Opis:
Neutron generator consisting of an electron linear accelerator and a tungsten X-ray converter can produce a neutron flux of 109 n/s and 1011 n/s at electron energies of 10 and 15 MeV, respectively, with an electron beam intensity of 1014 e/s which means 160 and 240 W of electron incident beam power, respectively. Two stage neutron production with an electron to photon natural tungsten converter and a photon to neutron 9Be converter are equal or less efficient than one stage tungsten converter only. There is a low neutron separation energy of 9Be and a small cross section for the photonuclear reaction g(9Be,8Be*)n in comparison to photonuclear cross section in all tungsten isotopes for the photon energy range in and below resonance region. Results of the neutron generator modeling performed with the Fluka Monte-Carlo code are presented in this article.

. In recent years the similarity of dosimetric characteristics of modern linear accelerators with the same make, model and nominal energy, has become more common. The goal of this study was to quantitatively investigate the reproducibility of the basic photon and electron dosimetry data from Neptun 10PC accelerators across the institutions. In the current study, the photon and electron dosimetry data collected during acceptance and initial commissioning of six Neptun 10PC linear accelerators are analyzed. The dates of original installations of these six machines were evenly spread out over a 5 year period and the series of measurements were conducted during an average of 1-2 months after original installations. All units had identical energies and beam modifiers. For photon beams, the collected data include depth dose data, output factors and beam profile data in water. For electron beams, in addition to depth dose data and output factors, the effective source skin distance for 10 × 10 cm field size is also presented. For most beam parameters the variation (one standard deviation), was less than 1.0% (less than 2% for 2 parameters). A variation of this magnitude is expected to be observed during annual calibration of well-maintained accelerators. In conclusion, this study is presenting a consistent set of data for Neptun 10PC linear accelerators. This consistency implies that for this model, a standard data set of basic photon and electron dosimetry could be established, as a guide for future commissioning, beam modeling and quality assurance purposes.

Opis:
Positron annihilation spectroscopy is often performed using radioactive sources for bulk measurements or positron beams for depth resolved measurements. Both have many advantages and great capabilities for a variety of applications. In the recent history, we have shown that positron annihilation spectroscopy can be carried out directly using high energy photons without the need for positron source or positron beam. This approach brings unique capabilities for some specific applications and promotes the use of positron annihilation spectroscopy in new areas of materials science and probably in industrial applications. Some of the important applications include developing new nondestructive highly penetrating sensitive probe for structural and engineering materials. It can also greatly advance positron applications in bulk semiconductors, electronic and photonic materials as well as in polymers, ceramics, and liquids. The recently developed γ-induced positron spectroscopy in HZDR in Dresden provides an example of an excellent facility for many of these applications. When incorporated with pulsed accelerators, γ-induced positron annihilation spectroscopy may trigger novel studies of transient states in matter and explore several solid-state processes that take place on short time scale. In this article I will review the history and development of the technique and its incorporation in a wide range of accelerators including table top electron accelerators, pulsed electron accelerators, and Van de Graaff accelerators. Then I will introduce a design for a new γ-induced positron annihilation spectroscopy facility based on using small nuclear research reactors or neutron generators. The paper presents all the possible approaches for γ-induced positron annihilation spectroscopy and discusses its potential and limitations to guide the efforts in further development of the technique and illustrate the unique aspects that the technique can bring to positron science and applications.

Opis:
The paper describes two methods that use Monte Carlo transport code for computing the photonuclear isotope yield for arbitrary target activation conditions. One of them is based on a direct simulation of new nuclei generation events (DSE method). The other one involves a step-by-step calculation of isotope microyield along the photon trajectories (SBSM method). The techniques have been realized in the computer codes using the PENELOPE package of 2001, 2006 and 2008 versions. The program benchmarking was performed using experimental data on the activity distributions of 67Cu isotope produced in the 68Zn(gamma,p)67Cu reaction in thick zinc targets. Both approaches have shown to give similar results at an appreciably greater speed of the SBSM method. The results of simulation based on the PENELOPE 2006 and 2008 codes are in excellent agreement with all experimental data. At the same time, the PENELOPE 2001 computations give good agreement with the experimental results for target activation by the electron beam, but in the case of target exposed to bremsstrahlung systematic underestimation of about 15% has been observed.

