Opis:
The objective of the study was to trace the variability of the hydrochemical conditions in three lakes of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship (Poland) - Starzyca, Maszewskie and Nowogardzkie in the annual cycle. The research was done in 2018-2019, and samples for analysis were collected 4 times a year. All analyses were performed applying standard methods. Such hydrochemical indices were determined as dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, content of orthophosphates, total phosphorus, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, chlorophyll a and iron. The study showed that all lakes in the research cycle were characterised by a polymictic type of water mixing, and the trophic level, based on the adopted criteria, indicated advanced eutrophy, which may also be caused by anthropogenic pressure. Oxygen conditions characterised by deoxidation of the waters in the bottom layer in the spring and summer seasons, and clear oxygenation in the surface water layer (in Lake Maszewskie reaching even 188.5% in the spring) confirm the significant advancement of the eutrophication process. The supply of phosphorus and nitrogen in spring from pelagic waters in the waters of the examined lakes influences concentrations of chlorophyll a in the summer. The influence of “internal supply” (bottom waters and bottom sediments) on the amount of nutrients available for autotrophs is clearly visible in the analysed lakes - an increase in nitrogen and mineral phosphorus concentrations in relation to surface waters was observed in the bottom layer.

In this work, the nutrients and eutrophication problem are integrated into a nature-based solution by incorporating microalgae-based nutrient removal from wastewater and collecting the residue in an anaerobic digestion plant to produce biogas that is directly exported to an existing gas-fired power plant and closes the bioresource loop. El Burullus lake in Egypt was selected as a case study because it is rich in nutrients and suitable for the integrated system. The theoretical results were promising as for one-hectare, nutrient pollution could be reduced with a total nitrogen removal rate of 4 kg•d-1, a total phosphorus removal rate of 1.1 kg•d-1, and a total COD removal rate of 9.3 kg•d-1. The digester volume corresponding to the biomass produced was 120 m3 per hectare of algae pond and the methane yield () from anaerobic digestion was 73 m3•d-1.

Opis:
This paper presents the effects of an application of Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology in line with the method developed by Sitarek, thus evaluating its effectiveness as a tool in the biological restoration of a water body. In 2012-2013, EM was applied in Muchawka Reservoir situated in the town of Siedlce (eastern Poland). Analyses of water parameters and bottom sediments were carried out in 2011, before the EM technology was implemented and again in 2013-2015 after the EM application was completed. In spring 2011, the average total nitrogen (TN) content at the surface was 3.1 mg dm-3 while the total mineral nitrogen content equalled 0.893 mg dm-3. After the EM application was completed, in the summer of 2013, the TN content was on average 2.5 mg dm-3. The content of nitrates and nitrites in the summer of 2013 reached 1.20 mg dm-3 at the most. Lower levels of such forms of nitrogen were observed in 2013 and also in subsequent years at the bathing beach (site 1) and the hostel (site 3) than at the inflow (site 4). Likewise, the highest content of phosphates was recorded at the inflow site (4), being four -fold lower at the other sites (1, 3). The average content of TP before the EM technology was applied was 0.205 mg dm-3, whereas after the application of effective microorganisms it fell down to 0.189 mg dm-3 (2013-2015). Only slight changes of TSITP indicated that waters in Muchawka Reservoir were eutrophic. After EM was applied twice, no streaks, cyanobacterial scums or pollution at the bathing sites were visible. The bacteriological evaluation of the water samples was carried out by the County Branch of the State Sanitary Inspectorate in Siedlce. The bacteriological water quality was described as “excellent”. These findings suggest that the method developed by Sitarek, combined with probiotic preparations, could be a useful tool in the restoration of water bodies, but the conclusion requires further detailed verification.

