Opis:
Considering the increased demographic aging and system changes in the welfare system in Poland, home care became one of the most important forms of taking care of disabled or elderly persons. Although the country is rooted in the idea of a nanny state, based on large institutions and providing minimum income, for a long time now family has been considered as the basic provider of informal care to the elderly. The aim of the present study is to give some insight into the resources of adult children providing care to their elderly, disabled parents. In order to acquire a comprehensive perception of the phenomenon, the authors chose an interpretavist paradigm and applied a phenomenographic method. 21 participants, aged 41–65, who were caregivers of their parents, took part in semi-structured interviews. Two main research problems were formulated: (1) How do the participants perceive their resources as caregivers of their elderly, disabled parents? (2) What kind of support related to the care of their parents do they consider essential? Results: The participants distinguish two main kinds of resources: internal (e.g. values, passions, feelings for parents, economic situation) and external (e.g. parents, family, friends, professionals, medical equipment and centers they have access to). The narratives of the participants also indicate a number of needs they experience. Implications for practice are discussed.

Opis:
Within the context of high filial norms and a limited formal care system for the elderly in Lithuania the paper examines the effects of adult children migration on intergenerational solidarity from elderly parents left behind perspective. More specifically, we analyze if changed geographic proximity as a result of adult children migration has crucial effects on the associational, affectual and functional dimensions of solidarity or it is (also) being predicted by other individual and familial factors. The analysis is based on a quantitative survey of elderly parents (N=305) with at least one migrant child. The results suggest that even if adult children migration has some negative impact for associational solidarity (and to a certain extent, for affectual one), in a way it is being compensated with positive impact on functional solidarity in terms of financial support. While greater geographic proximity as a result of adult children migration is the crucial factor of associational solidarity and determines some forms of functional solidarity, the affectual dimension of solidarity is being shaped by other familial and individual predictors.

Opis:
The ageing population is a great challenge for the whole world including churches, Christian communities, Christian families and the so-called “Christian countries”. The respect and support for elderly people is almost a common rule of social life in developed countries regardless of religious views. But in the Christian world this obligation has very strong religious justification – obligation enshrined in the Commandments of Old (the fourth/fifth Commandment) and New (the second one of The Greatest Commandments of Love) Testaments. Therefore between the Christianity – understood as a set of different communities sharing their beliefs in Jesus Christ – and aging population there are many very different connections including among others: honour and respect, privilege, obligations, giving – receiving relations, duty, charity, solidarity, dependency. They are present both in the teaching and the practice of different Christian communities starting with Churches, through NGOs and Christian societies, ending with Christian families. The paper shows some of these connections. It also tries – based on a case of Poland – to answer the question whether the Christianity is ready to face the aging of global population.

Opis:
This article is devoted to a discussion of old age in terms of Muslim theology. It starts with a brief reminder of Muslim religious anthropology. In the next part I focus on what the verses of the Quran say about old age, and how these verses were interpreted by Muslim scholars. The Quran instructs primarily being a good and caring in relation to old parents, presenting, among others, the stories of the prophets who treated their parents in a very noble and merciful way. I also focus on numerious hadiths discussing various issues related to old age - calling for showing respect to every older man, regardless of his or her race, religion or social origin. In the final passages I draw attention to some elements of Islamic etiquette and Sharia referring to aging and the elderly.

Opis:
The constantly increasing proportion of the elderly in the society makes it necessary to secure their needs – primarily health and financial, people-to-people contacts and providing support in organizing everyday life. In a special situation are the elderly whose children reside abroad, for – as the research conducted by the Authors shows – absence of immediate family members conveys the responsibility of securing the aforementioned needs to insitutions (such as: social welfare centers, nursing homes and non-governmental organizations) as well as people in their immediate vincinity (neighbors). The article's main focus are family relationships, since any changes caused by migration separation show a serious problem of weakening of family ties, lack of interest and limited cooperation of families with institutions that provide support to the seniors left behind in the country.

Opis:
In the context of the many challenges and threats of the modern civilization the family seems to need more and more support and assistance that will help it restore social functioning and awaken hope for a better tomorrow. In the sectors of social life there are many aid institutions, but among them increasingly important in giving help is social work which, acting at different levels, tries to help people overcome problems in the personal, family and social spheres. A special role is played by the social worker as a professional in the field of activities for the family. His activities include conducting therapy, counseling for families in general and counseling for children, young people and older people in the family.
