    Purpose: Eco-innovation appears to be at the very heart of the European Union policy. It is of crucial importance for both single companies and the whole economic systems. At the same time eco-innovation is driven by the countless factors. Thus the purpose of the present research was to indicate the determinants of the efficiency of eco-innovation. Design/methodology/approach: The research relied on the systematic literature studies performed with the use of SALSA (Search, AppraisaL, Synthesis, Analysis) method. It focused on the papers published between January 2000 and June 2016. A total of 469 publications were examined selected form Scopus database. The precise appraisal procedure allowed indicating the ones including the determinants of the efficiency of eco-innovation. Findings: The studies of literature allowed indicating a total of 24 determinants. Moreover the results indicate that the determinants of the efficiency of eco-innovation may be divided based on two criteria. The first includes costs-related and revenues-related determinants. The second includes strategic and operational levels. Research limitations/implications Together eleven publications were omitted in the research due to their incompletion or inaccessibility. Practical implications: Stimulating eco-innovation seems vital for all companies. Delivering a comprehensive set of the determinants of its efficiency will support executives in managing eco-innovation. Originality/value: The paper attempts to fulfil the research gap concerning the determinants of the efficiency of eco-innovation.
    Cel badań Ekoinnowacje leżą w samym sercu polityki Unii Europejskiej, co jest szczególnie istotne zarówno dla pojedynczych spółek jak i całych systemów ekonomicznych. Jednocześnie, ekoinnowacje zależą od niezliczonej liczby czynników, stąd też celem podjętych badań było wskazanie determinant warunkujących efektywność ekoinnowacji. Metodologia badań Badania przeprowadzono w oparciu o systematyczny przegląd literatury z wykorzystaniem metody SALSA (Search, AppraisaL, Synthesis, Analysis). Skoncentrowano się na artykułach opublikowanych między styczniem 2000 a czerwcem 2016 roku, łącznie przeanalizowano 469 publikacji korzystając z bazy danych Scopus. Szczegółowe badania pozwoliły na określenie tych, które dotyczyły czynników warunkujących efektywność ekoinnowacji. Wyniki badań Studia literaturowe wskazały 24 determinant. Ponadto, wyniki badań pozwoliły na dokonanie podziału czynników określających efektywność ekoinnowacji według dwóch następujących kryteriów: zależnych od kosztów i przychodów, oraz na poziomie operacyjnym i strategicznym. Ograniczenia badań Łącznie 11 publikacji zostało pominiętych w badaniu z uwagi na ich niekompletność lub niedostępność. Zastosowanie praktyczne przeprowadzonych badań Stymulowanie ekoinnowacji ma szczególne znaczenie dla wszystkich przedsiębiorstw. Zestawienie czynników warunkujących efektywność ekoinnowacji może wspierać kierownictwo w ich zarządzaniu. Oryginalność/znaczenie przeprowadzonych badań Praca wypełnia lukę badawczą w zakresie czynników warunkujących efektywność ekoinnowacji.

    W artykule scharakteryzowano aktywność ekoklastrów w Polsce, wykorzystujących w różnym stopniu odnawialne źródła energii w kontekście prawnie określonej koncepcji klastrów energii. Podkreślono, że ekoinnowacyjność i zrównoważony rozwój jako ich kluczowe atrybuty przyczyniają się do kształtowania zielonej gospodarki. Świadczą o tym cele strategiczne ekoklastrów: wzrost konkurencyjności i innowacyjności lokalnej gospodarki, zwiększenie bezpieczeństwa energetycznego, poprawa efektywności energetycznej, minimalizowanie negatywnego oddziaływania sektora energetyki na środowisko naturalne, aktywizacja regionów słabo rozwiniętych. Ponieważ inwestycje związane z zieloną gospodarką są kapitałochłonne, wymagają partnerstwa lokalnego i wsparcia publicznego. Przeprowadzone badania desk research wykazują, że konieczność sprostania wymogom UE w dziedzinie wykorzystania odnawialnych źródeł energii stymuluje do rozwoju klastrów energii w oparciu o dotychczasowy potencjał strategiczny i doświadczenia ekoklastrów.