The aim of this study was to determine the content of phosphorus and nitrogen in the bottom sediments of the Poraj Reservoir located on the Warta River, along with defining their spatial distribution and the relationship between these elements and organic matter, aluminum and iron. Samples of bottom sediments were collected on the basis of regular measurement grid of 46 points located in the area of the water reservoir Poraj. The collected samples were analyzed in terms of content of following elements, which values are in range: total phosphorus (TP) 0.06 – 5.06 g/kg, total nitrogen (TN) 0.17 – 9.66 g/kg, organic matter (OM) 0.49 – 28.41% of solid content, aluminum (Al) 2.44 – 145.15 g/kg and iron (Fe) 0.28 – 16.50 g/kg. By using of GIS system, spatial distribution of obtained results of laboratory analyzes were interpolated (Inverse Distance Weighted method was used). On basis of spatial distribution it was noted that in northern part of water reservoir bottom sediments have greater values of TP, TN and OM than in southern part. The study also included calculation of correlation between: OM and TN (n=46, R2 = 0.9335), TN and Fe (n=46, R2 = 0.8782), TN and Al (n=46, R2 = 0.8629), OM and Fe (n=46, R2 = 0.8243), OM and Al (n=46, R2 = 0.7981), TP and Fe (n=46, R2 = 0.7456), TP and Al (n=46, R2 = 0.6209). The presented pilot studies show that the potential content of phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter in the sediments of the water reservoir Poraj can reach a significant level. The need to plan and carry out further research allowing the evaluation of the properties of the analyzed elements and examining their potential impact on water quality in the tested water reservoir was stated.

Samołęskie Lake is situated in the Poznań Lakeland in Greater Poland Voivodeship, Szamotuły County, Wronki District. The lake adjoins a little village of Samołęż of about 500 residents. The glacial waterbody of over 30ha acreage is a typical tunnel-valley lake having a maximum depth of over 22 meters. It predominantly serves fishing and recreation purposes offering a beach and a sailing center. Near the coastline (not in the direct vicinity) there is a farmland. The objective of the dissertation was to assess the quality of Samołęskie Lake waters that was delivered based on the studies carried out in spring and summer, when the waterbody demonstrates excessive fertility. The studies covered the analysis of the basic physical and chemical parameters of the lake water. The measurement was carried out on a fortnight basis by means of a measurement apparatus such as the photometer and the Secchi disc. The collected results are presented with the use of figures later in this paper, whereas their in-depth analysis allowed to compile and formulate conclusions. The results of studies and analyses lay the foundations to state that the quality of Samołęskie Lake waters requires continuous monitoring and application of remedial and rehabilitation measures.

Nitrogen load is crucial for its application in various fields such as agriculture and improving water quality control for authorities responsible for establishing agricultural policies in the area. The calculation of nitrogen load using existing equations is not applicable for all types of rivers, thus requiring the development of a new equation that can be applied to lakes and rivers in the Biebrza river catchment. To determine the new equation, extensive mapping of the catchment area was conducted, which was adjusted to precipitation and runoff in the area, allowing the observed results to be compared. Based on several analyses, the new equation has better accuracy, RMSE of the new model-based estimation decreased by 65.9% in 2005–2015 and 62.2% in 2016–2021 for river and 92% in 2008–2019 and 95% in 2020–2021 for lakes. Therefore, the application of the new calibrated empirical model provides results close to the real values and it can be used in the Biebrza river basin to simulate the total nitrogen runoff.

Opis:
The study was carried out using water samples from two small retention reservoirs located in the communes: Czarna Białostocka and Turośń Kościelna in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The main tasks of both reservoirs are to improve the water balance by means of regulating the levels and water outflow. Three characteristic measurement and control points were selected on both reservoirs in accordance to the water flow in the longitudinal section. The first and third points were located near the inflow and outflow of water, while the second in the middle of the reservoirs. Samples of water for the study were collected from the surface layer of the shore zone of the reservoirs once a month from March 2015 to February 2017 (water from two hydrological years was analyzed). Water samples were subject to determination of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll “a” concentrations, as well as turbidity. Contamination of the water reservoirs with biogenic compounds is a common problem and at the same time difficult to eliminate due to the scattered nature of external sources of pollution, especially in the case of agricultural catchments, as well as the inflow of untreated sewage from areas directly adjacent to the reservoirs. Based on achieved results, high values of TSI (TN), TSI (TP), TSI (Chl), and overall TSI, clearly indicate the progressive degradation of water quality in analyzed reservoirs. Appearing water blooms due to the mass development of phytoplankton adversely affect the quality of water in the reservoirs and biochemical processes occurring both in water and bottom sediments, are conditioned by progressive eutrophication.

