Opis:
Dutch elm disease (DED) still occurs in Poland. Previous studies confirmed occurring O. ulmi and two subspecies of O. novo-ulmi: subsp. novo-ulmi and subsp. amerciana. In this study the population of Ophiostoma occurred in Poland was investigated. The disease incidence was investigated on elms growing in 39 locations. The pathogen’s mycelium was isolated from elm branches and twigs collected from 22 plots. The disease symptoms were noted in 5% to 35% trees. Fungi were identified based on the PCR amplification of the ITS 1/2 rDNA together with phylogenetic analysis of this region. Ophiostoma novo-ulmi was the only agent caused DED on Ulmus glabra, U. minor and U. laevis. There were no genetic diversity of O. novo-ulmi Polish population in analyzed ITS region. All kind of specific symptoms and disease intensity occurred independently on elm species and host age. Ulmus minor was infested most sever among the three elms species.

Opis:
Three elm species are native to Poland: wych elm (Scots elm) (Ulmus glabra Huds.), field elm (U. minor Mill.), and European white elm (fluttering elm) (U. laevis Pall.). The epidemic of Dutch elm disease (DED) has led to a decrease in the popularity of elm cultivation. An analysis of forestry data was the first step in the assessment of elm resources. The area of forest stands where elms are dominant has more than doubled since 1978. Lowland alluvial forests rank first in regards to the number of elm localities per unit area of a given forest site type. While this site type is clearly preferred by elms, the majority of elm trees are actually scattered among sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests (of the alliance Carpinion betuli). Field research revealed a clear dominance of U. laevis, a species which in the past was predominantly located out of woodland and rarely cultivated. Data analysis indicated that all trees greater than 70 cm in diameter belonged to this species. Data from plots surveyed directly also suggest that the three elm species have slightly different habitat preferences. U. laevis prefers riparian habitats, although the major part of its resources is now on potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests. U. minor even more often than U. laevis occurs at less humid sites (mostly potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests), while U. glabra prefers moist slopes. In general, it appears that the impact of DED in the last 20–30 years has been smaller than in the preceding period, however, the disappearance of the disease has not been established. Undoubtedly, U. laevis is the elm species that is least impacted by DED

The effect of monoterpenoid 1,8-cineol on the toxicity and physiology of elm leaf beetle, Xanthogaleruca luteola Müller under laboratory conditions (26 ± 1°C, 65 ± 10% RH and 16L : 8D h) was investigated. Initially, LC30 and LC50 values of the constituent were estimated to be 23.5 ppm and 31.9 ppm for the last instar larvae after 48 h, respectively. Significant changes were observed in the values of relative growth rate (RGR), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), approximate digestibility (AD) and consumption index (CI) between control and treated larvae with 1,8-cineol. The amounts of protein, glucose and urea decreased in the treated larvae in comparison with control. Similar findings were observed in the activities of alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase while the activities of glutathione S-transferase and esterase significantly increased in the treated larvae using CDNB and α-naphtyl acetates as the substrates. Morphological and histological changes brought about by 1,8-cineol in the present study are indicative of growth inhibition targeting specific organs such as those of reproduction. We believe that 1,8-cineol can be considered as a safe and environmentally friendly compound.

Opis:
During the last century almost two-thirds of all elms were lost due to the Dutch elm disease. Therefore, elms are an endangered species with a lasting lack of knowledge about ecosystem functions of elms in forest stands. The study describes several above- and below-ground tree parameters and their changes after simulation of thinning in one young forest stand with dominant Ulmus laevis Pall. in the Czech Republic. The distribution of the leaves was measured using the ‘cloud’ technique. The absorptive root area was measured with the aid of the modified earth impedance method to evaluate below-ground tree parameters. Using allometric equations, it was possible to calculate certain tree parameters of individual trees as well as the entire forest stand. The modelling of four thinning intensities (low, medium, high and very high) helped to establish the changes of these tree parameters after treatment. The leaf area index of the stand was 5.6, the absorptive root area index was 1.7 and the total biomass of foliage was 8.5 Mg ha–1 prior to the treatment. The absorptive root area amounted to 30% of the foliage area. The exponential models were developed to predict the above- and below-ground tree parameters. Under the different thinning intensities, the following were found: a negative correlation with the number of trees for the leaf area index, the foliage biomass and the absorptive root area index. This knowledge is important in the process of maintaining the presence of endangered elms in forest stands and in ecosystem services (e.g. carbon storage) throughout Europe.

