Opis:
The energy efficient spectrum sensing method is very important in cognitive radio (CR), since high power drain may limit its implementation in mobile applications. The spectrum sensing feature consumes more energy than other functional blocks, as it depends on continuous detection of the presence or absence of the primary user (PU). In this paper, we proposed two methods to reduce energy consumption of the spectrum sensing feature. The first is of a single stage variety with a reduced number of sensed samples. The other uses two stages. The first stage performs coarse sensing for many subchannels, and the best subchannel is forwarded for fine sensing in the second stage. The performance of the proposed methods is evaluated in AWGN channel and compared with the existing approach. The proposed methods are simulated using Matlab and ModelSim and are then hardware implemented using the Altera Cyclone II FPGA board. Simulation results show that the proposed methods offer an improvement in energy consumption with an acceptable reduction in the probability of detection. At Eb/N0 Eb/N0 Eb/N0 of 0 dB, the energy consumption is reduced by 50% and 72% in the first and second proposed method, respectively, compared to the traditional method (100% sensing).

In cognitive radio technology, spectrum sensing is essential for detecting spectrum holes which may be allotted to secondary users. In this paper, an optimal voting rule is used for cooperative spectrum sensing while minimizing the total error rate (TER). The proposed spectrum sensing method is more energy-efficient and may be implemented in practice. It is relied upon in an improved energy detector whose utilization depends on the presence or absence of the primary user. Expressions for false alarm and missed detection probabilities are derived in the paper as well. Overall performance is analyzed both for AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The optimum voting rule is applied to the cooperative spectrum sensing process in order to identify the optimum number of sensing nodes and the detection threshold. Finally, an energy-efficient spectrum sensing algorithm is proposed, requiring a lower number of cognitive users for a given error bound.

Breast cancer remains one of the major causes of mortality among female cancer patients. This fact caused a spark in the medical field, which in turn helped to improve the diagnostic and treatment of breast cancer patients over the years making this field always active with new ideas and innovative methods. In our study, a new method was explored using an energy-resolving detection system made from a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector to detect the gamma photons from an Am-241 radiation source to try and construct an image by scanning the American College of Radiology (ACR) mammography phantom. In addition to the experimental work, a Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) toolkit was used to investigate more complex options to improve the image quality of mammographic systems, which is limited by the experimental setup. From the experimental setup, the researchers were able to construct an image using the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV energy photons, to show the largest size tumour (12 mm) in the ACR phantom. With an improved setup in the simulation environment, the majority of the ACR phantom tumours was visible using both energy windows from the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV, where the 26.3 keV yielded better quality images showing four tumours compared to three when using 59.5 keV. The simulation results were promising; however, several improvements need to be incorporated into the experimental work so that the system can generate high-resolution mammographic images similar to the ones obtained by the GATE simulation setup.

In this paper, the future Fifth Generation (5G New Radio) radio communication system has been considered, coexisting and sharing the spectrum with the incumbent Fourth Generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system. The 4G signal presence is detected in order to allow for opportunistic and dynamic spectrum access of 5G users. This detection is based on known sensing methods, such as energy detection, however, it uses machine learning in the domains of space, time and frequency for sensing quality improvement. Simulation results for the considered methods: k-Nearest Neighbor sand Random Forest show that these methods significantly improves the detection probability.

In this paper a dynamic spectrum access (DSA) concept is explored for mitigating the paucity of spectral bandwidth in cognitive radio (CR) for opportunistic, dynamic access of the spectrum without any interference. Dynamic spectrum access schemes are proposed for a distributed cognitive radio network consisting of one secondary user (SU) and many primary users (PUs). The SU has to make decisions for accessing PU channels within discrete time slots. The design of sensing and access strategies that govern channel choice in each slot for near-optimal throughput performance of the SU may be formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). Furthermore, it is considered that the SU incurs a cost whenever it switches to a different channel. The switching cost is expressed in terms of delay, packet loss and packet overhead. In this work, the SU access policy based on a myopic approach is proposed and evaluated.

