Opis:
Aim/purpose – Saudi Arabia is rapidly urbanizing, where the number of urban residents, currently exceeds 80% of the population. Many cities in the country face challenges of sustainability, livability, resilience, and thus global reputation. Therefore, measuring city performance is crucial in assessing urban complexity in order to improve development potential. As stated in Vision 2030 of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, attempts at improving the global competitiveness and reputation of cities are of prime importance. This attempt aims at developing a culturally sensitive city ranking methodology, testing the method with relevant statistics, and presenting the preliminary results for further discussions, deliberations, and extensions. Design/methodology/approach – In this context, an index named Saudi Arabia’s City-Ranking Index (SACRI) was developed, which proposes a three-dimensional assessment, incorporating livability, competitiveness, and environmental sustainability with 58 indicators (widely used or culturally specific). This exercise is carried out in 17 future cities, considering the feasibility criterion. Findings – Riyadh emerged as the most preferred city with the first rank, followed by Jeddah, Dammam, Madina, and Al Baha in order. Najran ranks 17, the last, preceded by Jazan, Al Qatif, Arar, and Al Taif. Research implications/limitations – This ranking of Saudi Arabia’s cities seeks importance in planning, improving, and promoting livability, competitiveness, and environmental sustainability to grab prominent places on a global scale. Originality/value/contribution – This exercise is unique for Saudi Arabia, with specific cultural dimensions that could be replicated in the neighboring Arab countries.

Opis:
Purpose – The article explores the linkages between the type of environmental strategy (ES), the use of internal communication (IC), and the greening of organizational culture (OC). Moreover, the article empirically examines whether company size matters in the use of environmental IC practices in the green context. Additionally, the article considers differences between people employed at different organizational hierarchy levels. The basis for such a comparison is their opinions about the effectiveness of communication practices. Design/methodology/approach – Empirical research employed a survey method done on 199 organizations in 2020. Statistical analyses used the chi-squared test, Kendall’s Tau-b correlation coefficient, and the Mann–Whitney U test. Findings – The research showed that companies with a proactive green strategy more often use different communication practices related to ES and have a greener culture. The study proved that larger companies more often use the analyzed communication practices. However, we found no significant difference in opinion between middle managers and line employees about the effectiveness of these practices. Practical implications – The main contribution to business practice is the exploratory model based on the empirical study, which allows organizations to successfully implement the ES. Originality/value – Studies rarely combine the three organizational elements: IC, OC, and ES. This article provides new empirical evidence on relationships between features of OC, green strategy types, and communication practices.

Electric vehicles (EVs) play a significant role in a gradual shift towards low-carbon society. However, the impact of electromobility on a power system includes different power quality problems that need to be mitigated. Power Quality Analyzer SONEL PQM-700 was used for the measurement and analysis of the power quality parameters during slow charging (at ̴11A, ̴8,3 A and ̴5,5 A) of a BMW i3 electric vehicle. The read-out mode of the device was considered. The state of EV charge was 30%. The measurements focused on the values of supply voltage, drawn current, harmonics, values of active, reactive and apparent power. In this study, type 2 connector was used to charge the EV. The power quality parameters during the BMW i3 charging were within limits, not a single parameter was exceeded. Additionally, the current state of electric vehicle charging methods and EV charging infrastructure was described and power conditioning solutions were presented.

Opis:
Research background: Health and environmental concerns linked to food production and consumption have become crucial both for policy makers and for consumers for modern society. Some consumers are becoming increasingly careful about what they eat, giving value to the impacts of everyday food choices on their health and on the environment. There have been few studies that have jointly analyzed these consumption patterns and that have looked for their association. Purpose of the article: The objective of the study is to develop a Polish (PL) and Czech (Cz) young-adult consumers' segmentation based on health and environ-mental attitudes and values in food choices. The research is needed to diagnose consumption trends in this segment of the market to enable creating a market offer tailored to this group of consumers. Methods: A total of 631 students from two Universities - one in Poland (University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (323)) and on in the Czech Republic (University of South Bohemia (308)) were selected to participate in the research. The sample of students was chosen because of the importance of young-adult consumers as the participants of the market with a specified purchasing potential. The data were collected through a survey questionnaire, in which a Likert type scale was used to determine the health and environmental attitudes and values in food choices. The results obtained were analyzed statistically using Statistica 13.1 using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation, cluster analysis using the k-means method and ANOVA. Findings & Value added: The survey demonstrated that the students presented both health and environmental attitudes, and that their food choices were driven to a lesser extent by the environmental than by the health-related values. Results demonstrated that the two distinguished factors significantly differentiated both the Polish and the Czech students into two clusters, with the first cluster being represented by consumers presenting stronger health and environmental attitudes (PL N=58%, Cz N=48%) compared to the students from the second cluster. It adds value to recent young consumers' behavior knowledge by jointly analyzing their attitudes toward health and environmental values in food choices. These findings may be useful in developing effective educational and marketing campaigns and understanding the demand for certain products.

