Opis:
Several studies on the assessment of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks have been carried out at the global level. However, reliable information on SOC stocks is not readily available at the regional level. In addition, very few studies have assessed the factors responsible for the variation of SOC stocks, in particular the effect of plant communities. For this purpose, the main objective was to analyze the effects of three plant communities and ecological parameters on the SOC stock in the Mamora forest. Specifically, the authors looked to examine the relationships between SOC stock and plant communities and to define the main parameters that directly influence SOC stock. Ten soil profiles with three replications were sampled at each plant community, from which SOC stock was determined. To assess the effect of plant communities on SOC stocks, phytosociological surveys were carried out according to the phytosociological stigma method developed by Braun-Blanquet. The results show that the SOC stocks in cork oak soils are characterized by high variability, with values ranging from 55 t•ha-1 to 95 t•ha-1. Indeed, the findings of this study showed that the SOC stocks fluctuated significantly with plant communities. In addition, SOC stocks were also affected by the interactions between plant communities, the amount of litter and the density of the cork oak stand. These outcomes of this study highlight the critical need to incorporate community-specific carbon values into future carbon sequestration modeling.

Opis:
The study objects were Aldrovanda vesiculosa L., an endangered species and fifty five water sites in Poland. The aim of the present work was to test the Self-Organizing Feature Map in order to examine and predict water properties and type of trophicity for restoration of the rare plant. Descriptive statistical parameters have been calculated, analysis of variance and cluster analysis were carried out and SOFM model has been constructed for analysed sites. The results of SOFM model and cluster analysis were compared. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological map of sites are similar in relation to dendrogram of cluster analysis, but not identical. The constructed SOFM model is related with significantly different contents of chemical water properties and type of trophicity. It appeared that sites with A. vesiculosa are predominantly distrophic and eutrophic waters shifted to distrophicity. The elevated model showed the sites with chemical properties favourable for restoration the species. Determined was the range of ecological tolerance of the species in relation to habitat conditions as stenotopic or relatively stenotopic in respect of the earlier accepted eutrophic status. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties constituting a validation of the SOFM method in this type of studies.

Opis:
At Królmet Iron Foundry some research and experimental studies have been carried out to develop technical and technological guidelines for the manufacture of pilot castings for machinery applications. The castings should be characterised by good mechanical properties, specially by good hardnesss, high abrasion wear resistance and impact resistance. Pilot castings have been made by lost foam technology on a modern casting installation. The output of the research and experimental work was designing and making of pattern tooling, determination of technical and technological parameters of the process, and making a batch of pilot castings. The produced castings had the required utilisation parameters.
W odlewni żeliwa KRÓLMET w Zawierciu przeprowadzono prace badawczo doświadczalne związane z opracowaniem założeń techniczno technologicznych do produkcji odlewów części maszyn przy zastosowaniu metody zgazowanych modeli. Odlewy te charakteryzują się dobrymi właściwościami mechanicznymi, zwłaszcza twardością, odpornością na ścieranie i udarnością. Badania przeprowadzono w Instytucie Odlewnictwa a próby techniczne przeprowadzono w zmodernizowanym gnieździe odlewni KRÓLMET. W wyniku przeprowadzonych prac badawczych zoptymalizowano właściwości materiałów stosowanych w tej technologii oraz wykonano serię doświadczalnych odlewów. Otrzymano odlewy o założonych parametrach użytkowych.

Opis:
Modelling, solution, control and even design of many ecological and engineering systems involve dealing with nonlinear partial differential equations of which analytic solutions are rarely available and numerical approach with or without linearization, or approximation is inevitable most of the time. In this paper the possibility of analysing such systems by using a fairly new method known as Differential Taylor (DT) Transform and its advantages are proved. The results obtained by this method are compared with the experimental results and shown to be within good agreement with them. It is emphasised that DT Transform is not effective for only filtration systems, but can also be used equally well for absorption, heat and mass transfer, convective diffusion and similar systems.

Opis:
An integrated ecological system model was used to determine the influence on Baltic phytoplankton of the long-term variability in the sea’s main physical parameters. A three-dimensional coupled sea-ice model was developed. A simple ecosystem was added to the sea-ice model and used to estimate phytoplankton variability during long-term changes in the main atmospheric forces. Scenarios similar to those of climate were performed by altering the main physical parameters such as temperature, wind speed, solar and thermal radiation (in different configurations). The influence of the variability in these parameters on phytoplankton is discussed.
