Opis:
The introduction of the subsequent European emission standards raises controversy among vehicle manufacturers and researchers. In order to meet the legal requirements, it is necessary to continually improve not only the cars but also the costly measurement facilities. In addition, current methods do not give a clear answer to the harmful effects of exhaust gases on living organisms. By using the appropriate In vitro method to directly assess the toxicity of gaseous mixtures, one can obtain simple, reliable results that can be used to validate the introduction of ever more stringent Euro standards.

Opis:
Changing some parameters of the engine structure alters the emission of harmful components in the exhaust gas. This applies in particular to the damage of charge exchange system as well as fuel system and engine supercharger. These changes are much greater during the dynamic states and their accompanying transitional processes. The different sensitivity of diagnostic parameters to the same force, coming from the engine structure, but realized in other loading conditions can be discussed. Presented in the paper is a model of the engine diagnostic, in which symptoms are indicators of diagnostic and emission characteristics of gaseous exhaust components. Model is complemented with the tests on the single-cylinder research engine ZS. Also proposed is a measure of the sensitivity of the diagnostic parameter during dynamic processes.
Zmiana niektórych parametrów struktury silnika wpływa na zmianę emisji szkodliwych składników w spalinach. Dotyczy to przede wszystkim uszkodzeń występujących w układzie wymiany ładunku a także w układzie paliwowym i układzie doładowania silnika. Zmiany te mają zdecydowanie większe wartości podczas trwania stanów dynamicznych i towarzyszących im procesów przejściowych.

Volatile organic compounds are considered as one of the most harmful pollutants. Among them are hydrocarbons, which belongs to one of the chemicals groups monitored in the process of using vehicles. The article emphasized VOC toxicity in the light of the changes in the legislation on engine exhaust emissions. For the determination of volatile organic compounds, the exhaust gases of selected passenger cars were tested. Gas chromatography was used for the studies. The results have been verified with regard to the introduction of increasingly restrictive Euro standards. Furthermore this article discusses the issue related to the control of VOC emissions from internal combustion engines in cars as well as the attitude of vehicle users towards the adverse environmental conditions associated with the emission of toxins.
Do badań wykorzystano metodę chromatografii gazowej.

Opis:
The paper presents the possibility of using an analytical study of the engine exhaust ignition to evaluate the technical condition of the selected components. Software tools available for the analysis of experimental data commonly use multiple regression model that allows the study of the effects and iterations between model input quantities and one output variable. The use of multi-equation models gives a lot of freedom in the analysis of the measurement results, as it allows the simultaneous analysis of multiple effects and iterations of output variables. It can also be used as a tool for the preparation of experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools, such as models using neural networks, which allow, in contrast to multi-equation models, the recognition of the state with the number of classes of more than two-class, thus enabling diagnostic reasoning. Assuming that there is a strong correlation and unambiguous nature of the changes in the concentrations of toxic compounds analyzed in the course of the experiment can be seen as symptoms of the technical condition of the engine and with the known values of the output signals (including concentrations of toxic compounds) and their estimates, the values of residuals can be determined, which may indicate the type of damage. The authors show the advantages of using these analytical tools on the example of research conducted on the engine test bench.
W artykule przedstawiono możliwość wykorzystania wyników badań składu spalin silnika z zapłonem samoczynnym do oceny stanu technicznego jego wybranych podzespołów. Dostępne programy narzędziowe służące do analizy danych eksperymentalnych powszechnie wykorzystują model regresji wielokrotnej, który umożliwia badanie efektów i interacji pomiędzy wielkościami wejściowymi modelu a jedną zmienną wyjściową. Zastosowanie modeli wielorównaniowych daje wiele możliwości podczas analizy wyników pomiarowych, gdyż umożliwia jednoczesną analizę efektów i interacji wielu zmiennych wyjściowych.

Hydrocarbons, especially aromatic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), emitted by IC engines, indisputably have a negative impact on the environment and public health. Even though current legislation strongly impacts on their low concentration in the exhausts, not quantity but the quality of those substances determines fumes toxicity. The paper presents results of the researches on a photocatalytic device dedicated to BTX (benzene-toluene-xylene) removal from IC engine exhausts, which can be applied in a vehicle cabin ventilation system. According to the results, the system is able to decrease toxic compounds concentration (caused by mobile emission sources) in inlet-air delivered to the vehicle interior. In effect, the system application reduces the users of a vehicle to exposure on contaminants.

The mounting bolt hole of aircraft engine exhaust cone was found cracked in the weld area. Exhaust cone material is alfa/beta titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy. The cracked section will be repaired by welding to restore its function. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on ductility, grain size, and shear strength of Ti-6Al-4V plates (0.063 in. thickness) welded by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) using commercial purity (CP) titanium wire electrode (AMS 4951H). The weld quality was evaluated by non-destructive and destructive tests, using the acceptance criteria of AWS D17.1 and AWS B2.1 as references. The effect of PWHT was examined by preparing two weld specimens: with and without PWHT at 620 centigrade. Non-destructive inspection by dye penetrant and xray radiography tests revealed that the weld in these two specimens is free from surface and internal defects. Weld specimen without PWHT is brittle and failed during fillet break test, whereas PWHT specimen is ductile and pass the same test. Metallography observation was conducted to measured grain size of base metal and heat affected zone (HAZ). The average grain size of PWHT specimen is 18.40 mi m on base metal and 36.80 mi m on HAZ, and for non-PWHT specimen is 26.85 mi m on base metal and 52.10 mi m on HAZ. Using Hall-Petch approach, the yield strength is calculated about 920 MPa on the base metal of PWHT specimen, which result in the shear strength of about 531 MPa. Under static loading, the shear stress on the outer surface of exhaust cone due to exhaust gas is about 38 MPa, which is much lower than material shear strength.

Opis:
Objectives Diesel exhaust fumes emission is a significant source of ultrafine particles, the size of which is expressed in nanometers. People occupationally exposed to diesel exhaust particles include mainly workers servicing vehicles with engines of this type. This article presents the analysis of measurements of ultrafine particle concentrations occurring in the bus depot premises during the work connected with everyday technical servicing of buses. Material and Methods The measurements were carried out in the everyday servicing (ES) room of the bus depot before, during and after the work connected with bus servicing. Determinations included: particle concentrations in terms of particle number and particle surface area, and mass concentrations of aerosol. Results Mean value of number concentration of 10- to 1000-nm particles increased almost 20-fold, from 7600 particles/cm³ before starting bus servicing procedures to 130 000 particles/cm³ during the bus servicing procedures in the room. During the procedures, the mean surface area concentration of particles potentially deposited in the alveolar (A) region was almost 3 times higher than that of the particles depositing in the tracheo-bronchial (TB) region: 356.46 μm²/cm³ vs. 95.97 μm²/cm³, respectively. The mass concentration of the fraction of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 0.02–1 μm (PM₁) increased 5-fold during the analyzed procedures and was 0.042 mg/m³ before, and 0.298 mg/m³ while the procedures continued. Conclusions At the time when bus servicing procedures continued in the ES room, a very high increase in all parameters of the analyzed particles was observed. The diesel exhaust particles exhibit a very high degree of fragmentation and, while their number is very high and their surface area is very large, their mass concentration is relatively low. The above findings confirm that ultrafine particles found in diesel exhaust fumes may be harmful to the health of the exposed people, and to their respiratory tract in particular.

