    Integrity is a common and well established concept in the ethical vocabulary. It is also being used in various codes of ethics, and investigated by means of various methods. However a review of the contemporary reference literature reveals various meanings associated with this term, which is followed by its variable applicability. It is mentioned among the desirable virtues possessed by the professionals. In various Polish codes of engineering ethics there is an absence of the integrity concept, at least comprehended as fully as it is in the ethics literature. The paper contains an analysis of the meaning of integrity in English and its translations into Polish in selected codes of engineering ethics. The scopes of the used terms are compared and in result it is postulated that some initiatives be undertaken in order to clarify the discrepancies existing in various engineering codes of ethics around the professional integrity concept.

    The article refers to the meta-theoretical aspects of contemporary reflec-tion about so-called ethics engineering in the context of ethics division be-tween: meta-ethics, normative ethics and sociology of morality. Analyses are based on the context of meta-ethical general principles attributable to the con-temporary discourse of engineering ethics, such as: cognitivism in naturalistic and anti-naturalistic version. Ethics engineering in its present form does not constitute a single conceptually self-mainstream ethical or philosophical disci-pline, but its nature of the idea reflects in “applied ethics”.

    The paper attempts to analyse the ethical duties of engineers contained in selected engineering codes of ethics and indicates a few problems arising in teaching professional engineering ethics in technical studies. The codes of ethics under analysis, both Polish and foreign (American), show similarities and differences. The author indicates the likely causes of these similarities and differences and suggests the need for further research on the development of ethical standards as well as their implementation, application and enforcement. The author discusses teaching ethics based on his own experience and compares a few American textbooks used for engineering ethics teaching. The author indicates a lack of necessary teaching materials in Polish and the existence of no Polish forum for discussing ethical problems of engineering in Poland both in the areas of teaching and research.

    The issue of innovation has also been pursued in social sciences and subsequently specifically in the field of application of socio-scientific knowledge. It is not just about professional engineering ethics but we perceive it in a complex and wider social context. Doing good as well as good practice are more than the professional code of ethics or an effort for technical or managerial excellence. Innovative changes should not be parameterized solely by economic efficiency or performance. With regard to new knowledge and technology development, their ethical aspects become more important and focus more on good life. In the context of social sciences with interdisciplinary trends, applied ethics and its subdisciplines (professional ethics, business ethics, ethics of science and research) can take over and play an important practical role. Innovative processes are increasingly becoming the focus of applied ethics, especially in terms of ethical risks. Our mission is to offer an interdisciplinary view of innovation as discussed in the ethics aspect. Based on these considerations, we conclude that ethics need to be integrated into individual innovation processes and adopted as an important condition for eliminating (mitigating) social risks. In our theoretical considerations we offer a view of the scientific risks and forms of prevention related to innovative change in important areas including engineering practice or health protection.

    Opis:
    The article discusses problems of image development in selected professional engineering communities, as expressed in their ethical codes. Specific codified norms are presented and their likely effects discussed on two levels: personal and social. The findings show, that not all of the codes of ethics solve the development problem identically, with the differences likely to cause some variability in be-havioural patterns among members of the professional societies. The analysis suggests the need for further research and analyses as well as the standardization of codified solutions to this problem among professional engineering societies.

    There is an ongoing investigation by scholars of ethics and economics into whether human decision making and the resultant acts should be guided by rules and procedures or by judgment and discretion. Although each of these modes offers advantages and disadvantages to decision makers, they are by no means neutral in their effect on professional development. The paper presents an in-depth view of discretionary decisions using an Aristotelian-Thomistic framework. This is the first of the series of papers which focus on the application of realistic philosophical principles to ethical professional behaviour and decision making in daily practice. Results indicate that classical philosophical theories which use virtues and truth as indispensable components still may give rise to desirable and moral conduct among individuals who apply them.

    Various scholars of ethics and economics conduct research on the best modes of decision making which guarantee good outcome and moral behaviour of the individuals involved. Either of the modes considered, rules with regulations or discretion and judgment, find applicability in diversified professional circumstances. The paper investigates how discretion can be used in professional activity by using the Aristotelic-Thomistic framework. Results indicate that such a framework can be used by engineers in their working environments and by other working professionals with the main proposition that only in discretionary decision making is the person able to take full responsibility for the outcomes and to premeditate their moral worth in conscience before resolving to commit the act itself.

