristics of the engine tested.
W niniejszym referacie omówiono wpływ zmiany nastaw fabrycznych na jednostkowe zużycie paliwa i zadymienie spalin silnika z komorą wirową spalania zasilanego RME. Parametrami regulowanymi w stosunku do ustawień nominalnych były: ciśnienie wtrysku, kąt wyprzedzenia wtrysku i objętościowa dawka paliwa pompy wtryskowej. Wyniki badań przedstawiono w formie powierzchniowych charakterystyk zewnętrznych badanego silnika.

In this paper is presented a calculation procedure based on Lagrange's interpolation formuła which has been used for describing the external characteristics of compression-ignition engine of the 359 type. The characteristic curves of specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas smokiness were chosen as an example, which had been obtained during examinations on engine test bed for a drive unitfuelled with four types of fuel. Measurements were carried out on a standard engine test bed which is part of laboratory facilities of the Department of Automotive Vehicles Operation, Western Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. The study object was an unsupercharged four-stroke engine of domestic production of the 359 type. It is a six-cylinder compression-ignition drive unit with direct fuel injection system. Interpolating polynomials determined analytically for respective characteristics have been presented in the graphical form, while experimental examination results necessary for obtaining them have been additionally tabulated. The presented methodology allows simplification of particular experiment stages by giving possibility to estimate analytically the missing data and with preservation of a minimum number of measuring points. With small corrections, it may be used in similar examinations on other engine test beds. Its application should support the planning of particular experiment stages but does not, in any case, replace it since determination of engine characteristic curves is possible through research only.

The study presents a draft calculation of fuel consumption and emission of CO2, CO, HC and NOx by a engine car used in real traffic conditions. In this project, the author was inspired by the results of his own studies and those of selected domestic and foreign research centres. The (static) engine performance maps including Brake Specific Fuel Consumption maps, ge (CO2), and maps of speciftc emission of CO, HC and NOX,, serve as the basis for this study. Underlying such an approach are the disparate courses offuel consumption and emission levels in the driving and non-driving modes of the engine. For the study purposes, an adeąuate testing programme should be implemented, using a variable driving cycle [1]. A departure from the homologation cycles applied to this end allows covering, on an engine performance map, the area of engine operation being of interest to us with measuring points. For calculations in operational conditions, the maps of changes of Delta ge, Delta CO2, Delta CO, Delta HC and Delta NOX for nonstationary operating conditions of the engine will be a complement to static engine performance maps. The author has already developed partial maps for the first two parameters. The development of the others requires the implementation of a costly research scheme in cooperation with a leading domestic research centre.
