Opis:
The key issue of the analysis, concentrated on the dystopia by Juan Goytisolo, Makbara, is the condition of human sexual body which, in terms proposed by Baudrillard, can be qualified as post-orgiastic. While an asexual, aseptic social system is created in the modern, civilized Europe, Morocco seems to be the last refuge not only for the marginalized sexuality, but also for the romantic dreams about marriage. Nonetheless, the Moroccan promise of authentic eroticism acquires a necrophilic flavour of “love at the cemetery”. In the conclusion, Goytisolo is shown as the advocate of a dying, spectral culture, victim of unceasing, manifold exploitation and unable to counterbalance the European symbolic and economic predominance in the Mediterranean.

The article is a proposal for a new interpretation of Herbert’s erotic poems from a collection entitled Podwójny oddech [Double Breath], whose illegal publication caused confusion among readers and literary scholars. In addition to legal matters, the discussion also concerned the artistic level of this collection of poetry. The author draws attention firstly – to the conscious compositional idea in the Podwójny oddech, secondly – to a series of intertextual references that testify to the poet’s reading, thirdly – to the poet’s attempt to find the proper poetic language to express the love experiences and fourthly – to a specific, shaped by religious schemes, philosophy of love.

Since the beginning of the cinematographic industry there has been a visible interest in exploring two themes: death and sex, whereas the motif of dying and sexuality/eroticism seem to be mutually exclusive in mainstream movies to such extent that they rarely appear together on the screen. To shed some light on this cinema tendency of separating eroticism from dying we investigate some of the factors of the phenomenon as well as the ones that could have contributed to the shift we have noticed. The majority of films devoted to the subject of dying and eroticism concentrate on a very limited range of visual and narrative schemes. In our paper we present the main clichés, plot and visual schemes, motifs and narrative techniques in contemporary cinema. Although the unique power of the cinema is “matter of making images seen”, it could be argued that the cinema uses not only the command ‘open your eyes to’, but also the command ‘close your eyes to’. In this way, audiovisual culture closes its eye to the entwinement of the motif of dying with the themes of eroticism.

Georges Bataille and Hubert Aquin both explore a mystical experience displaying strong similarities, related to what Roger Caillois called « left sacred », that is the impure, malefic sacred, which is accessible by transgression and corresponds to the privileged moment of unity between people. For Bataille, God is absent, even dead: Lamma sabachtani is no longer a question but an assertion in his essays. The object of his new mystical theology is not God, but « the unknown». The divine is reduced to the human, transcendence to immanence. The goal is to free the mystical experience from its religious background and to make ecstasy accessible to every-one. It is precisely by communicating that men can break their isolation and unite themselves with others. « Eroticism of bodies » and « eroticism of hearts » are two of the experiences proposed by Bataille which lead to the sacred. Hubert Aquin is also fascinated by the « left sacred », by eroticism in particular, but it represents for him a temptation which eliminates from the « right sacred » Jesus Christ and perfection He is, for Aquin, the absolute corresponding to the communion between the human being and the Son of God ; it consists in being reborn and in living in “the Christ of the Revelation”.

This paper analyses the linguistic structure, creative modes of expression and stylistic properties of Miguel Ángel Asturias’s Legends of Guatemala (Leyendas de Guatemala, 1930). Furthermore, it attempts to classify Asturias’s prose fiction, which is often multifaceted, by defining the unique character of its complex linguistic mechanisms that create his debut short-story collection. All texts in Legends contain references not only to events of the Mayan cosmogony, mythological tropes and motifs (that have been developed and put into a new context), but also to their mimetic relationship with the ritual language used in the Popol Vuh. The word order variations and certain combinations of vowels and consonants, as well as the specific syntactic parallelisms and enumerations (stylistic and lexical “props”) imitate formulaic phrases which are important elements in oral style. Pre-Columbian themes – especially those chosen by the Guatemalan writer for the narrative content of his works – are full of visual symbols with rich folk meanings; the melodic sound of Asturias’s narration (and its internal rhythm) seems attuned to the worldview belonging to both particular and universal human communities.

