Opis:
The traditional linear economic growth model pursues solely the GDP growth, and economic development is achieved at the expense of the environment and the resources. This model has obvious ethical flaws and has been viewed as a “from cradle to grave” approach. Differently, the circular economy development model establishes the principles of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” as its core contents in order to achieve sustainable development, which has been viewed as a "from cradle to cradle" approach. Circular economy engenders new ethical relationships, and proposes new ethics of production and consumption. Circular economy implies the holistic value principle and sustainable value principle, which can remedy the ethical flaws of the traditional linear model. As an ethical and sustainable development approach, circular economy contributes to the Copernican change in the field of economic ethics.

Opis:
The paper concerns the idea of entrepreneurial ethics in scholastic texts. The sources, methods of research, and general historical preliminaries are discussed. In the methodology of the research Max Weber’s categories of economic exchange, entrepreneurship and entrepreneur are invoked. Medieval notions and concepts, such as iustus mercator, industria, and bonum commune are analyzed in the context of these socio-economic categories. Texts from the middle of the XIIIth century to the middle of XVth century are taken into consideration, in particular such canonists and theologians as Chiaro of Florence (Casus fratris Claris), Thomas Aquinas, Giles of Lesines, Henry of Ghent, Peter Olivi, Matthew of Cracow, Bernardine of Siena, and Antonine of Florence. The merchant’s guide by Benko Kutruljević(Benedetto Cotrugli) is considered too, as an example of reception of scholastic thought at a more practical level. In the topic discussed the particularity of Latin Christianity in the late medieval period, in comparison to other epochs and civilizations, is linked to the new idea of work and to certain cultural phenomena, including: the ethical focus of scholastic doctors, the idea of volunteer poverty, and Christian concept of the gift (referred to particularly in the Sermon on the Mount: Luke 6, 20–45). The system of terms and notions – by which entrepreneurship and economic activity were defi ned – influenced in some way the mentality and social practice. In practice, the evaluation of entrepreneurial activity was related to different systems of norms, which was expressed by the notion of forum. This could be: Roman law (forum civilis), canons, and practical theology (forum Dei). In the final case of forum Dei, the individual confession, introduced by the Church in the XIIIth century, was of crucial significance.

Opis:
This paper presents some views of Adam Smith based on some selected problems of business ethics. These can be found in his famous works-The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations-and in his lectures at the Glasgow University, where he was a professor of moral philosophy in 1752–1764. The main argument of the paper is that ethical problems (presented mainly in The Theory of Moral Sentiments) are also present in his political economy, which contradicts some neoliberal interpretations of his works as ones of the “intellectual father of capitalism”. In The Wealth of Nations, Smith criticizes each social class because of the fact that its interests are incompatible with the good of the whole society. He condemned the monopolist efforts of the traders and entrepreneurs, described some property owners as “vain egoists” and advanced the interests of the poor. He maintained that the interests of the traders should be supported when these were compatible with the interest of the consumers. The desire for possession and wealth should be analyzed from the social point of view: It is good when it contributes to the common good and the reproduction of humankind.

The main purpose of the article is the presentation and interpretation of some ethical, economic and social aspects in the works of Plato. The division of labour, wealth, the meaning of money, use of interest and paying taxes are the most interesting problems in Plato’s vision of The Republic. There one can also find some current problems such as the attitude of citizens towards their states, the ethical standards required of the authorities or the role of women. This article was written in the form of a dialogue; the same as the works of Plato.

Facing the economic crisis (began in 2007) managers and political leaders pay more attention to the postulate of socially responsible business. The axiological turn gives new possibilities to implement ethical standards in the sphere of economy. Alas, at the same time, this task evokes the following problems. Firstly, as social researchers, we need to know how to compose heterogeneous axiological systems (to join rules of ethics with the imperative of economic efficiency). Secondly, as market participants, we have to find the formula of mutual understanding (being seen as precondition of our ethical claims).

However, priority was given to market reforms and very fast economic growth while the ethical aspects of the PRC’s development were neglected. That is why the PRC must face important development challenges.

Opis:
In this essay I would like to outline the Christian perspective on solving economic issues based on documents of the Catholic Church. The term ‘economic personalism’ appeared in literature several years ago and has been used as a proposal of a new economic model which is supposed to be a synthesis of achievements of economic sciences and Christian moral theology. Pope John Paul II is believed to be one of its precursors or even founding-fathers. We shall sum up these significant elements of papal personalism under the following heads: (1) A man is a person, namely an independent existence in material and personal, spiritual and material sense, rational and free. All these characteristics of a human being constitute a basis for his dignity and greatness; (2) A man is a free being. This means that he has to make choices between various values. Human freedom is closely related to the truth. The final objective of human freedom is love; (3) We can protect ourselves against alienation by acting and being together with others. We will avoid the danger of alienation when we make ourselves a gift for the other person and especially for God. Economic personalism develops John Paul II’s personalistic view in a creative way. Its program can be summarized by the following theses: (1) a man is the centre of economy; (2) a human being is the most important economic good; (3) work is part of the man’s calling; (4) reproducibility of goods is subordinated to the man’s integral development; (5) the right to participate constitutes inalienable human right; (6) the principle of subsidiary is an „intellectual” frame for social and economic order; (7) the market should not be absolutized; (8) solidarity with the poor and social justice constitute a basis of each economy.