    Wspólnoty praktyki (communities of practice) są szczególnym przypadkiem społeczności, których jednostki łączy wspólna praca zawodowa, wspólne cele i misja. Literatura zna przypadki wspólnot praktyki informatyków uczestniczących w e-biznesie, lekarzy udzielających usługi pacjentom na odległość, samoistnie tworzących się wspólnot użytkowników jakiejś technologii, marki sprzętu lub oprogramowania. Brakuje badań dotyczących zachowań wspólnot zawodowych dyscyplin technicznych, szczególnie tych angażujących się w handel i użytkujących usługi udostępniane w sieci internet. Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą określenia form uczestnictwa przedstawicieli dyscyplin technicznych w e-biznesie zarówno w zamkniętych i zintegrowanych sieciach korporacyjnych, jak i otwartych i rozległych połączonych z siecią Internet. Na tym tle pojawiają się pytania o etyczne uczestnictwo przedstawicieli tych wspólnot w specyficznych zadaniach wymagających korzystania z handlu elektronicznego i komunikacji elektronicznej.
    Communities of practice are a particular form of communities which are bound by common work, ends and mission. There are communities of practice of computer scientists who participate in e-business, of doctors who render e-services to their patients, of self-organizing communities of particular technology practitioners, brands or software. There is no descriptive research concerning the behaviours of members of communities of practice, particularly those of technical disciplines who are engaged in trade and use Internet services. Th is article attempts to delineate forms of participation of members of technical communities in e-business including closed integrated corporate networks and open wide area networks integrated with the Internet. This poses questions of their ethical participation in specifi c tasks which require use of electronic communication and e-commerce.

W Polsce coraz częściej dyskutowane są kwestie potrzeby tworzenia etyki dla poszczególnych grup zawodowych. Wynika to z faktu, że etyka zawodowa ułatwia wykonywanie określonego zawodu, wpływa na jego prestiż, pomaga w rozwiązywaniu konfliktów, przyśpiesza podejmowanie decyzji, daje wskazówki obyczajowe i dotyczące perfekcjonizmu zawodowego, zakreśla i uzasadnia granice odstępstwa od norm powszechnych oraz nakazuje w pewnych wypadkach traktować obowiązki ogólnie uznane za nadzwyczajne jako podstawowe.
    Ethos is a set of norms, values and criteria that characterize a specific environment. The article deals with the issues of professional ethics in the field of civil engineering. In Poland, the issues of the need to create ethics for individual professional groups are being discussed more and more often. This is due to the fact that professional ethics facilitates the performance of a specific profession, influences its prestige, helps in resolving conflicts, accelerates decision-making, gives moral and professional guidelines for professional perfectionism, outlines and justifies the limits of deviation from common norms, and in some cases requires the treatment of obligations generally recognized as extraordinary as basic.

    W pracy omówiono problem zakresu kształcenia inżyniera budownictwa w okresie intensywnego rozwoju technologii, wzrostu wymagań w odniesieniu do obiektów budowlanych oraz wzrostu oczekiwań społecznych w odniesieniu do osób pełniących samodzielne funkcje techniczne. W artykule omówiono przykładowe rozwiązania zmniejszające energochłonność budynków, tematykę projektowania i wznoszenia budynków wysokich z uwzględnieniem aspektów zrównoważonego rozwoju, technologie rewitalizacji obiektów zabytkowych, które straciły swoje funkcje w związku z przemianami społecznymi, zasady współpracy pomiędzy branżami oraz problem odpowiedzialności inżyniera budownictwa za zespoły, którymi kieruje. Wykazano, że studia powinny przekazywać taki zasób wiedzy, aby z jednej strony uświadomić inżynierowi, jak ważny jest jego zawód dla społeczeństwa a z drugiej strony mogły być podstawą do dalszego samodzielnego poszerzenia wiedzy.
    This paper discusses problem of the scope of education of civil engineer during intensive development of technology, increased requirements for buildings and the growth of social expectations with regard to people performing independent technical functions. This paper discusses exemplary solutions which decrease energy consumption of buildings, designing and erecting of high buildings taking into account aspect of sustainable development, revitalization technology of monuments, which lost their function due to social transformations, principles of cooperation between the industries and problems of responsibility of civil engineer for teams they are working with.