Opis:
BackgroundExposure to fine and ultrafine particles from transport processes is a main consequence of emissions from engines, especially those with self-ignition. The particles released in these processes are a source of occupational and environmental particles exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the fine and nano-sized particles emission degree during work connected with transport and vehicle servicing.Material and MethodsThe tests were carried out at 3 workplaces of vehicles service and maintenance (a car repair workshop, a truck service hall, and a bus depot) during 1 work day in each of them. Measurements were performed using the following devices: DISCmini meters, GRIMM 1.109 optical counter and the DustTrak monitor. The number, surface area and mass concentration, and the number size distribution were analyzed.ResultsThe mean number concentration (DISCmini) increased during the analyzed processes, ranging from 4×104 p/cm3 to 8×104 p/cm3, and the highest concentration was found in the car repair workshop. The particles mean diameters during the processes ranged 31–47 nm, depending on the process. An increase in the surface area concentration value was observed in correlation with the particles number, and its highest concentration (198 m2/cm3) was found during work in the car repair workshop. The number size distribution analysis (GRIMM 1.109) showed the maximum value of the number concentration for particles sized 60 nm. The mean mass concentrations increased during the tested processes by approx. 40–70%, as compared to the background.ConclusionsAccording to the measurement results, all the workplaces under study constituted a source of an increase in all analyzed parameters characterizing emissions of nano-sized particles. Such working environment conditions can be harmful to the exposed workers; therefore, at such workplaces solutions for minimizing workers’ exposure, such as fume hoods or respiratory protection, should be used. Opis:
This articleexamines, based on the availableinformation and authors’ self-assessments, theenvironmental impact of turbine engine exhaust gases effect on the environment in the airport space during engines flight phases in the landing and takeoff cycle (LTO). The attention of aviation professionals is drawn to the fact that the amount of exhaust from the turbine engine is so significant that it may adversely change the ambient air at the airport. Consequently, increased emission level of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) during engine start-up and idle may pose a threat to the health of ramp staff. Also, high emission levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during takeoff, climb, cruise and descent is not without importance for the environment around the airport space. The paper gives CO2, HC, CO and NOx emission estimations based on ICAO Engine Emission Data Bank and the number of passenger operations at a medium-sized airport. It also provides calculation results of aircraft CO2, HC, CO and NOx emission using average times of aircraft maneuvers taken from aircraft Flight Data Recorder (FDR) in the LTO cycle various aircraft types at the airport. The latter, based on actual maneuvering times, lead to significantly reduced estimates of toxic exhaust gas emission volumes.

The paper presents a model of interaction of membranneless, ejector exhaust cooler with the helicopter turbine engine in terms of lowering the temperature and changes of CO2 and H2O shares in the air and exhaust gas mixture outflowed to the environment. Scope of work addresses issues arising from the need to reduce the levels of infrared emissions into the environment by certain types of helicopters. Noncooled exhaust gases outflowing into the environment form a significant share of infrared radiation in the helicopter flight. The subject of analysis and modeling is performance of added membranneless cooler, ingesting the cooling air from the environment on ejection principle. In the result of modelling process the preliminary estimates of the cooled exhaust parameters are obtained, as well as guidelines for the geometry of the device.

Przedstawiony artykuł jest kontynuacją referatów przedstawionych w ramach XXVII (2021) i XXVIII (2022) Konferencji z serii „Górnicze Zagrożenia Naturalne”. W obu artykułach przedstawiono innowacyjną technologię prewencji pożarowej w zrobach opartą na zatłaczaniu mieszanin gazów inertnych azotu i dwutlenku węgla uzyskanych z oczyszczania spalin z silnika gazowego spalającego metan.
The article continues and expands on the paper presented at the previous year's conference. The article presents an innovative technology of fire prevention in goaves, based on injection of nitrogen and carbon dioxide inert gas mixtures obtained from treatment of exhaust gases from a methane combusting gas engine. Currently, under normal conditions in a hard coal mine, the exhaust gases formed during combustion are emitted directly into the atmosphere. Innovative inerting technology which employs processing and reusing of the exhaust gases produced by methane-fueled gas engines, in an ecological context will contribute to the reduction of pollutant emissions in the mining sector. At the same time, integrating carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the correct ratio in the mixture allows to fully exploit the advantages of each of these gases, for which they are known when used in their separate forms. As a result, considering the possibility of generating a much larger amount of inert gases per time unit compared to the available technologies, and combining the physicochemical properties of nitrogen and carbon dioxide in one mixture, the innovative technological solution significantly increases the effectiveness of fire prevention, thus reducing the likelihood of an endogenous fire.

One of the ways to reduce exhaust emissions from vehicles is to replace worn-out shunting locomotives with road-rail tractors. The main purpose of this solution is to reduce the negative environmental impact of the vehicle and to reduce the fuel consumption compared to a shunting locomotive performing the same work. The tests on exhaust emissions of rail vehicles are carried out on an engine test bench, making it impossible to determine the environmental performance of these vehicles during real operation. Therefore, it is advisable to carry out measurements in real operating conditions in order to obtain reliable reference results. This enables the verification of vehicles ecological indicators in a wide range of operational work parameters. It is possible to obtain reliable results regarding the impact of the tested vehicle on the natural environment in this way and compare them with the applicable emission standards.

The paper presents implementation of the project of innovative and efficient technology for inertisation of active or sealed-off longwalls in underground mines, using an inert gas mixture obtained through gas engine exhaust gases purification, which prevents endogenous fires. The project consists of a single stage of industrial research and two stages of development, which include construction and demonstration of the prototype exhaust gas purification plant. The main feature of the technology is using exhaust gases produced by methane engines, which allows high efficiency of producing inert gases. In addition, integrating carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the correct ratio allows fully exploiting the advantages of each of the gases. As a result, by allowing generation of much larger amount of inert gases in a unit of time compared to the available technologies and by combining the physicochemical properties of both nitrogen and carbon dioxide in a single mixture, the innovative technology considerably increases the efficiency of fire prevention, lowering the probability of an endogenous fire occuring. In the context of ecology, innovative inertisation technology of processing and reusing exhaust gases produced by methane engine will decrease pollutant emission in mining. Thanks to low energy consumption it will also decrease the inertisation costs.

Opis:
Based on the available information and authors self-assessments, this article presents turbine engine exhaust gases effect on the environment, especially near to the aircraft and helicopters during their engines idle setting and take-offs. The concentration level of pollutants in gas turbine exhaust and its relation to the temperature and time of the combustion process is discussed. The article presents diffusion of the aircraft turbine engine exhaust in the airport area, focusing on aircraft take-off manoeuvre. The authors would like to draw attention of the aviation professionals to the fact that amount of exhaust from the turbine engine is so significant that may adversely change the ambient air near to the aircraft. Consequently, smaller amount of oxygen with increased level of carbon monoxide during engine start –up and idle can be a threat to the maintenance staff health. Also high emission level of the nitrogen oxides, especially during take-off and climb is indifferent for the environment. The paper gives an example of real fuel consumption and toxic gases emissions in the so-called landing and takeoff cycle (LTO) and during long-range flight. Turbine engines noise distribution and its intensity because of complex aerodynamic and thermodynamic processes is presented.

Opis:
The development of marine diesel engines has so far been directed towards increasing their power, reducing fuel consumption, burning fuels of the lowest possible quality and the extension of operation time. The rising pro-ecological pressure has made atmosphere pollution by exhaust gases of marine engines one of the main problems of environmental protection of recent years. The Gdansk Bay area, just like sea ports or coastal regions, is vulnerable to the effect of noxious compounds contained in vessel exhaust gases, besides those coming from industrial plants, power plants or vehicles. This concerns vessels both in ports and in the roads. In order to determine the share of vessels in environmental pollution and to counteract the harmful effects of toxic compounds in marine engine exhaust gases, it is necessary to know the emission values of these compounds from particular vessels, which is possible with the knowledge of their movement parameters, concentration values of particular compounds for these parameters and the atmospheric conditions. The report presents problems of modelling the NOx emission in exhaust gases from main marine Diesel engines, such as problems with construction special models describing the marine vessels movement or define real value of toxic compounds emission.

Opis:
The article discusses the effect of fuel dose division in the Diesel engine on smoke opacity and composition of the emitted exhaust gas. The research activities reported in the article include experimental examination of a small Diesel engine with Common Rail type supply system. The tests were performed on the engine test bed equipped with an automatic data acquisition system which recorded all basic operating and control parameters of the engine, and smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas. The parameters measured during the engine tests also included the indicated pressure and the acoustic pressure. The tests were performed following the pre-established procedure in which 9 engine operation points were defined for three rotational speeds: 1500, 2500 and 3500 rpm, and three load levels: 25, 40 and 75 Nm. At each point, the measurements were performed for 7 different forms of fuel dose injection, which were: the undivided dose, the dose divided into two or three parts, and three different injection advance angles for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. The discussion of the obtained results includes graphical presentation of contests of hydrocarbons, carbon oxide, and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, and its smoke opacity. The presented analyses referred to two selected cases, out of nine examined engine operation points. In these cases the fuel dose was divided into three parts and injected at the factory set control parameters. The examination has revealed a significant effect of fuel dose division on the engine efficiency, and on the smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas, in particular the content of nitrogen oxides. Within the range of low loads and rotational speeds, dividing the fuel dose into three parts clearly improves the overall engine efficiency and significantly decreases the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. Moreover, it slightly decreases the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. In the experiment the contents of nitrogen oxides markedly increased with the increasing injection advance angle for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. This, in turn, led to the decrease of the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. Fuel dose division into two and three parts leads to the increase of smoke opacity of the exhaust gas, compared to the undivided dose.

