This paper deals with the issue of psychological essentialism as present in environmental studies. The essentialist belief—that is, the assumption that things have a deep essence that defines their stable identity—has been a recurring theme in environmental psychology. In this paper, I show its relevance for such research areas as environmental perception and the concept of place as a meaningful location. I show that essentialism underlies early phenomenological theories of place and is present in contemporary biophilic theories of environmental perception. I discuss relevant theories and present research findings that justify the claim that people are psychological essentialists when dealing with the physical built environment.

The present studies explore how activating concepts pertaining to the origins of interindividual differences affect the processing of stereotypical and counterstereotypical information. The concepts, i.e., nature and nurture, are both assumed to evoke similar stereotypical expectations although nurture implies greater flexibility. The studies show that stereotypical information enhances whereas counterstereotypical information diminishes stereotyping when nurture is activated. In contrast, counterstereotypical evidence challenges what activated nature would suggest and perceivers primed with nature evince stronger stereotyping when they encounter counterstereotypical information. The results also show that priming nature leads perceivers to attribute stereotype conformity to internal causes whereas nurture accredits conformity to situational constraints. Stereotype flexibility is associated with the subjective ease with which perceivers can both imagine counterstereotypical and mentally undo stereotypical evidence.

Étienne Gilson juxtaposes what he calls Aquinas’s “existentialism” to what he calls Scotus’s “essentialism.” For Gilson, “existentialism” is philosophical truth, the only view compatible with an authentically Christian metaphysic, while “essentialism” is a Hellenic mistake that seduces Christian philosophers by appealing to the idolatrous desire to reduce reality to what is intelligible. In this paper, the author attempts to describe the difference between “essentialism” and “existentialism” as understood by Gilson. Then, he assesses the case for attributing “essentialism” to Scotus, based on an assessment of Scotus texts and secondary scholarship.

The main question of the text concerns the status of value in Georg Simmel’s thinking. According toSimmel, values are submitted to “idealization,” which can be considered a kind of “constructed essentialism.”Together with the concept of construction, “constructed essentialism” first appeared implicitly in Kant’s theseson the human rational equipment containing necessary inborn dispositions and, particularly, in his theses ontranscendental schematism. However, it was Fichte and Schelling who applied the term “construction” to thedescription of cognitive processes. In his theses concerning the idealization of values as conventionally accepted,socially and economically constructed relations, Simmel refers to the anthropological, cognitive equipment: tothe human propensity to seek patterns, ideals, and even ideas. Such a formulation of the process of idealizationspreads Simmel’s concept of value dialectically between constructivism and anthropological essentialism.

The author of the article posits the monograph in question within the continuum of contemporary feminist thought and sees it as an instance of redefining essentialism. What, as the author suggests, seems the most worthwhile about Szopa’s book is inscribing Luce Irigaray’s thought in feminist materialism, aside from the literary scholarship of the author adding value to her critical adroitness.

The paper aims at reconstructing Karl R. Popper's critical standpoint with regard to essentialism, as antiessentialism is the main presupposition of his antidefinitionism. Popper criticised essentialism for claiming that it is justified to apply the concept of things' essential properties within the procedure of scientific explanation. He argued that the essentialists' ”faith in essence” is not scientific because of the lack of a criterion which would allow us to tell whether a certain definition grasps the essential properties of a given object. He doubted also that it is justified to apply the concept of intellectual intuition to the procedure of scientific explanation. Popper claimed that falsificationism gives a better concept of explanation, than that motivated by essentialism. He was convinced that falsificationism is logically more correct and more appropriately describes the real practice of scientists.

Tearing Off the Masks: Narratives on Jewish CommunistsThe paper presents an analysis of the contemporary Polish debate on Jewish communists. The analysis was performed in the framework of colonialist theories. I deconstructed narrations about Jewish communists, which belong in the Polish political mainstream, and are regarded as moderate, objective and devoid of any ideology. The tropes shared by the colonialist discourse and the debate on Jewish communists are: orientalisation, eroticisation, infantilisation, presenting the object of research outside the historical context, abolishing the context of social and political inequalities, and declaring the victims guilty of the violence they experience. Zdzieranie masek. Sposoby pisania o żydowskich komunistachNiniejszy tekst jest próbą analizy współczesnego polskiego dyskursu o żydowskich komunistach za pomocą narzędzi wypracowanych przez badaczki i badaczy dyskursów kolonialnych. Dekonstruowane tutaj narracje o żydowskich komunistach przynależą do głównego nurtu polskiej sfery publicznej i postrzegane są w jego obrębie jako eksperckie, wyważone, niepodporządkowane żadnej ideologii. Tropami, które łączą dyskurs kolonialny i dyskurs o żydowskich komunistach, są między innymi: orientalizacja, erotyzacja, infantylizacja, prezentacja przedmiotu badań poza kontekstem historycznym, unieważnienie kontekstu politycznych i społecznych nierówności, wreszcie obarczenie opisywanych winą za przemoc, której doświadczają.

