    Introduction: In this article, selected issues concerning sanitary and epidemiological surveillance in post-war Poland (until 1989) have been described. Sanitary problems which occurred in Poland directly after the Second World War and the development of infectious diseases’ epidemiology have been included. Purpose: To summarize the establishment, development and modification of sanitary and epidemiological structures, the introduction of vaccinations as well as other medical means of overcoming infectious diseases, improving people’s living conditions and health situation. Materials and methods: Literature related to the topic and archival materials from the Voivodeship Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Gdansk were used. Archives included a vaccination programme valid between 1975 and 1989 and a two-week specimen report concerning morbidity rates of infectious diseases and chemical poisoning. Results: Thanks to the archival materials, issues concerning infectious diseases were emphasized. The the utilized literature brought out the National Institute’s for Public Health role as an authority in the cooperation with other healthcare institutions, influenced the formation and organization of sanitary and epidemiological service in Poland. Conclusions: The historical background of this text has been presented as a secondary subject, however, the years 1945-1989 comprising the time-frame of this article were a period of great changes. One of them was the formation of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance.

    Poland as a WHO member state is obliged to implement the requirements established by WHO regulations in 2005 in the form of a document entitled IHR 2005 (International Health Regulation 2005). The implementation of the procedures of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, HACCP on ships and vessels belonging to the domestic fleet is the first step towards the implementation of procedures resulting from IHR 2005.

    The article refers to the issues of ensuring the safety of husbandry in the face of the occurrence of diseases and the role of the district veterinarian. Preventing and combating of infectious diseases in animals is essential obligation of the state in terms of its administrative activities. The paper presents the basic national regulations on prevention of infectious diseases in animals in connection with the activities of a veterinarian. It was found that the regulations create the wide cooperation of animal owners with the veterinarian in both the combat against infectious diseases and their prevention. It has been noted that effective enforcement of the orders and prohibitions in this area contributes to improved bioasecuration on the farm, thus ensuring its economic viability.

    Jednym z priorytetów nowoczesnej medycyny jest nadzór nad zakażeniami, rozumiany jako aktywna profilaktyka i ograniczanie ryzyka rozwoju zakażeń u pacjentów. Nadzór ten jest szczególnie ważny na wysokospecjalistycznych oddziałach zabiegowych, oddziałach intensywnej terapii, oddziałach neonatologicznych czy dializacyjnych i internistycznych. Częstość występowania zakażeń szpitalnych świadczy o jakości i bezpieczeństwie opieki medycznej. Pomimo dynamicznego wzrostu świadomości zarówno personelu medycznego, jak i społeczeństwa, a także techniki świadczonych usług medycznych problem zakażeń szpitalnych nie maleje i dotyczy wszystkich szpitali na całym świecie. Ważne jest, aby na każdym szczeblu powstawania i rejestracji zakażeń szpitalnych powstawały programy naprawcze do zapobiegania i minimalizowania zakażeń, a idealne byłoby całkowite wyeliminowanie tego problemu. Służbą powołaną do nadzoru nad podejmowaniem działań zapobiegających szerzeniu się zakażeń i chorób zakaźnych jest Państwowa Inspekcja Sanitarna.
    One of the priorities of modern medicine is the surveillance of infections, understood as active prevention and reducing the risk of developing infections in patients. This supervision is particularly important in highly specialist treatment departments, intensive care units, neonatal or dialysis and internist departments. The incidence of nosocomial infections indicates the quality and safety of medical care. Despite the rapid increase in the awareness of both medical staff and the public, as well as the techniques of medical services, the problem of nosocomial infections does not decrease and applies to all hospitals around the world. It is important that corrective programs to prevent and minimize infections are created at every level of hospital infection registration and registration, and it would be ideal to completely eliminate this problem. The service established to supervise the undertaking of activities preventing the spread of infections and infectious diseases is the State Sanitary Inspection.
