    The study objects were Aldrovanda vesiculosa L., an endangered species and fifty five water sites in Poland. The aim of the present work was to test the Self-Organizing Feature Map in order to examine and predict water properties and type of trophicity for restoration of the rare plant. Descriptive statistical parameters have been calculated, analysis of variance and cluster analysis were carried out and SOFM model has been constructed for analysed sites. The results of SOFM model and cluster analysis were compared. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological map of sites are similar in relation to dendrogram of cluster analysis, but not identical. The constructed SOFM model is related with significantly different contents of chemical water properties and type of trophicity. It appeared that sites with A. vesiculosa are predominantly distrophic and eutrophic waters shifted to distrophicity. The elevated model showed the sites with chemical properties favourable for restoration the species. Determined was the range of ecological tolerance of the species in relation to habitat conditions as stenotopic or relatively stenotopic in respect of the earlier accepted eutrophic status. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties constituting a validation of the SOFM method in this type of studies.

    The paper shows the use of Kohonen's network for classification of basaltoides on the base of chemical properties of soils and Polypodium vulgare L. The study area was Lower Silesia (Poland). The archival data were: chemical composition of types of basaltoides from 89 sites (Al2O3, CaO, FeO, Fe2O3, K2O, MgO, MnO, Na2O, P2O5, SiO2 and TiO2), elements contents in soils (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Ti and Zn) and leaves of P. vulgare (Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, N, Ni, P, Pb, S, Ti and Zn) from 20 sites. Descriptive statistical parameters of soils and leaves chemical properties have been shown, statistical analyses using ANOVA and relationships between chemical elements were carried out, and SOFM models have been constructed. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological maps of plant and soil chemical properties are similar. The constructed models are related with significantly different contents of elements in plants and soils. These models represent different chemical types of soils and are connected with ordination of types of basaltoides worked out by SOFM model of TAS division. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties.

    The paper provides the use of self-organizing feature maps for determination of soil properties in its initial stage of development formed of massive rocks and how SOFM can be used for the study of environmental objects. The study area was Lower Silesia (Poland) overgrown with common, unique and protected vegetation of lichens, bryophytes and vascular plants. The parent rock of the studied soils consists of Miocene volcanites from the middle part of the Sudety Margin Fault. Soil samples were collected from 20 sites. The soil reaction (pH) and concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Ti, Zn in surface soils were analyzed. Statistical analysis was carried out by one-way ANOVA. The SOFM was used to demonstrate the non-linear ordination and visualization of soil properties. The SOFM showed the influence of parent rock on soil chemical properties generated by it. SOFM appeared to be effective and proper/fit for phenomena and processes taking place in natural environment and is useful in ecology and ought to be taken into account as a possible tool of estimation of various plants and their biotopes. The model can be useful as alternative techniques in modelling the ecological complex data, and provide a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem structure and behaviours in response to environmental changes.

    The location and structure of the septal nectaries in the flowers of Allium aflatunense B. Fedtsch. were studied. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used for examination. It has been shown that the septal nectaries are located in the lower part of the ovary and in the gynophore on which the ovary is borne. Nectar is secreted through the single-layered epidermis surrounding three nectary slits and nectar release occurs through three openings located at the base of the gynophore, which are the outlets of the ducts connected to the nectary slits. The expanded and fused bases of the stamen filaments and the tepals participate in secondary nectar presentation. In the flowers of Allium aflatunense, numerous purple elements: tepals, filaments, style and pedicle, perform the role of a colour attractant. On the intensely green ovary, there occur glistening conical outgrowths of epidermal cells, which may also function as signal attractants.
    Badano położenie i budowę nektarników septalnych w kwiatach Allium aflatunense B. Fedtsch. Do badań wykorzystano mikroskop świetlny i skaningowy elektronowy. Wykazano, że nektarniki septalne położone są w dolnej części zalążni oraz w gynoforze, na którym osadzona jest zalążnia. Sekrecja nektaru odbywa się za pośrednictwem jednowarstwowej epidermy otaczającej trzy szczeliny nektarnika, a emisja nektaru następuje za pośrednictwem trzech otworów położonych u nasady gynoforu, które stanowią ujścia kanalików połączonych ze szczelinami nektarnika. We wtórnej prezentacji nektaru uczestniczą rozszerzone i zrośnięte nasady nitek pręcikowych oraz listki okwiatu. W kwiatach Allium aflatunense rolę barwnej powabni pełnią liczne purpurowe elementy: listki okwiatu, nitki pręcików, szyjka słupka i szypułka. Na intensywnie zielonej zalążni występują połyskujące stożkowate wyrostki komórek epidermy, które mogą również funkcjonować jako atraktanty sygnalizacyjne.

    In the study, the biology of fl owering of Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. was investigated and the pattern of the Ambrosia pollen seasons in Lublin in the years 2001-2008 was characterised. The structure of male and female A. artemisiifolia fl owers was observed in cultivated plants under controlled conditions in the 2000 vegetative season. The number of pollen grains produced by the stamen, fl ower, infl orescence and plant was determined. It was shown that in A. artemisiifolia fl owers nonfunctional pistils occurred with a reduced ovary, performing the role of a pollen presenter. The pistils found in female fl owers differed signifi cantly in their morphological features from the pistils in male fl owers. It was calculated that one stamrn produced an average of 3 375 pollen grains, whereas one fl ower 16 875. A plant which produces 20 racemes may release over 420 million pollen grains into the atmosphere. The Ambrosia pollen seasons in particular years had different patterns. In some years, the days of maximum concentration were in the second half of August, in other years in the fi rst half of September. Over the 8-year period, the maximum daily concentration had a mean value of 116 pollen grains in m3 (31-311). Annual total concentrations of Ambrosia pollen grains ranged between 194 and 1200 grains, and it was 523 grains on the average. The pollen seasons were characterised by the occurrence of several-day-long interruptions in the presence of airborne pollen in the atmosphere of Lublin, which may indicate the long-distance transport of Ambrosia pollen.
    W pracy badano biologię kwitnienia Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. oraz scharakteryzowano przebieg sezonów pyłkowych Ambrosia w Lublinie w latach 2001-2008. Budowę kwiatów męskich i żeńskich A. artemisiifolia obserwowano u roślin uprawianych w warunkach kontrolowanych w sezonie wegetacyjnym 2000 roku. Określono liczbę ziaren pyłku wytwarzanych przez pręcik, kwiat kwiatostan i roślinę. Wykazano, że w kwiatach męskich A. artemisiifolia występują niefunkcjonalne słupki ze zredukowaną zalążnią, pełniące rolę prezenterów pyłkowych. Słupki znajdujące się w kwiatach żeńskich różniły się znacznie cechami morfologicznymi od słupków w kwiatach męskich. Obliczono, że jeden pręcik wytwarza średnio 3 375 ziaren pyłku, jeden kwiat 16 875. Roślina, która wytwarza 20 gron może uwolnić do atmosfery ponad 420 mln ziaren pyłku. Sezony pyłkowe Ambrosia miały w poszczególnych latach różny przebieg. Dni maksymalnych koncentracji przypadały w niektórych latach w drugiej połowie sierpnia, w innych w pierwszej połowie września. Maksymalne dobowe stężenie miało w ciągu 8 lat średnią wartość 116 ziaren pyłku w m3 (31-311). Roczne sumy stężeń ziaren pyłku Ambrosia wahały się od 194 do 1200 ziaren, średnio wynosiły 523 ziarna. Sezony pyłkowe charakteryzowały się występowaniem kilkudniowych przerw w obecności pyłku w atmosferze Lublina, co może wskazywać na daleki transport pyłku Ambrosia.