The article attempts to analyze the poetry of Katarzyna Fetlińska with the main stress laid upon her volume Sekstaśmy (Sex Tapes). The author tries to verify critical tracks and generalizations, introduced mostly by editorial and publishing descriptions which promote the collection. He exposes the importance of dramatic and surprisingly non-ironic themes chosen by the poet, who confronts herself with the most tragic aspects of human existence: loneliness and death. The main theme of the sketch is eroticism, sexuality and even pornographic character of her poetry, directed against metaphysically scandalous friability of interpersonal relations, human objectification and nothingness of being.

The article concerns Thomas Mann’s view on culture and on anthropology. The analyses of the works by the German writer point at the relations between his conception and Fridrich Schiller’s conception of man as a sensuous and sprititual being. Mann’s works, such as Death in Venice or The Magic Mountain are the literary equivalent of the unfinished essay on aesthetics On Spirit and Art. The author stresses the important role of eroticism in the description of culture. Eroticism should be conceived in a wide sense, not only in relation to bodily desire, but as a basis of aesthetic experience. Seen from this angle, Mann’s writings contain a series of reflections about culture and about man, reflections rooted in the modern conceptions presented by Kant and Schiller and later developed by contemporary psychoanalysis and the philosophy of existence.

The Children’s Room. The intrusive dialogues behind the scenes of the puppet theatre are bitter sarcasm, directed at both the reader of the drama and the author himself. The reader, immersed in the reading, becomes one of the author-hero’s playthings, who observes the course of erotic fantasies that, let us repeat, happen ‚behind the scenes’. Sexuality is an intrusive force that organises and influences a person’s life and feelings. It clutters his head. „Intrusive thoughts. On Emil Zegadłowicz’s The Children’s Room” is an interpretation of the work, with particular attention paid to the way eroticism functions in it, „sexual obsessions” and the introduction of the poetics of scandal.
"Pokój dziecinny" to gorzki sarkazm, skierowany zarówno do czytelnika dramatu, jak i do samego autora. Czytelnik pogrążony w lekturze staje się jedną z zabawek autora-bohatera, obserwującego fantazje erotyczne, które dzieją się „za kulisami”. Seksualność to natrętna siła, która organizuje życie i uczucia danej osoby oraz wpływa na nią. Zaśmieca mu głowę. "Natrętne myśli" nad „Pokojem dziecinnym” Emila Zegadłowicza to interpretacja dzieła, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobu, w jaki funkcjonuje w nim erotyka, „obsesje seksualne” i wprowadzenie poetyki skandalu.

W niniejszym tekście podejmuję się analizy literackich i filozoficznych podobieństw, jakie występują pomiędzy dwoma z pozoru całkowicie różnymi pisarzami: Fiodorem Dostojewskim i Georges’em Bataille’em. Badam przede wszystkim związki między transgresją normatywnych kodów kulturowych a poczuciem spełnienia i autentyczności egzystencji, której poszukują tzw. negatywni bohaterowie Dostojewskiego i które można problematyzować w kontekście filozofii Georges’a Bataille’a. Wszystkie śledzone przeze mnie wątki z Dostojewskiego odnajdują się na osi kategorii: erotyzm-zło-intensywność (autentyczność) i wpisują w problem mrocznej satysfakcji, jakiej doznaje jednostka w aktach przemocy i okrucieństwa wobec innych, samozatraty, doświadczenia wyniszczającej miłości, konfrontacji z ekstremalnym ryzykiem oraz samo-upodlenia i duchowej ruiny, którą waloryzuje się wyżej od harmonijnego i spokojnego życia. Moje dociekania sytuują się na pograniczu literaturoznawstwa i filozofii, chociaż to właśnie filozoficzna bliskość Dostojewskiego i Bataille’a interesuje mnie najbardziej. Z tego powodu umieszczam na marginesie ideologiczne i literackie konteksty stojące za kreacjami rosyjskiego pisarza, skupiając się bardziej na egzystencjalno-psychologicznym wymiarze jego dzieła, który Lew Szestow określił swego czasu mianem „filozofii podziemia” – filozofii tragedii i beznadziei w obliczu paradoksalnej natury człowieka. Ostatecznie, moje analizy mają w zamierzeniu pokazać Dostojewskiego jako wielkiego „nieobecnego” Batraille’owskiej „filozofii bliskości”.
The following paper is an attempt at a comprehensive analysis of literary and philosophical congruences between seemingly distant writers: Fyodor Dostoevsky and Georges Bataille. I want to investigate here the question considered in both of the authors’ works, and concerning the relation between transgression of normative cultural codes and the sense of fulfillment and authenticity of existence. I discuss numerous ideas, motives and imageries essential in Dostoevsky in order then to problematize them from the perspective of Bataille’s philosophy. The article builds on the axis of categories such as eroticism – evil – intensity (authenticity) and extracts from the works of Dostoevsky and Bataille the idea of an eerie satisfaction awaken in man by acts of violence and cruelty; loss of self, ruination in love, confrontation with deadly risk, self-depreciation, and spiritual laceration preferred over a life in harmony. The study is situated at the crossroads of literary studies and philosophy, nevertheless it is the philosophical proximity of these two figures that interests me the most. Therefore I am less interested in purely Russian, historical, ideological and literary contexts that stand behind Dostoevsky’s literary creations than the existential and psychological aspect of his oeuvre which Lev Shestov characterized as a “philosophy of the underground” – philosophy of tragedy and hopelessness in the face of human paradoxical nature. In the final instance, my investigation is expected to present Bataille as a figure essentially lacking, or rather never sufficiently admitted, within Bataille’s philosophical thought.