The BONUS MIRACLE project focuses on understanding the of the impact of climate change on water environments, including it’s affects on hydrological regimes and nutrient concentrations. The overall objective of MIRACLE is to initiate a social learning process in collaboration with stakeholders, that can identify new configurations for governance (conceptual, institutional, and practice based) in order to reduce nutrient enrichment and flood risk in the Baltic Sea region. These configurations should be understood as new solutions to protect water resources, ecosystem services and provide win-win solutions. To achieve this environmental modelling of the Reda catchment, Poland, is used as a pilot study for the project. Mathematical models which specified the detailed processes associated with water cycles, including determining interconnections and quantifying variables characteristic to the assessment of the water resource quantity and quality, were found to be useful. Due to the complexity of some models, launching, entering the appropriate data in the correct formats and calibrating the models proved to be challenging. Future developments in the water management sector should concentrate on specific local catchment areas where the application of integrated water resource management principles and the adaptation to climate change are more easily merged with local spatial planning. However, a larger number and higher frequency of measurements would be required.

W latach 2002-2004 badano zawartość chlorofilu α i feofityny w glonach planktonowych Zalewu Szczecińskiego.
Measurements of chlorophyll α and pheophytin in phytoplankton of Szczecin Lagoon were carried out once a week over three hydrologic years 2002-2004. Concentrations of chlorophyll α varied within a wide range: the yearly coefficient of variation ranged from 29.4 to 66.0%. May was the best month for measuring chlorophyll α content since at that time the pigment content was rather stable, high, and close to the yearly average. The pheophytine to chlorophyll α ratio, which is considered an index of the physiological status of phytoplankton varied between 0.30 and 1.62.

Nutrients are substances that are used by living organisms in the growth and survival of organisms. On the basis of this background, the aim of this study was to assess the concentration of nutrients (macro and micronutrients) and chlorophyll in the Menjer lake and to examine the relationship between nutrient concentration and algal biomass to identify the determinants of algal development in tropical lakes (Menjer Lake Wonosobo, Indonesia). The research was conducted using a survey method at Menjer Lake Wonosobo. Observations and sampling were carried out 3 times with intervals of 1 month at 7 locations in the photic zone. The concentrations of macronutrients and micronutrients in the Menjer Lake were spatially even in all locations and the temporally slightly increased concentrations were relatively the same during the measurement period. The Cu, NO2, Si, and Na macronutrients are the determining factors for algal blooming in Menjer Lake Wonosobo. The effect of Cu, NO2 and Si concentrations was inversely related to the algal abundance, while the Ca, Na and Mo concentrations were in line with the abundance of algae.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the influence of anthropogenic pollution on the water quality of the Ciemięga River, which flows through the Jastków commune, located in the Lublin Province in the South-Eastern Poland. The analyses of the river water were conducted in the years 2019–2020. Each year, the samples for physicochemical analyses were collected seasonally (in February, May, August and November) from the seven selected Ciemięga River sampling points found in the following localities: Ożarów, Moszenki, Sieprawice, Jastków, Snopków and Jakubowice Konińskie. In addition, 3 series of microbiological analysis were conducted in 2020. Electrolytic conductivity, total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrogen and sulfates constituted the physicochemical indicators of poor water quality in the river. Their average values exceeded the standards for the 2nd class of water quality. High concentration of these indicators, especially of the total phosphorus, could have been related to the influx of domestic wastewater from agricultural holdings, wastewater flows from agricultural areas as well as soil erosion and leaching. The levels of E. coli bacteria and fecal coliform allocated the Ciemięga River waters to the 4th class of water quality and could result from domestic wastewater flow to the river. In order to improve the water quality of the Ciemięga River, it is necessary to reduce or eliminate point and non-point sources of pollution by means of streamlining of the agricultural areas fertilization, regulating the water and wastewater management, regulating of the waste management, as well as the appropriate spatial policy and landscaping of the water catchment areas.

