The content of Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, Cd and S in the upper soil layer of meadow ecosystems surrounding the steelworks "Huta Katowice" was investigated. Sampling plots were located at a different distance and direction from the plant, but in a similar type of meadow community and soil. Spatial and seasonal variability of the investigated elements content was found. Such results indicate that the investigated area was polluted both by that steelworks and by the industrial plants situated in the Industrial Region of Upper Silesia.

Opis:
Mitigation and adaptation are the main strategies to address climate change. Both of them are interrelated instruments and key elements of an integral approach to tackle the phenomenon. This interrelation is particularly strong in the land use sector, an area in which practically any policy has a significant effect on the goals of both strategies. Yet, in practice, mitigation and adaptation are treated as two different instruments. A poor understanding about the interactions between the mentioned strategies remains as a barrier to implement the integrated approach. To contribute to fill-in this knowledge gap, a hypothetical ecologic-economic system simulated under deep uncertainty was used to test environmental and welfare implications of different policy configurations. Taking the unregulated economy as a benchmark, the outcomes of the mentioned interventions were classified as synergies or different forms of trade-offs. Results indicate that measures based on internalization of externalities overcame monetary compensation schemes. Moreover, when externalities were corrected, synergies were more frequent and associated to higher environmental and welfare gains. Furthermore, the policy configuration that exhibited best synergic properties was an intervention integrating mitigation and adaptation measures. This indicates that synergies may be more accessible than previously considered, however, current policy approach and incentives may not be the best tools to trigger them.

In the study, the content of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn in the soils collected from various regions of the Lublin Voivodeship was examined. The examined soils were light medium soils. Content of individual elements was determined by the AAS method in the extracts of 1 M HCl. The analysed soils were poor in copper and manganese. Their concentration and the concentration of lead, cadmium and nickel was in the lower realms of the range natural for light soils formed from sands. Only the content of zinc was fairly high in the above soils, frequently as high as the first degree of contamination.

On the basis of the obtained expeditionary data, the authors performed a comprehensive analysis of the ecosystems’ modern transformation in the studied area. In the course of the analysis, the authors found that at the present stage there have been quantitative changes (depletion of natural resources) in used landscapes, along with them, there are changes in qualitative characteristics (accumulation of resources). Now, against the background of vegetation and soil degradation, ways of their restoration are observed. New combinations of degraded and self-recovering ecosystems have emerged. Based on the analysis of the current state of different ecological systems and their relationships, the authors determined the possibilities of the dynamics of their combinations functioning by stages. This will make it possible to give a more reliable forecast of the ongoing processes in the ecosystems of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Opis:
In the result of geomechanical transformations associated with the activity of open cast brown coal mining, some changes in air-water relations may occur on arable land adjacent to these regions usually referred to as hvdrological alterations. However, they do not always need to result in soil degradation, i.e. in the deterioration of their production potentials. This will often depend on the distance of fields from the workings, value of the arable land (soil quality class), type of water management, etc. On the basis of long-term studies carried out in the area of operation of two brown coal mines - KWB "Konin" and "Adamów" - on arable land and grasslands of over 60 villages on the total area of 30 thousand hectares it was possible to develop evaluation criteria for the extent of soil degradation and work out principles for compensation payments for farmers. Three zones and appropriate sub-zones of soil susceptibility to drainage were determined and clear and simple criteria for the estimation of the extent of arable land and grassland degradation were worked out. Furthermore, the authors proposed simple and readable systems to calculate compensatory payments to be paid to farmers taking into account the state of soil degradation, value of agricultural land (price of 1 ha of land of appropriate class) and the area of damaged land. The degree of soil degradation, both of arable land and grasslands, ranged from 10 to 30%. In the case of grasslands, additionally, an appropriate sum of money was allocated to compensate for sward recultivation.

Opis:
Solidago species are one of the most widespread invasive species in Europe. In Central Europe, vegetation dominated by alien goldenrods can occupy vast areas. Their presence causes a decrease in the biodiversity level of numerous groups of organisms (plants, birds and insects). Alien Solidago also disturb biogeochemical cycles, as well as the primary productivity in infested ecosystems. In Central Europe, four alien Solidago species are considered as naturalized plants: late goldenrod (Solidago altissima L.), Canadian goldenrod (S. canadensis L.), tall goldenrod (S. gigantea Aiton), and grass-leaved goldenrod (S. graminifolia (L.) Elliot. = Euthamia graminifolia (L.) Nutt.). To analyse the dynamics of the growth and flowering of Solidago species, an experiment was conducted in which the goldenrods were planted in pots. We examined the life history traits, which are treated as being strongly connected with the invasive abilities of these species. The height, number of ramets and percentage of flowered plants were noted at ten-day intervals from May to November over a period of four years. Two native species, often co-occurring with alien goldenrods, were analysed for comparison: European goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea L.) and common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.). The analysed species reached their maximal height during the second and third years of the experiment. The highest ramets were noted in the case of Solidago altissima, S. canadensis and S. gigantea. A group of lower plants consisted of Solidago graminifolia, together with the native species S. virgaurea and T. vulgare. The number of ramets formed by S. graminifolia was more than two times larger than in the case of other species. All of the analysed species flowered during the time of observation but, grass-leaved goldenrod, was the only one among the alien species which flowered in all pots and 100% of individuals produced mature seeds. Its phenology (early flowering and seed ripening) was more similar to native species’ than to other alien Solidago. Our results suggest Solidago graminifolia has strong competitive abilities; however, its range is very limited. The reasons for the slow spread of this species in Europe – other than competitive limitations – should be considered.

