Celem artykułu jest ukazanie na tle tych ogólnych tendencji społecznych odnośnie opieki nad osobami starszymi sytuacji rodzin seniorów, którzy decyzją własną albo rodziny zamieszkali w całodobowej instytucji opiekuńczej, jaką jest dom pomocy społecznej. Analiza przeprowadzona w artykule ma na celu ukazanie tego typu instytucji opiekuńczej w perspektywie potrzeb rodzin mieszkańców domu pomocy społecznej. Na przykładzie Domu Pomocy Społecznej w Staniątkach pod Krakowem zostaną ukazane sposoby współpracy z rodzinami mieszkańców oraz wyzwania dla takiej współpracy. Poruszane wątki będą ukazywane z perspektywy podmiotu rozważań, a mianowicie z perspektywy rodziny seniora, a nie przez pryzmat jego samego. W tym sensie senior będzie pośrednim podmiotem niniejszych rozważań.
The aim of the article is to show what is the social situation of elderly family in the wide context of social care patterns and tendencies. Decision about living in the nursing home is changing the whole life and relations between old age person and his or her family. The current analysis is to show this kind of institution by the prism of family and elderly needs. Nursing Home in Staniątki near Cracow is presented as a good example of cooperation with elderly families. The way of contacts and cooperation, applied in this institution are shown as the good practice of support family, which member lives in the closed institution of care. The perspective of family needs is chosen to discuss dilemmas and other details to build as good cooperation as it could be.

Opis:
The decision to take responsibility for the care of seniors is largely conditioned by social and cultural factors. In the article, the correlation between collectivism/individualism and taking care of the elderly is described with the example of selected countries. The second part of the article is the analysis of social and cultural factors that have an impact on Poles’ opinions about institutional care and family obligations to elders. In the third part, new trends and social changes that will affect decisions regarding the care of the elderly are presented. There are clear differences between countries with a collectivist culture (where elderly care is the responsibility of family members), and the countries that value individualism (where institutional care is popular). In Poland, there is still social pressure to take care of older family members without institutional support, but the demographic situation and migration will change this attitude and popularize nonfamilial care.

Introduction. A factor that conditions the perception of the quality of life (QoL) is having a social network and relationships within it. The quality of life of seniors is assumed to be at a higher level if they are surrounded by those close to them in comparison to those living alone. The aim of the study was to assess differences in the quality of life of elderly rural residents depending on their family status. Materials and method. Due to the random and mixed selection of respondents, the study comprised a group of 588 representatives living in rural areas of Eastern Poland. The differentiated criterion of the groups of senior respondents was their family situation: living with a family or living alone. Assessment of the quality of life was conducted by means of the WHOQoL-bref questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to carry out statistical analysis of the data. Results. The respondents who lived with their families differed statistically to a significant extent (p<0.005) from those who lived alone. The former gave a better assessment of the majority of the QoL domains: physical, psychological and social. Obtaining higher mean values for the environmental domain among the respondents living alone (M=14.31) seemed to be an atypical and interesting phenomenon because seniors living with their relatives usually assessed that dimension better than those living alone. Conclusions. The family situation of seniors affected the level of quality of life. Living with their relatives may be expected to be favourable for seniors because it translates into better performance in physical, psychological and social domains. Loneliness, which frequently accompanies old age, leads to the deterioration of the quality of life.