Opis:
The results of CFD modelling a dual fuel diesel engine powered with both methanol and diesel fuel is presented in the paper. Modelling was performed with 20 and a 50% energetic share of methanol in the entire dose. The analysis was conducted on both the thermodynamic parameters and exhaust toxicity of dual fuel engine. It was found that the various share of methanol influences the ignition delay of the combustion process and after start of main phase of combustion, the process occurs faster than in case of the diesel engine. It was found that the time of 10-90% burn of the fuel is much shorter than it is in the diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was characterized by higher indicated mean pressure in the whole range of diesel fuel injection timings. While analysing toxic exhaust emission from the dual fuel engine powered with methanol, it was found that the rate of NO formation was significantly higher than from the diesel engine. The combustion process in the dual fuel engine occurs more rapidly than in the conventional diesel engine, which contributes to form areas with high temperature, and in combination with presence of oxygen from the air and oxygen bonded in the methanol, promotes the NO formation. In the case of the dual fuel engine, it was found that soot emission was reduced. The engine running with diesel injection start at 8.5 deg before TDC, the soot emissions were more than twice lower in the dual fuel engine, while the emission of NO was much higher.

Article presents the results of fuel consumption calculation during cruise compared to remaining aircraft flight phases. Based on fuel consumption, methodology of pollutants quantitative estimation emitted by turbine engines has been developed. Material provides evaluation results of aircraft CO2, CO and NOx effusion using fuel consumption data taken from aircraft Flight Data Recorder (FDR) during cruise of various aircraft types. Knowledge of the amount of aircraft emissions on high altitudes is very important for climatologists in order to understand eventual changes in the Earth atmosphere due to aviation activities. The authors would like to draw attention of the aviation professionals to the fact that aircraft fuel consumption during cruise; thereby amount of toxic content in the exhaust from the turbine engine is significantly higher especially during flights against jet stream. Thousands flights of two operators were processed using algorithms developed by authors. The article gives an example of fuel consumption and thereby CO2, CO and NOx emission estimation based on engine performance taken from their test cell results. Calculations were performed with the consideration of the factor for engines deterioration through operation time provided by its manufacturer.

Due to the legal changes in the exhaust emission limits in the European Union meeting the new norms becomes more challenging for car manufacturers. The recent progress in the exhaust aftertreatment technology and commercially available aftertreatment systems. However, as the exhaust, systems become more and more complex the problem of high emissions in many engine-operating points that are not currently a part of the type approval tests remains. The article aims to address the limitations of the oxidation catalysts in current aftertreatment systems, mainly their light-off temperature, by investigating new options for in-cylinder catalysts. Placing the catalytic layer within the combustion chamber avoids a number of problems associated with these catalysts being a part of the aftertreatment system. Engine emission tests have been performed comparing the effects of using an in-cylinder Pt-Rh catalytic layer in relation to hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides emissions. The viable methods of producing a catalytic layer on engine components along with the choice of components to use for catalytic surfaces have also been discussed.

The second part of the article describes the technology of marine engine diagnostics making use of dynamic measurements of the exhaust gas temperature. Little-known achievements of Prof. S. Rutkowski of the Naval College in Gdynia (now: Polish Naval Academy) in this area are presented. A novel approach is proposed which consists in the use of the measured exhaust gas temperature dynamics for qualitative and quantitative assessment of the enthalpy flux of successive pressure pulses of the exhaust gas supplying the marine engine turbocompressor. General design assumptions are presented for the measuring and diagnostic system which makes use of a sheathed thermocouple installed in the engine exhaust gas manifold. The corrected thermal inertia of the thermocouple enables to reproduce a real timehistory of exhaust gas temperature changes.

The article discusses the problem of diagnostic informativeness of exhaust gas temperature measurements in turbocharged marine internal combustion engines. Theoretical principles of the process of exhaust gas flow in turbocharger inlet channels are analysed in its dynamic and energetic aspects. Diagnostic parameters are defined which enable to formulate general evaluation of technical condition of the engine based on standard online measurements of the exhaust gas temperature. A proposal is made to extend the parametric methods of diagnosing workspaces in turbocharged marine engines by analysing time-histories of enthalpy changes of the exhaust gas flowing to the turbocompressor turbine. Such a time-history can be worked out based on dynamic measurements of the exhaust gas temperature, performed using a specially designed sheathed thermocouple. The first part of the article discusses possibilities to perform diagnostic inference about technical condition of a marine engine with pulse turbocharging system based on standard measurements of exhaust gas temperature in characteristic control cross-sections of its thermal and flow system. Selected metrological issues of online exhaust gas temperature measurements in those engines are discusses in detail, with special attention being focused on the observed disturbances and thermodynamic interpretation of the recorded measuring signal. Diagnostic informativeness of the exhaust gas temperature measurements performed in steady-state conditions of engine operation is analysed in the context of possible evaluations of technical condition of the engine workspaces, the injection system, and the fuel delivery process.

The effect of injection assembly design attributed on NO emission was estimated. The similar slow speed, large bore MAN B&W engines performance were compared. The main factors used for evaluation were: fuel consumption, rotational speed, mean and maximum in-cylinder pressures and total concentrations of NOx, CO2, O2i CO, and HC. The engines performance and NO emission were compared with conventional 6S60MC-C and latest — electronically controlled 7S60ME-C. The CFD simulation of combustion and pollutant formation was created to represent processes of a marine large bore engine. The SMC-C engine operation and standard injection nozzle design was taken as a baseline for comparison with measured NO concentration. The predicted cylinder pressures showed reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. The predictive ability of used CFD simulation package was found to be quantitatively insufficient in terms of NOx emission. However, the predicted NO emission exhibits similar sensitivity with experiment results. The quantitative set of reference data for the validation of simulation results needs to be substantially improved. The determination offuel injection and cylinder pressure history can be identified as the most important source of inaccuracy. Finally, weighted NOx specific emission factor for both engines shows close value, sufficiently placed against IMO limit presented in Fig. 11. The results are promising and show that controlled combustion process is capable of fulfilling present and future NOx emission requirements. Modern marine engines are designed with adjustable components to allow the engine to be adjusted for maximum efficiency or NOx weighted emission factor when used in particular application.

The use of liquid fuels as an energy source for internal combustion engines is unavoidable nowadays, further consumption increases with the development of industry and economic growth of the country. The abundance of the world in fossil fuels is a highly controversial issue; however, irrespective of forecasts concerning deposits of mineral fuels, undisputable fact is that these are resources, which will deplete. Economic, environmental and legislative issues also impose a limitation of use of fossil fuels. Under the problems associated with fossil fuels, an interesting alternative may be fuel derived from renewable sources. Biodiesel understood as a renewable energy source, used to feed compression ignition engines seem to be the ideal solution to meet energy needs, facing so called economic circulation era. Many research results confirm that combustion of pure biofuels in the currently highly advanced injection systems causes many problems. Different biofuel properties from diesel, such as viscosity or density directly influences on combustion process and emission of toxic components in the exhaust gases. Therefore, biodiesel blends with diesel fuel in all proportions; the combustion of such mixtures carries a number of benefits, from consumption reduction of non-renewable resources to reduction of harmful components in the exhaust gases. In this paper, the effect of doping methyl esters on the process of combustion and exhaust gases emissions in a compression ignition engine feed with mixtures of esters and diesel was examined. Tests were performed on four-cylinder, CI Andoria ACDR engine equipped with Common Rail fuel injection system. In order to investigate the combustion process, cylinder pressure and toxic components in exhaust gases steady state measurements were performed.

