Opis:
Research of the biodegradability of degradable/biodegradable plastic material in various types of environments. Research was carried out in order to assess biodegradability of degradable/biodegradable materials made of HDPE and mixed with totally degradable plastic additive (TDPA additive) or made of polyethylene (PE) with the addition of pro-oxidant additive (d2w additive), advertised as 100% degradable or certified as compostable within various types of environments. Research conditions were: (i) controlled composting environment – laboratory-scale, (ii) real composting conditions – domestic compost bin, (iii) real composting conditions – industrial composting plant and (iv) landfill conditions. The results demonstrate that the materials made of HDPE and mixed with totally degradable plastic additive (TDPA additive) or made of polyethylene (PE) with the addition of pro- -oxidant additive (d2w additive) or advertised as 100% degradable did not biodegrade in any of the above-described conditions and remained completely intact at the end of the tests. Biodegradation of the certified compostable plastic bags proceeded very well in laboratory-scale conditions and in real composting conditions – industrial composting plant, however, these materials did not biodegrade in real composting conditions – domestic compost bin and landfill conditions.

Opis:
The Brazil–Malvinas Confluence Zone (BMCZ) is characterized by high environmental variation, which could be reflected in several optical types of water, from one containing only phytoplankton and sea water to other optically more complex. In this paper, we analyze the spatio-temporal variability of the Chlorophyll-a detected by the ocean color sensor (CHLAsat) in BMCZ in order to understand its environmental variability. We use the MODIS-Aqua CHLAsat monthly composites imagery from 2002 to 2015, and applied two statistical methods: the correlogram-based robust periodogram to identify, over a broad spectrum of temporal, the most significant periodicities, and the pixel gradient distribution to study the spatial-temporal gradients within the BMCZ and variations over the continental shelf and coastal waters. Our results point out to the predominance of the annual cycle over most of the investigated area, although an area from latitude 37°S in direction NE, alongshore of Uruguay to Brazil, evidences interannual periodicities, possibly related to variations in the discharge of the Rio de la Plata associated with the El Niño phenomena. The ocean color spectroradiometric signature in terms of pixel gradient presents a relatively high variability (∼0.0 to 0.65 mg m−3); in particular the high values of the pixel gradient correspond to saline front of the estuarine system of Rio de la Plata, and to the strip of the platform that extends along the isobaths of 80 m (coast of Uruguay), especially in the center and south of the study area.

Opis:
Thermal errors are one of the leading causes for positioning inaccuracies in modern machine tools. These errors are caused by various internal and external heat sources and sinks, which shape the machine tool’s temperature field and thus its deformation. Model based thermal error prediction and compensation is one way to reduce these inaccuracies. A new composite correlative model for the compensation of both internal and external thermal effects is presented. The composite model comprises a submodel for slow long- and medium-term ambient changes, one for short-term ambient changes and one for all internal thermal influences. A number of model assumptions are made to allow for this separation of thermal effects. The model was trained using a large number of FE simulations and validated online in a five-axis machine tool with measurements in a climate chamber. Despite the limitations, the compensation model achieved good predictions of the thermal error for both normal ambient conditions (21°C) and extreme ambient conditions (35°C).

Opis:
Four populations of J. communis L. subsp. communis of natural localities in forested regions of the Bory Tucholskie (Poland) were analysed in respect of phenolic compounds concentration and –glucosidase activity. The variability noted in needles was confirmed by adaptation changes; water-logged and poor insolated localities (deciduous mixed fresh forest, dmff – no 3 and coniferous mixed bog forest, cmbf – no 4) stimulated the phenolics accumulation and enzyme activity. On the contrary, the level of phenolics in unripe berry-like cones was almost two fold lower under disadvantageous juniper growth and fructification conditions, whereas the mature berries from poor vigour plants were characterized by higher concentrations of these metabolites. Obtained results show that morphological variation of juniper population was accompanied by variability in phenolic metabolism.

Opis:
We investigated the flowering probability and flower production in relation to plant size in a terrestrial orchid, Dactylorhiza majalis at 10 meadow sites in central and southwestern Poland. These sites differed in altitude (low, high) and management (presence or absence of mowing). At all sites, concentrations of nutrients in the soil were also measured. The probability of flowering increased significantly with the size of the plant in all populations, indicating that individuals do not flower until they reach a threshold size. Populations at high altitudes and the unmown sites had significantly lower threshold sizes for reproduction and showed sharp increase in flowering probability with plant size, compared to other populations. The threshold sizes for reproduction tended to decrease at sites rich in N and Mg and poor in P and S. Flower production was also size-dependent in all populations. Considerable between-site differences were found in the slope and the intercept of the regression between plant size and flower production. Flower production at some sites, at high altitudes, increased more steeply with plant size than at other sites. However, no pattern in size-dependent flower production was found relative to the measured environmental variables. Most of the size-dependent components of flowering probability were related to each other but not with the size-dependent flower production.
