    The author, on the background of the educational system for adults, has presented the army as an institution which, fulfilling determined function within state defense and security system, leads also education activities for soldiers. Schooling in the military has got long tradition and its history comes from the Kosciuszko Insurrection in 1794. Educational objectives in those times and later (Polish Legions, time of the second Commonwealth) had been aimed at coping with illiteracy and improving general knowledge of soldiers. After the recovery of Poland in 1918 to the rebuild Polish army came up to 40 % of illiterate conscripts. The contemporary military force conducts different forms of non-scholar professional education of soldiers - laying stress especially on the personnel self-improvement. In the educational self-improvement system of the service man the biggest role play post-graduate studies, qualification, specialist and language courses as well as military exercises. According to the researches conducted lately up to 60 % professional soldiers take a part in different courses, and this is determined by the qualification requirements on the posts their occupied - so claim 46 % examined staff. In addition in the framework of the educational activities there are also conducted cultural, recreation and sports activities which make an important element of all soldiers' development in modern military forces.

    Opis:
    The article presents a kind of sketch of the War Studies University (pol. Akademia Sztuki Wojennej; ASzWoj), the university which educates military and civil elites according to the needs of national defense and security. The university on the one hand creates new directions for the development of modern military streams, on the other side, the university continues the achievements of its predecessors and maintains the glorious traditions associated with the education and professional development of command, staff and logistics staff of the Polish Armed Forces. The article presents the historical outline of ASzWoj, describes its current structure as well as the tasks and role that the university performs in the system of higher military education. The content of the article includes the main threats and opportunities of the academy’s activity in contemporary conditions as well as visions and perspectives for its further functioning and development.
    Artykuł prezentuje swoistego rodzaju szkic Akademii Sztuki Wojennej (ASzWoj) jako wszechnicy kształcącej wojskowe i cywilne elity na potrzeby obronności i bezpieczeństwa państwa. Uczelni, która z jednej strony kreuje nowe kierunki rozwoju współczesnej myśli wojskowej i jest zorientowana na innowacyjne badania oraz zastosowanie teorii i praktyki sztuki wojennej, z drugiej zaś strony akademii, która kontynuuje dokonania swych poprzedniczek i podtrzymuje chlubne tradycje związane z kształceniem i doskonaleniem zawodowym kadr dowódczych, sztabowych i logistycznych Sił Zbrojnych Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej. Artykuł przedstawia rys historyczny ASzWoj, jej aktualną strukturę oraz zadania i rolę, jaką uczelnia odrywa w systemie wyższego kształcenia wojskowego. W tekście zaprezentowano główne zagrożenia i szanse działalności Akademii w uwarunkowaniach współczesnych oraz wizje i perspektywy jej dalszego funkcjonowania i rozwoju.

    Obecna sytuacja polityczna Polski związana z integracją europejską i współpracą wojskową w ramach NATO sprawiła, że znajomość języków obcych w Siłach Zbrojnych RP stała się realną potrzebą. Nie dziwi zatem, że nauczanie języka angielskiego w resorcie obrony narodowej odgrywa ważną rolę w procesie edukacji żołnierzy. Istnieją jednak obszary wymagające wprowadzenia istotnych zmian systemowych. Z uwagi na ten fakt, nadrzędnym celem artykułu jest analiza systemu kształcenia językowego w Wojsku Polskim w odniesieniu do aktualnych potrzeb jego uczestników. Część pierwsza ma charakter definicyjny i omawia sposób organizacji doskonalenia językowego w SZ RP. Część druga ma charakter praktyczny wskazujący elementy, które należy usprawnić w celu optymalizacji systemu kształcenia językowego w odniesieniu do: nauczania komunikacyjnego, wykorzystania nowoczesnych technologii oraz potrzeby aktualizowania terminologii wojskowo-specjalistycznej. Całość publikacji zakończona jest podsumowaniem zawierającym praktyczne wskazówki do nauczania języka angielskiego dla potrzeb wojska na miarę XXI w.
    The current political situation in Poland related to European integration and military cooperation within NATO has made the knowledge of foreign languages in the Polish Armed Forces a genuine need. It is not surprising that English Language Teaching (ELT) in Poland’s Ministry of National Defence has played an important role in the education and training of soldiers. There are, however, areas requiring the implementation of necessary system changes. With this in mind, the overriding goal of the paper is to look at the framework for language teaching within the Polish Armed Forces in relation to the actual needs of its participants, i.e. the soldiers. The first part offers a survey of the definitions and discusses the way of organising language courses in the Polish Armed Forces. The second part is practical and scrutinises the elements which require improvement in order to make the framework for language teaching more effective in relation to the communication approach, the incorporation of new technologies, and the need to update the language corpus of military terminology. The paper concludes with the summary including some practical suggestions on teaching military English in the twenty-first century.