The family is the basic cell of every society and is therefore a key element in the creation and existence of every state across the world. At the beginning of the 21st century, more than ever the institution of the family is in crisis, characterized by a particularly low interest in the state of marriage and a high divorce rate among young couples. The main negative elements acting on the existence of families in the Slovak Republic include in particular the low social and economic status of the population, the expansion of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, some family members moving to work elsewhere in Slovakia or abroad and also the gradual drifting apart of young families from parents and grandparents. If the crisis of social units has violated the harmony and adjourned original morality and ethics, we can look at the initial violence and many serious conflicts. In this paper we deal with the family in terms of key features. Subsequently, we analyze the harmonious family, the disharmonic family, friends and functionality. Further emphasis is on intergenerational solidarity in the social unit, which is essential to maintain and develop the company. Finally, it should be added that at present there are different views on the form of the family, including social and legislative form of homosexual social units. It should be noted that in the Slovak society the dominant view is on maintaining the traditional family.
Rodzina jest podstawową komórką wszystkich społeczeństw i dlatego też jest kluczowym elementem w powstawaniu i istnieniu wszystkich państw na świecie. Na początku XXI wieku wystąpił w sposób znacznie bardziej oczywisty niż kiedykolwiek wcześniej kryzys rodziny, charakteryzujący się niskim zainteresowaniem pastwa sytuacją rodzin i wysokim współczynnikiem rozwodów wśród młodych małżeństw. Negatywne zjawiska wpływające na życie rodzin w Republice Słowackiej to niska pozycja społeczna i status ekonomiczny ludności, coraz częstsze zażywanie narkotyków i leków psychotropowych, wyjazdy zarobkowe na terenie Słowacji i za granicą, jak również stopniowe oddalanie się młodych małżeństw od rodziców i dziadków. Jeśli podczas tego kryzysu jednostki społeczne naruszały harmonię i zasady tradycyjnej moralności i etyki, możemy mówić o początkach przemocy i wielu poważnych konfliktów. W tym artykule omówiono sytuację rodziny biorąc pod uwagę podstawowe zagadnienia. Zaprezentowano również opisowe i interpretatywne analizy rodzin harmonijnych, nieharmonijnych, jak również przyjaciół rodzin i ich funkcjonalności. Dalej kładzie się nacisk na solidarność międzypokoleniową w jednostkach społecznych, która to jest konieczna, aby utrzymać i rozwijać poczucie wspólnoty. Na końcu dodać należy, że mamy obecnie do czynienia z wielorakimi spojrzeniami na rodzinę, w tym regulację prawną i społeczną sytuacji związków homoseksualnych. Zauważyć należy, że w słowackim społeczeństwie przewagę ma tradycyjna wizja rodziny.

Opis:
Ensuring care and appropriate standard of living to elderly people constitute highly significant aspects of both the state and local social policy. However, the practice shows clearly that the issue of old age has never been a strength of the social policy in our country. One could even get the impression that in old age quality of life does not need to be increased, while it can even be decreased. Such approach to the issue of old age should be highly objectionable. Old age, as the last stage of one’s life, should be lived in dignity, while maintaining the sense of security. Special care and attention should be paid to single people, chronic patients and those with poor financial situation. An appropriately managed nursing home is a place that could protect a senior citizen from social exclusion, while providing professional care and good quality of life. The issue is of high significance as in Poland the public nursing services have not been yet developed well and their quality often remains a matter of concern, also in the moral aspect. This paper enters the discourse about the need of institutional support for the senior citizens and points out to the quality of life of residents of nursing homes.

Cel: Celem badania była próba określenia wizerunku starości i osób starszych oraz ich miejsca w rodzinie. Metody: Za narzędzie posłużył autorski kwestionariusz ilościowo-jakościowy. Badanie przeprowadzono wśród młodzieży na poziomie szkoły podstawowej w środowisku wiejskim. Wyniki: Wyniki wskazują, że największy odsetek badanych kojarzy słowo „starość” z własnymi dziadkami, a główne wartości, za które ankietowana młodzież ceni i szanuje osoby starsze, są realizowane w środowisku rodzinnym i należą do nich ciepłe uczucia, dzielenie się mądrością życiową oraz pomoc w wychowywaniu wnuków. Podobnie jak wśród młodzieży w środowisku miejskim1, wizerunek starości jest negatywny, natomiast deklarowane postawy wobec osób starszych prawie wyłącznie życzliwe, w znacznej mierze odnoszące się do starszych członków rodziny. Co ważne, głównym źródłem doświadczenia i wiedzy na temat starości dla zdecydowanej większości ankietowanych uczniów jest życie rodzinne, a także fakt, że mieszkali bądź wciąż mieszkają ze swoimi dziadkami. Wnioski: W związku z tym, to na rodzinie ciąży największa odpowiedzialność za kształtowanie wizerunku starości oraz postaw wobec osób starszych, zwłaszcza wśród dzieci i młodzieży.
Aim: The aim of the study was an attempt to determine the image of old age and the elderly in a family among primary school pupils in a rural environment. Methods: A qualitative-quantitative questionnaire served as a tool. Results: The results show that the term ‘old age’ was associated mainly with the respondents’ oldest family members, and the main values for which the elderly are respected included warm feelings, practical wisdom, and help in raising grandchildren, all of which are achievedin a family setting. Similarly to the results of the study conducted in an urban environment2, the image of old age is negative; however, the attitude towards the elderly is almost exclusively positive. Importantly, family life, and especially living with the grandparents, wasidentified as the main source of experience and knowledge aboutold age by the vast majority of respondents. Conclusions: Consequently, it is family members who are mostly responsible for shaping image and attitudes towards the elderly among children and adolescents.