Opis:
The exhaust gases from marine diesel engines contain high SO2 and NOx concentration. The applicability of the electron beam flue gas treatment technology for purification of marine diesel exhaust gases containing high SO2 and NOx concentration gases was the main goal of this paper. The study was performed in the laboratory plant with NOx concentration up to 1700 ppmv and SO2 concentration up to 1000 ppmv. Such high NOx and SO2 concentrations were observed in the exhaust gases from marine high-power diesel engines fuelled with different heavy fuel oils. In the first part of study the simulated exhaust gases were irradiated by the electron beam from accelerator. The simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx were obtained and their removal efficiencies strongly depend on irradiation dose and inlet NOx concentration. For NOx concentrations above 800 ppmv low removal efficiencies were obtained even if applied high doses. In the second part of study the irradiated gases were directed to the seawater scrubber for further purification. The scrubbing process enhances removal efficiencies of both pollutants. The SO2 removal efficiencies above 98.5% were obtained with irradiation dose greater than 5.3 kGy. For inlet NOx concentrations of 1700 ppmv the NOx removal efficiency about 51% was obtained with dose greater than 8.8 kGy. Methods for further increase of NOx removal efficiency are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Gamma and neutron radiation is produced during the normal operation of linear accelerators like Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg (FLASH) or X-ray Free Electron Laser (X-FEL). Gamma radiation cause general degeneration of electronics devices and neutron fluence can be a reason of soft error in memories and microcontrollers. X-FEL accelerator will be built only in one tunnel, therefore most of electronic control systems will be placed in radiation environment. Exposing control systems to radiation may lead to many errors and unexpected failure of the whole accelerator system. Thus, the radiation monitoring system able to monitor radiation doses produced near controlling systems is crucial. Knowledge of produced radiation doses allows to detect errors caused by radiation, schedule essential replacement of control systems and prevent accelerator from serious damages. The paper presents the project of radiation monitoring system able to monitor radiation environment in real time.

Opis:
. In radiotherapy with electron beams, scattered radiation from an electron applicator influences the dose distribution in the patient. The contribution of this radiation to the patient dose is significant, even in modern accelerators. In most of radiotherapy treatment planning systems, this component is not explicitly included. In addition, the scattered radiation produced by applicators varies based on the applicator design as well as the field size and distance from the applicators. The aim of this study was to calculate the amount of scattered dose contribution from applicators. We also tried to provide an extensive set of calculated data that could be used as input or benchmark data for advanced treatment planning systems that use Monte Carlo algorithms for dose distribution calculations. Electron beams produced by a NEPTUN 10PC medical linac were modeled using the BEAMnrc system. Central axis depth dose curves of the electron beams were measured and calculated, with and without the applicators in place, for different field sizes and energies. The scattered radiation from the applicators was determined by subtracting the central axis depth dose curves obtained without the applicators from that with the applicator. The results of this study indicated that the scattered radiation from the electron applicators of the NEPTUN 10PC is significant and cannot be neglected in advanced treatment planning systems. Furthermore, our results showed that the scattered radiation depends on the field size and decreases almost linearly with depth.

Exhaust gases with high SO2 concentrations are emitted from combustion of high sulphur fossil fuels and from different industrial processes (e.g. copper smelter and sintering plants). The application of the electron beam process for SO2 and NOx removal from such flue gases was investigated. A parametric study was carried out to determine the SO2 and NOx removal efficiency as a function of temperature and humidity of irradiated gases, absorbed dose and ammonia stoichiometry. The efficiency 90–95% of SO2 removal was obtained in the optimal treatment conditions with an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 15% vol. The synergistic effect of high SO2 content on NOx removal was indicated. The collected by-product was a mixture of ammonium sulphate and nitrate. The content of heavy metals in the by- -products was many times lower than the values accepted for commercial fertilizers.

Radiation technology may contribute to the environmental protection to a great extent. Electron beam industrial installations for flue gases containing SOx and NOx treatment have been already built in China and Poland. The same technology for high sulphur and high humidity off-gases (low quality lignite) has been successfully tested in an industrial pilot plant in Bulgaria. Pilot plant tests performed in Japan have illustrated that by applying electron beam for municipal waste incinerator off-gases treatment the concentration of dioxins can be reduced by 80%, other persistent organic pollutants can be depredated as well. The positive results of electron beam wastewater treatment are the basis for a full-scale industrial plant being built in the South Korea. A pilot gamma plant for sludge irradiation producing a high grade organic fertilizer is in operation in India. All these achievements are reported in this paper.
