Opis:
Museums have been closely linked to national identity since the 19th century. Currently, museums have to cope with the ways they present themselves to visitors properly. Therefore, national identity in a museum has become the centre of research attention. Children are a large group of visitors who come into contact with the national narrative in museums. Involving children in the research of the concept of national identity constructed in the museum can bring many interesting findings. However, research with children is difficult. Especially for beginning researchers or museum staff, who do not have in-depth experience with qualitative research. Thus, the aim of the study is to present possible ways of researching national identity with children. Attention will be drawn to the discussion of which variables and which data collection techniques are possible to examine national identity and it’s concept with children.

Opis:
Managing the exploitation of technical equipment under conditions of uncertainty requires the use of probabilistic prediction models in the form of probability distributions of the lifetime of these objects. The parameters of these distributions are estimated with the use of statistical methods based on historical data about actual realizations of the lifetime of examined objects. However, when completely new solutions are introduced into service, such data are not available and the only possible method for the initial assessment of the expected lifetime of technical objects is expert methods. The aim of the study is to present a method for estimating the probability distribution of the lifetime for new technical facilities based on expert assessments of three parameters characterizing the expected lifetime of these objects. The method is based on a subjective Bayesian approach to the problem of randomness and integrated with models of classical probability theory. Due to its wide application in the field of maintenance of machinery and technical equipment, a Weibull model is proposed, and its possible practical applications are shown. A new method of expert elicitation of probabilities for any continuous random variable is developed. A general procedure for the application of this method is proposed and the individual steps of its implementation are discussed, as well as the mathematical models necessary for the estimation of the parameters of the probability distribution are presented. A practical example of the application of the developed method on specific numerical values is also presented.

Patricia Highsmith’s stated reason for writing The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) was to see if she could elicit empathetic engagement for her immoral protagonist Tom Ripley. Amongst other factors, she achieves her goal by allowing readers to align affectively with the protagonist’s road to self-discovery. Her experiment culminates with Tom’s fruition into an aggressive consumer, thus resolving his and the readers’ apprehensions. On the other hand, Anthony Minghella’s Ripley leaves more room for interpretation. In his interviews, the filmmaker states that he does not aim for his protagonist to remain the sociopath from Highsmith’s novel. Instead, his story explores the absence of a father figure and how it affects his main characters. Consequently, he frames Tom as an underprivileged youth whose emotional instability brings about his demise. To this end, he employs victimization scenes, as well as moral disengagement cues. I argue that, amongst other factors, such an application of an industry-tested design of emphatic concern elicitation obscures the filmmaker’s initial intent. As a result, Minghella’s Tom can be seen as a manipulative sociopath, as well as a victimized tragic hero.

Opis:
This paper aims to examine the relationship between the Means-End Chain (MEC) theory and self-concept based on the Typology of Consumer Value through a hybrid elicitation technique. The contribution of this study is its sequential exploratory strategy of mixed-method design. The data were obtained from eighteen highly involved participants in Focus-Group (FG) discussions through the hybrid elicitation technique. First, a hierarchical value map is constructed using LadderUX software based on the responses. Second, a quantitative analysis with the help of RStudio software is conducted. Finally, an agglomerated matrix revealing the interconnections between self-concept and MEC is presented. The study provides evidence for a relationship between MEC and self-concept and redesigns the existing MEC approach's interpretation. This paper's originality lies in enlarging MEC theory's latitude by integrating self concept as a micro-component. Thus, the MEC model becomes enhanced with individualism, symbolism, and experiential aspects. This approach provides a new consumer-centric perspective on existing MEC and opens new avenues for further research.
Celem artykułu jest zbadanie związku pomiędzy teorią łańcuchów środków-celów a koncepcją self opartą na typologii wartości konsumenckiej za pomocą hybrydowej techniki gromadzenia danych. W badaniu wykorzystano sekwencyjne, eksploracyjne podejście badań mieszanych. Dane uzyskano w drodze zastosowania zogniskowanego wywiadu grupowego od osiemnastu zaangażowanych użytkowników smartfonów. W pierwszym etapie wyodrębniono przy użyciu oprogramowania LadderUX hierarchiczną mapę wartości konsumenckich. W drugim etapie zebrane wyniki zostały poddane analizie ilościowej z wykorzystaniem oprogramowania RStudio. W efekcie przeprowadzonych analiz uzyskano macierz zależności między wymiarami obrazu siebie a strukturą łańcuchów środków-celów. Wyniki badania pozwalają na wskazanie zależności pomiędzy łańcuchami środków-celów a obrazem self konsumenta oraz umożliwiają rozszerzenie dotychczasowej koncepcji środków-celów o aspekty indywidualne i symboliczne wynikające z autowizerunku konsumenta.

