When embarking on a journey towards the constitution of epistemological semanticsone needs to describe clearly the key term ’epistemic’ and differentiate between this term and the term ’cognitive’, which has been used so far, but has in time become ambiguous. The author of this article does not present the history of using these terms. Instead he undertakes to clarify the term ’epistemic’ in order to enable himself to operate on problems linked with making epistemological semantics legitimate, including the problem of using specialized neologisms.

This paper addresses the role of epistemology in relation to the bond formation and cohesion of religious groups. Using the theoretical framework outlined by Stephan Fuchs, the author shows that epistemology can be interpreted in a twofold manner. First, it may be an outcome of social relations (cohesive groups produce more realism internally, less cohesive groups generate more constructivism and relativism). Second, conscious use of epistemology can also be an element that stabilizes or destabilizes groups and thus becomes a tool to influence group cohesion. A reflective approach to the social role of epistemology may prove to be an interesting path for sociology of religion in its inquiry into various religious phenomena, such as the rise of religious radicalism or secularization.

In the present contribution, which follows on from the discussion already initiated, problems of profiling the bilingual discourse of understanding are discussed. Aspects of the shaping of the discourse are addressed on the basis of previously undiscussed evidence from the bilingual journal “Region”. The discourse makes an original contribution to reconciliation between the Germans and the Poles. The discourse is profiled in a specific way. In the discourse under investigation, aspects are addressed that concern Germans and Poles in mutual contact.

Opis:
Rationality, intersubjectivity, and objectivity have been conceived as primary epistemological categories from the begining of modern epoch. They characterize knowledge or subjects of knowledge, or even their activity - cognition. Epistemocentrism - in P. Bourdieu view typical to modern thinking - and supporting it epistemological fundamentalism are nothing else but limitation of the meaning of these categories. In the bygone times, epistemocentrism was useful, but now is a simply anachronism in the face of modern roles of knowledge in societies and in the face of growing progress of social sciences. Today, science and its contribution in the social worlds are not the same as once. Therefore, the need arises for revision of epistemocentrism as well as for the fulfillment of the 'epistemological gap' which emerged from collapse of epistemological fundamentalism. I think that there is a room for the new 'philosophical partition of reality' emancipated from Cartesian despotism of ego cogito and recovering intuitional insights in the social life of the ancient thinkers as Aristotle. In the paper, I concentrate on thesis that epistemocentrism is an epistemological obstacle in the social sciences and source of their crises.

Tytułowe pytanie jest w równym stopniu problematyczne, jak i zasadne, dlatego też moim celem będzie próba ujęcia tego zagadnienia z dwóch teoretycznie odmiennych pozycji – realisty i konstruktywisty epistemologicznego. W końcowej części tekstu spróbuję jednak nakreślić możliwości godzenia postawy parezjasty z akceptacją dla stanowiska relatywistycznego.
The article aspires to provide the reader with the answer to the relevant question whether a relativist can be a parrhesiast. This is a complicated question, because parrhesia implies ethical commitment, which from the relative point of view is difficult to justify. I present two different philosophical perspectives (epistemological realism and radical relativism) as two possible approaches to the main problem.

At the foundation of systematic thinking lie decisive assumptions that cannot be articulated and treated in a theoretical manner. Nonetheless, they are settled practically and metaphorically to orient and provoke the systematic attempts of philosophy. This field of non-theoretical assumptions is the theme of this paper. In the following, I articulate one specific metaphorical and practical answer that defies theoretical and systematic treatment. While it is among the most fundamental and fatal answers that can ever be ventured in the entire field of systematic thinking, they cannot occupy center-stage in theoretical thinking. The problematic concerns the pragmatic or absolute establishment of the edifice of philosophy. In the following, I try to portray a fundamental but irresolvable conflict in a back-and-forth movement between rival answers given to this problematic. This investigation concludes by emphasizing the irremediable failure to settle, once and for all, the conflict portrayed between the two opposed designations of philosophy in principle.

This paper discusses judicial duty of improving the law on epistemic grounds and claims in that regarding this obligation, it is possible to give a place to free speech from an epistemic point of view. As a requirement of having epistemic agency, judges like other human beings have epistemological responsibility. Different from the others’ responsibility, judges’ responsibility is connected to their duty of improving the law, which is required by their job as well as the idea of the rule of law and judicial professional principles. Judges should improve the law’s capacity to guide the conduct of its citizens, who are obligated to obey the law. Improving the law also improves the delivery of justice. The ways of legal interpretation and justification are important to improve it. While applying the law, judges can find the law unclear or they may encounter some norm conflicts. In these cases, they should resolve them to keep the law ‘legally in good shape’, which should meet epistemological requirements. When fulfilling this obligation, judicial free speech on epistemic grounds should not be limited.

Theoretical framework within which this paper is set is the conception of teachers’ epistemological beliefs. The author’s attention is focused on the classification of teachers’ beliefs in the realistic, contextual and relativistic approach. The question that permeates this study is whether the teacher’s beliefs are consistent with their work in practice. A questionnaire was made for the purpose of the research and the sample encompasses 420 teachers in Serbia. Results show that the subjects mostly estimate that they belong to a constructivist profile. However, their answers indicate that their acting is different from their self-assessment. Research findings imply a need for an awakening of teachers with regards to personal epistemologies.

The paper concerns the psychoanalysis of objective cognition - a philosophical project by Gaston Bachelard, developed and implemented in epistemology and philosophy of science since 1938. The paper consists of two parts. Firstly, relation between Bachelard’s philosophy and psychoanalysis is addressed with the special attention given to sources of Bachelard’s inspiration - S. Freud, C.G. Jung, M. Bonaparte and R. Allendy. Secondly, Bachelard’s concept of psychoanalysis of objective cognition is discussed. In the course of its development, Bachelard transformed the assumptions and ideas of Freud and Jung and used them in theory of knowledge and philosophy of science. This original project was straightforwardly practical - it was aimed at providing an analysis of the scientific mind, revealing any epistemological obstacles it contains (such as false beliefs and habits of thinking) and its overcoming so that valuable cognition might be obtained.
