Opis:
The article is devoted to widely discussed issue massification of education at the university level after the political transformation of the late eighties of the last century. The work refers to the research interests of Ryszard Borowicz (sociologist and pedagogue), and was inspired by his statements regarding this phenomenon at the turn of the second and third millennium and its consequences, which have had an impact on the quality of education in Poland. The author is discussing with Professor Borowicz in 5 sections. In the first chapter the issue of massification of studies as a mass phenomenon was discussed, the observations were made in relation to understanding the enrollment rates of net and gross. It turns out that this is not the only way of understanding the massification, therefore, in the second section discusses the two different meanings of the term “massification of education” among others massification as a process of equalizing educational opportunities as a kind of social norm, and even a kind of fashion. The third section discusses the consequences of massification, associated with the impact of the phenomenon on elite universities, understood as eritocratic way preferred by R. Borowicz. The fourth section discusses other than the Borowicz suggests understanding elitist university - based on high-quality educational programs. The last section discusses the concept of the hidden program and its positive impact on the quality of modern education in universities.

Opis:
The article aims to describe the changes that have taken place in access to higher education over the years. The author began her reflections from ancient times, when higher education was initiated, and ends in modern times, characterized by mass education at a higher level. The article points out that the university and higher education system has undergone many transformations over the centuries, and elite studies have evolved into egalitarian ones. The phenomenon of parentocracy, which is more and more common in the current conditions of general education in higher schools, is also discussed.

Opis:
Using the Atti della Nazione Polacca at the University of Padua as a main source, the author describes the role that this university played in the education of students from the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth from the 16th to 18th centuries. According to the author’s research, this role was crucial in the 16th century, when a significant part of Polish elites included a stay at this university in their curriculum. In the 17th century, the number of students from Poland-Lithuania studying in Padua decreased slowly but continuously, and in the 18th century, the number was marginal. In the period under discussion, the social structure of this group significantly changed: students looking to acquire knowledge that was necessary for their future professional career were gradually replaced by young men of aristocratic and noble families, for whom a visit in Padua, be it long or short, was only a stage in their educational European Grand Tour. According to the author, this can be explained by intellectual changes in Polish-Lithuanian society: a general and rather superficial education was gradually preferred to university-based and professionally-provided knowledge. A study of selected travel diaries supplemented and confirmed the results of the presented statistical analysis. All Polish travellers visiting Padua in the 16th and 17th centuries described the University and considered it as the most important institution of the city; meetings with compatriot students were also often mentioned. Later on, the University was no longer the obvious subject of the descriptions and 18th-century travellers often did not even mention it at all. Nevertheless, there is still available evidence that the Polish presence in Padua, although reduced, was visible and important for the city.

Opis:
The departure point for the author’s reflections is Agata Zysiak’s book entitled Punkty za pochodzenie. Powojenna modernizacja i uniwersytet w robotniczym mieście [Points for Class Origin: Post-War Modernization and the University in a Working-Class City] (2016). He develops his earlier ideas on the role of the intelligentsia in Poland’s social hierarchy, particularly in connection with the world elite, which, after Bourdieu, he calls the “field of power.” Zysiak’s analyses provide him with arguments for the statement that the period of the Polish People’s Republic can be treated, in multiple dimensions, as having strengthened the position of the intelligentsia and especially of selected milieus within it. Zysiak’s proposed description of the “university in a workers’ city” produces a picture of the triumph of the intelligentsia-elite, whom the new institution of higher learning effectively forms into a successive tool for the strengthening of its privileged status. It also, in the author’s opinion, a factor in the failure of the “new bourgeoisie,” that is, the parts of the middle class that after the periods of modernization reforms had large hopes of maintaining both their status and financial privileges. At the same time, in opposition to the traditional intelligentsia, the new bourgeoisie overlooked the classic distinction games of the elite and believed in the compensatory strength of the manifestation their — usually recently — acquired material resources. The author also reflects on the current picture of Polish scholarship.
