This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

This essay is a case study about linguistic mechanisms that affect an emigrant’s life. The research is based onthe autobiography by the Polish emigrant Eva Hoffman, analyzed with the use of theories She communicates poorly because the of new language corresponds with different from the native language, creating another IRUP. Nowadays in Polish-speaking pastoral centers often three generations gather on the Sunday Mass. This situation puts the chaplain in specific language challenges, including the use of local language in contacts with children and the youth. The way of communicating the truths of faith, liturgical singing and the preservation of customs must also be adapted to such a diverse audience.

Celem zapewnienie stałej opieki duszpasterskiej w poszczególnych krajach, opiera się ono na współpracy zainteresowanych Konferencji Biskupów, rektorów Polskojęzycznych Misji Katolickich. Współpraca ta aktualizowana jest przez wskazaniami Soboru Watykańskiego II i posoborowe dokumenty Stolicy Apostolskiej. Praca duszpasterska na rzecz polskich emigrantów koordynowana jest przez rektora, który dzisiaj nazywany jest koordynatorem narodowym duszpasterzy języka polskiego. W krajach, w których nie ma rektora polskojęzyczne duszpasterstwo opiera się na strukturach wypracowanych w bilateralnych porozumieniach pomiędzy zainteresowanymi biskupami lub pomiędzy biskupami a wyższymi przełożonymi instytutów życia konsekrowanego.

Tsvetaeva spent seventeen years in exile and could not avoid the topic of nostalgia. However, her solution of the theme is polemical against the dominant tendencies in emigrant literature. Instead of aspiration to return to a concrete place, to the unchangeable organization of life (prerevolutionary Russia), she forges baroque-romantic type of nostalgia as a desire for eternal movement following a mobile target (after Charles Baudelaire).

In the article, works of Roman Gul - a writer, a literary critic, a historian and memuaristof the first wave of the Russian emigration are examined. His literary work in Poland is littleknownand examined. As the research material there are two drafts about F. Dzerzyhinsky and V.Menzhinsky, Poles, noblemen. Gul, showing main stages of the life and revolutionary activityof Dzerzhinsky (“red executioner”, “father of terror”) is focusing his attention on portrait andpsychological characteristics this fanatic, author of Bolshevik terror. The author of sketches iscomparing “the lion of the revolution” with the Tomas de Torquemada Inquisitor and with activistsof the Great French Revolution Isidore de Robespierre and Antoine Quentin Fouquier deTinville. Convincingly and accurately he is reconstructing the portrait of Menzhinsky. He is alsocreating characteristics of intellectual and spiritual mediocrity.

Others – the creations of Polish female emigrants The article Others – the creations of Polish female emigrants in Danuta Mostwin’s novels concerns the identity of Polish female immigrants in Danuta Mostwin’s novels. The article aims to present the functioning of the Others category in Mostwin’s novels, describing the experience of Polish female immigrants in the United States. The visibility of strangeness or exclusion, influencing the construction of the identity of emigrant women, has been noticed in the novels: Nie ma domu, Dom starej lady, Ameryko!Ameryko!, Odchodzą moi synowie, Ja za wodą, ty za wodą and collections of stories: Asteroidy i Ptaki. The category of the Others is related to the following phenomena: broadly defined otherness towards autochthons and oneself, and the possibility of building an identity based on a constructive combination of Polish values and those present in the culture of the country of immigration.

Autorzy w artykule analizują wpływ migracji zarobkowej na trwałość rodziny na Litwie. Wyrażenie „migracja” oznacza wyjazd do innego kraju z zamiarem pozostania w nim na stałe lub nie krócej niż 12 miesięcy. Międzynarodowa Organizacja Migracji podaje, że w 2014 r. na Litwie 36,6 tys. osób zadeklarowało wyjazd z kraju, natomiast w 2015 r. – 38 tys. osób. Ludzie migrują ze względów ekonomicznych, braku zabezpieczenia społecznego, braku zaufania do państwa, poniżających postaw pracodawców względem pracowników oraz lepszych możliwości pracy za granicą.
The Authors in the article analyze the influence of labour migration on the stability of family in Lithuania. The word “emigration” means the departure to another country with an intention to reside in it permanently or no shorter than 12 months. The International Organization for Migration notes that in Lithuania 36.6 thousand people declared their departure in 2014 and 38 thousand people in 2015. People emigrate due to economic reasons, lack of social security, no trust in the state, demeaning attitude of employers toward employees and better work opportunities abroad.

W tekście podjęta została próba odczytania ewolucji stanowiska europejskiej opinii publicznej wobec uchodźców jako wyrazu narastających problemów wewnętrznych samej Europy. Ukazuje ona kompromitację tradycyjnej, opartej na współczuciu, etyki Zygmunta Baumana i Alaina Finkelkrauta oraz ujawnia deficyt myślenia w kategoriach etyki odpowiedzialności globalnej rozwijanej po drugiej wojnie światowej, ale zwalczanej przez konserwatywny intelektualny establishment.
The paper provides an attempt to elucidate the evolution of the European public’s position towards refugees as a manifestation of growing internal problems of Europe itself. It shows a fiasco of the traditional, compassion based ethics of Zygmunt Bauman and Alan Finkelkraut as well as it reveals the deficits of thinking in categories of ethics of global responsibility developed after the Second World War but fought by the conservative intellectual establishment.

