Opis:
This article reviews regional and national initiatives which foster the growth of start-ups in Poland. It begins with an attempt to define a start-up company and outline the rationale for public and private support for innovative entrepreneurship. The second section contains six case studies of organisations based in Warsaw and Kraków which support start-ups at various stages of development. The main goal of this research is to broaden practical knowledge by examining the different tools, approaches, motivations, and roles played by selected stakeholders within the Polish start-up ecosystem. The research shows the changing landscape of the Polish start-up support scene, demonstrated by different approaches and institutional arrangements. It reveals an increase in the number of linkages to other countries, as well as the crucial role of entrepreneurial learning and mentoring. Additionally, the findings highlight challenges associated with the practice of collecting conclusive evidence of the effectiveness of start-up support programmes.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the survey using the Contingent Valuation Method. The aim of the research was to estimate the value of selected lake ecosystems of Central Pomerania by determining the willingness to pay for recreational use of the beach with the swimming area by people aged from 18 to 21 years. The research shows that 90% of the surveyed group declares their willingness to pay. The highest amounts are offered by young inhabitants of Szczecinek City and Szczecinek County. On the other hand, tourists resting in Central Pomerania value lake ecosystems most often on the basis of aesthetic values, without knowing the ecological condition of the lake. The average ticket price which the respondents are willing to pay is PLN 20.40 per day. The lower the ecological condition of the lake, the lower the willingness to pay, especially among the inhabitants of the region under study. The amounts declared constitute important information for lake managers who are able to compare the costs incurred so far with the potential profits from ticket sales. Moreover, thanks to the use of the Contingent Valuation Method, it is possible to determine which lakes have the highest value for recreationists and to manage them in such a way as to prevent their degradation in the future and, consequently, to prevent the deterioration of the value of ecosystem services.

Opis:
Site and situation specific assessments of ecosystem services are crucial to sustainably conserve and manage the Chilmo forest. In this specific study, an attempt has been made to identify how local communities depend on Ecosystem services and on other stakeholders involved in sustainable forest management. The study triangulated primary data collection methods such as field observations, household surveys and key informant interviews. Secondary data was also used to support and verify the primary data. SPSS version 20 software and Microsoft excel were then applied to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the study population’s households. Data collected through discussions and observations was analyzed qualitatively. Four forest ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, habitat and cultural services) were identified in the study area. Even though agriculture is the main economic activities, sample respondents earn money from diverse sources such as from homestead, wood lots, honey production, petty trade and from the selling of timber and non -timber forest products, from forest dividends and other forest related employment. Chilmo forest, on average, contributes more than a third of total annual income of the sample households. Surprisingly, almost all sample respondents participate in fuel wood collection, both for household consumption and market. Similarly, fuel wood collection generates the highest income, compared to other activities, because fuel wood is the sole source of energy in the study area. Therefore, provisioning services are the main source of livelihood and subsistence incomes for local communities. The findings greatly contribute towards the management of the Chilmo forest and will be used as input for further valuation work.

Integrating the ecosystem services (ES) concept into land-use planning has been the focus of researchers in recent years. Forwarding this objective in order to foster human well-being, urban and regional planning became the focus of research efforts. Furthermore, governance research has been beneficial in studying the coupling of ecosystem services and planning processes. Thus, in this explorative case study we have analysed the governance of urban and regional planning in two case studies – Rostock and Munich – in order to gain insights about the role and value of ecosystem services among planning actors. We conducted semi-structured interviews to identify relevant parameters to facilitate integrational approaches of ecosystem services into decision-making in the context of cross-sectoral urban and regional planning. Based on our results, we argue for a change of the perspective of ES within planning practice. Instead of ecological or economic endeavours, the contribution of ES to human well-being should be in the centre of attention. Human well-being as an overarching aspiration may have the potential to shift ecosystem services from sectoral to cross-sectoral planning.

Mountain forests are facing substantial changes. The need to adapt forest management to climate change is overlaid by the consequences of demographic changes that alter the form of land use profoundly. The European policy is aware of the challenges and supports mountain regions by the Regulation for Rural Developments and other strategies. Regional efforts of the Forest Authorities account for the changing ownership structure in order to ensure sustainable forest management and the provision of the dependent ecosystem services.

Opis:
Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and their symbiotic associations with forest trees are among major drivers of key ecosystem functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant nutrient and water uptake from soil, plant-plant facilitation/competition and diversity regulation via common mycorrhizal networks. Through their functional traits and interactions with both abiotic and biotic environment, they also significantly affect the process of open land colonization by trees as well as vegetation succession coupled with soil and ecosystem development. Here we review the role of ECM fungi in the early primary and secondary succession following major anthropogenic disturbances. Based on the examples of mine spoils and post-agricultural lands, we demonstrate key ecosystem services provided by ECM fungi in the processes of forest restoration. We point out ecological mechanisms and adaptations which underpin ECM fungal community successional interactions, particularly life histories, dispersal, spatial structure, host preferences, and sensitivity to environmental filters. We emphasize the need of better understanding the role of ECM fungi in the forest restoration practice as it seems crucial for afforestation success and biodiversity rehabilitation. Thus, ectomycorrhizal traits should be a prime consideration in afforestation and carbon sequestration polices, sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation practices.