The family is a community that receives the mission of guarding, showing and transmitting love that is a living reflection and real spreading of God’s love. In his Letter to the elderly John Paul II points to a particular role and to the need of experiencing love in the family by the old. This love is a requirement both of the commandment to love and of the fourth commandment “honor thy mother and thy father”, and it expresses the triple duty that the younger generation has to the older one, that is: acceptance of elderly people, help they expect and need, and appreciating their advantages. Such an attitude is one of the ways to build “the civilization of love” the world needs so much today.

Prezentowany tekst dotyczy ról, jakie we współczesnej rodzinie pełnią najstarsi jej członkowie, które omawiane są na podstawie wyników badań przeprowadzonych wśród pracowników instytucji pomocy w woj. podlaskim. Czy seniorzy są traktowani z szacunkiem czy też nie? Czy odgrywają znaczącą rolę w dzisiejszej rodzinie czy są raczej spychani na margines? Odpowiedzi na te i podobne pytania zawiera przedkładany artykuł.
Family, the basic unit of society, has always been exposed to changes caused by transformations of the surrounding reality. We are observing changes of the definition of family, changes of its functions, changes of everything that constitutes our everyday life. There are also transformations of the roles of family members – some are expanded, e.g. one parent must fulfill the obligations of both, while others narrowed. The presented text refers to the roles of the oldest members of the contemporary family, described on the basis of studies conducted among workers of welfare institutions in Podlaskie Voivodship. Are seniors treated with respect? Could they play a significant role in today’s family or is their role quite marginal? The answers to these and similar questions are included in the article.

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie osoby starszej w systemowym modelu rodziny ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na aspekt opieki nad nią oraz na jej potencjał w sytuacji kryzysów, jakie mają miejsce w obrębie rodziny. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Problem badawczy, jaki został podjęty w niniejszym artykule, zawarty jest w pytaniach: Jakie znaczenie w życiu osób starszych ma rodzina? Jaką rolę odgrywają osoby starsze w systemowym modelu rodziny? Jak przebiega opieka nad osobami starszymi w systemowym modelu rodziny, w której obrębie występują kryzysy? Wykorzystana została metoda analityczno-syntetyczna oparta na wybranej literaturze przedmiotu. PROCES WYWODU: Zaprezentowana została systemowa teoria rodziny, w której osoby starsze nie są jedynie biorcą opieki, lecz za pomocą posiadanych zasobów stanowią nieocenione wsparcie dla innych członków. Następnie przedstawione zostały przemiany we współczesnej rodzinie, które zaobserwować można na skutek uwarunkowań społeczno-kulturowych. Wywołały one w obrębie rodziny kryzysy, które w pracy ukazane zostały na przykładzie opieki nad osobami starszymi. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Obserwowany zanik rodzin wielopokoleniowych, a także obniżenie jakości relacji międzygeneracyjnych doprowadził do tego, że osoby starsze utraciły ówczesną rolę oraz odchodzi się od dostrzegania ich potencjału. W sytuacji braku ich samodzielności opieka nad osobami starszymi może przybierać coraz częściej formę instytucjonalną, za co odpowiedzialne są wspomniane uwarunkowania społeczno-kulturowe. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE ,REKOMENDACJE: Za pomocą edukacji powinno przekazywać się wiedzę na temat wartości relacji międzygeneracyjnych, a także potrzeb osób starszych, dla których rodzina stanowi najważniejsze środowisko, a w której szczególnego znaczenia nabiera troska o najstarszych jej członków.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to present the elderly in the systemic family model, with particular emphasis on the aspect of caring for them and on their potential in the situation of crises that take place in the family.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem discussed in this article is contained in the following questions: What is the meaning of the family in the life of elderly people?What role do the elderly play in the systemic family model? How does the process of taking care of the elderly in the systemic family model in which crises occur look like? The analytical-synthetic method was used, based on the selected literature on the subject.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The systemic theory of the family was presented, in which the elderly are not only the care recipients, but with their resources, provide invaluable support for other family members. Then, the changes in the modern family, which can be observed asa result of socio-cultural determinants, were presented. The crises, caused by the changes in the modern family, were presented in this work with the example of how families take care of the elderly.RESEARCH RESULTS: The observed disappearance of multigenerational families, as well as the decrease in the quality of intergenerational relations, has led to the elderly losing their former role while also failing to recognise their potential. In the case of lack of independence on the elderly side, caring for them may be taking on an institutional form, for which the aforementioned sociocultural determinants are responsible.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Education should convey knowledge about the value of intergenerational relations, as well as the needs of elderly people, for whom the family is the most important environment, and in which care for its eldest members is of particular importance.