LaBr3:Ce,CeBr3 and GAGG:Ce scintillators were investigated and the determined characteristics were compared with those obtained for the well-known and widely used CsI:Tl and NaI:Tl crystals. All the detectors were of the same size of 10 × 10 × 5 mm3. The aim of this test study was to single out scintillation detectors most suitable for γ-ray spectrometry and γ -ray emission radial profile measurements in high-temperature plasma experiments. Decay time, energy resolution, non-proportionality and full energy peak detection efficiency were measured for γ -ray energies up to 1770 keV. Due to their good energy resolution, short decay time and high detection efficiency for MeV gamma rays, LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3 scintillators are proposed as the best candidates for use especially under conditions of high count rates, which are expected in the forthcoming DT experiments.

Nowadays, non-contact measurement systems have found application in the Structural Health Monitoring of civil engineering structures for the detection, localization and assessment of damage. In the field of static deflection measurement, the vision based techniques have become more popular. The deflection curve obtained by image processing and analysis methods can be analyzed in order to detect and localize the change of the curvature, which implies the appearance of a crack. In this paper, the vision based deflection measurement system is discussed. The deflection of beam-like structures is computed by means of digital image correlation. The damage detection and localization is based on the irregularity detection by means of analyzing the deflection curve. A new approach and some selected methods for damage detection and localization will be highlighted and their results obtained in the laboratory setup will be presented and discussed.

Opis:
This article addresses the problem of fault detection in robot manipulator systems. In the production field, online detection and prevention of unexpected robot stops avoids disruption to the entire manufacturing line. A number of researchers have proposed fault diagnosis architectures for electrical systems such as induction motor, DC motor, etc..., utilising the technique of discrete wavelet transform. The results obtained from the use of this technique in the field of diagnosis are very encouraging. Inspired by previous work, The objective of this paper is to present a methodology that enables accurate fault detection in the actuator of a two-degree of freedom robot arm to avoid system performance degradation. A partial reduction in joint torque constitutes the actuator fault, resulting in a deviation from the desired end-effector motion. The actuator fault detection is carried out by analysing the torques signals using the wavelet transform. The stored energy at each level of the transform contains information which can be used as a fault indicator. A Matlab/Simulink simulation of the manipulator robot demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Opis:
Purpose: Knowledge management belongs to the most important elements of organisational management, including manufacturing enterprises. Patent information plays an increasingly important role in this area. Identification of the main directions of invention activity may inspire new product and process ideas, and can help to improve existing solutions. The above is particularly important in the energy sector, which is currently struggling with increasing problems. In this context, solar energy is the subject of interest to inventive communities. The paper discusses patent applications related to solar energy, taking up the task of discovering the main tendencies of technological solutions in this area. Design/methodology/approach: In the work, a pilot study of the research aimed to indicate the directions of technological development in the field in Poland was undertaken. Shortened descriptions of selected patent documents from the Polish Patent Office (PPO) were the subject of the investigation. The descriptions were reduced to the form of a vector space model by using text mining tools. The exploration of such prepared data was done applying unsupervised text mining techniques. Hierarchical cluster analysis enabled the identification of groups of similar inventions. An algorithm to detect outliers within individual patent groups was also developed and applied. Findings: Five patent clusters were identified covering the following thematic areas: PV panel designs, PV panel component designs, the improvement of solar-heat conversion device performance, and solar collector designs. Six patent applications stood out thematically in four of the five clusters. Research limitations/implications: The research is limited to a selected number of patent documents form PPO. However, the presented method and research area are promising. It is planned to extend the analyses to a larger set of patent documents and solve the problem related to the language uniformity of patent applications along with merging data from various sources. In this aspect, a full patent description will be consider as well. Originality/value: In relation to solar energy issues, main patent areas and patent outliers that may be indicators of special interests of inventors were identified. In relation to methodology issues, new solutions within consecutive research steps were proposed.

Parametry zaprojektowanego układu: niskim poziom rozpraszanej mocy P=3,2 mW, niski poziom szumów własnych ENC=586 e- rms (dla „wolnej” ścieżki i Cdet=30 pF), a powierzchnia krzemu zajmowana przez pojedynczy kanał wynosi 50 μm × 1100 μm.
This work presents the design of the readout front-end electronics for time and energy measurements dedicated for double-sided strip detectors implemented in submicron technology UMC 180 nm CMOS. The simultaneous and accurate measurements of time and energy deposited in the detector by a photon requires the use of two different parallel processing paths in the single channel: fast and slow. The designed front-end electronics is characterized by low power dissipation level P=3.2 mW, low noise performance ENC=586 e- rms (for “slow” path and at Cdet=30 pF). The single channel occupies silicon chip area of 50 μm × 1100 μm.