    Nowadays, the competitiveness of the economy, which is determined to a large extent by the innovative activities of enterprises and institutions, is of great importance for economic development. An important type of innovation is eco-innovations. Eco-innovations are currently a very timely topic undertaken by researchers, but also an important element of the activities of many companies. As a network of service providers for eco-innovations in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, ECOLABNET fits perfectly in this trend. It aims to support, enable and empower companies to undertake sustainable eco-innovation activities in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond. The aim of this publication is to present the results of research on the eco-innovation needs of SME enterprises of the Baltic Sea countries and potential collaboration in this field with external entities. The services developed as packages of eco-innovation services in Ecolabnet that can meet the identified needs were indicated. The survey was conducted between March and May 2019 and covered SMEs in six countries: Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The subjects of the study were manufacturing companies that improve their products or services. The aim of the research was to gain an understanding of the needs and challenges related to eco-innovation in the context of sustainable development, to identify the future eco-innovation needs of manufacturing SMEs and collaborations with external actors, and to determine how and through which services the Ecolabnet can meet these needs and contribute to the growth of the enterprise. The manufacturing enterprises in this survey were motivated to eco-innovate. However, they lack knowledge on eco-innovation in its broadest sense, and therefore, urgently need the help of external experts, business partners, and networks in this area. The survey covered three areas: Business, Development, and Technology/Production. Business topic areas that entrepreneurs placed a high emphasis on were: branding and communication, supplier relations, customer insights and financial aspects. Within the needs in terms of development put most emphasis on product design, process development, bio-based materials and biodegradable materials. In the last category of identified needs Technology/Production respondents indicated increasing process efficiency, energy optimization and material efficiency. The research results also indicate that product design as well as branding and communication are urgent needs in the field of external expertise. Of the potential needs, the respondents also indicated customer insights, other alternative materials, business models, value chain assessment, and service design.

    Purpose: authors based on trends, goals, theses and examples of good practices presented in the article focus – both in theoretical and practical dimensions – on striving to identify need to develop eco-innovation as an element strengthening environmental policy in global, regional and national dimension. Design/methodology/approach: theses presented in the article have been verified using the following methods: literature review, critical literature analysis, document and comparative analysis, and examples of good practice. Findings: innovations in the field of ecology focus in particular on human activities in two areas. The first is use of existing living and inanimate natural resources resulting from need to maintain life expectancy. In the second area, focus on its protection and care for its duration. Therefore, it should be emphasized that associating innovations with them is extremely important in modern ecology. Striving to create new eco-friendly solutions of an eco-innovative nature both in the sphere of its social acceptance and in utilitarian dimension. Originality/value: the article enriches, and at the same time develops, knowledge and discussion in the field of defining eco-innovations – and their impact on the lives of communities and individuals. Thanks to knowledge presented in the article, the need to look for solutions that can strengthen the impact of eco-innovation on the natural environment is clearly justified.