Stale zwiększający się udział osób starszych w społeczeństwie wiąże się z koniecznością zabezpieczenia ich potrzeb ‒ przede wszystkim zdrowotnych, finansowych, w zakresie kontaktów międzyludzkich oraz udzielania wsparcia w organizacji życia codziennego. W szczególnej sytuacji znajdują się osoby starsze, których dorosłe dzieci przebywają za granicą, gdyż ‒ jak pokazały przeprowadzone przez autorki badania ‒ nieobecność członków najbliższej rodziny ceduje obowiązek zabezpieczenia wymienionych potrzeb na instytucje (ośrodki pomocy społecznej, domy pomocy społecznej i organizacje pozarządowe) oraz osoby z najbliższego otoczenia (sąsiadów). Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie relacji z rodziną, ponieważ ich zmiana w związku z rozłąką migracyjną pokazuje, że poważnym problem stało się osłabienie więzi rodzinnych oraz brak zainteresowania i ograniczona współpraca rodzin z instytucjami udzielającymi wsparcia pozostawionym w kraju seniorom.
The constantly increasing proportion of the elderly in the society makes it necessary to secure their needs – primarily health and financial, people-to-people contacts and providing support in organizing everyday life. In a special situation are the elderly whose children reside abroad, for – as the research conducted by the Authors shows – absence of immediate family members conveys the responsibility of securing the aforementioned needs to insitutions (such as: social welfare centers, nursing homes and non-governmental organizations) as well as people in their immediate vincinity (neighbors). The article's main focus are family relationships, since any changes caused by migration separation show a serious problem of weakening of family ties, lack of interest and limited cooperation of families with institutions that provide support to the seniors left behind in the country.

Opis:
One of modern challenges facing not only politicians, economists or sociologists is the demographic makeup of Poland, which is a derivative of tendencies that are visible in the whole of Europe. Demographic changes are not leaving the Church unaffected. One has to take into account the decreasing number of children and the youth, who are the a major target of pastoral initiatives in Poland. The adult and elderly groups existing in the Church will grow, which will create a demand for new and adequate pastoral solutions for them. The pastoral care of families, elderly, lonely and sick will face special challenges. The article attempts to present the lines of development of activities conducted in the mentioned sectors of pastoral care which the Polish Church should pay attention to.

Opis:
Elderly care and support in their daily lives is one of the most significant challenges of an ageing population. The increasing demand for various types of support (both in the community and in institutions) should be considered in the context of existing socioeconomic- cultural-demographic characteristics. This article presents models of care for dependent elderly people and the analysis how various models fit the situation of dependency care in Poland. Five models describing the dependencies and coupling between informal help provided within the family network and community support networks and formal help are: hierarchical compensatory model, substitutional model, specificity model, supplementation model, complementarity model. The organization of care for the elderly in Poland introduced by the authority can be established that is consistent with the hierarchical compensatory model. This model is most effective, but in Poland is still not completely implemented, and the fragmentation makes that seniors do not receive optimal support.

The aging society is a serious challenge for state authorities creating and implementing social policies. The purpose of this paper is to present the situation of the elderly in our country, the role of the state in relation to dependent persons and their families, as well as to indicate a systematic solution in the form of day care centers, which every year are gaining more and more recognition among the public.