It is known that Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) can be successfully applied not only for reducing NOx content in exhaust gases but also for reduction of combustion knock in SI engines. From this point of view, EGR can be particularly effective for knock elimination in the hydrogen reciprocating engine. Additionally with the application of EGR, the H2-air combustion can be maintained at the stoichiometric ratio enabling highly efficient NOx reduction in catalytic converters. In this paper a strategy of estimating EGR for the naturally aspirated, hydrogen fuelled engine is explained. On the basis of this strategy, the closed loop control system of the EGR was built and was implemented for the single cylinder CFR engine. There is also an outline of the test bed and several examples of in-cylinder pressure courses recorded under various EGR percentages. Next, the impact of EGR on combustion knock in the hydrogen fuelled engine is presented. Finally, conclusions concerning EGR application for hydrogen combustion in the IC engine are presented. EGR calculation and control scheme, main diagram of EGR calculation, subroutine (Sub-block) for calculating the molecular weight of EGR gases, in-cylinder pressure traces for several EGR levels during hydrogen combustion in the CFR engine, the fluctuating component of in-cylinder pressure during hydrogen combustion with several levels of EGR, peak pressure of fluctuation component of in-cylinder pressure vs. EGR percentage are presented in the paper.

The article concerns the evaluation of exhaust emissions from turbine engines. The results of the work are associated with development of analytical methods useful in estimating the emissions of harmful exhaust gases during turbine engine operating conditions. The results of studies and the interdependence between emission indicators and operating parameters were pointed out. The analysis of these interdependence shows a strong similarity in the nature of changes of particular relationship in relation to the engines tested, but also shows their individuality. The article shows the direction of further work to develop methods of assessment the emissions from turbine engines during their operation. The methods developed for the analysis of ecological parameters during operation of turbine engines may be useful to implement in models of assessing pollutant emissions from maritime transport and to analyze and evaluate the impact of transport on the environment. This assessment may be important to consider, with regards to meeting the newly introduced emission standards, in accordance with the MARPOL directive, which has been in force since January of 2015.

This paper presents the results of the diesel engine research on the energy performance, components of exhaust gases and smoke and parameters related to the supply system for VW 1.9 TDI working in 2 modes: with standard, non-cooled EGR system, and without this system. All of measurements were carried out on the some engine speed – 2000 rpm (speed of maximum engine torque) and various engine loads. It was found that the serial engine control unit switches the EGR system off above 150 Nm engine load (Momax = 295 Nm). In this range of load the engine running with EGR is characterized by higher fuel consumption (lower total efficiency) ca. 5%, compared with engine without EGR. Concentration of NOx in exhaust gases was lower up to 45% but, at the same time, exhaust gas smoke and concentration of carbon oxides were strongly increasing. It can be seen that EGR system increases the temperature (up to 110°C) and changes the composition of air-exhaust gas in the intake manifold. One of reason of this fact is self-changing start of injection. Additional effect of EGR is lower air pressure behind turbocharger, because the flow of exhaust gases (into EGR) is taken before the turbine.

The internal combustion engine plays a vital role in transportation, industry, and shipping. However, diesel as one of the main fuels for internal combustion engines, caused many environmental and human health problems. In order to solve the problems, more researchers have been committed to the research of alternative fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel, and its characteristics are similar to traditional diesel. It can be mixed with pure diesel. It has been found that a mix with pure diesel in a certain ratio can effectively reduce the negative effects caused by its characteristics, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the NOx and PM emissions. This article mainly reviews the effects of the mixture of biodiesel and diesel on engine combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions, including three parts: part (1) summarizes and analyzes the biodiesel’s production and characteristics, part (2) analyzes the engine’s performance under different working conditions, and part (3) studies and analyzes the exhaust emission under different working conditions.

Presented paper shows the results of the laboratory tests on the relationship between throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct and a gaseous emission from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory, four-stroke, DI diesel engine, operated at loads from 50 kW to 250 kW at a constant speed equal to 750 rpm. During the laboratory tests over 50 parameters of the engine were measured with its technical condition recognized as a „working properly” and with simulated leakage of both air intake valve and exhaust gas valve on the second cylinder. The results of this laboratory research confirm that the leakage of cylinder valves causes no significant changes of the thermodynamic parameters of the engine. Simulated leakages through the inlet and exhaust valve caused a significant increase in fuel consumption of the engine. Valve leakages cause an increase of the exhaust gas temperature behind the cylinder with leakage and behind other cylinders. The exhaust gas temperature increase is relatively small and clearly visible only at low loads of the engine. The increase of the temperature and pressure of the charging air behind the intercooler were observed too. Charging air temperature is significantly higher during the engine operation with inlet valve leakage. The study results show significant increases of the CO, NOx and CO2 emission for all the mentioned malfunctions. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of the exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air intake duct and the exhaust gas duct of the marine engine.

It is assumed that elements of Exhaust Gases Cleaning Systems creates additional resistance along fumes duct and can affect energetic process of combustion. In the paper are presented results of researches aimed on detection and recognition of dumping effect in the exhaust pipeline using devices dedicated for engine’s torque and angular speed measurement. The experiment was carried out in test stand of Gdynia Maritime University; equipped with one-cylinder, low speed engine working in two-stroke mode. Effect of increasing of gas flow resistance was achieved by installation of shutters in cross-section of exhaust pipe. The shutters diminished active flow „window“ for 50% of normal crossection area of the exhaust pipe The plan of measurements encompasses registration of Instantaneous Angular Speed of the engine’s shaft and parallel registration of Instantaneous Value of Shaft Torsion, what reflect fluctuation of torque. Value of angular speed and toque enables exact calculation of power produced by the engine. Experiment included measurements at different levels of engine’s load and with changes of mean rotational speed. Angular speed and shaft’s torsion were measured and recorded using system ETNP-10 which is based on optical sensor and set of toothed discs. That method gives high accuracy of angular speed and torsion measurement. Results of experiment are presented as difference of related curves of values’ variations of angular speed and torsion occurring at the propulsion shaft connecting the engine and the water brake.

Today, more and more attention is paid to search for alternative fuels, which would be not only environmentally friendly, but also cost-competitive to petroleum fuels. In the recent years much attention is paid to investigations at adaptation of combustion engine to run on bio-fuels. Results of the investigations show, that methyl and ethyl alcohols could belong to one from the most promising and future bio-fuels, being a serious alternative to petroleum fuels. Interest in these fuels comprises such areas as exploration of raw materials to production of the alcohols, development of technology of their production, especially 2nd generation of ethyl alcohol, special fuelling and control systems, design changes of the engines fuelled with alcohols. In the present paper are shown test results of Fiat 1.3 Multipoint engine fuelled in dual fuel system with methanol and gasoline. In this engine one assembled prototype fuel supply system with duplex injectors on each cylinder, to injection of methanol and gasoline. Implemented system enables fuelling with gasoline only, with methanol only, or simultaneously with gasoline and methanol with any fraction of the methanol. Change of fuelling system and change of methanol fraction can be accomplished in course of engine operation. Performed investigations showed advantageous effect of the methanol on toxicity of exhaust gases. One confirmed reduction of emissions of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide. The biggest changes in the concentration occurred in case of fuelling with the methanol only, and amounted to: 2-3 times reduction of the THC, reduction of NOx with 40-60%. Differences in concentration of NOx increased together with growth of engine load, and hence, they concern such areas of engine operation, where the biggest quantities of the NOx are emitted. In case of dual fuel feeding, effect of reduction of concentration of the components discussed here decreases according to reduced fraction of the methanol. Changes in the emissions discussed here are obtained with maintained engine performance and growth of overall efficiency of the engine. Implemented system eliminates problems of stratification of methanol-gasoline mixture in low temperatures and in presence of water. The system can be adapted to any liquid fuels.