My paper discusses the idea of destructive eroticism in the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Eros is posited here as manifesting in two, opposite forms: the Christian virtue of agape consisting in a humble service to a beloved person, and the Greek eros which in Dostoevsky is transformed into destructive love, one steeped in egoism and sadistic-masochistic impulses. I want to argue that destructive eroticism is for Dostoevsky of greatest interest, while love conceived as agape serves in his work only as a minor, normative projection, a tribute paid to the Russian Orthodox worldview. In my analysis I refer to Georges Bataille’s philosophical thought to combine the pattern of unfulfilled and ruinous love in Dostoevsky with his conviction that irrational aspects of man, his penchant to evil and transgression can be seen as a measure of the intensity and authenticity of one’s spiritual life. Contrary to religious interpretations of Dostoevsky, I argue that the author of Crime and Punishment prefers to cast his protagonists into the limbo of suffering, anguish and distress and therefore he ultimately rejects the possibility that human beings can content themselves with a mediocre life in which existential complacency is bought at a price of resignation from dangerous passions of which one could say that were “worth a life”.

Głównym temat artykułu jest próba przyjrzenia się kinu polskiemu czasów przełomu w kontekście licznie pojawiających się w nim odniesień do tematyki erotycznej i scen nagości. Druga połowa lat 80. i początek lat 90. to bowiem w Polsce okres silnej pornografizacji rodzimej kultury popularnej. Z jednej strony zjawisko to może świadczyć o trwającej wówczas w naszym kraju transformacji ustrojowej i dynamicznie zmieniającej się wtedy sytuacji społecznej, obyczajowej czy politycznej. Z drugiej natomiast można je bez trudu powiązać także z wpływami zachodnich tekstów popkultury (np. kaset wideo czy pism zawierających treści pornograficzne), które coraz śmielej zaczęły przenikać w tamtym okresie do Polski. W rezultacie trwająca wtedy na Zachodzie tzw. druga fala porno-chicu w wyraźny sposób wywarła również wpływ na kształt rodzimego kina, stając się tym samym jednym z ważniejszych katalizatorów rozpoczynającej się wówczas w Polsce rewolucji wyobraźni. W niniejszym artykule analizie zostały więc poddane wybrane zjawiska, które mogłyby świadczyć o na pewno znaczącej, choć nie do końca jednorodnej roli, jaką nagość i erotyka odgrywały w kinie i kulturze polskiej tego okresu. Pokrótce zostały także omówione najważniejsze mechanizmy społeczne, polityczne i kulturowe, które decydowały o kształcie ówczesnej twórczości filmowej.
The main subject of the article is an attempt to look at the Polish cinema of the time of the transformation in the context of numerous references to erotic themes and nudity on screen. The second half of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s is in Poland a period of growing pornographic trend of native popular culture. On the one hand, this phenomenon may testify to the ongoing political transformation in our country and the dynamically changing social, moral or political situation. On the other hand, it can be easily associated with the influences of Western pop-culture texts (e.g. video cassettes or magazines containing pornographic content), which more and more boldly began to penetrate Poland at that time. As a result, the so-called second wave of porn-chic clearly influenced the shape of the native cinema, becoming one of the most important catalysts of the revolution of the imagination that started in Poland at that time. In this article, selected phenomena have been analyzed, which could certainly indicate a significant, though not entirely homogeneous role, which nudity and eroticism played in Polish cinema and culture of that period. The most important social, political and cultural mechanisms that determined the shape of the films being made at the time, are also briefly considered.