Opis:
Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) has garnered much attention, for its simple operation and high selectivity for the target solute. For an ELM process to be successful, emulsion stability and formulation of liquid membrane are the two main criteria. This study investigated an ELM formulation to identify a suitable green surfactant over the ordinary ones to reduce the utilization of chemicals. The stability of water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) was assessed in the following ways, by altering the concentrations of the egg yolk and NaOH, homogenizer speed, and emulsification time. To ascertain the favorable conditions for phenol extraction, several experiments were performed, adopting the batch process, which included many parameters, like the influence exerted by the pH of the external feed, concentration of surfactant, concentration of the internal phase, time of emulsification, homogenization speed and mixing time. Lower breakage and greater extraction efficiency (0.83% and 82.06%, respectively) were attained at 3.5 pH of the external feed, 4% (v/v) of the surfactant, 0.1 M of NaOH, 7 min of emulsification time, 5800 rpm of homogenizer speed and 3 minutes of mixing time. From the results of this study, egg yolk emerged as a good green surfactant. Thus, the ELM process holds promise as an effective technology for stripping phenol from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
Fluctuation of groundwater levels around the world is an important theme in hydrological research. Rising water demand, faulty irrigation practices, mismanagement of soil and uncontrolled exploitation of aquifers are some of the reasons why groundwater levels are fluctuating. In order to effectively manage groundwater resources, it is important to have accurate readings and forecasts of groundwater levels. Due to the uncertain and complex nature of groundwater systems, the development of soft computing techniques (data-driven models) in the field of hydrology has significant potential. This study employs two soft computing techniques, namely, extreme learning machine (ELM) and support vector machine (SVM) to forecast groundwater levels at two observation wells located in Canada. A monthly data set of eight years from 2006 to 2014 consisting of both hydrological and meteorological parameters (rainfall, temperature, evapotranspiration and groundwater level) was used for the comparative study of the models. These variables were used in various combinations for univariate and multivariate analysis of the models. The study demonstrates that the proposed ELM model has better forecasting ability compared to the SVM model for monthly groundwater level forecasting.
Na całym świecie fluktuacje poziomów wód gruntowych stanowią ważny temat badań hydrologicznych. Rosnące potrzeby wodne, błędne praktyki irygacyjne, niewłaściwa gospodarka glebowa i niekontrolowana eksploatacja poziomów wodonośnych są powodami, dla których poziom wód gruntowych podlega fluktuacjom. Dla skutecznego zarządzania zasobami wód gruntowych istotne jest dysponowanie dokładnymi zapiskami i zdolność prognozowania poziomu tych wód. Rozwój technik komputerowych (modele wykorzystujące dane) w dziedzinie hydrologii ma istotny potencjał z powodu niepewnego i złożonego charakteru systemów wód gruntowych. W prezentowanych badaniach wykorzystano dwie techniki komputerowe: maszynę uczenia ekstremalnego (ELM) i maszynę wektorów nośnych (SVM – ang. support vector machine) do przewidywania poziomów wód gruntowych w dwóch studzienkach obserwacyjnych w Kanadzie. Do porównawczych badań modeli wykorzystano zestaw danych miesięcznych z ośmiu lat (2006–2014), składający się z danych hydrologicznych i meteorologicznych (opady, temperatura, ewapotranspiracja, poziom wody). Wymienione zmienne zastosowano w rozmaitych kombinacjach do jedno- i wieloparametrycznej analizy modeli. Wyniki dowodzą, że model ELM ma lepsze zdolności przewidywania miesięcznych poziomów wód gruntowych w porównaniu z modelem SVM.

A transformer is an important part of power transmission and transformation equipment. Once a fault occurs, it may cause a large-scale power outage. The safety of the transformer is related to the safe and stable operation of the power system. Aiming at the problem that the diagnosis result of transformer fault diagnosis method is not ideal and the model is unstable, a transformer fault diagnosis model based on improved particle swarm optimization online sequence extreme learning machine (IPSO-OS-ELM) algorithm is proposed. The improved particle swarmoptimization algorithm is applied to the transformer fault diagnosis model based on the OS-ELM, and the problems of randomly selecting parameters in the hidden layer of the OS-ELM and its network output not stable enough, are solved by optimization. Finally, the effectiveness of the improved fault diagnosis model in improving the accuracy is verified by simulation experiments.