Changing selected engine structure parameters, especially fuel system parameters, affects the emission of harmful compounds in the exhaust gas. Changes in harmful compound emission are frequently ambiguous, as they highly depend on parameters controlling the combustion process. An additional problem is that simple interactions are frequently accompanied with mutual influence of these parameters. Therefore, we can say about different sensitivity of diagnostic parameters to the same excitations coming from the engine structure but executed at different loading states. When the set of diagnostic parameters is numerous and the values of these parameters are similar, there is a real problem with their correct classification, frequently based on subjective assessment by the analyst. In the article, the authors propose a methodology to classify the recorded diagnostic parameters. In earlier works by the authors [4,6,7], the information capacity index method (the Hellwig method) was proposed as the measure of diagnostic parameter sensitivity. Based on this method, a rankling of diagnostic parameters can be created which divides the set of diagnostic variables into stimulators and destimulators. Novel authors’ approach to the presented problem consists in including nominants, i.e. variables with the most favourable value for the analysed aspect of the research, in the set of diagnostic variables. This normalisation of the set is believed to be helpful for making a diagnostic decision free from analyst’s arbitrariness. The zero unitarization method can also be helpful in creating diagnostic tests.

Real Driving Emissions
Opis:
This paper presents the results of tests conducted in real traffic conditions in a mountainous area, taking into account the natural topography characteristics. The tested vehicle was of SUV type (Sport Utility Vehicle) with gasoline and Diesel engine, complying with emission standard Euro 5. Using the portable system for measurement of harmful substances, measurements of pollution emissions were conducted. The results obtained confirmed the substantial changes in the emission of harmful components of exhaust fumes with the change of the road grade. In all considered cases, it was confirmed that with the increasing route grade, the road emissions of all harmful components of exhaust fumes increase, however this increase varies for different pollutants. The most sensitive for spark ignition engines is emission of particulate matter, which is associated mainly with the compression ignition engines. For small changes of the road grade, the most sensitive seems to be road emission of carbon monoxide, for gasoline engines emission of particulate matter is specific, first, to all diesel engines, increase of the road grade to 10% caused on average twofold increase in the emission of harmful components of exhaust gases.

One of the ways for toxic emissions reduction from internal combustion engines, beside external Exhaust purification systems and alternative fuels, is direct intervention into engine combustion process. The inner catalyst application, in form of ceramic active coating applied inside of combustion chamber, is one of the examples of that kind of solution. The application of active coating inside of a compression-ignition engine (diesel engine) may have an important impact on several stages of combustion process: fuel cracking, fore-flame phase, combustion phase and secondary combustion phase. Investigations of such construction are very rare in the literature. The paper presents the results of the researches which aim was analysis of inner catalyst application impact on toxic emissions. As a catalyst platinum and rhodium was used. As a catalyst support and local thermal barrier a zirconium ceramic coating was used. The catalyst was located on the gasoline engine valves surface. The research was done in Emission Research Laboratory of the Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines. The analysis was done according to European standard (EN ISO 16017-1: 2006) on gas chromatograph (Yarian 450 GC) equipped in capillary column and flame-ionization detector (FID). The results of the researches proofed effectiveness of that solution on toxic emissions limitation.

Opis:
The article briefly describes the problem of air pollution caused by sea-going ships and the resulting restrictions on the emission of toxic and harmful chemical compounds in the exhaust of marine engines, introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the International Convention for the Prevention of Sea Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78). Such emissions provide a significant metrological problem, not only for the owners of operating seagoing ships, but also for shipyards, maritime administration offices and environmental protection inspectors. For this reason, the article’s author is developing research issues related to the diagnosing the exhaust emissions of marine engines under operating conditions, i.e. with limited control (measurement) susceptibility. This is particularly important in the period of intensive implementation of a new category of marine fuel, so-called modified fuels with low sulphur content. As part of the problem, a computational model of the parameters characterising the exhaust emissions of a marine engine in operation is presented in this article. This model is based on the measurement of the engine’s control parameters, using a standard (stationary) measurement system and a portable diagnostic system, configured for the purpose of this research. Presented here are representative measurements and calculation results (both obtained by the author and provided by the manufacturer) from the chemical exhaust gas emissivity of one of the ship engines operated. These confirm the adequacy of the calculation model developed and the diagnostic effectiveness of the measuring equipment applied. The methodology developed for experimental testing may also be implemented for the operation of other types of marine engines, provided that the basic chemical composition of the fuel supply and the engine load characteristics and hourly fuel consumption are known. Moreover, there is the possibility of indicating the cylinders and measuring the chemical composition of exhaust gases in the high-temperature part of the exhaust duct.

Opis:
In ultralight aviation, a very important engine parameter is the power-to-weight ratio. On the one hand, there is a tendency to minimize the size and weight of engines, and on the other hand, there is a demand to achieve the highest possible power by using supercharging systems. Increasing power brings many benefits, but it also increases temperature in the exhaust system, posing a threat to delicate parts of the ultralight aircraft fuselage. Therefore, it is necessary to control temperature values in the engine exhaust system. This article presents the temperature distribution in the exhaust system of an aircraft engine by the example of a four-cylinder Rotax 912 engine with an electronic fuel injection system. The research was conducted in two stages: measurements were made first for the engine without a turbocharger with an original exhaust system and later for its modified version with an added turbocharger system. The paper presents a comparative analysis of exhaust gas temperatures measured at three points: 30, 180 and 1000 mm from the cylinder head. The tests were conducted for the same preset engine operating conditions at constant speed and manifold air pressure. It has been shown that the exhaust temperature in the exhaust manifold decreases with the distance from the cylinder head. The highest gradient, over three times higher than the gas temperature from 589.9 °C to 192.3 °C, occurred in the manifold with a turbocharger for 2603 RPM and 31 kPa of manifold air pressure. The introduction of turbocharging causes an increase in exhaust gas temperatures before the turbocharger by an average of 12%, with this increase being greater for operating points of higher inlet manifold pressure. Turbocharging also causes a significant decrease in exhaust gas temperatures behind the turbocharger and the silencer because the temperature drops there by an average of 25%.

Opis:
There is a tendency to increase the economic efficiency of engine operation and energy efficiency and reduce emissions of toxic combustion products. One way to reduce emissions of toxic components in exhaust gases is raising the coolant boiling point, which requires the simultaneous increase in pressure in the cooling system. Previous studies suggest that such a system can reduce the amount of toxic components in exhaust gases, particularly at low engine load when the engine exhaust temperature is too low to make effective catalytic action. The paper presents the model and experimental test stands to research the cooling system at an elevated temperature of the coolant. The speed and load characteristics of the standard cooling systems and pressure were presented. The research results were designed to determine the effect of elevated temperature in the cooling system on the composition of the gases. The characteristics of the external speed and load were performed with standard cooling systems and pressure. When performing velocity characteristics of the engine was loaded up in the whole range of engine speed from 1000 to 4000 rev/min, while the load characteristics were performed for different values of torque at constant speed in the range from 1500-4000 rpm. The results confirmed the benefits of increasing the temperature of the coolant. The presented characteristics that apply pressure cooling system reduces the amount of toxic components in exhaust gases, particularly at low engine load, in which the engine operates most often in urban conditions.

The article discusses the development trends and the solutions currently used in modern engines of motorcycles. Less stringent exhaust emission standards, as well as other purpose engines are the cause of significant discrepancies between the design engines of motorcycles and cars. The increase in wealth of society contributes to the popularity of two-wheeled vehicles, which also entails the need to optimize their con-structure in order to meet the high customer requirements.

Opis:
The article presents a brief discussion about issues of energy harvesting of waste heat generated during the operation of the SI (spark ignition) internal combustion engine (ICE). The available methods of implementation and the problems associated with them were presented. In recent years, there has been an increase in the significance of successful researches on new types of thermoelectric modules. Despite relatively low efficiency of the thermoelectric modules, a systematic growth in their interest is observed. Their application seems to be reasonable because of many advantages - mainly the simplicity. The paper contains the literature review in the subject of interest. For the purpose of this work, a test rig was designed and manufactured. The test rig consists of a single thermoelectric module and makes it possible to work in variety of operating conditions for different values of the exhaust gas flow rate and temperature. It is equipped with an automatic, servo controlled, movable element, which control direction of the exhaust gas flow and as a result changes the heat flux transferred via the thermoelectric module. This solution allows achieving the maximum power of the thermoelectric module in a wide range of ICE operating conditions and also allows adjusting operating parameters to actual working conditions of the whole system. The problems encountered during the construction of the test rig and the proposed solutions of practical implementation were described. Experimental research was conducted on a small size automobile petrol engine. The influence of electrical parameters at the output on the whole system was analysed. The results suggest that the actual thermoelectric module parameters, especially the thermal conductivity, vary from declared by the producer. Maximum achieved electric power output reached about 10 W from a single thermoelectric module (57 mm x 54 mm), which is nearly half of the declared value.