The paper is an attempt to defend the Chisholm's metaphysical doctrine called mereological essentialism. The main thesis of mereological essentialism states that for any objects x and y - if x is ever a part of y, then y is necessarily such that x is a part of y, i.e. that all parts of y are essential to it (y has them at any time that y exists). This radical theory gives a categorisation of all objects via entia per se and entia successiva. The paper contains a critical survey of the theory of mereological essentialism: it deals with some important arguments against it and answers as well. The author tries to show that in defence of the theory and the categorisation in question the applicability of the doctrine of mereological essentialism must be somehow limited. He suggests that the best way in doing so is to restrict theses of mereological essentialism either only to objects qua occurrents or only to objects qua continuants or only to persons.

The text consists of the excerpts from a book “Unfinished Dialogue” by Isaiah Berlin and Beata Polanowska-Sygulska published in New York in 2006. The passages include one of the letters that the British philosopher wrote to Beata Polanowska-Sygulska in 1986, printed earlier in „The New York Review of Books”, and a transcript from a discussion between Isaiah Berlin, Beata Polanowska-Sygulska and John Gray that took place in 1988.

The article poses the question on conditio humana on the background of conflict between the two ideological orientation of our time: constructivism and essentialism. The first orientation continues the project of human emancipation, whose initial ideas shaped the Enlightenment. In this framework, the man is a constructor of his world. The second orientation includes a number of traditions and paradigms, describing the man as irrevocably immersed in the world of standards and truths derived from the non-human reality. The author reflects on the implications of the this ideological conflict to our ideas of man as a creature of special moral status.

W poniższym artykule przedstawiam dane na poparcie twierdzenia o wpływie naukowych opisów grup społecznych na same te grupy oraz na badane zjawiska mentalne. Zarówno w nauce, jak i w popularnym przekazie medialnym powszechna jest kontrowersyjna hipoteza o istnieniu głęboko zakorzenionych różnic między mózgami mężczyzn i kobiet, które przyczyniają się do powstawania różnic w zachowaniach typowych dla danej płci. Przedstawiam dowody na to, że takie stwierdzenia, niezależnie od ich zasadności naukowej, mogą podtrzymywać istnienie różnic płciowych, które mają wyjaśniać. Przekonuję, że choć potrzeba dalszych badań, powyższe twierdzenia mogą stać się samospełniającą się przepowiednią, oddziałując na odbiór społeczny, zachowania oraz nastawienie. Rzeczywisty wpływ efektów badań naukowych na nasze umysły i społeczeństwo oraz to, że wszystkie hipotezy naukowe podlegają dyskusji i podważaniu, wskazuje na potrzebę rozważenia przez naukowców etycznych implikacji ich pracy.
In this article I flesh out support for observations that scientific accounts of social groups can influence the very groups and mental phenomena under investigation. The controversial hypothesis that there are hardwired differences between the brains of males and females that contribute to sex differences in gender-typed behaviour is common in both the scientific and popular media. Here I present evidence that such claims, quite independently of their scientific validity, have scope to sustain the very sex differences they seek to explain. I argue that, while further research is required, such claims can have self-fulfilling effects via their influence on social perception, behaviour and attitudes. The real effects of the products of scientists’ research on our minds and society, together with the fact that all scientific hypotheses are subject to dispute and disconfirmation, point to a need for scientists to consider the ethical implications of their work.

W literaturze teoretycznoprawnej pojawiają się koncepcje które w spójny sposób chcą łączyć rodzaje naturalne z semantyką języka prawnego (M. Moore, D. Brink, N. Stavropoulos). Motywacją dla tworzenia takich teorii jest chęć uzyskania takiej semantyki dla języka prawnego która będzie realistyczna. Semantyka taka ma umożliwić sformułowanie koncepcji zdeterminowania lub obiektywności. Bardzo często, wobec oczywistego zarzutu kierowanego do takich teorii, że terminy prawne nie korespondują z żadnymi obiektami w świecie, liberalizuje się pojęcie istnienia obiektów dla danej teorii. Celem niniejszego artykułu będzie analiza takich koncepcji oraz próba pokazania, że z natury terminów prawnych wprost wynika niemożliwość budowy obiektywnego dyskursu dla takich terminów (gdzie obiektywność rozumiana jest jako obiektywność w sensie naukowym). Niezależnie od tego, możemy formułować dyskurs który będzie obiektywny, ale obiektywność dyskursu będzie pochodziła raczej od metod konstruowania jego obiektów a nie od (niezależności) ich natury.
In the theoretical legal literature there are views that consistently want to combine natural kinds with semantics of legal language (M. Moore, D. Brink, N. Stavropoulos). The motivation for creating such a theories is the desire to get the semantics of the legal language to be realistic. This semantics should enable the formulation of an objective theory of legal determination. Very often, the obvious objection to such theories is that the legal terms do not correspond to any objects in the world. The purpose of this article is to examine these ideas and attempt to show that the nature of the legal terms directly shows the impossibility of building an objective discourse for such terms (where objectivity is understood as objectivity in the scientific sense). Regardless, such theories can be formulated and treated as objective but the objectivity of those theories will come from methods of construction of the objects and not from their nature.