The aim of this article is to examine the political ideas of Milovan Djilas (1911–1995) developed in his dissident period (1954–1989). Once a highly ranked communist and revolutionary of Tito’s antifascist partisan army in the Second World War Yugoslavia, Milovan Djilas (1911–1995) became widely known as one of the most important dissident figures in Eastern Europe. A noted reformist since Tito-Stalin split in 1948 and political prisoner (1956–1961, 1962–1966), Djilas was deprived from all public activity in his country until the end of communist rule. Author of more than twenty books translated and published abroad, ranging from political analysis and memoirs to novels and shorts stories, Djilas never truly gave up the ideals of the young talented writer he was in the early 1930s when he joined the communists. Declaring himself a democratic socialist, it was in his dissident period that he formulated a specific form of political philosophy which included his criticism of communist ideology and Titoist authoritarian rule in Yugoslavia, but also wider thoughts on human condition, literature and philosophy in the 20th century.

The article discusses a polemic that in 1961 developed in the Polish emigrant press appearing in London; it concerned the book entitled Millennium. A Thousand Years of Polish History, issued in Poland in several languages. Most objections were aroused by the presentation of Polish-Russian relations over the ages (especially in the 20th century). Three authors of the synthesis were accused of downright servility and national renegation. Marian Kukiel, an émigré authority on the history of modern Poland, defended their case. Pointing out the specific conditions and the constant pressure of censorship under which Polish historiography had to develop, he appraised highly the achievements of those researchers. However, he failed to convince a majority of the readers of the Polish emigrant press, as is testified by their letters in which they expressed their indignation.

The article examines moral responsibility as a specific subjective-objective phenomenon of oral folk art using the example of folklore non-ritual lyric-epic texts. It is analyzed the conceptual dilemma of responsibility – irresponsibility and its role in implementing the functions of oral traditional culture. The authors focus on the correlation between the concepts of individual and social responsibility. In addition, the problem of social responsibility as an evident form of the relations between the individual and society driven by the need to comply with coexistence rules is actualized. Folk consciousness accumulates knowledge about responsibility as one of the forms of social relations, which objectively exists, is reflected in the psychological and spiritual aspects, and hence is an internal (towards oneself) and external (towards the community and humanity as a whole) manifestation of responsibility. Essential characteristics and forms of textualization of moral responsibility in folk songs are outlined: every time a practical act is compared with a proper one in real life, i.e., a moral ideal, through the reflection of the characters of a folklore work and the manifestation of behavior in a particular life situation. It is established that morality in oral literature appears simultaneously as a regulatory structure and a system of meanings of the subject and society as a whole. The imperativeness inherent in the belief system of a traditional work becomes not only a statement of a particular position but also a request for understanding the idea of life purpose at the author-audience level. The tragic event reinterpreted by folk consciousness transfers the axiological content of the depicted act to the collective memory. The essence of the responsibility–irresponsibility dilemma unfolds through a specific human reality. The analysis of non-ritual lyric-epic songs highlights a crucial axiom: moral responsibility is, first of all, the affirmation of the view of life, beliefs, and principles of a person who perceives these moments as own, imagined, and suffered. Having separated temptations of the empirical world, the essential from the insignificant, a person isolates the dominant landmarks of their existence, often leveling out the possibility of personal happiness, acting for the benefit of others. A folklore work conceives the relevance of individual and social consciousness since the depicted folk event raises the current problem to the level of collective comprehension, highlighting the imperative of human life value.

The present arcticle, which was written for the International Panopticum Conference in Brussels in 2009, discusses the way Marian Pankowski’s literary language, or his motherland of word, functions in the sphere between homeland and European space. The title Smagła swoboda, which expresses the author-emigrant’s strive to keep his Sanok imagination in touch with European culture and languages, has become the metaphor for the considerations. The aim of the innovative Sanok-European fusion in Pankowski’s dicourse is creating an independent writing code as well as identity. The rich reservoir of topics used by the author, e.g., ‘auschwitz’ trauma, private patriotism as well as persisting with Polishness and spiritual bond with the mother, was submerged in multifarious and sensual European reality described with the aura of irony and grotesque.

In the circles of Belarusian emigrants in Germany in the second half of 1940s were formed two political groups aspiring to become the political representation in the West. The first one was related with the Council of the Belarusian Democratic Republic (BRL), reactivated in 1947 and headed by Mikola Abramchyk. Those emigrants who didn’t share their ideas with the President Abramchyk gathered around the The Belarusian Central Rada (BRC), headed by Radoslav Ostrovsky. These two political groups had their own followers and enjoyed their confidence. Despite the differences as to how to justify their power or establish the borders of the reborn state, both political representations of Belarusian emigration were expressing their enthusiasm for the restitution of the independent Belarusian state as the Belarusian People’s Republic. There was consensus on denying the Soviet Belarus as a form of Belarusian statehood.