Opis:
Due to the complex geology of vein deposits and their erratic grade distributions, there is the tendency of overestimating or underestimating the ore grade. These estimated grade results determine the profitability of mining the ore deposit or otherwise. In this study, five Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) variants based on hard limit, sigmoid, triangular basis, sine and radial basis activation functions were applied to predict ore grade. The motive is that the activation function has been identified to play a key role in achieving optimum ELM performance. Therefore, assessing the extent of influence the activation functions will have on the final outputs from the ELM has some scientific value worth investigating. This study therefore applied ELMas ore grade estimator which is yet to be explored in the literature. The obtained results from the five ELM variants were analysed and compared with the state-of-the-art benchmark methods of Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Ordinary Kriging (OK). The statistical test results revealed that the ELM with sigmoid activation function (ELM-Sigmoid) was the best among all the other investigated methods (ELM-Hard limit, ELM-Triangular basis, ELM-Sine, ELM-Radial Basis, BPNN and OK). This is because the ELM-sigmoid produced the lowest MAE (0.0175), MSE (0.0005) and RMSE (0.0229) with highest R2 (91.93%) and R (95.88%) respectively. It was concluded that ELM-Sigmoid can be used by field practitioners as a reliable alternative ore grade estimation technique.

Opis:
Field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) is distributed mainly across central and southern Europe. In Poland this species occurs in the lowlands and foothills, where it grows mainly in the floodplain forests along the rivers. U. minor exists in a variety of climatic and ecological conditions. It is capable to tolerate floods as well as drought. Currently, most populations of U. minor are small and fragmented resulting from human activity and Dutch elm disease. Moreover, in the natural field elm populations, vegetative propagation by root suckers or sprouting can be observed. All these factors may affect the level of genetic variation of U. minor populations in Poland. In the present study, we determined the level of genetic variation and the clonal diversity of twelve natural U. minor populations in Poland (407 individuals) using eight nuclear microsatellite loci. The obtained results indicate that the studied field elm populations are characterized by low level of genetic variation (He=0.382; Ho=0.555; A=7.0). Additionally, the high level of clonality in field elm populations was estimated. The clonality level of examined elm populations varied among them, and in some cases was very high. Out of the 407 individuals analysed for clonal structure only 61 multilocus genotypes were identified. Furthermore, only one genotype was identified in the three study populations of field elm, which means that in each of these populations all trees belong to one genet. The values of genotypic richness (R) were heterogeneous among populations, with mean 0.148. The knowledge on the genetic diversity and the clonal structure of U. minor populations is essential to make future decisions regarding conservation of genetic resources of this species in Poland.

Opis:
Recurrent neural networks (RNN) have been successfully applied to various sequential decision-making tasks, natural language processing applications, and time-series predictions. Such networks are usually trained through back-propagation through time (BPTT) which is prohibitively expensive, especially when the length of the time dependencies and the number of hidden neurons increase. To reduce the training time, extreme learning machines (ELMs) have been recently applied to RNN training, reaching a 99% speedup on some applications. Due to its non-iterative nature, ELM training, when parallelized, has the potential to reach higher speedups than BPTT. In this work, we present Opt-PR-ELM, an optimized parallel RNN training algorithm based on ELM that takes advantage of the GPU shared memory and of parallel QR factorization algorithms to efficiently reach optimal solutions. The theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented on six RNN architectures, including LSTM and GRU, and its performance is empirically tested on ten time-series prediction applications. Opt- PR-ELM is shown to reach up to 461 times speedup over its sequential counterpart and to require up to 20x less time to train than parallel BPTT. Such high speedups over new generation CPUs are extremely crucial in real-time applications and IoT environments.

Opis:
Wych elm (Ulmus glabra Huds.) is a rare scattered forest tree species in Poland. First studies on genetic diversity of the species in its natural range in Poland give a good basis for the management and conservation of its genetic resources. In the present study, we determined the level of genetic variation and genetic differentiation of seventeen natural Wych elm populations in Poland using nine nuclear microsatellite loci. The number of analyzed individuals was 601. The level of genetic diversity of Polish populations of Wych elm corresponded with the results of the previous studies on this species in Europe. The populations show quite low level of genetic diversity of the species on the population level and quite high diversity on the interpopulation level. A total of 119 alleles was found, with average number per locus (A) equal 6.0 and allelic richness at medium high level (AR10=4.7). Observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity reached 0.583 and 0.602 respectively. The genetic differentiation between Polish populations of Wych elm occurred at a low level (Fst=0.089). Inbreeding depression may occur in the next generations (Fis=0.031). Genetic diversity between Wych elm populations in Poland may be the result of unfavorable random processes related to the reduction of population size resulting from elm disease. To better understand the processes related to the genetic diversity of Wych elm populations, research on field elm variation should be undertaken. Such studies may give an answer to the potential influence of introgression between these species on the genetic structure of the Wych elm. Both in situ as well as ex situ conservation measures are highly recommended to preserve genetic resources of this valuable noble hardwood species in Polish landscape.
