Opis:
This paper aims at offering insight into the contemporary migration of Romanians towards Serbia, starting with the interwar period, continuing with the communist rule and focusing on the period after the fall of the Romanian communist regime, in 1989. What this study does is delimit the stages of the Romanian migration to Serbia, identify the social categories taking part in these migratory processes, the preferred regions for settling in Serbia, as well as the reasons behind people’s decision to leave the country. I also show how the Romanian emigrants relate to the Romanian autochthonous communities in Serbia (the Vlachs of Eastern Serbia and the Romanians of Vojvodina), in which they usually settle. After presenting the theoretical background relating to ethnic migrations, I introduce a new theoretical concept, reverse ethnic migration, which best fits the situation of contemporary Romanian migrants to Serbia. These migrations take place from a majority (Romanians in Romania) towards a national minority (Romanians or Vlachs in Serbia), thus in an „opposite” direction. The migrations are not state supported and they are individual in most of the cases. I argue that the interwar migrations were state planned, being the result of the Yugoslav-Romanian School Convention from 1933; those taking place during communism were triggered, in many instances, by political reasons; while the post-communist migration was labour oriented.

Uzbekistan has been gradually integrating into the world economy since gaining its independence in 1991. The need to integrate stems from the desire to advance the national economy and social well-being of population through import of advanced technologies or stimulating exports. However, opening up the country also meant exposure to increase in the mobility of its human capital. As a result, Uzbekistan has witnessed labor migration in and out of the country during the past two decades, driven by various causes, which is having inevitable social and economic implications for the country. Intensifying processes in contemporary international labor market make migration as a mechanism, which has a back-to-back impact onto and from economic development of a country. From developing countries’ perspective, international labor migration is an instrument for reducing tension in national labor markets, decreasing high rates of unemployment and expanding sources of income. From developed countries’ perspective, international labor migration helps solve demographic problems like decreasing number of population, aging of population and shortage of labor force. Uzbekistan, in particular, is increasing its participation in the international labor market, especially it’s cooperation on migration with Russian Federation due to its high rate of population growth and young population.

Opis:
The whole 20th century was characterized by the phenomenon of mass migrations from Europe to North America, but the literature on this issue has proposed different and conflicting explanations on their causes and features. In any case, whatever interpretative approach we want to support, some consequences of this phenomenon are clear. In particular, it is evident how the immigrants have strongly affected the urban economic environment by acting as either business actors or labor force at the local markets. In particular, the presence of communities of immigrants or minority groups has often originated the birth of economic ethnic niches and specializations. Historians usually describe ethnic job and business peculiarities by referring to different cause-and-effect analyses. The core of the debate is the different evaluations of the importance given either to the ethnic/cultural factors that feature the different immigrant groups or to the structural factors that define the host society and/or the global market. Consistent with the foregoing discussion, this article aims to compare the theoretical frameworks on ethnic economic niching discussed in the literature. Moreover, in order to test the theoretical achievements, it focuses on the paradigmatic case study of the Italian economic niches in North America.

The advent of British Colonial rule in Nigeria transformed the traditional African society in a number of ways, some positive others negative. The initial policies adopted to integrate Nigerian into the British colonial system, however, proved a catalyst that triggered mass movement of people from rural to urban centers thereby creating as it were unexpected demographic dislocation. British development of communication and infrastructures such as railways and the network of road system was part of a deliberate policy to foster the growth of “legitimate trade” in the interior. The early imposition of tax regime in the Northern Protectorate induced people from the zone of taxation to migrate to tax free zones. The combination of abiding peace, agricultural export and modern communication system stimulated migration during British colonial administration in Nigeria. It is the conviction of the author that establishment of British rule had fundamental far-reaching effect on inter-ethnic mingling and migration. The paper examines the various policies of the British at the onset of colonial rule and the effect of these on inter-ethnic migration and mingling. Attempt is made to briefly define the two key words, migration and colonialism, in order to give better understanding to the work. The paper concludes that British colonial policies had profound effect on the people’s decision to leave home and migrate to zones of administrative and economic activities.

In Russia live more than 190 nations and ethnic groups (native and indigenous groups). Russia is also an attractive country for migrant workers. Because no knowledge of language and law in Russia, illegal immigrants are a source of many problems. According to statistics in the past few years, the number of crimes increased because of the immigrants. There are for example: deception, theft , vandalism, no proper documents. Experts predict that the flow of migrants in 2016 will increase because of the very complicated political and economic situation in the world. Migration within Russia and immigration to Russia causes a lot of tension and ethnic conflicts. Especially people from the North Caucasus and Central Asia are victims of the conflict against the national (ethnic). It should also be noted that some of the Russians do not realize that the Chechens, Dagestan, Ingush are Russian citizens, but they are treated as „foreign element”. the work has been exposed substrate contemporary ethnic conflicts in Russia, their process and ways to prevent them. For this purpose were analyzed legal acts, reports of NGOs (Non-Governmental Organization) and government on ethnic conflicts. Also, journal articles and relevant literature were reviewed, both Polish and Russian.

