Opis:
In his meta-literary and para-textual statements, Milan Kundera has been frequently turning to the issue of the enlightenment narrative experiments considered as the initial ones for the twentieth-century (post)modern creative strategies. Those experiments resulted from the striving for suppression of the over-prescription characterized the classicist rules, and they managed to direct attention to the literary genres which were undermined by the Enlightenment era that is in other words and above all, novel. In order to reveal this “modernity” of the eighteenth-century prose, the Czech writer in the work entitled Jacques and his master (1971) performed a “cultural translation” (variation) of the famous text by Diderot into the form of drama. Kundera was focused on the devices used by the French encyclopaedist which enabled him to expose the “evidence of trick” regarding the anti-illusion and fictitious character of literary representation of the world. He was, therefore, interested not so much in the philosophical and ideological background of Diderot’s tale dedicated to the romances of Jacques the Fatalist, but in the author’s freedom in his “play with the romance’s conventions” which even then was undergoing the process of fast schematisation.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to examine the influence of Scottish Enlightenment philosophy on Alasdair Gray’s novel Poor Things (1992) with a particular focus on its references to the natural and life sciences. The essay argues that the novel allegorizes two central themes of the eighteenth-century Science of Man: it stresses the social nature of human beings, and it aims for a comprehensive portrayal of human nature whose different aspects are depicted in explicit connection with one another. The article shows that Gray employs the emancipatory framework of Scottish Enlightenment philosophy in order to communicate an idealistic belief in the possibility of gradual improvement of society.

Opis:
Some Belarusian philosophical-allegoric novel renewal periods have been studied closely with the emphases on the historic, social and cultural heritage of different epochs. In the article, the decisive role of the Enlightenment French philosophical prose is noted in the development of the modern Belarusian philosophical-allegoric novel. The Enlightenment French philosophical-allegoric text is a model of reality, simple for understanding, with a fascinating adventure story, but with an obscure moral and philosophical attitude and didacticism. The 18th century philosophical-allegoric prose is distinguished by the parable form of narrative, which is characterized by moral and philosophical problems, global questions about the life and destiny of people, marked by didacticism, by a high degree of generalization, and the obligatory projection of the idea on the reader views. The article proves the influence of Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot’ philosophical works on the development of the modern philosophical-allegoric novel in Belarusian literature. The article analyzes the poetics of Belarusian contemporary works of this genre taking into account the French traditions of the Enlightenment.

Opis:
Mostowska`s novel had no editon since it`s first publication in the first decade of XIX century. For years her literary output was ignored and depreciated. Undoubtely in spite of some flaws, Mostowska` s literary output includes didactic value, innovatory current and tendency. Mostowska was one from the first woman writers. She engaged herself in cultural and literary life, watched over publication of her works. The premise of modern editing Mostowska`s novel is not only to allow reading after two hundred years of break, in the optimum editorial form, but also to show Mostowska`s achievements in a new light. Contemporary edition is an attempt to re‑read and objectify the clerical image of this author. At the beginning of the edition appeared belief or argument that language fault of author should not prevent the critical edition, especially when we are dealing in the artistic achievements, which was not published outside the first edition ever.

Opis:
The Enlightenment inspired the Polish post-war authors to create thriller fables in different ways: first of all, there were attempts to literary work out authentic histories, then some authors “revealed” alleged inside stories of real events, finally some stories presented completely fictional episodes set in the realities of Polish, sometimes also European, Age of Enlightenment. The vision of the epoque, based on historical sources and studies, is most often rather stereotypical and illustrative in character, but nothing else should be expected in the popular literature. If there are any attempts to revise the view of that times, they refer only to the traditions of popular literature as well (like in the novel “Choć nas potępiają umysły zacięte...” written by Jerzy Siewierski, which clearly refers polemically to Aleksander Dumas’s “Diaries of a Doctor”). Except historical studies, diaries and other sources, also the literature of the Enlightenment is used in different ways. There are quotes or crypto-quotes in the plot, characters often read books that were popular in that times, we can also recognize features of some characters as typical for satire, comedy or novel of the Enlightenment Ages. Sometimes the narrative-fictional patterns of the eighteenthcentury novel are used as literary allusion. However, the most interesting works are the ones in which authors managed not only to compare a sensational, spy or criminal episode to the realities of the epoque, but also make elements of “the Spirit of the Enlightenment” an integral part of that plot. It is especially visible in the novels of Siewierski’s or Jerzy Piechowski’s.
