Opis:
The electrophysiological characteristics of alcoholics, such as the P300 amplitude of the Event-Related Potential (ERP), are related to high risk in their offspring, and are considered to be biological endophenotypes of a predisposition to develop alcohol use disorders. Contemporary knowledge justifies early diagnoses of the alcohol risk degree among adolescents, or even children, including their families, involving an examination of the P300 potential as an endophenotype, prior to achievement of an age of alcohol initiation. The results of such research approaches may be of importance not only cognitively, but also of prophylactically, in the early recognition of increased susceptibility to alcohol. The simplicity and non-invasiveness, and the exceptionally low costs of the methods described, should obtain for the present as well as in the future, a wider examination, one potentially even mass scope of in character and usefulness. The knowledge of such an endophenotype and genetically-related susceptibility, in the individual, family, and social dimension and transmission, and in the rearing of children and adolescents, could protect – not just individuals – but many from entering into the route of addiction, which is most frequently the effect of acting unaware and with negative life consequences, both generational and transgenerational for generations to come.

Opis:
The visual evoked potential technique makes it possible to explore the visual system with a high temporal resolution, thereby providing information about different phases of binocular integration. The aim of the study was to characterize the amplitude, latency and scalp distribution of pattern-reversal gratings visual evoked potentials related to binocular viewing. 12 adult participants without any pathology of the visual system were examined by electroencephalography (EEG), with three viewing conditions: the dominant eye, non-dominant eye, and both eyes. They were tested with reversed checkerboard patterns presented with a frequency of 1.02 Hz. The amplitudes of visual evoked potentials were calculated to detect the effect of binocular integration. The strongest binocular summation was observed on the N75 component. P100 component was also affected by binocular viewing, mainly above parieto-occipital cortex. In the later time window binocular summation was reflected in changes in amplitude of N145 component over the right parieto-occipital region. The obtained results suggest that binocular summation is not limited to occipital cortex as its influence was also observed above parieto-occipital regions. Changes in amplitude of N75 component looks to be a good predictor of binocular summation.

Opis:
The paper presents the use of visual evoked potentials VEP to the objective assessment of visual acuity. Methods of using visual evoked potentials (VEP) rely on the assessment of changes of the electrical action potentials generated within the cortex. To diagnose the degree of weakening eyesight a series of studies on healthy people and visually impaired ones were made. Electrophysiological studies of the eye, using noninvasive VEP examination allow a noninvasive and objective assessment of visual acuity. The use of visual evoked potentials gives the objectivity in assessment of visual acuity what may be very important in ophthalmology. This particularly may concern children examination, people with mental retardation and suspected of simulation.

In a typical experiment on the misinformation effect, subjects fi rst watch some event, afterwards read a description of it which in the experimental group includes some incorrect details, and answer questions relating to the original event. Typically, subjects in the misled experimental group report more false details than those from the control group. The main purpose of the presented study was to compare two methods of reducing the misinformation effect, namely – warning against misinformation and reinforced self-affi rmation. The reinforced self-affi rmation consists of two elements: the participants recall their greatest achievements of life, and are being given a positive feedback about their performance in a memory task. The obtained results showed that the reinforced self-affi rmation was more effective than warning, although the latter also caused a signifi cant reduction of the vulnerability to misinformation.

Opis:
Objectives We report the results of the visual evoked potentials (VEP) examination in patients after severe poisoning by methanol. Material and Methods The group of 47 patients (38 males and 9 females) was assembled out of persons who survived an outbreak of poisoning by the methanol adulterated alcohol beverages, which happened in the Czech Republic in 2012–2013. The visual evoked potentials examination was performed using monocular checkerboard pattern-reversal stimulation. Two criteria of abnormality were chosen: missing evoked response, and wave P1 latency > 117 ms. Non-parametric statistical methods (median, range, and the median test) were used to analyze factors influencing the VEP abnormality. Results The visual evoked potential was abnormal in 20 patients (43%), 5 of them had normal visual acuity on the Snellen chart. The VEP abnormality did not correlate significantly with initial serum concentrations of methanol, formic acid or lactate; however, it showed statistically significant inverse relation to the initial serum pH: the subgroup with the abnormal VEP had significantly lower median pH in comparison with the subgroup with the normal VEP (7.16 vs. 7.34, p = 0.04). The abnormality was not related to chronic alcohol abuse. Conclusions The visual evoked potentials examination appeared sensitive enough to detected even subclinical impairment of the optic system. Metabolic acidosis is likely to be the key factor related to the development of visual damage induced by methanol. The examination performed with a delay of 1–9 months after the poisoning documented the situation relatively early after the event. It is considered as a baseline for the planned long-term follow-up of the patients, which will make it possible to assess the dynamics of the observed changes, their reversibility, and the occurrence of potential late sequelae.