Opis:
In laboratory experiments, the impact of elicitation with a mixture of sodium silicate and iron chelate or sodium silicate alone on fatty acid composition in sprouts of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) has been examined. Buckwheat seeds and then sprouts were soaked for 0.5 h each day over six days in an aqueous solution of the mentioned elicitors. The sprouts were grown in the light regime of 16/8 h, day/night. After seven days of germination (sprouting), the composition of fatty acids in freeze-dried and powdered sprout tissues was analyzed by gas chromatography. The results showed significant changes in the composition of fatty acids in sprouts in comparison to buckwheat seeds. The results indicate that the germination of buckwheat seeds leads to an increase in myristic (C14:0), palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0) and behenic (C20:0) acid in sprouts, although the use of the elicitors, especially sodium silicate, inhibited this tendency. The sprouts of common buckwheat contained almost twice as much α-linolenic acid (C18:3) as the seeds did, and slightly less linoleic acid (C18:2). Moreover, the use of elicitors favored an increased accumulation of α-C18:3. As a result, germination drastically reduced the C18:2/a-C18:3 ratio by about 4 times, which may have a positive health effect. The buckwheat sprouts contained traces of eicosatrienoic (C20:3), eicosatetraenoic (C20:4), docosaenoic (C22:1) and docosadienoic (C22:2) acids, while their content in the seeds was between 0.6 and 2.4%. The buckwheat sprouts had a higher atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic index (TI) and a lower health index (HI) than seeds did, but the use of elicitors inhibited this tendency.

This paper presents a practical case involving a shopping mall location problem in the northeast countryside of Brazil. In this problem, conflicting objectives have been expressed in terms of seven criteria. Then, ten cities of the northeastern countryside have been selected to compose the space of actions. The problem plays a special role since Brazil is a big country that requires investments in the countryside. Thus, the shopping mall aims to stimulate economic growth in the respective region. In the study, this multi-objective problem is solved using the FITradeoff method. In FITradeoff, the combination of the paradigms of holistic evaluation and elicitation by decomposition in preference modeling are well explored, bringing different perspectives for the decision-maker during the decision process.

Opis:
This paper develops an expert based framework for analysing and synthesising the ship allision risk near the offshore wind farm (OWF) on the basis of a generic Fuzzy Bayesian network and FMEA analysis. This framework is specifically intended to overcome the difficulty of using traditional risk assessment methods in OWF allision. Under the introduced framework, subjective belief degrees are assigned to model the incompleteness encountered in establishing the knowledge base. The fuzzy transformation technology is then used to introduce all judgements results under various situations. Fully, a Bayesian network is established to aggregate all relevant attributes to the conclusion and to prioritise potential allision risk level of each ship categories. A series of case studies of different ship categories are studied to illustrate the application of the proposed framework. Results show that the fishing vessel and the service vessel have a higher allision risk than the merchant vessel due to insufficient risk detection. The collision consequence of the tanker is significantly higher than other types of vessel. The framework facilitates subjective risk assessment when historical failure data is not available in their practice, which provides support to OWF-safeguarding and decision-making.

Collisions are a serious threat to ship’s safety and despite the existence of codified rules and obligatory COLREG course for the seafarers, the number of maritime accidents is still great. Noticing this we have decided to use group model building to extract the knowledge about the process of collision avoidance from our group of experts. As a result, we obtained 18 factors which we have divided into 4 categories in order of importance. After reviewing the results we have noticed that the experts focused on superficial and theoretical aspects of collision avoidance. Therefore we have concluded that their knowledge despite our initial assumptions was insufficient to thoroughly revise this topic. However, we have also recognized some patterns that would suggest that the current rules could be improved. Our goal is to cause a discussion that will, hopefully, result in changes in education, laws, or both.

