Opis:
The study presents a durability analysis of dies used in the first operation of producing a valve-type forging from high nickel steel assigned to be applied in motor truck engines. The analyzed process of producing exhaust valves is realized in the forward extrusion technology and next through forging in closed dies. It is difficult to master, mainly due to the increased adhesion of the charge material (high nickel steel) to the tool’s substrate. The mean durability of tools made of tool steel W360, subjected to thermal treatment and nitriding, equals about 1000 forgings. In order to perform a thorough analysis, complex investigations were carried out, which included: a macroscopic analysis combined with laser scanning, numerical modelling by FEM, microstructural tests on a scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy (metallographic), as well as hardness tests. The preliminary results showed the presence of traces of abrasive wear, fatigue cracks as well as traces of adhesive wear and plastic deformation on the surface of the dies. Also, the effect of the forging material being stuck to the tool surface was observed, caused by the excessive friction in the forging’s contact with the tool and the presence of intermetallic phases in the nickel-chromium steel. The obtained results demonstrated numerous tool cracks, excessive friction, especially in the area of sectional reduction, as well as sticking of the forging material, which, with insufficient control of the tribological conditions, may be the cause of premature wear of the dies.

Opis:
The present paper presents the results of studies conducted on valve disks before and after deposition of a chromium coat onto the stem of an ICE poppet valve. Studied poppet valves were made entirely of X45CrSi9-3 valve steel (1.4718) in the process of electro-upsetting and in the process of hot forging. A chamfered rod is heated by induction and upset forged, and after this process, it is placed in a die and forged. A valve prepared in this way is placed in a furnace, where it is held at a temperature of 800oC in order to remove stresses created during the forging process. The final operation is the process of quenching the seat face of the disk by induction, which has the purpose of increasing the hardness of this component [1–3]. Despite the fact that valve shaping using the electro-upsetting and hot forging process has been universally applied for a long time, it often poses many technological difficulties for engine manufacturers. Measurements of internal stresses were conducted using the X-ray method, microstructure investigations were carried out using a scanning electron microscope, and hardness measurements were conducted. Information was obtained on whether the technological process has an impact on the creation of large positive internal stresses; hot deformation and strain rate cause heterogeneity of the microstructure and are the source of internal stresses in the valve disk’s cross-section. It was stated that there are not significant differences in the state of internal stresses created as a result of structural changes in the valve disk, in a state before and after deposition of a chromium coat onto the valve stem.

Opis:
Indication process of big marine and industrial diesel engines are taken through indicating canals with indicating valves. Influence of these channels on parameters values obtained from engines indication is significant. Depending on chosen method of TDC determination the obtained image course error could achieved even 80% of measured value. It is assumed that this error is systematic and identical for whole engine cylinders or even for whole the same engines type. From these reasons such measurement are commonly used only for comparative tests. Engines exploitation caused technical degradation of indicators canals and valves. Unburnt fuels and oil particles deposits in channel changing its patency and also untightens in connections occurs. These are the reasons of changing in indication pressure diagram image. Process of degradation could be treated as random and measured parameters could be also burden by random error. During tests which were carried out on Sulzer type 6AL20/24 engine simulations of indicator canal malfunctions were made and their influence on obtained indication parameters were checked. Obtained parameters devalue sense of engine tuning in exploitation which based only on comparative tests of indicating pressure curves.

Opis:
A vibroacoustic signal of an internal combustion engine contains several diagnostic information, which are -for the most part - not utilised since they require complex processing methods in order to separate useful data and to eliminate disturbances. The way of analysis ofsuch complex signal depends on the diagnostic aim. It is a rich source of information not only concerning the combustion process, but also various mechanical defects occurring in the driving system (valves, clutch, gearbox). Wear of elements as well as small mechanical defects cause the adaptation of the control system to new parameters. Thus, in many cases these adaptive systems can be masking mechanical defects. Burning out of exhaust valves or an improper valve clearance are examples of such defects. The method of diagnostics of leakages in a system: exhaust valve - cylinder, on the basis of measuring the vibration signal of the engine head is proposed in the paper. The results of the analysis of the engine vibration signal under conditions of a defected exhaust valve and an increased valve clearance are presented. The active diagnostic experiment was performed on the engine of Fiat Punto 1.2. During road tests the vibrations acceleration signal was recorded as well as certain auxiliary signals used for a synchronisation and identification of engine timing. The natural acceleration of vibrations in the resonance frequency range of the piezoelectric sensor was utilized. The vibration signal was pre-processed i.e. filtered, synchronously averaged and windowed. Satisfying diagnostic results of the valve defect or the improper valve clearance were obtained on the basis of the analysis of the engine vibration acceleration signal envelope. The signal measures explicitly indicating the valve condition were determined. The method, after certain modifications, can be applied for the on-line valve diagnostics.

Opis:
The theoretical analysis of the SI engine load adjustment has been presented. The load especially in SI engine is highly dependent on the process of charge exchange. This process has significant impact on the effectiveness of an engine work because it is connected with the necessity of overcoming the flow resistance, then with the necessity of doing a work, so-called the charge exchange work. The flow resistance caused by throttling valve is especially high during part load operation. The open theoretical cycle has been assumed as a model of processes proceeding in the engine. Using fully variable inlet and exhaust valves timing the cycle can be realized e.g. according to two systems: system with early inlet valve closing (EIVC) and system with early exhaust valve closing (EEVC). Both systems have been analysed individually and comparatively with the open Seiliger-Sabathe cycle, which is theoretical cycle for the classical throttle governing of an engine load. Benefits resulting from application of the systems with independent inlet and exhaust valves control have been assessed on the basis of the selected parameters: a fuel dose, a cycle work, a charge exchange work and a cycle efficiency. The use of the analysed systems to governing of the SI engine load will enable to eliminate a throttling valve from inlet system and reduce the charge exchange work, especially within the range of part load operation. Decrease of the charge exchange work leads to increase of the internal and effective works, which results in increase of the effective efficiency of the spark ignition engine. Additionally, the EEVC enables realization of the internal EGR.