Opis:
Steady State Visually Evoked Potentials have been known for several decades and they appear in the primary visual cortex of brain as a result of light stimulation of the sense of sight. In this article a simple method for electroencephalographic data acquisition is presented. The system is based on the DSM-51 unit connected to goggles with blinking diodes and Mindset-1000 EEG amplifier with 16 channels. We present self-developed hardware and method of effective synchronization for the light stimulation and brain activity recording.

Opis:
Background. Neurodynamic and neurophysiological properties were studied in 53 men aged 21-35 years at the beginning and after 6 months of martial law. Material and methods. The neurodynamic, individual-typological and sensorimotor properties of the subjects were studied while processing information using the “Diagnost 1M” system. The neurophysiological characteristics of long-latency visual evoked potentials (LVEPs) were determined using the “Neurokom” EEG-complex. Results. At the beginning of the martial law, men were divided into two subgroups: conditionally resistant (the first subgroup) and not resistant (the second subgroup) to longterm psycho-emotional stress. It was found that neurodynamic, individual-typological properties of the first subgroup changed little and differed significantly from the second subgroup: balance (BNP), functional mobility (FMNP) and strength of nervous processes (SNP). Individual-typological properties of the nervous system (FMNP, SNP, BNP) and sensorimotor properties (SVMR, RC1-3, RC2-3) underwent significant changes in the representatives of the second subgroup in 6 months. Subjects of this subgroup had lower amplitude values between the peak intervals of N1-P2, P2-N2 and Р3 peak, as well as significantly shorter latency of Р1, Р2 and longer Р3 components, which indicates a violation of cortical-subcortical interaction. Conclusions. It was found that the studied properties determine the formation of adaptive reactions in the conditions of martial law
Wprowadzenie. U 53 mężczyzn w wieku 21-35 lat badano cechy neurodynamiczne i neurofizjologiczne w chwili rozpoczęcia działań i po 6 miesiącach stanu wojennego. Materiał i metody. Analizowano cechy neurodynamiczne, osobniczo-typologiczne i sensomotoryczne osób badanych podczas przetwarzania sygnałów informacji za pomocą systemu „Diagnost 1M”. Charakterystyka neurofizjologiczna wzrokowych potencjałów wywołanych o długim czasie opóźnienia (ang. long-latency visual evoked potential – LVEP) została określona przy użyciu kompleksu EEG „Neurokom”. Wyniki.

In this paper, we present a case report of a 26-year-old patient who had been experiencing isolated unilateral tinni-tus for 2 months. Audiologic examinations, such as pure tone, speech and impedance audiometry, ABR and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) showed no abnormalities. The videonystagmography (VNG) and computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) also showed no pathology. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was the only test that confirmed the presence of the vestibular schwannoma in this patient. Conclusions: MRI should be considered in pa-tients suspected of having a vestibular schwannoma with unilateral tinnitus as the only symptom, despite normal au-diological test results (with no retrocochlear findings).

Opis:
Evoked potentials are one of the brain's electrical activity types. They appear on the human scalp as a result of a registration of an external stimulus (e.g. an appearance or a change of a sound, a flash of light or an image). Generally, they are used in medical diagnosis, but they also may be used in brain-computer interfaces. In this chapter a laboratory set for the acquisition and analysis of evoked potentials is described. The main part of this set is a photostimulator consisting of sixteen LEDs and the ATmega 328 microcontroller. The software created by the authors allows for: connection between EEG device, stimulator and computer, input stimulus control, output signal filtering and its classification. The presented set may support a process of brain-computer interface design.