Opis:
Global capitalism is both an outcome and a stimulant of spreading not only the same market economy standards and lifestyles but moral relativism as well. Its origin goes back to Anglo-Saxon liberalism that limits the individuals to maximize their personal benefits that are measured according to the market values. The perception of human nature adopted in this ideology determines solutions as for how to achieve individual and communitarian goals and meet criteria of their validation. As a result, the development of human capital understood as the knowledge necessary to act, is focused on its subjective functions. Thus, human capital plays a more important role in the multiplication of individual benefit than in the improvement of the value of human life. Such developed human capital results in growing disparities in the knowledge assets enabling the harmonization of personal benefit with the responsibility for the valuable life of present and future generations. These disparities lead to an increase in risk of global threats to humanity. The reaction to these threats cannot be based on the development of globalization. The concept that respects the multi-faceted nature of a human being seems to be an appropriate alternative. Due to these efforts, new economics might be developed that may provide applicable educational and institutional tools for long-term sustained economic development and improve the quality of life of an individual.

The aim of the article is to analyze how the processes, described by Ronald Inglehart as postmodernisation, affect the shape of ethics and, more broadly, the economic culture of Western civilization. This problem will be addressed with the emphasis on changes taking place in the family, which have their significant effects on the process of socialization and moral education. One of the assumptions accepted here is the relationship between the functioning of mediating structures and the transmission of culture, understood as a set of values, norms and beliefs. This offers grounds to reasonably claim that the ethical face of the economic system is embedded in the area of socialization – especially the primary one – of which moral education is an important aspect.

Opis:
The article argues that the goal of business is to increase profit, but it also recognizes that proper relationships must exist between the entrepreneur and employees, customers, the state, and society at large. These relationships are deemed necessary for business to occur, and additional relationships, such as those with contractors, the media, and the natural environment, may also be relevant. The ethical aspects of business are inseparable from the ethical problems present in society. Undesirable behaviors within business activities are discussed as morally reprehensible, affecting both business conduct and generating moral dilemmas within society. Economic issues are noted as playing a significant role in contemporary society, often becoming modern idols. Consequently, there is a growing call for proper ethical conduct in the business world to address these concerns and ensure the common good. The article highlights that answers within the realm of business ethics are influenced by researchers' ethical and economic perspectives. The distinction between entrepreneurs and managers is emphasized, with the latter often assuming entrepreneurial roles. This separation raises concerns regarding the alignment of owners' moral obligations with the goals and commitments of managerial staff. Shareholder interests, primarily focused on profit maximization, sometimes overshadow ethical considerations.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the economic thought of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi with respect to ethical aspects. There are lots of statements and remarks about the relations of ethics and economics in Gandhi’s writings. In his opinion, both areas should be treated as integrated. That is why it is worth analysing Gandhi’s views on various economic matters. Only a selected presentation was possible because it was difficult to find cohesion in his socio-economic system. One of the hypothesis underlined is that it is even risky to write about Gandhi’s united system. Generally his economic thought was not a part of economics as a discipline. Nevertheless it is not a reason to relinquish studies of it. Because of the fact that many remarks linked with microand macroeconomics are of considerable value, they can be used to research economic changes in India in 20th century or to study the attitude of Indian society towards those changes. The main source of the paper was the autobiography ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’ published in 1925. More of Gandhi’s economic thought can also be found in the work ‘Hind Swaraj’ from 1909 and in the lecture ‘Does Economic Progress Clash with Real Progress?’ from 1916.

The technological, economic and political advances of the 20th and 21st centuries have established new conditions for the development of civilization. The world economy has simultaneously expanded (the number of states/organization participating in world trade or the volume of heterogeneous transactions) and shrunk (close interrelations between transactions, no matter their geographic origins). Economic policy has gained an indispensable role in the creation of order in international relations and foreign policy. The tendency to prioritize foreign policy aims towards economic policy aims has resulted in ‘reverse flow’, i.e. foreign policy has become a central part of national economic policy. The engagement of external action services and public budget in economic promotion and investments triggers (inter alia) the ethics dilemma. The mentioned ethical aspect is often omitted when discussing ‘the economic foreign policy’. For instance, the ethics dilemma can appear when development and humanitarian aid are taken into account or when it comes to assessing the results (and membership) of economic missions. In this context, the author analyses the Polish foreign policy example and attempts to answer two questions. First, are the economic activities performed by external action services effective? Second, are the mentioned activities in accordance with the social ethical code of conduct? The author focuses on three elements – development and humanitarian aid, the participation of Polish diplomats in economic promotion, and economic missions.

Objectives This paper aims to present the relations between legal, economic, technological instruments and the factors affecting the dominating standard of social awareness which affects ethical choices in the scope of environmental protection. Material and methods The article uses the method of analysis and criticism of the literature as well as dogmatic and legal. Results Effective environmental protection demands an interdisciplinary approach. It should rest on the foundation of legal regulations setting out rules for the use and protection of natural resources with the principle of sustainable development. People need these resources for survival but they contribute to their degradation. To secure the basic rights of people, the environment and economic growth, effective environmental protection is a must. Conclusions This analysis served to develop a model that integrates these elements for the purpose of effective environmental protection. In a nutshell, effective environmental protection cannot be attained through legal instruments alone; they must be coordinated – the use of the best available techniques – with adequate economic tools and ethical standing of the society.

Th is study examines the questions of ethics and transparency in Russian journalism. Th e paper explains instances of non-transparent behavior among Russian journalists in light of economic hardship that Russian journalists in the province face in their everyday life. Specifi cally, this study attempts to explicate the connection between transparency, journalism ethics, and economic and social conditions in which regional journalists function in Russia. Th is paper argues that morality may depend on economic conditions of an individual and poor economic conditions tend to diminish human dignity. In turn, diminished human dignity more readily puts in jeopardy professional ethical principles and contributes to non-transparent media practices. Poor economic conditions have implications for regional journalism practice in Russia, where they create a vicious circle which Russian journalists fail to break.