    The discussion presented in this paper refers to a broadly understood subject of a circular economy and related issues of eco-innovation, with a particular focus on the two-way relationship between the two. Based on data on EU member states’ activities in this area, the aim of this paper is to assess the impact of a circular economy on eco-innovation development. First, the idea of sustainable development from the perspective of a circular economy was presented along with the changes in its perception. Furthermore, the role of the European Commission was highlighted with respect to the legislation of that area for EU member states. A literature review was initiated by the European Commission’s forecasts concerning unsustainable production and consumption. In the same section, the definitions of a circular economy and eco-innovation were provided, and a close relationship between these two aspects often highlighted in scientific publications was indicated. Logit models were developed to verify the impact of a circular economy on eco-innovation development. For that purpose, the GRETL econometric package was used. Circular economy indicators and eco-innovation indicators available at the Eurostat and European Commission websites were used as diagnostic variables in the models. In two cases, the logit models indicated a significant relationship between the areas in question, which was also presented as a linear regression function. At the final stage, conclusions were presented, which included research limitations and future research directions.
    Rozważania przedstawione w niniejszym artykule odnoszą się do szeroko pojętej problematyki gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym i ściśle z nią związanego - zagadnienia ekoinnowacji, w kontekście których szczególny nacisk położono na występującą pomiędzy nimi dwukierunkową współzależność. Bazując na danych z działalności państw członkowskich UE we wspomnianym obszarze, za cel niniejszego opracowania przyjęto ocenę wpływu gospodarki cyrkulacyjnej na rozwój ekoinnowacji. W pierwszej kolejności nawiązano do idei zrównoważonego rozwoju z perspektywy gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym, a co za tym idzie zmian w jej postrzeganiu. Ponadto zaakcentowano rolę Komisji Europejskiej w zakresie legislacji tej kwestii dla krajów członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Przegląd literatury został zainicjowany przez prognozy Komisji Europejskiej dotyczące niezrównoważonej produkcji i konsumpcji. W tym miejscu przybliżono również definicje: gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym i ekoinnowacji oraz wskazano na ścisły związek pomiędzy tymi dwoma aspektami, często podkreślany w publikacjach naukowych. W celu weryfikacji wpływu gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym na rozwój ekoinnowacji opracowano modele logitowe. Do tego celu wykorzystano pakiet ekonometryczny - GRETL, w ramach którego zmienne diagnostyczne stanowiły udostępnione na stronach internetowych Eurostatu i Komisji Europejskiej wskaźniki gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym oraz wskaźniki ekoinnowacji. Otrzymane modele logitowe w dwóch przypadkach wskazały na istotną zależność pomiędzy wybranymi obszarami, co przedstawiono również w postaci liniowej funkcji regresji. Na ostatnim etapie zaprezentowano wnioski, w ramach których nakreślono ograniczenia badawcze i kierunki przyszłych badań.

    Purpose: The purpose of the author’s research was the evaluation of activities related to eco-innovations of micro- and small-sized enterprises (MSSEs) in the Małopolskie Province. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the results of the author’s own surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021 based on a total sample of 524 micro- and small-sized entrepreneurs who declared their interest in taking part in the survey. The entrepreneurs answered questions regarding their companies’ current operations, sources of financing and also assessed their activities in the context of eco-innovative solutions or partnerships with R&B institutions. Findings: The paper presents the role of innovations in the process of sustainable development accounting for environmental aspects as implemented by entrepreneurs as part of investments. Originality/value: research shows how important innovation is in the SME sector.

    The aim of the study is to indicate the essence and increasing importance of the ecologization of innovative development in the glocalization of economic processes as well as the potential benefits of eco-innovation for long-term objectives of regions development. The study systematize the knowledge on this topic, and indicate the necessity of their continuous development. The applied methodology is based on an analysis of scientific literature European countries. The research methodology is systematization of approaches to the direction of innovation processes for the development, creation and implementation of innovations in the form of new products, technology, method, form of production organization, etc., which directly or indirectly contributes to reducing the environmentally destructive effects of production and consumption on the environment and solving environmental problems. The authors hypothesis is that the glocalization on the basis of the implementation of environmental innovations will contribute to the sustainable development of the economy of the regions. This is a new way of looking at the region development, i.e. that looks at how ecologization of innovative development should be used for strategic advantage of region and how processes of ecologization of innovative development of the region can be a catalyst for the processes of market glocalization and promote sustainable development of the regional economy.