Opis:
In this study, which contains a database covering the period from January 2008 to December 2010, on the water level of the Hammam Bougrara dam located in a semi-arid zone with moderate winter (western Algeria), we focused specifically on the mechanisms of eutrophication as well as the spatial and temporal variation of the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the reservoir. The diagnosis revealed high concentrations of certain elements such as $P, PO_4, NO_3, NO_2, NH_4, Na^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}, K^+, Cl^-, HCO_3^– and SO_4^{–2}$, which characterizes highly mineralized waters with conductivities between 1100 and 1800 S/cm, therefore polluted and selenitic. These waters are rich in nutrients, such as phosphorus and with a slightly alkaline pH (between 7.1 and 9.1) favor the proliferation of organisms such as Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Diatomophycéeswhich together account 93 57% of the population of algae. This proliferation causes a decrease in transparency and dissolved oxygen which are also signs of eutrophication. This study will adopt a better methodological approach to reduce the number of stations and increase the sampling rate, for a thorough understanding of limnology operation of the dam to ensure its protection. Despite the very high phosphorus inlakes during those years, the symptoms of eutrophication in the reservoir (chlorophyll a.) They are far from achieving the expected levels of extreme loads on the flow-replies Vollenweider. This could be explained by the fact that, upon his arrival for restraint, ortho-phosphate is quickly rendered inaccessible due to algae efficient flocculation means of fine clay particles and a formation hydroxyapatite followed by precipitation. Consequently, one can conclude that it would be necessary to develop and deepen our knowledge of limnology of lakes and reservoirs in temperate climates, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, in order to embed processes in these lakes a general model describing the relationship load-response, similar to that of Vollenweider. The results could help set specific objectives to reduce phosphorus inputs depending on the intended use of the waters and allow better management of water quality in terms of trophic response and in the context of sustainable development and decision support.

The Uszwica river catchment is located in the central part of Lesser Poland province, within Brzeski and Bocheński districts. The river is 61.2 km long, and its catchment area is 322.5 km2. It is characterized by forest-agricultural land use and high share of residential areas of both compact (the city of Brzesko) and dispersed nature. In the abiotic terms, the Uszwica in its upper course may be classified as a flysch stream (type 12). From the moment of joining the Niedźwiedź, stream until its discharge into the Vistula at km 151+700 it is a sand and clay lowland river (type 19). Hydrochemical research were conducted in the years 2011 and 2012 at two measurement-control points – one located near the mouth of the river (point 1) and one located about 7.5 km downstream from the city of Brzesko (point 2). Each month 18 water quality parameters were determined and they underwent comparative and statistical analyses. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated for both measurement-control points. Then, they were used to determine the ecological potential of the river and to evaluate water quality parameters with respect to its suitability as fish habitat and eutrophication risk. Significance of differences between the values of individual parameters recorded at different measurement-control points was estimated using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test for α = 0.05. The same test was used to determine the significance of differences between individual parameters for the winter and summer season at each point. Analysis of the results revealed that water flowing via developed areas (point 2) was significantly less saturated with oxygen and contained higher amounts of suspended solids, organic matter and nutrients, as compared to the section of the river flowing mainly through extensively used agricultural areas. Therefore, the ecological potential of the river was considered good in its lower course and poor upstream from point 2. Disturbances in seasonal concentrations of some biogenic factors indicated high degree of water pollution in the middle course of the Uszwica. However, due to intense self-purification, water quality in the lower course was similar to that in natural conditions. On the entire investigated section of the Uszwica does not meet water quality requirements for salmonids and cyprinids, but the habitats are more favorable near the mouth of the river. Waterassessed at point 2 may be classified as eutrophic due to high concentration of total phosphorus.

