Opis:
In the global world where competition is increasing constantly, efficient use of resources is becoming more important for the textile industry. In this study, the efficiency scores and inefficiency effects of the textile industry in selected Eastern European countries were investigated using stochastic frontier analysis. The results indicate that age has a negative impact on inefficiency in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The current ratio decreases the inefficiency in Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, while time decreases that in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Roman campaigns

Opis:
This article seeks to support the earlier dating of campaigns on the Roman eastern frontier in the 540s. It addresses points made in a recent contribution by Michael Whitby, who argued that the traditional chronology, which places a Roman invasion of Persarmenia in 543 and a Persian siege of Edessa in 544, should be retained. The article seeks to demonstrate that the grounds he offers are inadequate and concludes therefore that the earlier dating, according to which the Romans invaded Persarmenia in autumn 542 and the Persians besieged Edessa in 543, is to be preferred.

Opis:
Maize production is the most important field crop in South Africa produced from ancient years, Mpumalanga and North West Provinces being principal producers. Maize is extensively produced and ascendancy ground crop because maize is greater resilient, less labor exhaustive, rich in food strength and starches, grows actual fast, and easy to produce as other ground crops. Most of the produced maize in South African is consumed domestically. Despite massive extents of arable land and all-inclusive land reform implemented for 25 years, farmers in the former homeland areas of South Africa cultivate only small food plots where they grow mostly maize and a small variety of vegetables. The aim of this paper was to examine the technical efficiency of maize-based farmers who farm within smallholder irrigation schemes. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 120 maize-based irrigation farmers. Descriptive statistics and stochastic production frontier models were used in the study. Maize production in the study area was dominated by males (78%) with an average age of 60 years and an average family size of 4 people in the household.  Smallholder irrigators have primary education meaning farmers were literate and able to access farming information and interpret it. Farmers have a minimum average of 10 years of farming experience. Smallholder maize-based farmers were efficient in using their resources given their high farm productivity. The level of technical efficiency for maize farming was 84% which indicates that 16% of maize yield was not realized by smallholder maize farmers in the study area. The study recommends that the government and private sector must improve the farm techniques such as manure and enhanced seeds prepared early and accessible at small and affordable expenses to upsurge maize productivity.

Opis:
Taking the International Congress on Agriculture and Forestry in Vienna 1890 as an example, the article examines controversies about the future prospects of timber supplies. Two participants at the congress, Adolf von Guttenberg and Eugen Ostwald, demanded an end to sustainable forest management. In their opinion, the railway, as a new transport technology, would enable a balance between regions of timber shortage and regions of abundance. Guttenberg’s and Ostwald’s presentations provoked heavy criticism and led, in the following years, to a fundamental debate about appropriate concepts of forest management. In the debate, three aspects were controversial: (1) the effects of railway transportation; (2) the consequences of the increasing timber consumption; (3) the effects of the timber frontier that was advancing, in particular, in Northern and Eastern European woodlands. As a result, the debate led to an ongoing process of rescaling sustainability. Since the 18th century, (classical) concepts of sustainability had been based on local schemes of calculation. By contrast, since the mid-19th century, the growing railway network overcame topographical barriers that had been a pre-condition for local-scale sustainable forest management; in addition, the advancing timber frontier continuously opened up newly accessible woodland areas. Experts were forced to continuously gather new data and to steadily rescale their planning. In schemes for future resource management, space was no longer a constant, but a rapidly changing variable.

Opis:
Prezentowana wizytacja kościoła kosowskiego z połowy XIX wieku daje wystarczająco informacji o administracji, posłudze pastoralnej i uposażeniu Kościoła katolickiego na Kresach Wschodnich, okresu staropolskiego Rzeczypospolitej.
The visitation of the parish church in Kosowo which took place in the middle of 19th century provides us with a wealth of information concerning administration, pastoral care and emolument of the Catholic Church in the historical region of Kresy Wschodnie (“Eastern Borderlands”) in the Old-Polish period of the Commonwealth. Moreover, the record of visitation presents high-profile personae of political and social life of the era. However, its richest part is the set of data pertaining to the visit-ed parish. The data encompass very detailed matters such as descriptions of some every-day objects. They also concern sacred buildings (including their equipment and liturgical paraments), as well as dwellings and outbuildings. The visitation in question is also expressive of assiduous attention paid to moral standards as well as the order and arrangement of liturgies celebrated in the parish church of Kosowo.