Understanding societal preferences towards health is vital in public decisions on nancing health technologies. Thought experiments in which respondents choose between health states are used to understand the importance of individual criteria. Competing models of preference structure can be compared by their ability to explain empirical observations. One of the key challenges when constructing such models is that they have to aggregate preferences dened in multiple-criteria space. In the present paper, we test whether treating the impact of health worsening (dened using EQ-5D-5L descriptive system, i.e. decomposing health status in ve criteria) as a fuzzy concept can improve the model fit. To test if fuzzy approach to multiple-criteria preferences aggregation is valid, we compare a standard, crisp model (SM) with two models using fuzzy sets (JKL, previously proposed in the literature; and FMN introduced here). We nd FMN better than SM, and SM better than JKL. Anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort seem to weigh most in preferences. According to FMN, self-care and usual activities are associated with largest imprecision in preferences. The respondents are susceptible to framing eects when time unit is changed: e.g. measuring the duration in days results in short intervals mattering more than when expressed as weeks. We conclude that the fuzzy-based framework is promising, but requires careful work on the exact specication.

Panax quinquefolium L., belonging to the Araliaceae family, along with P. ginseng is one of the well-known species of ginseng. Multidirectional pharmacological action of this plant is attributed to triterpene saponins called ginsenosides. Pharmacopoeial raw material are roots obtained from the field crops which are time-consuming and require expensive agrotechnical procedures. Therefore, the new sources of ginseng biomass are sought such as in vitro suspension cultures. P. quinquefolium L. cell cultures, treated with the elicitation of methyl jasmonate (MJ) in concentration 50 and 250 μmol L-1, synthesize more ginsenosides than control cultures. The highest increase (2.2-fold) of all examined compounds was noted using 250 μmol L-1 MJ. In this condition, the predominantly quantitative metabolite was Rb1 ginsenoside belonging to protopanaxadiol derivatives.

Opis:
Since student learning and supervision are viewed as social processes, investigations into doctoral learning need to consider social learning theories and ways to illuminate student relations during this time. For such social research, interviews are the most extensively used instruments to gather data, but the data can be enriched by the use of visuals. This article reports on the value of two modes of graphic elicitation interviews to delve into factors that impacted on the progress of research master’s and doctoral students at one university. The studies were exploratory and the approach was within the framework of participatory visual research methodologies. The first setting involved 11 participants who were particularly successful in the completion of their studies. In accordance with the socio-cultural theory, the students completed a diagram in the form of a relational map, after having completed a table in which they brainstormed the people, artifacts, and processes that contributed most to their success. In the second setting, 10 less diligent students were instructed to complete drawings (timelines) to illustrate their research journeys. These were guided by three questions to ensure that the students focused on the topic. In both instances, the graphics (diagram/drawing) were used to elicit interviews, which were tape recorded. In the second setting, the situated learning theory, the social capital theory, and the self-regulated learning theory were used to analyze the data and identify themes in the narratives. The paper highlights the advantages and limitations of both methods. Both methods facilitated unexpected outcomes. The biggest advantage of drawings was that they were unconstrained by the researcher’s previous knowledge about the topic. Moreover, their greater flexibility allowed participants more freedom of expression and a stronger voice. However, the selection of visuals (such as diagrams, tables, or drawings) should be based on the specific aims of the research.

Opis:
This study investigates whether adding a real interlocutor to elicitation techniques would result in requests that are different from those gathered through versions with a hypothetical interlocutor. For this purpose, a written method is chosen. One group of 40 students receive a written discourse completion task (DCT) with two situations that ask respondents to write emails on paper to an imaginary professor. This data is compared to earlier data collected from 27 students, where a group of students composed emails for the same situations and sent them electronically to their professor. Thus, while one group write emails to a hypothetical professor, the other group is provided with a real interlocutor. The data is analyzed for the inclusion of opening and closing moves, density, the level of directness and the choices of moves in the opening and closing sequences, as well as the choices of supportive moves. Results indicate significant differences in (the) level of directness, and the choices of moves in the opening and closing sequences. The other analyses do not show significant differences. The findings reveal that the addition of a real interlocutor does make a difference, albeit not a drastic one. The results have implications for the design of elicitation techniques that aim to simulate real life.
