Opis:
We give the relationship between regular continued fractions and Lehner fractions, using a procedure known as insertion}. Starting from the regular continued fraction expansion of any real irrational x, when the maximal number of insertions is applied one obtains the Lehner fraction of x. Insertions (and singularizations) show how these (and other) continued fraction expansions are related. We also investigate the relation between Lehner fractions and the Farey expansion (also known as the full continued fraction), and obtain the ergodic system underlying the Farey expansion.

Let $(X_j)$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed random operators on a Banach space. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the Abel means of $X_n...X_2 X_1$ to belong to Hardy and Lipschitz spaces a.s. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the Fourier coefficients of random Taylor series with bounded martingale coefficients to belong to Lipschitz and Bergman spaces.

We prove that for a certain class of $ℤ^d$ shifts of finite type with positive topological entropy there is always an invariant measure, with entropy arbitrarily close to the topological entropy, that has strong metric mixing properties. With the additional assumption that there are dense periodic orbits, one can ensure that this measure is Bernoulli.

We discuss basic notions of the ergodic theory approach to chaos. Based on simple examples we show some characteristic features of ergodic and mixing behaviour. Then we investigate an infinite dimensional model (delay differential equation) of erythropoiesis (red blood cell production process) formulated by Lasota. We show its computational analysis on the previously presented theory and examples. Our calculations suggest that the infinite dimensional model considered possesses an attractor of a nonsimple structure, supporting an invariant mixing measure. This observation verifies Lasota's conjecture concerning nontrivial ergodic properties of the model.

Opis:
All physical processes are deterministic de iure. Physicists speak about different types of determinism of physical processes, depending on the degree with which their course can be anticipated. Usually, the course of ergodic processes can be predicted with less certainty than the non-ergodic ones, the latter being integrable. Recent measurements of motions of single particles in composite systems, especially in living biological cells, show that such motions are, in most cases, breaking the Boltzmann’s ergodic hypothesis. On the other hand, their trajectories are random, i.e., one cannot know a priori where the particle will be even in near future. This leads to conclusion that many existing in nature processes are nonergodic but not integrable, therefore predictable only in the mean, representing still other type of determinism.

The author provides an overview of some main ideas and methods developed in the study of asymptotic behavior of Markov operators, and the following three properties of a Markov operator P are considered: (1) Asymptotic stability, (2) Asymptotic periodicity, (3) Sweeping with respect to a family A0⊂A: lim∫APnfdm=0 for all AA0 and fD. Applications of these results appear in the study of locally expanding mappings (on intervals, on the real line and on manifolds), integral operators (especially of Volterra types), dynamical systems with stochastic perturbations, and evolution equations. In an excellent book by the author and M. C. Mackey [Chaos, fractals, and noise, Second edition, Springer, New York, 1994; MR1244104], these and many more related results are presented in much more detail. The last section of the present paper concerns Markov operators acting on finite Borel measures on a Polish metric space. The author shows how this result yields insight into attractors of iterated function systems: they appear to be supports of invariant measures of corresponding Markov operators. The paper is the Wacław Sierpiński Lecture for the year 2002.