The new control algorithm for the valve timing in camless combustion engine is presented in the article. The magnetoelectric actuators have been used in the valve timing for analyzed popular combustion engine. Each titanium valve has been connected with the coil of actuator. Such coil can move in the magnetic field, generated in magnet circuit containing sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets, the core, pole shoes and air gaps. The movement of coil can occur when current flows in the coil winds and then electrodynamic force is generated. The nonlinear curves of generated electrodynamic force versus displacement of coil - valve assembly and vs. current in the coil have been computed using FEM method and presented in the article. The new mathematical model has been elaborated to calculate valve lift vs. coil lift for different coil currents and dynamic parameters of the coil. The values of current in coil should be controlled by the elaborated algorithm with the feedback. This algorithm has been based on tracing of position points of valve, during valve movement. The modelled course of valve lift vs. time has been first elaborated, for the needed rpm of engine. Next the first approximated current pulse train has been generated, the movement of the coil - valve assembly could be obtained. The calculated position of valve has been compared with the valve position from modelled course of valve lift vs. time. Basing on obtained difference of valve lift, the next current pulse train has been corrected in such a way, to obtain in any moment the closest position of valve to the one from modelled course. The obtained courses of valve lift vs. time for different modelled courses of valve lift vs. time and vs. rpm of engine have been presented in the article.

The greatest values of impact force and acceleration have been for the small, middle and high values of valve lift, either. The ratio of impact force and valve acceleration has changed in thin bands. The friction force has decreased slightly with frequency increase and has decreased with valve lift increase. The sound level has increased with the frequency increase, and has not been dependent upon valve lift.

The present work defines main conception of modern, efficient and ecologic two-stroke engine. It indicates the scope of necessary modifications that have to be made in typical four-stroke engine to prepare it to work in two-stroke mode. Taking into account some limitations (especially in valve train design) authors performed several analyzes in order to check the possibility of proper scavenging process and obtain main engine characteristics. The paper contains description of simulation approach and selected mathematical models that was applied in carried over analyzes. The results of foregoing simulations, which were obtain taking advantage of GT-Power software should be considered as preliminary since several parameters have to be defined during research and 3D simulations. In order to expose advantages of modern two-stroke engine a simple comparison of it and its predecessor was performed taking into consideration BSFC maps. The objects of simulation were fluid flow, scavenging and combustion. This comparison indicates that proposed two-stroke engine achieve significantly less break specific fuel consumption (up to 27 g/kWh drop). Paper presents diagram of new type two-stroke engine with poppet valves, which is probably the most feasible layout of two-stroke engine, and GT-Power model of simulated single-cylinder engine based on four-stroke single cylinder engine.

Opis:
Internal combustion engines, used for driving of different cars, occur not only at the full load, but mostly at the part load. The relative load exchange work at the full (nominal) engine load is significant low. At the part load of the IC engine his energy efficiency r)e is significantly lower than in the optimal (nominal field) range of the performance parameters. One of the numerous reasons of this effect is regular growing of the relative load exchange work of the IC engine. The load exchange work of IC engine essentially determines the effective engine efficiency. It is directly connected with the quantitative regulation method common used in the IC engines. From the thermodynamic point of view - the main reason of this effect is the throttling process (causing exergy losses) occurring in the inlet and outlet channels. The known proposals for solving of this problem are based on applying of the fully electronic control of the motion of inlet, outlet valves and new reference cycles. The independent actuating (steerage) procedures of the ICE inlet valves should assure the adequate mass of the fresh charge, while procedures of the outlet valves are focused on the optimal exhaust gas recirculation rate, according to the engine load. The idea presented in the paper leads to diminishing the charge exchange work of the IC engines. The mentioned above problem can be solved using presented in the paper a new concept of the reference cycle (called as eco-cycle) of IC engine.

Opis:
The main engine of the ship is a complex technical object, which provides propulsion of the screw and ensures the safety of a ship at sea. It consists of a number of control systems such as lube oil temperature control, temperature control of the cooling water, fuel viscosity control or adjustable speed control of the main engine. Each of the main propulsion control system affects the safety of the ship. Continuous automation systems are built with standard transducer of measured quantity, the controller and actuator. The actuator is responsible for the direct setting of the size of the control object. The actuator is connected to the control valve and the actuator position change translates into a change in the flow rate of the working medium. Thus, the operating element is required to operate in the linear characteristics of the standard signal range. From the other hand, the control valve provides flow characteristics linear or of equal percentage. This control principle of medium flow is used in various control systems. The actuator of the control valve is always equipped with a positioner, which corrects errors in the position of the valve relative to the input signal. The presented design of the motorized valve is an analog system. Using the technique of converting multiple digital signal causes the system complexity and predisposition to damage. Eliminating the intermediate elements can improve the quality control and system safety. Then it is beneficial to have a design of the operating element based on the direct digital processing unit. The aim of paper has been to present design of the valve actuator, which completely abandons the digital-to-analogue convertor. The new design should increase the level of security of the system and quality control. The design layout is presented in the article. The new actuator is on-off valves, which control, directly from the digital bits, the form of the output signal. The control signal may use the control algorithms to be used or developed individually to the actuator design.