    Purpose: On the basis of the obtained research results, an attempt was made to answer the following research question: what actions should be taken within the framework of the main strategic directions adopted in the developed strategy for the internal development of the research project partners, co-creating a network of service providers supporting eco-innovation of SMEs? Design/methodology/approach: In the research process, the authors applied both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The primary quantitative tool was a survey questionnaire, and the qualitative tool was a panel discussion. The evaluation was based on 12 evaluation criteria which relate directly to the established procedures for preparing and implementing the Internal Development Strategy. These criteria have been divided into four groups concerning different stages of strategy implementation: 1) initiating, 2) preparing, 3) implementing, and 4) monitoring. Findings: The article focuses on the evaluation of a comparative strategy for the internal development of Research and Development Institutes providing their eco-innovation services to SMEs, along with other consortium partners, intermediary organizations and companies, and the Ecolabnet eco-innovation network, also referred to as the Ecolabnet network of eco-innovation services. Research limitations/implications: 1) The great diversity of project partners for whom the internal development strategy was developed. 2) The specificity of the project, as its main objective was to create a cooperation network for the provision of consulting services for the development of eco-products and eco-services for SMEs in the region of the Baltic Sea States. Practical implications: Development of conception of internal development strategy of the project teams. Originality/value: The summarized findings and reflections relate to the international network of eco-innovation service providers in SMEs (Ecolabnet), established under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region program for 2014-2020. The authors of the article co-founded the network as partners of a project consortium on behalf of Czestochowa University of Technology. The consortium consists of eleven partners from six countries in the Baltic Sea region.

Na podstawie badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych w MŚP branży ochrony środowiska zidentyfikowano źródła wiedzy zewnętrznej wykorzystywanej przez przedsiębiorstwa oraz intensywność ich współpracy z innymi podmiotami. W szczególności skupiono się na określeniu zależności znaczenia przypisywanego poszczególnym źródłom wiedzy zewnętrznej oraz intensywności podejmowanej współpracy z poziomem ekoinnowacyjności badanych przedsiębiorstw.
    The article presents selected problems related to external knowledge acquisition and eco-innovation in enterprises. On the basis of empirical study conducted in the SME from environmental protection sector, sources of external knowledge used by enterprises and the intensity of their cooperation were identified. Particular emphasis was placed on the analysis of the relationship between the importance attributed to various sources of external knowledge, intensity of undertaken cooperation, and eco-innovation outputs of surveyed enterprises.

    Opis:
    Celem niniejszej publikacji jest analiza i omówienie działań podejmowanych przez polskie przedsiębiorstwa-dostawców technologii środowiskowych nakierowanych na tworzenie i rozwój innowacyjnych, przyjaznych dla środowiska produktów (tzw. innowacji ekologicznych, ekoinnowacji). Prowadzone badania jakościowe dotyczą, między innymi, wpływu uwarunkowań, takich jak technologia, rynek, regulacje i cechy charakterystyczne przedsiębiorstwa na rozwój ekoinnowacyjnych rozwiązań w analizowanych firmach. Na podstawie wywiadów pogłębionych, przeprowadzonych z przedstawicielami czterdziestu polskich firm, można określić czynniki determinujące ich ekoinnowacyjną działalność oraz opisać motywacje do tworzenia ekoinnowacji produktowych. Są to przede wszystkim czynniki związane z rynkiem i technologią. Wniosek ten jest zgodny z wynikami badań innych autorów, którzy podkreślają ważną rolę rynku, technologii i cech charakterystycznych firm w tworzeniu ekoinnowacji. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań nie potwierdzają natomiast tezy podkreślającej istotną rolę regulacji dla tworzenia ekoinnowacji produktowych
    The aim of this paper is to analyse and discuss the actions undertaken by Polish enterprises operating in the field of environmentally sound technologies to create and implement innovative, environmentally friendly products (i.e. environmental innovations, eco-innovations). The qualitative study examines the impact of the determinants, such as technology, market, regulation and firm specific factors, on the development of eco-innovative solutions of analysed companies. Based on the in-depth interviews conducted with forty selected companies, it is possible to specify the determinants of firms’ eco-innovative activity and motivation factors for creating product eco-innovations in Poland. These are mainly market- and technology-related factors. This conclusion is in line with the studies emphasizing the role of market, technology and firm specific factors as the determinants of eco-innovations, but in opposition to the results supporting the thesis that regulatory aspect is highly important for the companies that create and develop environmentally friendly novelties.
