Opis:
Tourism constitutes a voluntary change of place of stay, surrounding environment and rhythm of life, which a tourist expects will contribute to his or her development on various levels. Mass tourism is a similar phenomenon. However,  its larger scale may pose a threat to the natural environment comparable to the  impact of numerous industries or that of intensive agriculture.  Sustainable (green tourism) is a response to such threats. This type of tourism  is environmentally friendly in contrast to traditional (mass) tourism, which often  adversely affects the natural balance and disregards the needs of the natural  environment.  In turn, urbanization is a process entailing economic, spatial, social and cultural  changes contributing to the expansion of urban areas. This process is connected with industrialisation and causes migration of people from rural areas to cities in  search for employment in the service sector or industry.  Sustainable urbanisation is quite a new trend in urban development. This type  of urbanisation offers a number of economic benefits, such as reduction in energy  and water consumption, transport costs or costs of numerous services, including  medical, cultural, educational or those linked to lifestyle.  Th is paper describes tourism and urbanisation as mass processes which may have a negative impact on the natural environment. Additionally, the notions of sustainable urbanisation and sustainable tourism are presented as an alternative  to the chaotic urban development and undesirable ways in which tourism may  develop.

Opis:
Cataract is one of the main causes of vision loss. So far, it has been found that one of the causes of cataract formation is the accumulation of heavy metals in ocular tissues and environmental pollution. Research material consisted of blood from healthy volunteers (n = 81; Mogilno Lakeland) and those suffering from cataract (n = 90) from Ophthalmology Clinic, Bydgoszcz (2013, 2016). Samples were prepared in order to obtain plasma, which was used to analyze Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, and Hg concentration (ICP-MS). The purpose of this study is to show the interaction of cataract with cadmium and lead during initial pro-antioxidative reactions and to study element-element interactions. To this end, we analyzed physiological mechanisms that aim to stop the destructive effects of toxic metals. We have shown that the action of zinc, copper and manganese is antioxidant. Concentration of these elements is higher (α = 0. 05, p < 0.05) in the cataract group than in the control. We found interactions Fe-Cu-Zn-Mn-Pb-Cd-Hg. Cd and Pb show a negative effect on the eye tissue and generate pathophysiological changes leading to lens opacity and influence the destabilization of pro-antioxidant reactions. Correlations of elements in the control (Cd-Zn: R = 0.240; Cd-Cu: R = 0.316) and in the sick group (Cd-Cu; R = 0.329) were significant. On the basis of our research we found that there are numerous relationships between the concentrations of chemical elements in the patients with cataracts and the controls. Significant role of antagonisms with cadmium and lead has been demonstrated; these elements contribute to the gradual development of cataract. A correlation between elements exhibiting pro-antioxidant activity in the interactions with cadmium and lead (p=0.000) can be a source of cataract changes. The differences in Cd and Pb concentration and their interactions with elements between the control and sick groups can be considered as a factor for the development of cataract.

In the face of intense development of our civilization, municipal waste contributes greatly to environmental pollution. In Poland, especially in large conurbations, municipal waste is a major category of waste. This paper discusses trends in municipal waste management, resulting from applicable standards in the European Union which are intended, fi rst of all, to minimize landfi lling. Problems relating to the handling of thermal processing and mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) of waste are described. Waste processing, intended to generate energy by co-combustion, is also presented. Moreover, this paper refers to the legal regulations that waste processing plants are expected to comply with.

This study aimed to determine the ability to modify slow sand filter (SSF) media with silica sand or Anadara granosa shells on the efficiency of removal of turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and iron in the water of Kali Jagir Surabaya as an effort to achieve clean water in disaster areas, to obtain the influence of variables, and to optimize the obtained results. The research data was processed using Design Expert 11 Software which factors consisted of media type, filtering speed, and running time, for the responses of removal efficiencies for each parameter. The reactor was operated continuously for 6 days, and samples were analyzed for turbidity parameters based on Indonesian standard (SNI 06-6989.25-2005); TSS and Iron Standard Method 23rd 3500A. In addition, the results of the parameters were processed using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to show the significant effect of the variables on the efficiency of the elimination of all parameters. Optimal research was achieved in the SSF reactor unit with silica sand media type and filtering speed of 0.1 m/hour turbidity removal efficiency of 82.07%; TSS 89.5%; and 50.14% iron. However, the reactor that was chosen was the filtering speed of 0.1 m/hour with a flow rate of 22.8 L/day, while the SSF was suitable to be applied in disaster areas, which had a large discharge. Hence, the reactor is suitable for use in water sanitation in disaster areas, namely with a filtering speed of 0.3 m/hour which produces a discharge of 68.4 L/day with variations of sand, geotextile, and silica sand media.