The investigations concerned sites of Acer platanoides L. infected or not by Rhytisma aceriniu (Pers.) Fr. The aim of the study was to check the occurrence of R. acerinium, and whether it reflects the environmental status. Furthermore, an analysis was carried out to find out whether the applied SOFM offers additional advantages to solve problems in relation to conventional methods. Concentrations of selected elements in soils and leaves, and leaf and "tar-spot" morphometric traits were also measured. A significant differentiation was found between sites in relation to the analyzed traits. It appeared, that sites showing lower concentrations of chemical elements and proper developmental habitat conditions massive infections take place. The study showed that R. acerinium is a good biological indicator for assessment of environmental status. The applied, conventional statistical methods, SOFM and image techniques showed similar, but not identical results for assessment of environmental quality using R. acerinium. SOFM appeared to be more useful for ordination of results and ought to be taken into account as a proper tool of estimation of various plants and their biotopes.

Opis:
Szczególną rolę w krajobrazie Pojezierza Mazurskiego odgrywają źródła i obszary źródliskowe usytuowane zwykle w dolinach rzek i strumieni wciętych głęboko w teren. Różnorodne formy samowypływów wód napiętych hydrostatycznie spełniają wiele cennych i niezwykle złożonych funkcji przyrodniczo-gospodarczych. Wyniki prac badawczych, odnoszone do 34 źródeł i mokradeł dolinowych zajmujących łączną powierzchnię 902 ha, wskazują na daleko zaawansowany proces degradacji ekosystemów wodnych. Wskaźniki nierównomierności wydatku źródeł (Q maks./Q min.), dochodzące do 28,6, są dowodem braku stabilizacji i równowagi hydrodynamicznej zbiorników wód podziemnych. Wahania ekstremalne stanów wód w mokradłach sięgają wielkości 100-200 cm, co wynika z zaburzenia cykliczności występowania zjawisk naturalnych zachodzących w środowisku siedlisk hydrogenicznych. Dla powstrzymania procesu dalszej degradacji ekosystemów wodnych niezbędne jest podjęcie odpowiednich działań o charakterze organizacyjno-gospodarczym, jak: wyrównanie zbiornikowe odpływu na sieci rzecznej, hydroenergetyczna zabudowa zlewni, stopniowe wprowadzanie form rolnictwa ekologicznego, powiększenie retencji użytecznej gleb, wzbogacanie waloryzacji przestrzennej krajobrazu drogą odpowiednich zabiegów melioracyjnych (biologiczna regulacja rzek, regeneracja oczek wodnych i mokradeł śródpolnych, odbudowa zadrzewień o charakterze brzegowym i wodochronnym).
The results of survey covering 34 springs and marshy river valleys of the total area 902 ha in the Mazury Lake District (NE Poland) were presented in the paper. Advanced degradation process of water ecosystems was pointed out with respect to their valuable and complex functions of environmental and economic character. An evidence for hydrodynamic imbalance in underground water resources may be a high level of spring discharge irregularity coefficient (Q max./Q min.), achieving nearly 28.6. The extreme fluctuations of bog water table range from 100 to 200 cm what results from disturbances of natural circulation phenomena in hydrogenic environments. Some activities are proposed towards limiting the further degradation of water ecosystems e.g. flood wave attenuation in water reservoirs, hydro-power plant building on the river’s network, increasing useful retention of soils, enrichment of landscape valorization by means of using reclamation methods such as biological rivers’ regulation, renovation of small mid-field ponds, restoration of the forests along river banks.

Opis:
The study was carried out on a small (7.8 ha) and shallow (9.0 m) lake Mały Kopik, situated 9 km on south western from Olsztyn, drainage basin of Giłwa and Pasłęka rivers. The catchment area of the lake is 194.7 ha. Forests cover the most of the drainage basin area (64.2%), agriculture land comprises 28.7% (21% grass land and 7.7% arable land) and urban land - 7.1%. Lake Mały Kopik is not susceptible to degradation (III category), and drainage basin having a great potential for supplying matter to the reservoir, was included in basin category 4. The lake with its drainage basin belong to the 4th type of lake-drainage basin ecosystems. In such a system the natural eutrophication of the lake is expected to proceed at a fast rate. As evidenced in the study, lake Mały Kopik is highly eutrophic reservoir. The lake waters were characterized by a high content of nutrients, up to 0.673 mg P·dm-3 and 10.61 mg N·dm-3. The high fertility of the lake was exhibited also by the values of BOD5 reaching 7.5 mg O2·dm-3, chlorophyll a content - 50 µg·m-3, and low water transparency - 2 m.
Badaniami objęto małe (7,8 ha) i niezbyt głębokie (9 m) jezioro Mały Kopik, położone ok. 9 km na południowy zachód od Olsztyna, w dorzeczu Giłwy-Pasłęki. Zlewnia jeziora to obszar o powierzchni 194,7 ha.