The fuel presently used for feeding of aircraft piston engines (petrol including TEL) is characterized by "strong unfriendliness" for environment. Many research centres have been going on fuels investigation, which could substitute Avgas utilized in aviation. This is why are there no being in force for Europe standards defining the allowable emission of pollutions in exhaust gases of aircraft piston engines (equivalent to EURO - standards introduced for traction engines). During the research works on test bed carried out at Institute of Aviation the performance offour-stroke aircraft carburettor piston engine supplied by "classical" aircraft petrol and the E - 85 fuel (mixture of petrol and ethanol) were compared. Except for measuring the functional parameters of engine (rotational speed, torque, specific fuel consumption, pressures and temperatures) the emissions of gaseous pollutants incorporated in exhaust gas were measured and analyzed. The range of modifications of engine supply system - necessary to introduce in case of changing of fuel type within the tested engine -was worked up. There are foreseen comparative test of fuelling the engine with mixtures of petrol and alcohols in different proportions in the next phase of research works.

Opis:
The number of vehicles in the world is growing rapidly. Therefore, the global consumption of crude oil is increasing and its natural resources are being depleted. It causes the rise of oil fuel cost. Constantly rising energy prices and emironmental concerns have made energy saving the highest priority for transportation operators. The main goal of vehicles' operation is economy. The fuel consumption of the most popular internal combustion engines depends on various factors, and one of the most important of them is thermal condition. Energy or fuel saving is the main way to reduce operational expenses of vehicles. This paper aims to investigate fuel consumption of 1.9 liter volume direct injection diesel engine and to construct a diagram of the dependence of the amount of smoke in exhaust on the temperature of engine's operation. The temperature was fixed in the engine's crankcase, while the temperature of cooling liquid was measured at four points as well as during the engine's bench testing. Unexpected test results are obtained: when the temperature of exhaust gases rises above 70-75 °C, the amount of smoke increases by a few times. Finally, basic conclusions and recommendations are given.

The article presents results from IC engine tests on combustion of alcohol fuel with the addition of torgas condensate. Torgas is a by-product created from the torrefaction of Sida hermaphrodita. It was obtained from torrefaction carried out at a temperature of 400°C. Torgas was condensed in a tubular cooler. The basic fuel was butanol. This fuel was chosen, because regular hydrocarbon based fuels got delaminated while blended with torgas condensate. The condensate dissolves in alcohol therefore the choice was justified. In the mixture, the volume ratio of alcohol to condensate was 4:1. The combustion was carried out in a spark-ignition, single-cylinder engine with a cubic capacity of 650 cm3. The engine was able to vary its compression ratio. The engine worked at full load at maximum open throttle. The engine body was heated to a temperature of 95°C and this temperature was maintained throughout the testing period. The engine was running at 850 rpm. The first stage of the experiment included determination of the optimal ignition angle for butanol as a reference fuel and for a mixture of butanol and torgas condensate. The optimal spark angle was estimated based on the maximum indicated work. Three compression ratios, i.e.: CR=8.8, 10 and 11.2 were used. All tests were performed for a stoichiometric air fuel ratio. The obtained in-cylinder pressure diagrams for the reference fuel and the fuel with the addition of condensate were compared with each other. The rate of pressure increase inside the cylinder was calculated. For all tests, the following exhaust components were measured: CO2, CO and HC.

Opis:
This article reports the effects of CuO/water based coolant on specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of four stroke single cylinder diesel engine. The CuO nanoparticles of 27 nm were used to prepare the nanofluid-based engine coolant. Three different volume concentrations (i.e 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) of CuO/water nanofluids were prepared by using two-step method. The purpose of this study is to investigate the exhaust emissions (NOx), exhaust gas temperature and specific fuel consumption under different load conditions with CuO/water nanofluid. After a series of experiments, it was observed that the CuO/water nanofluids, even at low volume concentrations, have a significant influence on exhaust emissions. The experimental results revealed that, at full load condition, the specific fuel consumption was reduced by 8.6%, 15.1% and 21.1% for the addition of 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% CuO nanoparticles with water, respectively. Also, the emission tests were concluded that 881 ppm, 853 ppm and 833 ppm of NOx emissions were observed at high load with 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% volume concentrations of CuO/water nanofluids, respectively.

In the paper the results of experimental investigations on a turbocharged, four-cylinder direct injection SI engine with the displacement of 1.7 dm3 are presented. In the investigations, particular attention was paid to the possibility of including the control of fuel dose, injection advance angle, exhaust gas recirculation rate and the temperature and pressure of air charge in the inlet manifold with the intent to determine the content of the toxic components and the smokiness of exhaust gases. The results of the investigations are presented in the form of approximation functions of several variables. The variables are the engine control parameters mentioned above. An analysis of the investigation results is presented and a possible application of the approximation functions in the optimisation of engine control parameters is indicated with the aim of selecting such values of control parameters as would guarantee a reduction of the nitrogen oxides content in the exhaust gases while maintaining the content of other toxic components and the assumed engine exploitation parameters on an acceptable level.

The article presents the factors influencing the direction in which goes the development of internal combustion engines, which undeniably is to reduce the negative impact on the environment. It is currently minimized, inter alia, by increasing the fuel injection pressure. But the high pressure generated by modern injection systems make previously used materials do not provide adequate stability. It becomes necessary to use more advanced materials that article briefly characterized, and provides examples of their use in fuel systems.

In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

The article presents bench test results of a four-stroke, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated, DI diesel engine operating with neat JP-8 fuel (J) and its blends with Diesel fuel (D) in following proportions by volume: 90/10 (J+10D), 70/30 (J+D30), 50/ 50 (J+D50), 30/70 (J+D70), and 100% diesel fuel (DF). The purpose of the research was to analyse and compare changes occurred in the autoignition delay, combustion events, engine performance efficiency, emissions, and smoke of the exhaust when running on JP-8 fuel, jet-diesel fuel blends, and diesel fuel at a full (100%) engine load and speed of 1400 min–1 at which maximum torque occurs and rated speed of 2200 min–1. It was found that the start of injection (SOI) and the start of combustion (SOC) occurred earlier in an engine cycle and the autoignition delay decreased by 9.0% and 12.7% due to replacement of aviation JP-8 fuel with diesel fuel at a full load and the latter speeds. Maximum in-cylinder pressure was 6.8% and 4.0% higher when operating with diesel fuel, whereas brake thermal efficiency was 3.3% and 7.7% higher, and brake specific fuel consumption 2.8% and 7.0% lower when using fuel blend J+D50 compared with the respective values measured with neat JP-8 fuel. Emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were 13.3% and 13.1% higher from a straight diesel running at speed of 1400 min–1, and 19.0% and 19.5% higher at a higher speed of 2200 min–1. The carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and total unburned hydrocarbons (HC) decreased 2.1 times and by 12.3% when running with fuel blend J+D70 at speed of 2200 min–1 compared with those values measured with jet fuel. Smoke of the exhaust was 53.1% and 1.9% higher when using fuel blend J+D10 than that of 46.9% and 70.0% measured with jet fuel at speeds of 1400 and 2200 min–1. The engine produced 34.5% more smoke from combustion of fuel blend J+D70 at the low speed of 1400 min–1, but smoke converted to be 11.3% lower when operating at a higher speed of 2200 min–1.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań drogowych samochodu dostawczego w warunkach jazdy pozamiejskiej. W wykonanych pomiarach wykorzystano mobilną aparaturę do badań toksyczności spalin typu PEMS. Badania przeprowadzono w rzeczywistych warunkach ruchu samochodu – przejazdy drogą ekspresową w rejonach metropolii poznańskiej. Na podstawie pozyskanych danych eksperymentalnych dokonano oceny użytkowania pojazdu uwzględniając minimalną emisję toksycznych zanieczyszczeń w spalinach.
The article presents road tests results of a delivery van in extra-urban driving conditions. The aim of this study was to verify the thesis of the significant increase in the emission of toxic gases with increasing engine speed. As a result of the undertaken analysis the results on different environmental pressures for speed driving were taken, using different gear. The use of a high gear, possible for use in given vehicle operating conditions, it is particularly emphasized by proponents of ecological driving style, which is called the eco-driving. The article examines the issue of emissions in the exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in relation to the utility vehicle of LDV type, driven by compression ignition engine. The measurements were made using mobile equipment PEMS type for testing the toxicity of exhaust gases. The study was conducted in real traffic conditions of the car – the expressway drives in Poznan metropolitan areas. On the basis of obtained experimental data the vehicle using, having a minimum emission of toxic pollutants in the exhaust, was evaluated.