Opis:
In a global sales market with networked production steps and increasing complex machine tools, scaling service ecosystems for production provide an adequate solution for handling the generated data. The existing sensor equipment at current and the extension possibility by the System-of-Systems approach for existing machine tools can offer value-added services by the smart handling of production-related data. It is important to make these data validatable and exchangeable, taking into account to different protection goals. The trust of the individual actors in such a volatile value chain and the different (partly cross-border) value creation partners play an important role. The participation of a large number of these actors creates an attractive overall system (ecosystem) with lots of services and network effects. Concerning data security there are numerous aspects, which have not been adequately answered or taken into account in the use of a service ecosystem in the production environment. The paper discusses a distributed ecosystem for production on a distributed ledger-based service ecosystem, in which services can be mapped in the machine tool environment (e.g. calibration). This technology can be used for secure data exchange in order to discuss traceability and unchangeability of data while maintaining data sovereignty.

Opis:
Under the new normal of China’s economy, the competition among the port enterprises is not only the competition of the core competence of the port, the port industry chain or the port supply chain, but also the competition of the port service ecosystem. In this paper, the concept and characteristics of the port service ecosystem is discussed, a hierarchical model of the port service ecosystem is constructed. As an extended logistic model, Lotka-Volterra model is applied to study the competitive co-evolution and mutually beneficial co-evolution of enterprises in the port service ecosystem. This paper simulates the co-evolution of enterprises in the port service ecosystem by using MATLAB programming. The simulation results show that the breadth of the niche of the enterprises is changing with the change of the competition coefficient and the coefficient of mutual benefit in the port service ecosystem. Based on that, some proposals are put forward to ensure the healthy and orderly development of the port service ecosystem.

Ecosystem services (ES) concept has been popular among researchers in the last several years. In this paper, we assessed the development and trends in Polish ES research in the period 2010-2016 using the content analysis of 84 scientific papers – the outcome of ECOSERV Symposia. We analysed such attributes as the type, dimension and scale of the study, ecosystems and ES investigated, the system used to name or classify ES, data used, as well as the considered policy and business questions. In addition, we compared the Polish studies with the European research in the database developed in the ESMERALDA project. The conducted study provides insight into the major achievements as well as challenges that the Polish ES research community will have to face. The findings may serve a discussion on how future directions of the research can be shaped in order to mainstream ES into environmental management.

Opis:
The objective of this study is to present the issues associated with insect pollination as an environmental service. Moreover, it presents the methods of estimating the value of pollination and the results of the research into that value. Research indicates a significant value of pollination – between 153 and 167 billion dollars in the world. Depending on the estimation method, the value of plant pollination by insects may vary. The differences reach as much as several dozen percent. The discrepancies result from different understanding of the term “value”, and in the case of cultivated plants – from significant diversification of the data on the impact of pollination on the crops (available in the subject literature). The literature is dominated by research in determining the value of pollination for cultivated plants. The research into the economic value of pollination for maintaining biodiversity is conducted at a very small scale.

Big Data and Internet of Things will increase the amount of data on asset management exceedingly. Data sharing with an increased number of partners in the area of asset management is important when developing business opportunities and new ecosystems. An asset management ecosystem is a complex set of relationships between parties taking part in asset management actions. In this paper, the current barriers and benefits of data sharing are identified based on the results of an interview study. The main benefits are transparency, access to data and reuse of data. New services can be created by taking advantage of data sharing. The main barriers to sharing data are an unclear view of the data sharing process and difficulties to recognize the benefits of data sharing. For overcoming the barriers in data sharing, this paper applies the ecosystem perspective on asset management information. The approach is explained by using the Swedish railway industry as an example.
Big data i Internet rzeczy znacznie zwiększą ilość danych dotyczących zarządzania aktywami. W niniejszym artykule zidentyfikowano obecne bariery i zalety udostępniania danych w oparciu o wyniki wywiadów. Główne zalety to przejrzystość, dostęp do danych i ich ponowne wykorzystanie. Nowe usługi mogą być tworzone poprzez wykorzystanie udostępniania danych. Głównymi barierami w udostępnianiu danych są niejednoznaczne podejście do procesu udostępniania danych i trudności z rozpoznaniem korzyści płynących z udostępniania danych. Aby przezwyciężyć bariery w udostępnianiu danych, niniejszy artykuł wprowadza ekosystemowe podejście do informacji dotyczących zarządzania aktywami. Podejście to jest wyjaśnione na przykładzie szwedzkiego przemysłu kolejowego.

This study identifies and analyses ecosystem services (ES) in the context of their applicability for drought and flood prevention measures planning undertaken within the framework of small water retention. The results illustrate that ES classified as regulation and maintenance are the most significant because they, one the one hand, contribute the most to improving the flood retention capacity of river catchment areas, whilst on the other hand they provide desirable values that people derive from nature. Furthermore, we also find that the small water retention reservoir is a solution which assures both the best weather hazard prevention as well as the greatest number of benefits.