In the years 1993-1995 biological research was carried out on three lakes, which are situated in a typical agricultural catchment area, along the Gołaniecka River. The hydrobiological examination carried out in 1993 revealed a stable state of eutrophy on these lakes. At that time neither of the Bukowieckie lakes was used for recreation, while at the Kobyleckie lake there were a number of buildings, including private holiday homes and holiday camps. In 1995, the year finishing the examination, recreation housing began to develop at the Bukowieckie Du?e lake and also an acceleration of tourism was observed on the Kobyleckie lake. In the spring and summer of 2000 hydrobiological research was repeated in order to find out whether the changes in the neighbourhood of the lakes had affected the chemical condition of lake waters. Although the building area by the lakes was still unfinished, particular changes of many parameters of water were already observed. Negative effects of trophic status were noted in the decrease of the visibility of water, increase of the nutrients concentration, in the outstanding blue-green algae character of the spring phytoplankton (Aphanizomenon issatschenkoi (Ussac.) Proschkina-Lavrenko; Planktothrix agardhii (Gom.) Anagn. et Kom.; Limnothrix redekei (Van Goor) Meffert) and zooplankton (Keratella cochlearis f. tecta (Lauterborn), K. quadrata (O.F. Müller), Anuraeopsis fissa (Gosse), Bosmina longirostris (O.F. Müller) and Chydorus sphaericus (O.F. Müller)), the increase of the total densities of zooplankton with the dominance of rotifers, the impoverishment of the phytolittoral, as well as quality and quantity changes in the structure of macrophytes.
W latach 1993-1995 przeprowadzono badania biologiczne na jeziorach: Bukowieckim Du- żym, Bukowieckim Małym i Kobyleckim, położonych w obrebie typowej zlewni rolniczej, wzdłuż Strugi Gołanieckiej. Badania hydrobiologiczne przeprowadzone w 1993 roku swiadczyły o stabilnym stanie eutrofii w tych jeziorach. 2). Głównym celem przeprowadzonych badan był opis istotnych zmian jakosciowych i ilosciowych parametrów fizyczno-chemicznych i biologicznych, ze szczególnym odniesieniem do aspektów dotyczacych wzrostu poziomu trofii badanych zbiorników. Negatywne efekty w stanie trofii były zwiazane ze zmniejszajaca sie przezroczystoscia wody, wzrostem koncentracji biogenów, wybitnie sinicowym charakterem fitoplanktonu wiosennego (Aphanizomenon issatschenkoi (Ussac.) Proschkina-Lavrenko; Planktothrix agardhii (Gom.) Anagn. et Kom.; Limnothrix redekei (Van Goor) Meffert) i zooplanktonem (Keratella cochlearis f. tecta (Lauterborn), K. quadrata (O. F. Müller), Anuraeopsis fissa (Gosse), Bosmina longirostris (O.F. Müller) and Chydorus sphaericus (O.F. Müller)), wzrostem całkowitej liczebnosci zooplanktonu z dominacja wrotków (tab. 3, ryc. 1, 2), zniszczeniami w strefie fitolitoralu i zmianami jakosciowymi i ilosciowymi w strukturze makrofitów (tab. 4).

Opis:
A high diversity of soils was found in the surrounding of a water body in the Ustnik nature reserve. Brown soils, deluvial soils, gley soils, Quaternary rendzinas, peat-muck and gyttja soils were noted there. Mineral soils are cultivated while organic soils form a narrow seasonally flooded strip. All soils are neutral or alkaline and resistant to acidification. As a result of surface runoff and mineralization of organic matter, the waters of the reserve are eutrophic. Nutrients are partially retained in deluvial soils. Anthropogenic denudation made the depression shallower and smaller. Intensification of agriculture poses a threat to proper functioning of the ecosystem.