Opis:
Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

The control of nox emissions from marine engines proves a challenge. Diesel engine manufacturers have been investigating a variety of methods with aim of reducing nox emissions. Currently, the plasma technology is undergoing rapid development in application to diesel engine exhausts. A combination of non-thermal plasma with catalysts can be referred to plasma assisted catalysts technology. This paper briefly describes research efforts aimed at non-thermal plasma reactor development for ship use with primary focus on NO oxidation condition. The part scale plasma reactor models have been designed and manufactured for the purpose of this trial. Exhaust emission plasma after-treatment module was fitted on exhaust outlet path of the marine test bed engine for fractional exhaust gas stream examination. Subsequently, the comprehensive series of trials were performed to assess the exhaust flow properties of the main exhaust channel and plasma reactor by-pass duct. Emission measurements were carried out on engine at steady-state operation. The NO reaction activity was a major task of the experiment and throughout the measurements, the engine outlet nox levels (NO and NO2) were monitored with simultaneous NO, NO2, N2O level recording after NTP reactor.

This paper presents possible use of results of exhaust gas composition testing of self - ignition engine for technical state assessment of its charge exchange system under assumption that there is strong correlation between considered structure parameters and output signals in the form of concentration of toxic compounds (ZT) as well as unambiguous character of their changes. Concentration of the analyzed ZT may be hence considered to be symptoms of engine technical state. At given values of the signals and their estimates it is also possible to determine values of residues which may indicate a type of failure. Available tool programs aimed at analysis of experimental data commonly make use of multiple regression model which allows to investigate effects and interaction between model input quantities and one output variable. Application of multi-equation models provides great freedom during analysis of measurement data as it makes it possible to simultaneously analyze effects and interaction of many output variables. It may be also implemented as a tool for preparation of experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools such as neural networks which , in contrast to multi-equation models, make it possible to recognize a state at multistate classification and - in consequence – to do diagnostic inference. Here , these authors present merits of application of the above mentioned analytical tools on the example of tests conducted on an experimental engine test stand.

Informacje te wykorzystywane są do zdefiniowania m.in. wartości obciążenia silnika podczas eksploatacji środka transportu. W artykule przedstawiono propozycję algorytmu dotyczącego oceny wartości obciążenia tłokowego silnika lotniczego o zapłonie iskrowym na podstawie wartości temperatury spalin i prędkości obrotowej wału korbowego.
During the research of exhaust emission under operating conditions of means of transport the engine's parameters are highly useful information. That information is used to define values of the engine load during the operation of the means of transport. In most vehicles produced nowadays the information from diagnostic systems is used for this purpose. The other hand, emissions testing of harmful compounds from piston engines used in small aircrafts is difficult because not all aircraft are equipped in on-board flight data recorders. Therefore, in the area of emissions from aircraft piston engines appeared the necessity of creation tool allowing evaluation engine load during the measurements under operating conditions. The article includes an algorithm for the assessment of the load values of aircraft's spark-ignition engines based on exhaust gas temperature and rotation speed of the crankshaft.

In the work the results of tests on 50H21G9N4 and H9S2 valve steels with pad welded stellite layers are presented. Basic properties such as tribological and erosion resistance as well as high temperature oxidation resistance were determined. Testing conditions were accepted with certain simplification owing to the complexity oj mechanical and thermal load exhaust valves and, therefore, they do not reflect real operating conditions accurately. Specimens with and without laser, plasma and TIG pad welded stellite layers were subject to tests. The conducted tests showed the highest tribological resistance of stellite layers under the conditions of dry friction in comparison with the material in the initial state as well as plasma and TIG pad welded stellite layers. The main mechanism of the abrasive wear of the surface layer is an adhesive wear by breaking the connections and adhesions that are being formed. The research on wear by abrasive erosion showed a smaller decrease in the mass of specimens with pad welded stellite layers in comparison with plasma and TIG pad welded stellite layers as well as the material in the initial form without the pad welded stellite layer. The resistance of stellite layers to high temperature oxidation was showed in the research on heat resistance. Moreover, it was found that pad welding does not have any significant influence on the heat resistance of stellite layers.

Opis:
Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

Opis:
One of the important design parameters for internal combustion engines is the geometric compression ratio epsilon. It is defined by the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber Vmax at the bottom dead centre (BDC) piston position and a minimum volume of the combustion chamber Vmin at the top dead centre (TDC) piston position. Conventional engines have this parameter set unchangeable, what is not the solution ensuring optimal benefits coming from the heat release in the combustion process, especially under altering conditions of load and speed in which they perform powering the road vehicles. It is reflected mainly in exhaust emission problem. Despite a considerable progress, further improving the ecological and energetic performances of the piston engines faces severe system limits, elimination of which requires major changes in engine design, including conversion the fixed compression ratio into the flexible one. For such innovative engine designs with so-called variable compression ratio VCR feature the geometric compression ratio parameter is as the one of the operation regulators. Due to the new development prospect the paper scope is an analysis and showing some results for the impact of compression ratio on the emissions of selected exhaust harmful components for a direct injection diesel engine. The schematics and prototype solutions for VCR technology are briefly presented too.

Do najniebezpieczniejszych należą węglowodory, tlenki węgla i tlenki azotu.
The engines of I.C.E.-powered sawing machines make a source of toxic substances expelled with exhaust gas. The most dangerous of them include: hydrocarbons, carbon oxides and nitrogen oxides. Their operators are exposed to harmful action of these compounds first of all while felling trees, when engine works under high load. The authors made an effort to determine exhaust gas constitution depending on engine load. It turned out that their concentration primarily depends on constitution of air-fuel mixture. Moreover, it depends on sawing machine engine load. The amount of toxic substances grows with increasing engine load, and its rotational speed drop.

Energy Efficiency Design Index

Opis:
The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

The paper compares the basic parameters of the process of combustion in the Fiat MultUet 1.3 SDE 90 KM with and without an exhaust gas recirculation system, running according to load characteristics with the following engine crankshaft rotational speeds: n=l200 ipm, 1750 rpm and 3000 rpm. During testing, the engine was supplied with commercial diesel oil. The tested engine was provided with external exhaust gas recirculation consisting in supplying a specific amount of exhaust gas back to the cylinder via an EGR electric solenoid valve. The exhaust gas delivered to the cylinder was cooled. Exhaust gas is composed of inert gases that do not take part in the combustion process. This causes, above all, a lower rate of pressure increase in the cylinder and a lower heat release rate. Thanks to exhaust gas recirculation, lower maximal temperatures prevail in the cylinder, and the engine's operation is "softer." During experimental testing, the variation of cylinder pressure and chamber pressure, the injector operation control current magnitude, effective power, torque and the hourly fuel consumption, as well as the exhaust gas recirculation rate. Actual indicator diagrams plotted were used for determining the heat release characteristics, based on which the percentage fractions of the burned out fuel charge injected during one engine running cycle namely 5, 10, 50 and 90% fractions were determined. In addition, the indicator indices were determined. The paper has demonstrated the effect of exhaust gas recirculation on the processes occurring inside the cylinder in the self ignition internal combustion engine.

Article presents methodology of pollutants quantitative estimation emitted by turbine engines. Provides calculation results of aircraft CO2, CO and NOx effusion using fuel consumption data taken from aircraft Flight Data Recorder (FDR) in the so–called landing and takeoff cycle (LTO) and during remaining flight phases (climb from 3000 feet to cruise altitude, cruise, descent to 3000 feet) of various aircraft types. The authors would like to draw attention of the aviation professionals to the fact that amount of toxic content in the exhaust from the turbine engine is significant especially during cruise, but turbine engine emission standards are applied only to LTO cycle defined in the ICAO Annex 16 vol.2. The article gives an example of CO and NOx emission estimation based on engine performance taken from ICAO Engine Emission Data Bank. Such engine authors named “ideal”. Calculations were done using actual values of aircraft fuel consumption and duration of the airplane maneuvers for each flight.

