Opis:
The paper examines emotional communities in early modern English drama, specifically interludes by John Heywood and John Bale. It explores the connections between emotion and religion, and seeks to uncover whether and how emotionality changes according to the politically acceptable religious doctrine – particularly in the time of Protestant reformation under Henry VIII Tudor – and how these changes are expressed in the early sixteenth century English interludes by a Catholic (Heywood) and a Protestant (Bale) author. This paper considers early modern texts of culture which have not been researched as broadly as the drama of the later English Renaissance period (such as works by William Shakespeare or Christopher Marlowe), and, drawing upon the concept of “emotional communities” introduced by Barbara Rosenwein, additionally offers insights into an ongoing discussion on emotions in history.

emotional communities
historical discourse versus literary discourse
Opis:
Isabel Burdiel (2015) points out that since the realism of the 19th century – the genre which inspired Almudena Grandes for her ambitious narrative project Episodios de una guerra interminable – there has been a constant exchange of narrative goals, interests and strategies between historic and novelistic discourse. Our aim within the present paper it is to ask ourselves about the significance of the cultural representations of emotions within her literary discourse, in this case, linked to the concept of community, as well as the implications that such a confluence has within the fictional recreation of some aspects of Spain’s recent past, taking Inés y la alegría as an example. If it is true, as some historians state, that the rules that regulate emotions constitute social differences, and therefore, are a key aspect for explaining historical change, it seems that some of the time, works of fiction try to explain complex historical processes based on, not only individual, but also collective, emotional changes. According to Grandes’s social worldview, an individual’s sense of fulfilment only seems possible within the framework of a community that provides support and solidarity networks. In this sense, we can link her novel in an indirect way with the emergence during recent years – as Jo Labanyi (2016) states – of “communal options that reject market-oriented logic. A pattern of thought which prioritizes the relation and not the individual”.

Opis:
This paper aims to analyse the courtly love of the troubadours with a particular focus on the relationship between joi and fear or disquiet. With the background of previous concepts, the model of fin’amor as an emotional community with its basic characteristics is presented. On the example of selected texts from the courtly literature, a “map of emotions” of the troubadour world, in which joi plays a central role, is constructed. Joi is defined as “joy acting” or “a state of harmony, ecstasy and inner perfection”. As the etymology of this concept, it is taken as a combination of the words gaudium (joy) and joculum (play). The analysis indicates that the pursuit of joi is both the reason for building the emotional community of fin’amor and the goal of its actors involved. The achievement of joi is based on an elaborate system of literary games. In the emotional community, joi triggers other emotions, including fear and disquiet. Thus, joi is not a state of inner harmony but an ambivalent entity, affecting both the well-being of the individual fin’amor actors and the lack thereof.