Museum as a temple of eroticism culture as a source of delight the origin and causes of existence of the european museums of erotic artThe first museum similar to those we know today, was founded in the late seventeenth century. Half a century later archeologists discovered collections of erotic art in Pompeii and Herculaneum, lying for centuries under the ashes of Vesuvius, which surprised the scientific Enlightenment enthusiasts with its sensuality. There was a problem, what to do in a museum with exhibits, of undoubted historical value, or artistic, but obscene? The first response was to create secret museums in which objects with erotic connotations would be stored, or even concealed. The need to separate objects that could not be shown to the public from the rest of the collection, led to the modern understanding of the word pornography, which was adopted for the determination of uncomfortable harvest of Vesuvian cities. For the second response we had to wait for over 200 years – sex themed museums. Over the past 25 years, 16 institutions of this kind were created in Europe, out of which 11 continue to operate until today. One of them is located in Warsaw. Another may soon arise in Krakow. All of these are private initiatives, most of them with non-profit intentions, and the primary motivation for their creation was the passion of the founders and their possession of a collection of sexually marked objects, often collected by them over a few decades. The elaboration of this article constitutes the subject-matter of the author’s thesis which he defended in 2010 in the department of culture management at the Jagiellonian University; the thesis was titled Museum of eroticism, eroticism of museum. Historical context, review and analysis of European sex themed museums, which was created under the supervision of Professor Emil Orzechowski Ph.D.

A linguistic picture of the world is such a vision of reality existing in the minds of people forming a language community which is fixed in words. The results of empirical research presented in this paper lead to the conclusion that no elements of the so-called striptease culture or confessing culture, or the phenomena of de-tabooisation or eroticisation, perceived as inherent traits of the contemporary mass culture, are observed within the love and eroticism prototypes – components of the linguistic world view of the women in early adulthood examined in this study.
Językowy obraz świata stanowi utrwaloną w słowach taką wizję rzeczywistości, jaka istnieje w świadomości osób stanowiących wspólnotę językową. Zaprezentowane w niniejszym tekście wyniki badań empirycznych prowadzą do spostrzeżenia, iż w obrębie prototypu zarówno miłości, jak i erotyzmu – wycinków językowego obrazu świata objętych badaniami kobiet w wieku wczesnej dorosłości – nie zauważa się ani elementów tzw. kultury obnażania czy kultury zwierzeń, ani zjawiska detabuizacji i zerotyzowania, które są postrzegane jako immanentne właściwości współczesnej kultury masowej.

This paper deals with the motifs of eroticism in the story Lilika by Dragoslav Mihailović, in the context of the growing up and maturing of the young ten-year-old heroine. The erotic in this story is brought down to the level of pornography – animal instincts in the scenes of the girl’s drunken mother and stepfather grabbing each other by the arms and legs in front of the child, slipping hands under the skirt, chasing each other with knives and pushing their tongues into each other’s mouth. They stretch the sphere of eroticism to extremes, which is, in this case, thanatically tainted. And such a bestial life that is led by the stepfather and the mother is not far from true violence over the ten-year-old girl, who is beaten and tied to a bed by the parents; and apart from the physical abuse, whose effects are frequent blood spots and bruises under Lilika’s eyes and uncontrolled night urination, there is an additional passive kind of violence towards the girl – ignoring and neglecting her. In a series of circumstances in which she finds herself unwillingly, there forms an inner framework of the heroine’s unhappy childhood, whose basic problem was posed already at her very birth, and it is the question of her identity.