Ultralight aviation is based on piston engines requiring both performance and reliability. An important aspect is also the requirements for the installation of such an engine on an airframe, especially its heat emission. This is firstly because of the need to ensure proper engine cooling and secondly because composite elements of the airframe skin are not exposed to excessive overheating. For this purpose, bench tests of the temperature distribution of the exhaust system of ROTAX 912 engine were carried out. Measurements were taken at 6 points of the exhaust system, where the temperature of the exhaust gases and exhaust pipes were measured. The tests covered a wide range of engine operation. The paper presents the temperature distribution at selected points in relation to the engine speed and load.

Biofuel use is one of the basic strategies to reduce the negative impact of aviation on the environment. Over the past two decades, a number of biofuels produced from plants, lubricants and maintenance products have been developed and introduced. New fuels must have specific physicochemical parameters and meet stringent standards. his article presents a comparative analysis of the exhaust emissions measurement results from jet engines powered by traditional aviation kerosene and its blends with ATJ (Alcohol to Jet) biofuel. The concentrations of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were measured. Measurements were conducted in laboratory conditions for various engine load values. Based on the analysis, it was found that the use of biofuel increases the concentration of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas relative to aviation kerosene. The use of biofuel did not result in an increase in fuel consumption and related carbon dioxide emissions. Based on the conducted research, it was found that biofuel use did not affect the ecological properties of the engine significantly. In addition, a correlation analysis of the measurement results from both engines was carried out.

Opis:
This paper touches problem of transportation pollution focusing on NOx reducing in the India. There were India country chosen for study as the second populated country and most polluted cities in the world. As from statistics, it is known that more than 65% of Indian cars are old and they are the main reason of air pollution. Most of the old cars do not have any control measures for eliminating deadliest gases. Dumping the old cars is not possible, as the poor owns most of the old cars. For eliminating the pollution from old cars, the possible remedy is to control the emission of pollutants. Comparing to all gases in exhaust, nitrogen oxides are the dangerous one. It can may cause up to death. The best method to control the NOx gas is EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves. This research mainly focuses on the possible ways of installing EGR in old engines and fabricate an EGR in one of the Indian cars. Maruti Suzuki 800 is best of for fabricating EGR, as it is a base model and most sold Indian car. As the result, there tremendous decreasing in NOx emission also the emission CO2 was reduced. The investigation about fabricating EGR in old vehicle results a positive output after calculated the cost of the fabrication, time consumption, work challenges and other facts. As Indian government adopt this concept, they can reduce the pollution from all types of vehicles to a great extend in few years of time with low investment.

Opis:
The test results and their analysis was discussed in this article. The tests were carried out in accordance with the WLTP (Worldwide Light Duty Test Procedure), on a passenger car with a compression ignition engine. The analysis was conducted doe the following variables: vehicle speed, exhaust emission rate and fuel consumption volumetric rate. The subject of the research are exhaust emission components that are harmful to the health of living organisms: carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, as well as greenhouse gases. The research results have shown a very large range of values for carbon monoxide, organic compounds and nitrogen oxides emission rate characteristics. The average distance-specific emissions values of carbon monoxide, organic compounds and nitrogen oxides were very small and were in line with the Euro 6 requirements within a large margin. Correlation studies of the measured variables were conducted - between vehicle speed and exhaust emission rate as well as volumetric fuel consumption rates, and between exhaust emission rates and volumetric fuel consumption rates. The correlation studies have shown that the highest coefficient of determination in relation to vehicle speed was found for volumetric fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission rate, and the weakest correlation for carbon monoxide emission rate and nitrogen oxides emission rate. The correlation between the rate of volumetric fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission, as well as for hydrocarbon emission and methane emission rates, was found to be the strongest. The carbon monoxide emission rate was the least correlated with all the other measured variables. Dimensionless statistical characteristics of the measured variables were determined, such as: extreme values, range, mean value, median, standard deviation, kurtosis, skewness and coefficient of variation. For all of them, the mean value was much greater than the median, and the standard deviation was greater still, than both of those values. The numerical distributions for the values of exhaust emission rate and volumetric fuel consumption turned out to be leptokurtic and have right-sided asymmetry. The coefficient of variation analysis made it possible to assess that the most dynamic properties could be observed in organic compounds emission rate, followed by carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides emission rates, and finally - the vehicle speed. Histograms of the examined processes were determined. The vehicle speed histogram was characterized by relative uniformity apart from the dominance of the idle speed. Histograms of exhaust emission rate variables were most frequently dominated by small values. The zero values occurred less frequently for the fuel consumption volumetric rate histogram. Based on the conducted research and the obtained data, a set of conclusions was drawn.

Biodiesel is well known substitute fuel for combustion ignition engines. It can diminish the various harmful emissions like carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and particulate matter (PM) emissions; however it holds some draw back that includes increase in nitrogen oxides (NOX) emission as compared with diesel fuel. The present work demonstrates the comparative study of exhaust emissions of a 4-stroke naturally aspirated variable compression ratio compression ignition engine utilizing biodiesel made from linseed oil and sesame oil. Various results of exhaust emissions are obtained through exhaustive experiments at compression ratio 17 and 18. Study showed that the linseed oil displayed the improved emission results in HC emissions and CO emissions whereas blend of isopropyl alcohol and diethyl ether displayed the better emissions of CO2 and NOX and standard diesel as well.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono analizę rozkładu wymiarowego średnic cząstek stałych, emitowanych z turbinowego silnika lotniczego. Pomiary przeprowadzono w warunkach stacjonarnych symulując rzeczywiste warunki pracy silnika odrzutowego. W pierwszym okresie pracy silnika dominują cząstki stałe o średnicach 20–30 nm oraz średnicach dużych (rzędu 100–140 nm), a w kolejnych okresach pracy ustabilizowanej dominują cząstki o średnicach z zakresu 30–40 nm.
The article presents an analysis of the size distribution of particulate matters emitted from jet engine. Measurements were carried out in stationary conditions simulating real operating conditions of the jet engine. The study was performed for the three initial phases of engine operation: start-up, warm-up and steady-state operation. The obtained results allowed to determine the particulate matters size distribution of the most common particulates emitted under given conditions also the changes of characteristic diameters of particulate matters have been correlated with exhaust emission. As a result, the particulate matters size distributions were obtained on the basis of which it was found that diameters of particulates in the initial phase of engine operation are characterized by high variability. Th first period of engine operation is dominated by particles with diameters of 20–30 nm and bigger diameters (around 100–140 nm), and in next periods of engine operation particles are characterized by diameters in size range of 30–40 nm.

Opis:
The article concerns the use of an in-cylinder catalyst that allows reducing the exhaust emissions during diesel engine operation. This is an additional method of exhaust emission reduction - however, the active component is placed inside the combustion chamber - hence much closest to the combustion process. This allows reducing the emissions at the very source (catalyst applied on the glow plugs). Such solutions are necessary because the reduction of exhaust emissions from vehicles is a key aspect of reducing the negative impact of transport on the environment.

Opis:
The paper tackles the problems connected with the charge exchange in internal combustion engines. The theoretical analysis of the charge exchange process in the SI engine has been presented. A system with independent, early exhaust valve closing has been analysed. The analysed system enables realization of an internal EGR and elimination of a throttling valve from an inlet system and reduce the charge exchange work, especially within the range of partial load. The decrease of the charge exchange work leads to an increase of the internal and effective works, which results in an increase of the effective efficiency of the spark ignition engine. The open, theoretical cycle has been assumed as a model of processes proceeding in an engine. The system has been analysed individually and comparatively with open Seiliger-Sabathe cycle. Benefits resulting from application of the system with early exhaust valve closing have been assessed on the basis of the selected parameters: a fuel dose, a cycle work, a relative charge exchange work and a cycle efficiency. The best results within decrease of fuel consumption and increase of cycle efficiency are obtained for low engine load. The main parameters characterizing the process of the internal exhaust gas recirculation were also determined. These are the ratio and the multiplicity of the exhaust gas recirculation.
