Opis:
The paper covers the important topic of rotor–stator propulsor system design and operation. For the stand-alone marine screw propeller, both the design criteria for loading distribution and the theoretical efficiency limits are well described in the basic literature. This is in contrast to the combined propulsor system like a propeller cooperating with a pre-swirl device. The paper describes the current state of the art, summarising results obtained by various researchers by installing energy-saving devices on particular vessels. The design methods utilised are briefly outlined, with the main characteristics underlined. Rough analysis of the gathered data confirms the expected trend that a higher efficiency gain due to ESD installation is possible for a higher propeller loading.

The reduction of fuel cost has always been one of the key strategic business goals for ship owners and operators. In the current climate of high oil prices, the reduction of fuel costs becomes essential; and furthermore a variety of recent legislations require owners and operators to move towards the reduction of emissions from ships of SOx, NOx and CO. Hence the pressure on designers to achieve both reduced fuel costs and reduced emissions by optimising the hull and propeller has never been higher. In parallel to the performance improvement of new built vessels, there has been great interest in the potential to enhance the performance of existing vessels through retrofit of devices to the hull. In any case for instance the WED device must be customized to fit to the afterbody of the ship in terms of performing its supposed function. The Designer is therefore placed in the front of multiple geometric solutions from between he has to make a choice. This paper is intended to help the Designers to have a rational choosing approach by involving the numeric optimization of the geometry of the WED in order to select the best fitted WED to perform the best in order to achieve some predefined parameters. In this paperwork a given geometry of a WED device is taken and via Design Optimization the geometry of the duct was refined so that better results are achieved with a smaller and more compact WED. In doing so, the Designer is assisted by numeric optimization methods to choose from only three final candidates instead of several thousands in order to provide the best fitted WED geometry for a given ship afterbody.

Opis:
A detailed analysis of the influence of a glazed surface type with a diversified thermal transmittance on the energy balance of a detached house boasting the volume of 445.10 m3, was carried out on the basis of the Passive House Planning Program (PHPP). Average monthly transmission heat losses and solar gains by windows with five different U-Values were determined. A part of heat losses by windows in the total building energy balance was compared. It was pointed out, that the use of windows with thermal transmittance equals 0.80 W/(m2×K) enables to reduce transmission heat losses by 34% and to decrease the energy need for heating by circa 18% in comparison with the windows with thermal transmittance equals 1.20 W/(m2×K). The annual primary energy demand in this building was reduced by 2.9%. For all analyzed cases, the use of external solar shading devices contributes to reduction of the transmission heat losses and the energy demand ratio for the heating system. The solar control devices allowed to decrease of solar heat gains at the average by 41.3% during the months from May to September. The application of energy-saving windows with external solar shading devices influenced the increase of the building energy efficiency.