Opis:
Though Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a worldwide problem, the collected wastes are dumped in open dumping at landfilling sites while the uncollected wastes remain strewn on the roadside, many-a-time clogging drainage. Such unsafe and inadequate management of MSW causes spread of bacteria, viruses, particulate matter, dioxins and other harmful pollutants in the surroundings and atmosphere. Hence, due to the repeated exposure of population to these pollutants can lead to serious health problems such as Diarrhea/Dysentery, Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI), and Asthma/Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRD). Therefore, two-phase study included secondary data on diseases caused due to environmental pollution and primary data on MSW and lack of MSW management from 127 households in urban Patna, India. The random sampling method was used for collection of primary survey data, conducted during 2015–16 in selected areas of Patna. Logistic regression model odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were used to show the strength of the associations among segregation of wastes at source, segregation behavior, collection bins in the area, distance of collection bins from a residential area, and transportation of MSW. The ROC is a statistical technique to validate the logistic regression method that predicts the occurrence of an event through the comparison of probability picture of an event occurrence observed by probability and the predicted probability of the same event. The area under the ROC curve is up to 0.889 extent, which reveals that the ‘segregation of waste at source’ has a very strong scope to accomplish sustainable recycling at urban Patna in order to manage waste with the overall accuracy of 92.126%, which proves a better fi t logistic regression model. Hence, this paper concludes that ‘segregation of waste at source’ helps to attain sustainable recycling which would be the most viable approach to manage MSW in Patna and would eventually reduce environmental pollutants for the public health safety.

Opis:
The global supply chain has been growing strongly in recent years. This development brings many benefits to the economy, society, and human resources in each country but also causes a large number of concerns related to the environment since traditional logistics activities in the supply chain have been releasing a significant amount of emissions. For that reason, many solutions have been proposed to deal with these environmental pollution problems. Among these, three promising solutions are expected to completely solve environmental problems in every supply chain: (I) Application of blockchain in the supply chain, (II) Use of renewable energy and alternative fuels, and (III) Design of a closed supply chain. However, it seems to lack a comprehensive study of these solutions aiming to overcome the drawbacks of traditional logistics. Indeed, this work focuses on analyzing and evaluating the three above-mentioned solutions and the impacts of each solution on solving problems related to traditional logistics. More importantly, this work also identifies critical factors and challenges such as policies, laws, awareness, and risks that are found to be remarkable difficulties in the shifting progress of traditional logistics to green logistics. Finally, directions for developing and deploying green solutions to the logistics, supply chain, and shipping sectors toward decarbonization strategies and net-zero goals are discussed in detail.

Opis:
Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) is a rational number to characterize the quality of the environment at a given location following the algorithm of source, pathway, and receptor. As CEPI increases, there will be adverse effects on the receiving environment. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has brought out revised criteria for evaluation of CEPI by replacing the criteria issued in 2010. The revised criteria are issued to overcome the subjectivity factors of health impact studies on humans, flora and fauna. Kurichi Industrial Cluster in Coimbatore District is an engineering industrial estate housing foundries, forging units, metal finishing and fabrication units. In January 2010, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India declared Kurichi as critically polluted area and imposed moratorium on new projects and for expansion of the existing units. This declaration was made based on the CEPI score which was calculated as more than 70. Thereafter, the industries and the local stake holders have implemented various pollution control measures and hence the CEPI score has come down less than 70 and so the moratorium was lifted in October 2010. In this paper, the CEPI score is calculated based on the revised criteria and using the environmental quality monitoring data collected in April 2017. It is found that the CEPI score is below 70 which imply that the industrial units are operating and maintaining the pollution control measures consistently. However, taking a policy decision based on the CEPI score, one should be cautious on the adequacy of data and the parameters selected.

Characteristic of “sustainable development” is in the “recognition” of the environment as an element, outside of which cannot be thought of overall development of a society. In this article will be treated the rehabilitation project of salt production in Vlore which is the only activity of this type in Albania and the largest in the Balkans. The industry of salt Production in Vlore is part of one of the branches of industry that can contribute in an important way in the national production and in the improvement of the balance of imports-exports. This project is done for two reasons: 1. Technologies used in Albania are of a very old level 2. The current productivity is very low compared with the industrialized countries. This investment project apart from the impact to a sustainable development for the area it also presents a series of other values such as: - Saline can provide water surface which are important for the moderation of climate and air quality. - In the period of their return to their previous conditions they can turn into Lagoons of great value; - Saline serve as a tool for the regulation of flooding in the area in which they are located;

Opis:
The increasing demand for noble metals boosts their price. In order to meet the increasing demand for elements, a number of technologies are being developed to recover elements already present in the environment. Traffic-related metal pollution is a serious worldwide concern. Roadside soils are constantly subjected to the deposition of metals released by tailpipe gases, vehicle parts, and road infrastructure components. These metals, especially platinum group elements from catalytic converters, accumulating in the soil pose a risk both for agricultural and residential areas. Phytomining is suggested as a novel technology to obtain platinum group metals from plants grown on the contaminated soil, rock, or on mine wastes. Interest in this method is growing as interest in the recovery of rare metals is also increasing. Based on the research of many authors, the sources and amounts of noble metals that accumulate in soil along communication routes have been presented. The paper presents also plants that can be used for phytomining.