Opis:
This article examines the role of ethnic networks in the development of migrant communities by focusing on modern-day Armenian migration to Russia. While much existing research on migrant networks tends to focus on newly arrived migrants’ experiences of gaining support in the destination countries through ethnic networks, little has been said about the impact of ethnic networks on migrant community development. Additionally, studies on the Armenian communities’ development are mainly focused on the historical context and scholars see little interest in studying modern-day Armenian migration and migrant community development. Drawing on empirical data from Armenia, this study explores how post-Soviet migration to Russia shapes contemporary Armenian communities there. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research conducted in 2020−2021, the article studies the significance of ethnic networks at both individual and collective levels. The quantitative research results offer insights into the role of ethnic networks in shaping migratory routes, while qualitative research highlights how these networks contribute to community construction, driven by regional affiliations that differ from traditional Armenian diaspora institutions. The study reveals the multiple roles of ethnic networks, including their influence on migratory behaviour, their persistence and importance across generations and their impact on community organisations’ development and leadership. It also highlights migrants’ preferences for engaging with their regions or villages of origin.

Th e article presents the concept of “economisation of ethnicity” understood as a strategy of taking advantage of cultural resources of ethnic groups in conducting business activities. On the example of the Chinese and Indian communities it explores different ways and patterns of using ethnic cultural and ethnic social capital for the development of own enterprises. Such strategies involve for example: attracting ethnic customers, employing ethnic workers, offering ethnic goods. However, “economisation of ethnicity” means using ethnicity in a non-alienating manner. It includes also efforts of integration with the host society, for example good knowledge of Polish language and culture. The article is based on the official statistical data and results of the qualitative research conducted in years 2014–2017 within the grant project financed by the National Science Centre.

Opis:
Ethnic return migration is a widespread strategy for migrants from economically disadvantaged countries. This article is about those ethnic return migrants who might successfully migrate thanks to their ancestors; their decision is based upon economic, pragmatic or rationalistic incentives aside from their diasporic feeling of belonging. Although this phenomenon has already been studied, scholars still mostly refer only to the benefits proposed by immigration policy as a key to understanding it. The impact of policy in the country of emigration on ethnic return migration is understudied. This article fills this gap. I found that when the Soviet Union introduced an attractive policy for Ukrainians/Russians in terms of study or work opportunities and the inhabitants in the Ukrainian Soviet Republic were quick to proclaim themselves as Ukrainians or Russians, the dissolution of the Soviet Union quickly changed this motivation. Ukrainians with Czech ancestors started to aim at obtaining official status as Czech members of the diaspora because of the benefits proposed by the Czech government (mainly permanent residency). However, it is difficult to prove the required link to one’s Czech ancestors due to Soviet-era documents in which the column with the Czech nationality of people’s ancestors is often missing. These observations lead to the conclusion that an attractive immigration policy aimed at the diaspora should not be treated as the only comprehensive explanation for ethnic return migration. Ethnic policy in the country of emigration also shapes this kind of migration and – in this concrete case – could even discourage ethnic return migrants.

Opis:
The paper presents factors that lead to adaptive strategies which can be located on the continuum between isolation (ethnic enclaves) and assimilation in host countries. Adaptive strategies of migrants and their integration in host countries depend on: type of migration; origins of migration, kind of migration: family, group, individual, students, employees; qualifications of migrants; short- and long-term migration, etc. These strategies also depend on effective protection of human rights in host countries’ social policy and civil practice. By analysing and comparing the adaptive strategies utilised by different types of migrant in different host countries and coupling their choice with the actual social policy defining the scope of socio-cultural integration, it is possible to identify the objective and subjective factors that influence a successful model of a social or socio-cultural integration.

The article contains an analysis of the process of the Polish migration to Scotland after 2004 based on quantitative and qualitative methods. Migration is described in two basic dimensions: by defining the size of the flows, i.e. the inflow and outflow of migrants, and the number of foreigners in the country in a given time. In qualitative methods the key elements are motives, migration strategy, activities migrants engage in and mechanisms of integration with the local community. Such analyses carried out in the present article have been supplemented with an introductory description of possible British sources of information. A historical background of the Polish migration to Scotland has also been taken into consideration in the article, and so has the overall British context, which was indispensable in this case, as Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.

The article analyzes the ethno-demographic policy of the CPSU – CPU of the 60’s – 70’s of the twentieth century, which was guided by the priority of national unity of the entire Soviet people and neglected the value of the Ukrainian ethnic group and its national development. The state command-administrative system under the slogans of “proletarian internationalism”, “prosperity and rapprochement of nations in the USSR”, “formation of a new historical community – the Soviet people” pursued a policy of assimilation of the titular nation of the Ukrainian SSR. Demographic, economic and social processes that took place in the society of that time, especially decreased in some regions of the republic the number of indigenous peoples. The correlation of macro-processes (intra-republican and inter-republican migration) with internal micro-processes in Ukraine (enhanced russification, interethnic marriages, etc.) promoted assimilation, depopulation of Ukrainians and threatened their national future. The paper finds that in the conflict of unfavorable circumstances resulting from the Soviet assimilation policy, the number of the Ukrainian nation in the USSR slowed down, difficult, but did not grow in both quantitative and qualitative terms.

Migration flows force their participants to intentionally define themselves as members of a society with a particular national identity. Before these issues can be investigated, it is crucial to clarify the difference between an ethnic group and a national group. This is not as easy a task as it might seem. The authors of this paper have carried out a theoretical analysis of key terms defining changes within a population brought about by migration processes. The study will focus on terms which are crucial for this process – assimilation, acculturation and adaptation. For the purposes of this publication, the authors define these terms as reflecting the natural processes which inevitably, though with various pace and intensity, take place in immigrant communities, including Polish expat communities across the world.