Nowadays it is possible to identify a series of parameters that contribute to defining the liveability characteristics of a public space. It is important that all the parameters are satisfied because they are elements that interfere with each other. Morphological characteristics, which partly contribute to defining the environmental performance of the space, together with the functional characteristics of the area, determined by the presence of activities, must be assessed together; however, evaluating them not only in qualitative but also in quantitative terms is not always easy to do. The paper presents a way to evaluate this characteristic of urban space through examples.

Opis:
Geothermal energy is abundant everywhere in the world. It certainly would be a great benefit for human being once it is produced by a sophisticated technology. Consequently, it would be the biggest console for earth considering environmental sustainability. Unfortunately, the current status of commercial production of geothermal energy primarily from hydrothermal, geopressured, hot dry rock, and magma are limited to a few countries due to technological difficulties and production cost. This paper describes a simple technology where an in situ geothermal plant assisted by a heat pump would act as a high-temperature production (>150°C) to provide excellent capacity of energy generation. The issue related to costs is interestingly cheaper on production, comparing to other technologies, such as solar, hydro, wind, and traditional geothermal technology as described in this article. Therefore, it is suggested that heat pump assisted in situ geothermal energy sources has a great potentiality to be a prime energy source in near future. Since the technology has a number of positive characteristics (simple, safe, and provides continuous baseload, load following, or peaking capacity) and benign environmental attributes (zero emissions of CO2, SOx, and NOx), it certainly would be an interesting technology in both developed, and developing countries as an attractive option to produce clean energy to confirm a better environment.

Research background: This study identifies the key factors influencing environmental health across a global panel of countries, focusing on protection from environmental hazards, as informed by the existing literature, while also shedding light on novel aspects of these causal relationships. Purpose of the article: This study aims to reveal, through a comprehensive review of the relevant literature, the underexplored phenomena of spatial diffusion and contagion of national environmental behaviors and the nonlinear dynamics between environmental performance and its determinants, acknowledging the significant diversity in the characteristics and behaviors of the countries studied. Methods: Spatial analysis and econometric methods, including spatial panel regression alongside dynamic panel models using threshold techniques, were employed to meet the study’s objectives. Findings & value added: This study’s major finding is that environmental performance across nations shows significant clustering influenced by economic and institutional factors. This clustering effect arises from spatial contagion and diffusion processes, as evidenced by spatial panel regression analysis. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that variations in environmental behavior can be attributed to differing levels of development and specific internal conditions within countries. Notably, a country’s gross domestic product and the proportion of industries in its economy have a substantial effect on its environmental health practices, establishing distinct impact thresholds. This research enriches academic dialogue by illustrating, through these thresholds, that in less developed countries, an increased industrial share leads to environmental degradation. Moreover, the influence of the other examined factors varied depending on the category of the country under review, highlighting the nuanced effects of economic and institutional variables on environmental outcomes.

Opis:
Considering climate change problems that European countries are currently struggling with, the aim of this paper is to examine the behavioural factors that affect corporate environmental sustainability (CES). Based on the relevant academic literature and reports behavioural barriers and enablers for corporate environmental sustainability are identified using the ABCD (attention-belief formation-choice-determination) framework. Selected issues are further investigated in a survey among a representative sample of 350 small and medium-sized Polish enterprises and discussed in a broader European context. Our research reveals what goals and motivations Polish SMEs employ to make green investments, how they asses their environmental efforts compared with peer companies, what sources of environmental information they consider as trustworthy, as well as what factors they believe most strengthen the firm’s determination for sustainable development. The contribution of this paper lies in shedding light on the starting dispositions of entrepreneurs as targets of public policies promoting environmental goals in the EU. Such insights are instrumental in designing and implementing effective policy interventions.