    System szkolenia podoficerów i szeregowych zawodowych w Wojsku Polskim jest nie wydolny i nieskuteczny, uniemożliwia podniesienie kompetencji aż 1/3 osób tego wymagających, a szkolenie pozostałych odbywa się mimo niedoborów kadry, na przestarzałym sprzęcie; brakuje też urządzeń szkolno-treningowych oraz podstawowych środków bojowych. Z ustaleń Najwyższej Izby Kontroli wynika, że nabyte przez żołnierzy umiejętności często nie przystają do wymogów współczesnego pola walki.
    Training of the army is the basic task of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland during peace. It is aimed at individual preparation of specialist soldiers, tailored to the functions they perform. The effectiveness of training depends on both solid analysis of training needs, and on providing appropriate staff in military training units, their appropriate equipment and provision of necessary material and technical supplies. NIK decided to examine the actual practice in the area. The audit was conducted at the Armed Forces General Command (Polish: Dowództwo Generalne Rodzajów Sił Zbrojnych) in Warsaw and at seven military training units, including five training cen tres and two schools for non-commissioned officers. The auditors reviewed: planning of training needs; ensuring trainers and appropriate training infrastructure; implementa tion of planned training activities and methodological training; supervision and control over military training units. The findings of the audit indicate that prompt changes are necessary, while the irregularities detected during the audit should serve as a warning for the whole national defence sector, which is responsible for such an important task.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony badaniu specyfiki działalności placówek oświatowych w obozie internowanych oddziałów Ukraińskiej Republiki Ludowej Kalisz (Polska) w latach 1921-1924. Dzięki pomocy dowództwa grupy internowanych w oboze powstały szkoły czytania i pisania dla niepiśmiennych Kozaków; rozpoczął swoją pracę obozowe gimnazjum im T. Szewczenko, dzięki czemu dla znacznej liczby obozowiczów stało się możliwe przygotować się lub kontynuować naukę na poziomie średnim. W dużej mierze trzyletnia praca gimnazjum (1921–1923) stała się możliwa dzięki znacznej pomocy humanitarnej, dostarczonej przez Amerykańską Organizację Charytatywną YMCA, Ukraiński Komitet Centralny, organizacje pozarządowe i indywidualnych filantropów. Wiedza zdobyta przez internowanych ułatwiła ich dalsze dostosowanie do nowych warunków egzystencji emigranta już w Polsce na zasadach cywilnych, a także proces ich zatrudnienia w innych krajach europejskich.
    The article considers the peculiarities of the activities of educational institutions in the camp of interned troops of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Kalisz (Poland) in 1921-1924. Thanks to the assistance of the headquarters of the group of internees, literacy schools were established for illiterate Cossacks; the camp Gymnasium named after T. Shevchenko, thanks to which a significant number of campers were able to prepare for or continue secondary education. To a large extent, the three-year work of the Gymnasium (1921-1923) became possible thanks to significant humanitarian aid, provided by the American Charitable Organization YMCA, the Ukrainian Central Committee, Ukrainian Central Committee and individual philanthropists. The knowledge acquired by the internees facilitated their further adaptation to the new conditions of emigrant existence already on a civilian basis in Poland, as well as the process of their employment in other European countries.
